Title: Ga turkey opener
Post by: Biggie Hoffman on March 22, 2008, 11:32:00 AM
I suck at this turkey huntin but Joey Buchanan's handmade calls make it possible.

I didn't hear a peep this morning and by 8 o'clock I was ready to give it up. The yard needs mowing, the garden needs to be disc'd (sp) you know what I mean. Then I saw one hen and one gobbler about 150 yards off near the creek. I pulled out Joebucks slate call and gave him some magic. At the second purr, he left the hen and ran up the hill! I have a lane mowed thru the pines and I'd set up 12 yards from it. He ran right up the lane and there was a small brushpile that blocked him from view for about 3 seconds. I drew as he ran behind it and nailed him as he came running out the other side.
He flew off down the hill towards the creek but he never made it that far. 10" beard, 3/4" spurs.

Great Northern SuperGhost, cedar arrow, Zwickey head and note the cool new seat in the background.

BigRon, joebuck said, Biggie planted a Redwood tree on his property where he liked to hunt. It must have gotten big enough for him to use.

Bigron, I never blinked until he got behind that little brushpile. I had the Sitka Gear on and a facemask.

I gotta admit, these turkeys around here aren't nearly as difficult as those darn osceolas that Marty has.

Squirrel bait, You are correct! That's exactly what my son Michael said today when he called from somewhere in the Middle East! He is a Marine with the 11th Meu on the USS Tarawa. He has known Uncle Biggie since childhood and had a little trouble with the no-blind story. In fact he thinks that the only thing blind was the gobbler!

Way to go Wayne, but no Swamp Rooter?? If I had a Swamp Rooter, I'd be usin it!!

Just got in Biggie. Congrats on a fine bird. You want tough come hunt these NF land birds. Had a jake within forty yards but not nearly close enough for me. 1st day of season and they already hushing up when they hear a cackle. I just cluck and yelp a little. To many people out right now.I usually don't hunt them till the Masters weekend but I couldn't help myself. I have'm to myself then.

Congratulations Biggie!  :banghead:  I have hunted turkeys several times with a bow but the season I usually draw here is a 7 day season so when it gets down to the last couple of days I get the smokepole out and git er done.
I take some flack for this so I always quote Biggie Hoffman from an article that I read about turkey hunting with a bow. This is the quote," turkeys just deserve a face full of number 6's!"
What am I gonna use for an excuse now?      ;)

Sorry 2big....hey, I still have no problem shooting em in the face.
Florida opens 3 weeks before Ga and then Ga runs about 6 weeks so we get plenty of opportunities at the yardcarp. Besides, Anything with feathers was made for a shotgun...you can quote me on that :-)

RC....Between you and Joey and Marty...I've learned everything you guys know. That's not everything I know, mind you, just everything you guys know...

No no Joel, I'm not a turkey hunter. I only take a bow cause ol Joebuck stimulates me to do so. He's been seriously bowhuntin turkeys for years while the rest of us blast away.
Besides, I figger if an Ole Miss grad can pull it off....anyone else should be able to...well, except maybe Marty....

Nicely done Biggie.

Had an Osceola come in on me at ten yards Saturday. He made a grand total of 1 short series of yelps. I responded and he shut up and zero'd in on me in typical Osceola fashion-nary a gobble. Of course, I blinked and blew it.
