Just went on a great trip for mountaingoat in BC
I will try to tell about it mostly in pics.
My guide, Troy Wolfendon of beaverfoot outfitting took most of the pics as I carried my videocam and he carried his stillcam. Weight is essentiel when hiking up mountains several hours every day so I didnt want to carry my own still cam too. I did take a few stillpics with the videocam but they are not nearly as good as pics from a real stillpic-cam.
Day 1 was kind of uneventfull but on day 2 the hardcore hiking begun !!
We hiked up one mountain
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/beaverfoot.dag2.jpg)
-
And then we had to hike over and around 3 mountain tops the get to the campplace
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/beaverfoottgepas.jpg)
We didnt even get to set up the tent as we spotted goats right away. They were in a perfect position for a stalk so we tried to close up on them. Unfortunately we were busted by some goats we saw too late
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/Beaverfootdetofrsteerforlangtude.jpg)
But the scenery was just amazing !
We went back to camp or climbed back I guess is more the right word, there are no easy quick stalks or trips in theese mountains.
We put up the tent, took a bite and a couple practice shoots and then we spotted a lone goat far away. It took us about 1 hour to get to it and I tried a stalk. Managed to close the distance to 35-40 yards but there were to many trees to attemot a shot.
We went back to camp. actually we took a "shortcut" now we didnt have to worry about getting busted. A pretty rocky shortcut !
-
Ooops, heres the shortcut !

Wow great pics!!!! What an awesome place, looking forward to your next installment!!!!
-
Oh boy, this is going to be good.
Any way you can post some of that video? Don't believe these old legs can handle that kind of country anymore and it sure would be nice to experience it through video using your legs. :)
-
When we came back to the tent it was pretty late and we took a little nap 25 yards from the tent just enjoying the last rays from the sun.
Troy didnt bring a rifle and my bow was at the tent, which we couldnt see by the way, as there was a little hump between us and the tent.
Suddenly I heard a rock fallin... then there was a little noise from the tent.. I looked at Troy who didnt seem to understand either.. then there was a bird chatting like they tend to do when predators are near......
-
And Then.........
-
holy moly those are some unbelievable mtns! What is your approx. altitude up there?
thanks for the pics.
-
Oh man, this is great, but the suspense is killing me!!!! :campfire:
-
Outstanding! More please.....
-
If I were on the trip:
Guide: "come here and take a look at this drop- get a bit closer to edge- it looks awesome"
Me: "no doubt- but the view looks just fine from 15 feet to that edge" "I'm sure the outcropping won't give way- but I'll watch from right here thanks"
Truly God's country right there- beautiful pics
-
Now that is cool, we want more!!!
-
Incredible! Goats hold a real facination for me. I doubt I will ever get the opportunity - like Tom I'm just not sure I could handle the physical part of it. But I sure am looking forward to following along on your hunt!
-
Really neat photos Jacob. Now on with the story.
-
great pics
-
I'm getting queasy just looking at those heights... :(
You go for it dude, I'll stay here where it's safe down at sea level!
Awesome.
-
WOW, amazing scenery Jacob, I get altitude sickness just looking at them. Well, patiently waiting for the next post.......
-
Great story so far Jacob!
I have talked with Troy a couple of times and he is on the top of my list if I ever do another BC goat hunt.
-

Jacob, you're a gifted storyteller. I'm also impressed by your grasp of the English language. By the way you left us hanging at a suspense-filled moment, you obviously graduated with honors from Dr. Lamb's College of Delayed Elocution.
-
yep, I'm betting grizzly in the tent.
-
Wow!! This is going to be a good one!
-
Hey J,
I reconize that name, Troy Wolfenden, he was just a boy when his dad guided me to a goat back in 1989.
Have fun and relax, those guys know their goats, I am confident you will be succesfull.
Hunt hard, Bert.
-
Ok, thanks guys and sorry for the delay, didnt mean to "lamb" it this much, there is just so much to do, been away for 2 weeks and all.
Well, I guess I pretty much knew allready what was in store for us, but somebody had to find out what was at the tent...
I went over to chek it out.
At 15 yards the tent came into view and so did the silvertip of a grizz !!!
I snug back to Troy and whispered `Grizz..we better back out of here´ Troy looked at me like he was thinking ´this Danish guy must be loosing it, mountain sickness allready..´
But we backed up 75 yards or so, still not able to see the tent or the bear and Troy tried yelling `Hey Grizz, get the .... out of our tent !´
The huge grizz ( it seemed huge at the time, but was proberly only around 6,5 foot ) came up over the hump in front of the tent, looked us over and slowly went back to the tent to finish our
lunch !!
Well, that was not the way Troy expected the bear to behave so we quickly agreed to move farther away and try to get to a high point, from where we would be able to see the tent and the bear.
Walking away kind of pissed that this guy was eating our food and quietly talking about our next move and the fact that we had NOTHING, no bow, gun or knife... everything was at the tent, even troys hiking shoes !
We were about 130 yards away when suddenly Troy says `Oh ohh, here he comes´ I turn around and see the grizz come running at us in a straight line from a 100 yards away. He was coming for us, no doubt, and he was coming fast...
We picked up some big rocks ! and I convinced Troy to open up our fleece jackets, and stand next to each other to look as big as possible..
It came to a stop at about 10-15 yards and stood there wawing its big head huffing and puffing, pissing and drooling. Seriously, it was drooling all over the place !
Troy said not to look it in the eyes, but I did anyway..trying to convince it that we were the biggest..we didnt shout at it though, as some people say not to do that with grizz.
It went around us in a half circle, trying to get our wind I guess, still huffing and puffing..
Finally it disapeared
We did not know if it went back to the tent though, so it was an erie walk back.
We got to the tent and I stood guard with my bow ( Troy didnt bring a rifle in the first place ) as Troy QUICKLY packed our stuff and we started hiking back over 3 mountains.
We were supposed to stay for 2-3 days but just changed our plans !!
Troy was in front and I was second. Its a strange feeling walking down in the dark looking over your shoulder all the time waiting to see two yellow eyes in the light of your headlamp !!
We were back around midnight. I fell/slided 12 times, going back the slippery slopes in the dark.
-
Day 3 we went to pick up a rifle !
We also did a little blackbear hunting in the valley, no luck though.
I also called my pregnant girlfreind back home...didnt tell her about the grizz..
Day 4
Back in action !
We went on horseback into a GORGEOUS valley
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/Beaverfootstilhest.jpg)
And finally came to the first cabin
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/b15.jpg)
Some of the pics are bad, I know, those are the ones taken either with my videocam or taken out of actual video.
We loaded of our gear and went on, first on the horses and then we hiked for a while.
Troy spotted some goats
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/b16.jpg)
and I tried stalking them.
When seeing the video and pics I am very pleased with the camoeffect of both the asat leafy jacket and the sitka pants.
-
Oh Man Jacob!! It just keeps getting better!
-
WOW! :scared: :scared:
This is great! Keep it coming
-
That valley picture is fantastic. You need to keep that one for your grandchildren. Holy smokes, what a trip!
-
Thanks guys
Yes mr Schulz, I really like that valley pic too !
Tom, I would rather just use the pics, they are actually better the the video, I think.
Brent, the actual hunting was from 6500 to 9000 feet
Jack, Troy was great, you wont be sorry booking a hunt with him !
-
Evidently your bow was ok after the bear incident? That was one hungry bear. Good thinking on looking larger and holding your ground...hard to do in the heat of the moment I bet! Did you hit him with any rocks? That would probably just p!$$ him off. Love the story!
-
Well, I managed to get inside 30 yards of a goat but the situation didnt lend itself to getting of a shot.
Day 5
We went farther into the valley and spotted goats on 3 different mountain sides. So we had to pick between tough, tough and tough.
We picked tough !
First the alders
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/b17.jpg)
Then the most scary cliffhanger action of the whole trip. ( the pics are not even from the bad parts, as you tend not to think about pics when you fear for your life !!!! )
We finaly reached the alpine.
We should be right above the goat but we just couldnt find it. Glassed intensely
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/beaverfootdag5scouting.jpg)
Troy always a little closer to pure AIR then me !
We didnt find the goat until several hours later when we saw it from the valleybottom just where we had been !
-
Snag, no we didnt throw rocks as Troy said not to provoke it.
My bow was ok from the grizz, but got a few nicks from banging into rocks on the climbs !!
-
We went to a second cabin to spend the night. saw a black bear and a 40" moose on the way there. wasnt able to put in a stalk though
I shot a spruce grouse on the way. Got a ruffed grouse on day one too. Those birds just aint afraint huh !?
Day 6
We woke up with goats, muledeer and grizz all visible from camp
Grizz with two cubs
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/b9.jpg)
-
Man keep it comming. This is a great story!!
-
Man, that's my kind of hunting. And the grizz encounter... holy moly!! This is turning into quite a trip. I'm loving this! Keep it coming!!
-
Thanks for sharing your trip! Fantastic story and photos!
If you can, give us areview of how the Sitka pants held up in the rocks.
Thanks again!
-
Man Jacob! I thought the place in Alaska I just returned from sheep hunting was steep but Troy's area looks like it might have it beat.
Friend of mine was successful on two goat hunts with Troy and highly recommended him also. I contacted him last year and the year before and he was already booked for the season each time. I guess if I want to hunt with him I need to plan a little further ahead.
-
Super pics and story! I bet you still wake up at night sweating thinking of that griz encounter! You must have been in great shape to climb that stuff every day. Ben
-
I'm looking forward to all the photos and stories you care to post, Jacob. And when you're done with all that, I'd bet a lot of us here would enjoy hearing about your job as a gamekeeper in Denmark. Tak nemlig den stor handling og foto! :wavey:
-
Noelkman, I am kind of divided on the sitka gear stuff. I REALLY like the mountainpants, mostly because I bought them several sizes larger then my normal pants, and that, together with the nice wide fit in the legs makes for a great climbing pant that doesnt bind. they are really tough, breathe well, fairly wind"resistent" and dries quick. I have the downpourpants too but havnt used them much yet. BUT.. I must admidt I dont understand why everybody rave about the quality, its fine allright, but nothing special compared to my other clothes in the same pricerange. The sewings in my sitgagear ( espesially in the mountainpants )are quite "rude" "homemade" kinda of sewings and with loose threads allover.
BUT, I have used the mountainpants in my daily work for about a year now and they DO hold up fine !
Jack, Oh yeah, a guy really got to book way ahead on the good outfitters. How did you do in AK ?
Ben, I have been getting in shape several months before this trip and actually did better then I thought. I could keep up with Troy on the regular uphill climbs but not on the really rocky stuff ( Troy said " just trust your boots !" when he spidermanned his way over the rocks ) Couldnt keep up with him on the the climbs down either !
Woody, thanks :D Nice Danish
-
Well, day 6 we rode a little bit, climbed for several hours, got busted by the goat we were stalking
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/Beaverfootsneged.jpg)
Climbed for several hours, rode for an hour or two and slept very well ! ( even though we think we heard some grizzlies figthing in the dark ! )
Day 7
We started on our way back out of the valley
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/IMGA0173.jpg)
With the usual narrow horsetrails on steep hills !
Saw the moose again, this time with 2 cows
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/IMGA0182.jpg)
We had a looong hard climb after a goat we saw. I managed to find the exact bed were we had seen him, but now he was gone. I kept on stalking around a STEEP mountain side and suddenly saw a goat 50 yards away. Troy came up to me and we waited for a long time hoping it would feed its way closer. By now I really wished I didnt leave the rangefinder at the first cabin ( didnt want the ekstra weight ) normally I dont use one, but in this case It would have been just the ticket. I have point-on at 45 yards and are able to make pretty good shots at that range IF I know the exact distance. The goat started moving away and I decided to try for a shot. Misjugded the yardage by about 5 yards and shot right over its back ! Overadjusted on the quick second shot which went about 3 inches under the goats chest, right il line with the heart..Darn it
I will never hunt again without a rangefinder, traditional or not, this is hunting !
Then we rode for 4 hours out of the valley and drove back to the main camp, arrived there really late, ate, and slept like a dog !
-
Btw, when we climbed down we heard those gzizzlies fighting again and it sounded like it was on our mountain too !!!
Day 8
It was a GOOD day !
Oh boy, Troy had a very speciel place in store for us...
-
Fantastic story and pics!!!
-
Cool stuff! Look forward to the rest.
-
this is an awesome story!
-
...must be bedtime in Denmark;)
-

-
I can fall asleep much better to buglin' bulls instead of fightin' grizz!!!!

-
I admire your ambition traveling all the way from Copenhagen to Vancouver and beyond! Great story too.
-
Great story and pictures. Thank you for sharing.
-
great stuff! sounds like you should go back and hunt GRIZZ!
-
Oh man this was one of the worst climbs yet !
One hour on a LOUSY "trail" climbing over and under fallen trees all the time
Then 2 hours jumping from rock to rock in an active creek with lots of small waterfalls. Troy said " Dont trust the rocks, they can be slippery ! " And he was right for sure !!!!
THEN the actual climb on a steep mountainside with loose shale
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/b10.jpg)
-
Wow, what an adventure!!!!
-
We finally reached our goal, a nice saddle between two mountains. We were drenched with sweat as usual, so we changed our shirts and sat down too eat our sandwiches. Suddenly we saw a glimpse of white. further glassing confirmed that 4 goats were slowly feeding along the rigdetop on the saddle.
Troy said he was pretty sure we could get to a good ambushspot in front of the goats. We snug over there and discussed the situation.
It was a good ambushspot as the goats proberly wouldnt be able to see me before they would be in range. My best option was to sit behind a little rigde with no cover at all and just rely on my asat camo.
So I waited..and waited...and waited..SUDDENLY I heard a couple rocks falling close by and my heart started pounding madly...nothing happend..after a minut or so two billies walked by 80 yards down the mountain, darn it !! maybe this just aint going to happen I thought, just then I hear a slight noise very close by..thump thump thump goes my heart and here comes a couple of black horns in weiw behind the little rigde I am sitting behind, the horns comes closer and closer and right before the goat steps out in front of me I come to full draw.
The goat is below me only 11 yards away and at a 40 degree angle downward. It stops, looking up but not looking at me..
Still at full draw I really try to pick a spot and when the right sightpic is there my fingers let go. The arrow just dissapears in the thick white fur.
The arrow strickes a little higher then I wanted but the goat only runs 40-50 yards before it gets really weakkneed and dissapears behind a rigde. I grab my arrows and run over there just in time to see the goat thumbling down the mountainside.. YEEEHAAA I yelled high on adrenalin
The big nanny goat slided down the mountain the same way we were supposed to go down ! how lucky can a guy get !?
We backslapped and talked about the shot. I was pretty sure I had taken the aorta and maybe even shot through the shoulderblade and that was excactly what happend we found out later.
Went down to the goat
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/beaverfootsneged3.jpg)
The arrow went through the shoulderblade , nicked ribs in and out and passed all the way through just hanging on by the feathers before falling out.
We took pics, skinned the goat and started packing out with hide and meat
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/jcjccjcj/beaverfootpackingoutthehide2.jpg)

I just posted a URL to the story on http://www.bueogpil.dk so that other Danes can see what you have been up to lately.

Fantastic story and pictures! Thanks for taking us along. A mountain goat with trad equipment has to be one of the toughest achievments in trad hunting. The number of hunters to reach this pinnacle is few and far between. Congrats on your world class adventure and acheivment!!!!!
Note to self:
Never hunt with guide that does not carry gun!!
Bring pepper spray for guide that forgets gun and use whats left after bear on guide!

I have no idea how I overlooked this thread. It is one thing to look at the old Fred and Howard video of adventures from a different era, but this is now! and this is great! There is hope for all of us would be mountain hunters and your pics and story just reinforces that and for that I thank you much. I would venture that there are others out there with great, not so everyday adventures to share. Life is too short and this stuff just too precious not to share. Jacob has set the template for a great picture- story. I eagerly awate the next. THANKS JACOB!
-
Darned right! This was an awesome and inspiring story!
-
One of the best stories I've read yet. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!! You really should contact TBM and see if they will print your story.
-
Greeeeaaaaat story! I really enjoyed the suspense dealing with the tent. I really enjoyed your tale of adventure and I am quite glad your nanny didn't fall too hard. Good luck to you and your girlfriend on your new addition. Stamina just took on a whole new meaning. Thankyou so much for sharing your story and pics, I am definately waiting for the pop-up storybook version. :biglaugh:

Ditto that Mr. Shanks. I am booked for September '08. Can't wait.

Congratulations and a job well done.
-
Jacob, I feel like we've met after reading your story! What adventure do you have planned next?
-
Thank you all for the kind words, it was my pleasure to bring you along.
I have some fine hunting to enjoy here in Denmark year round, but the next biggie will be Northern BC for whopper moose in 2009.
We only live once and it might be over tomorrow, so we might as well live life to the fullest :archer:
Now you guys go enjoy the amazing hunting and nature you have all over the US. You might not all be aware of it, but you are blessed with proberbly the worlds richest opportunities for worldclass hunting at ekstremely low cost right there in your backyards.
Wish you all a great year and season

Jacob,Thanks for taking us along on your BC Goat hunt! It brought back memories of my goat hunt in Montana years ago. Unfortunately I wasn't using a bow but I had an exciting experience! I did bring back a Billy with 9' horns. You got me all excited with your experience.
Congratulations!! :clapper: :clapper:

J, thanks for taking us along on the journey.
Awesome adventure, I hope to do some hunts like that one day when money will allow it...until then it is nice to live through the stories and pictures on here.

Great stuff. Looks alot like the country I hunt here in the Yukon. I do need to take more pics though. In the high country you really have to watch out for the grizz. Never had one charge me yet, but it's always on my mind. Up here we run into them all the time. Hunting with horses can be thrilling on it's own, but the mountains you climbed are a dream to most. I am putting in for Goats this year. Your shots over and under sounds like my Dall sheep story accept you finally got your trophy. One over - one DRY fire - and one under...then I was outta arrows. You make me proud to be a traditional archer.
