A week and-a-half to wait before I fly out for hunt 2! Man I'm pumped already  :bigsmyl:

I've been packed for a week now! Going to have to have an un-pack, check & re-pack tommorrow, see what's missing & what I can live without.

I feel like a six year old, the week before Christmas. Not sleeping properly, can't concentrate, constantly checking driving directions/times & flight times. Permanently glued to the forum, watching for updates & info. I'm shooting around 200 arrows a day, just to make 110% sure I'm on the ball!

I've honestly never, ever looked forward to something so much in my life  :D  :D

Good luck to alla y'all first groupers. Please leave something alive out there for us to chase around! (Yes, I mean YOU Mr. Stinson  :D  :D )

I will be riding the rails again this year.  The sweat fell on the one weekend out of the year that I had a commitment I couldn't duck, dodge or delay.

Y'all whoop it up down there, and watch them senderos for javvies!

And Biggie, it ain't the pig they are afraid of, it's the fleas!

The only bad thing about beening in group two, is MISSING THE STORIES AND ACTION group one has! That they will share with you guys and gals. While we are stuck out there in the outback.
O Yeah HAHAHAHA Those of us pups will just have to live out our own adventure. Before we hear the misadventures of group UNNO.  :readit:  It will give me one thing to look forward to when I get home.
Then again we have Charlie and CK to tell us about all the misadventures of group one in living color!    :bigsmyl:

Vance, I haven’t’ even started to pack yet, it usually only takes twenty minutes for my local hunts and thirty for extended ones.  Besides, if anything is forgotten I am betting you will have an extra one in your truck.

Well, it appears the mountain lion season is coming to a close here in Montana, we took another one this past weekend    (the guy used a pistol so no pictures, here   ), the temperature is getting above fifty during the day, the snow is melting, so I am starting to get excited  about my trip south with Santa next week.  Besides, there are  bobcats and mountain lions in Texas and the way my hunting has been going lately, I just might get lucky.  Figured I had better take advantage of the warm weather and condition my body for the extreme heat down south so I went snowshoe hunting.  Didn’t see any but had a good time hiking the hills and stump shooting, if my shooting is as good on live animals as it was today on stumps there will be some nice, short, red trails to follow.  Folks, I am getting ready to thaw out and climb a couple of those bumps you call hills, the count down is on! :D

One last check-in and I'm gone. I got home from Laredo two nights ago. Awoke to go check hunters on several ranches since I made it home early. I lost the front wheel assembly(wheel bearings) on the F-250. The repair shop put me one day behind schedule as I was scheduled to leave yesterday. Well, $230 later and I have a new rear u-joint and a viberation that is still in the wheel assembly. LOL! Parts on order and should arrive today sometime. Of course this is $550 additional and yet another day later on the schedule. Borrowed vehicles to do last minute running, shopping, etc., yesterday. Cell phone towers were down all day and made things even harder to get done. Still haven't made it to check on hunters. I did mangge to get a few things packed but with the truck going into the shop, there is nowhere to put the items that are packed and ready. I sincerely hope this is not a sign of things to come. I can't take much more stress!!!!!

Lamb did show up last night and is his general "non-stressed" self. He keeps saying it's going to be ok but if the truck issues take any longer, I'll be arriving a day late to "Sweat". Not that I won't already be sweating!!!!!! Hope I remember to pack a bow after all this crap! See you guys when we return aroung the 22 or 23 of March. Long live The Texas Sweat! CK

I'm just Bettin that somewhere in Trad Gang vill tonight, there are some who are enduring a SLEEPLESS NIGHT  :banghead:    :banghead:

Isn't that what these Communal Hunts are all about....Excitement......Anticipation and the gettin READY. Then when ya do get there it's ALL bout the fellowship around the fire and in the field...spending time with FRIENDS old and New. Oddly that time seems to pass way quicker than the night before the departure.

This time tomorrow evening old fires will be FLAMING as G1 assembles to partake in the MEAL that will kick "SWEAT 07" off. Prayers to all you fellows as you travel and for your families in you absence. "TAKE NO PRISONERS".........HAVE A BALL

We'll see ya on the 15th

I sure am going to miss the heartburn that I've experienced on the sweat hunts from the great mexican cooking!

Best of luck to all the hunters involved with the sweat.  Curtis will undoubtably pull another rabbit out of the hat and put a wonderful hunt together.

I can't wait to see the pictures.

My wife is expecting in May so it wasn't in the cards for me to go this year.

Curt,  have you been able to work out any insider information sources this year?

This endeavor may become quite a challenge.

After 6 phone calls, and 3 different SWEATERS calling I was able to find out that #1 They are headed back to the ranch, with everyone in tow. They are hoping to be in the hunt by 1:00 PM TST.
#2 They are seeing critters around camp and it is WARMMMMMMMM 70+.

Charlie said bring Bycycle's if I could  :scared:    :scared:

All that I talked to said that, at best cell service was very BAD. There for updates may be less frequent than last year. All seem very pumped about the area chosen for this years Sweat plus the fact that it's "5 DAYS".
JC said that a LARGE Mexican dinner was enjoyed by all last evening in Del Rio (^*%#@* Guys)

Yep Curt Limber up the fingers....I'll be passin it off ta you on Tuesday......3 days and a wake up  :clapper:    :clapper:    :clapper:

I just got off of the phone with Charlie at the ranch. He said that the guys were spotting lots of game, mostly of the goat and sheep variety. No javie or hogs yet. Terry and Tom already have sheep on the ground (yesterday, I believe)and several other hunters have had exciting stalks. They've been doing some bowfishing at nite and everyone seems to be enjoying their "tall tale" sessions around the campfire.

Hey Guys,
I had to break down and call the emergency number to the camp....it was work related so it won't count against me!   :saywhat:

JC said there is a lot of walking....Vance, I guess that is what the bikes would be for?????
He saw many sheep and a few deer. Went fly fishing and caught some bass.
That's all I know....I was told to check in after 7:00 in the evenings so I will help keep you guys posted on what I find out.

You guys be careful traveling. I know you are all very excited and I am sure the wives are ready for you to leave! You are all like boys at Christmas time...reminds me of Chase and Connor waiting for Santa......  :biglaugh:

Chase and Connor have 6 boys for a sleep over tonight so I will try to get an update if I can dodge the darts and pizza runs! Boys can really eat when they are having fun....   :help:

Miss Kim,
Darling, if you only knew how much like a kid at Christmas I am right now, you'd get a good laugh! I wasn't even excited until I talked to JC on Friday after he and Terry landed and then it hit me, one week to go.......I don't think I've got more than 3 hours sleep a nite since. I want to thank you and JC for the invite to Bobby to stay with you and the boys this summer while JC and I go get a couple of those Canadian Bruins. That is awful sweet of you and greatly appreciated  :clapper:    :clapper:    :clapper:

Bob,
No problem. I think he would have a blast. They usually have friends over when Dad is gone to help the time fly. We have always wanted our home to be the place the boys and their friends like to hang out. That way we know what they are doing! I spent $70 on food for two days to keep them going. Boy do they eat! It is worth it because we get to know their friends and know what they are doing...who they are hanging around with. What friendships we want to help the cultivate, and those we don't!
Bobby is welcome to come...we would enjoy him.
JC didn't sleep much the night before he left....mostly tossed and turned!

Wolfman,
Are any of you right in the head????? You guys are crazy about hunting I know that. I told JC after the last trip to Tx that I should get hazzard pay for washing his camo....it had cactus spines in it!

Brenda and I feel the same way and it has saved us a lot of headaches with our other children. Bobby is as excited to be coming to "the farm" and swimming in the creek and riding horses as I am to be going on the hunt! I'm sure he will have the time of his life.

Jeff,
You may not hunt things that bite back, but you still ain't right in the head, LOL!

OK...I have an update. I just spoke with Mr. Gary Keller....he is holding down the fort while the others are off playing. Just before I called they headed out to do some evening hunting. He said they should be back in about 2 hours.

Here is the take so far....lots of game spotted. Dave Stinson got a big barbedeaux...don't know what it is or if that is how you spell it.
Terry,John,Mel and Tom all got angoras. Curtis got two large carp with a Delta Bow.

That's the story as of now....Oh, and the Tecate is holding up for those of you worried. He said that everyone came well stocked!
I sent a batch or two of homemade cookies that it seems that a few are hording. From the sound of things, those who know about them are not sharing!
Guys are so funny about those things.....
I will post if I find out any more. This will have to hold you who are chomping at the bit!

Sweet Vance,
I don't think there will be any left from the sound of it.
Be careful driving. I know you are excited but TX will be there when you get there!

I got so busy dealing with boys that I just noticed the time. I am not going to call now because some may have already gone to bed.
What was I thinking having all these boys?  :help:  They have worn me out!
Anyway, I will post if I find out anything....
Take care and be careful.

Thank you Miss Flo for the update. If you were talking to your husband in the cabin I will bet you could hear all the laughter and stories in the back ground! When I spoke with Joe it sounded like they were having a regular house party...just no music.   :D

Herb,

I talked to Vance tonight and he and Walt was stuck in traffic in Denver on their way down from Cheyenne to Tejas. They should be there in time to meet with G1 on their way off the ranch. Ron and I fly out of Richmond at 1pm on Friday and should be in San Antonio around 6pm. We'll grab our luggage, the SUV and should meet up with Vance and Walt and Robatto in Del Rio around 8:30 or 9:00pm Friday nite for some TexMex and Tecates.........

Well,
I just spoke with JC. It seems the only critter taken today was a carp by Whip. Joe says it was a clean shot through both eyes.

I could hear the tales being told in the back ground...they sounded pretty tall!

Joe said he and Curtis had some schooling on life today by Charlie sitting around camp. Now I would bet that was really something.

That's all I've got for you. JC sounded pretty tired and didn't want to spend time on the phone....he might miss something good!  :)

Okay, I have spoken with Vance TWICE today....boy are they excited!
I think those boys are thawing out fast and already starting to melt.

I am not sure if Wal-Mart is going to be able to handle G1 and G2 meeting on their bench. All that testosterone in one place....  :scared:

Just talked to JC and he and Tippit both got angoras today. They waited until the last day and found the ones they were looking for.
JC said something about me eating goat....not very excited about that. We will see....I guess the verdict will be out.

Sounded like they were making sure that no Tecate would be left behind. G2 you should probably make another Tecate run along the way.  :biglaugh:

That's all I've got for now....

Guys.....if you would....please keep this thread open for posts of up-dates from group 2...and those of you in group 1 post your stories on the 'Tales of Tx Sweat' thread.

It will be much less confusing that way by keeping all the stories from the hunters on one thread........and be much better if we only have one thread to archive that will contain all the stories and pics.

Well, I'm snowed in and can't seem to make it out of CT!!  I went straight from my wife's ultrasound this morning (definitely a bow BTW) to the airport to try to catch an earlier flight -cancelled.  My flight was first delayed, then cancelled.  I no sooner signed up for standby on another - cancelled.  The soonest they could get me to the ranch was Monday night!

I'm looking into taking a train as far south as I need to and then pick up a flight, but things are looking bleak.

I dragged my worn out beat up cactus spine filled body to bed. It was all worth it to hunt with such a great group of guys . It was good to meet some new people and spend time with old friends, even the new friends now feel like old friends.
Thanks for the traveling medicine kit Stinson, you made it easier.I will try to get some pictures up when I get a chance. It was great to meat up with Walt and Vance on the way out as well , thanks for the antelope horn Vance.

Just got off the phone with Curtis....G2 launch is only moments away......but they still got that hour and a half on a dirt road ahead of them.....

Curtis has taken a ram with the LDB....and He and Mark Horne have taken a slough of carp with Hope.

I called the ranch last night to see how the first day went... forgot about the time difference though and missed everyone except Rick.    "[dntthnk]"
7 out of the 10 hunters arrived safely and they wasted no time at camp before getting out to hunt.

I just got off the phone with Curtis.  The guys are seeing lots of animals... and spending lots of time in camp shooting the breeze!  :)

Some shots have been fired with a few connecting with their intended targets.  Sounds like robtattoo has two porcupine and a carp in the bag.  Walt has been hunting hard and Curtis says the others should get up and run the ridges some more   ;)

They're all having a great time!!  Now Brent promised he'd put something on the ground for me, and he seems like the kind of guy who sticks to what he says, so I'm expecting there's gonna be a lot more action in the next few days!

I sent ROB some custom arrows down to the ranch so that he could shoot something with them.  I hope the rabbit met his maker at the end of a custom made cedar.  I hope you guys enjoyed yourselves while the rest of had to retrace our steps back to work while we were wishing we were there.  Congrats on another great year guys.

Yes Sir, that I did!

This 'un was taken on Wednesday, around mid-morning. I was taking a drive around, just to see what I could see. Rick & Pop pulled me up & let me know there was  big parcel of mixed goats on the South ridges, about mid way up the hills beyond the windmill.

I took a look-see over that away & found them all feeding & relaxing along the ridgeline. I'd actually decided that I wasn't going up into the hills anymore, after twisting my ankle the day before. I figured if I managed to see anything down in the draws I'd take a run at it, but that was all. That all got shot to hell when I laid eyes on this group!

I reckoned that the best approach would be to drive a half mile or so, further round the hill & try to get above & downwind of the group. That worked out just fine. I fairly sprinted up the mountainside & got above 'em without being spotted & started down towards the main group. Now, I'd not hunted this side before, I'd been mainly concentrating on the North side & the Angoras. The North ridges have a lot of good cover in the Cedars, moving from bush to bush is fairly straightforward. Hmmmmmmm. Not quite so much cover on this side..  :(   I ended up having to slide all the way back down to the ridgeline (about halfway down the hill) on my back. I dumped my possibles bag around 30' from the top, to keep it all quiet, although I did keep my camera handy.

Here's the group as I saw them.....

The main group was around 45-50 yds in front & to the left of me. I had virtually no cover from here on down. Up until that point I'd been using rocks & prickly pear as cover (NOT to be recommended    ) I was moving at a rate of around 3' every 5 minutes. There were a few 'lookouts' that kept staring right at me, not sure what I was, but not really alerting the rest of the flock. Every time they'd turn, or drop head to feed I'd grab another 3 or 4 feet of ground. I finally managed, after about 45 minutes, to get to about 28yds. I was in the process of doing a 'no-hands, draw-the-bow, situp' (I now have abs, as opposed to just the one big one) when one little white 'lookout' finally spotted me for a threat & sneezed a warning to the rest    Off they went at a good lick, back down the mountain, leaving me all hot, bothered, scratched & sore a good 120 yds behind 'em   :(

Well don't stop there Rob!! Details Man Details!!!!
Title: Re: "SWEAT" UPDATES
Post by: robtattoo on March 24, 2007, 03:34:00 PM
Well, I sat there, kicking myself fo a good 15 minutes, took a drink & a chaw on some jerky (look, I picked up the lingo & everything!) had a smoke & watched 'em start to feed again, down at the bottom of the hillside. They started working back in my direction so I figured, 'heck, I gotta go down there anyways' I went back up on top to retrieve my pack & bounded off around the corner to try & keep downwind of the group. I made my way back down the hillside, keeping nice and low and quiet & finally got myself set in a nice little bush. I set myself up behind my bow, just like Mark & Curtis had shown me & waited for the group to get closer. And closer. And closer........

I got to concentrating on the big Red-head. Hard.
I was aware of the rest of the group, especially a little black number who struck me as a bit too small to shoot. I fnally got Ol' Red in my sights (so to speak) I figured that if'n I leant back ever so slightly, I'd have a clear shot, right through a gap in the brush. Slam Dunk, job done.

Unfortunately (yes, again!) as I started to come to draw, the little black feller (who was, by this point, a whole 8 or 9 feet away) saw me move, hollered & blew the whole darned lot of 'em about a hundred yards down the treeline. I didn't get any pics from here on in, I was shaking so much I'd probably only got a huge picture of my own eye anyway.......

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention, BigRon was watching this whole scenario unfolding from his vantage point on the next peak. I'd been wondering what they were all staring at, when they weren't staring at me! Ron was up there trying to catch their attention so's I could put a sneak on 'em! What a great guy!  :D
Heck, I didn't even know he was there! That ASAT camo really works!

The arrows were sitka spruce.  If you look at his quiver they are the yellow crowned ones with the splicing in the feathers.  Im guessing the arrows flew great for you and Im super happy that they brought enough luck with them to get you a goat.  Congrats...

Terry - Are you sure?

By all means, it's nice to be back home for a few days but I'm still suffering badly from the "after-sweat" syndrome. Curtis, Charlie and I have talked about this malady before and it seems that we've all suffered from it for some period following the Sweat. It's like a bad withdrawal syptom, brought on by being denied the wealth of companionship we've enjoyed with our best friends (now family), both old and new, the excitement of the plethora of hunting stories told over and over, the laughs we enjoy during the mid-day and evening gatherings, the sense of oneness that is developed over the course of the hunt, and the desire to keep it going as long as we can. Or then again, it could be simple exhaustion!

I know I have a wealth of memories to cherish as well as a renewed pop in my knees and back each time I stand and attempt to walk, but they'll be gone (I hope) by the time the next Sweat rolls around.

As the participants of this years Sweats roamed the hills I was able to make some observations that you may find interesting:

Biggest Chow Hound – Ron (BigRonHuntAlot) Andrews by a hind-quarter.

Most Jalapenos Eaten – Jeff (Tippit) Springer tied with Rob (Robtatto) Peel, with Bob Walker running loosely (but frequently) in second.

Most Tecate consumed – Bob Walker, Bob’s big but the Jalapeno’s helped him in this running.

“Iron Man” designation – Dave (HuntIt) Stinson, followed closely by Ted Fry and Walt Francis. All three ran a close race for time spent on the slopes; it was only Dave’s time in the river and the non-stop drive home that gave him the lead as this years toughest Sweater.

Brightest Legs -  Brent (Hormoan) McCormick, suffered sunburn on his legs from exposure to Charlie’s flashlight.

Best Cookies – Miss (JC) Kim Coots. . sorry Group 2 didn’t get to participate in the judging.

Biggest Hat – Larry (Caddo) Dix, leave it to a fellow Texan to dominate.

Strangest Hat – Terry “Bushyhat” Green.

Most Carp by Bowfisherman -  Mark Horne, I lost count of how many.

Best Bowfishing Shot -  Joe (Whip) Lasch, carp in-the-eye!

Most Unique Bowfishing Kill – Rob (Robtatto) Peel – Talapia.

“Bull Shipper” Extraordinaire -  Vance (Iron Bull) Brewer, the “Bull” just comes natural for this guy.

The Next Butt I’m Gonna Kick as soon as I see him -  Terry (Mr. Green) Green

Biggest Billy – Rob (Robtatto) Peel

Biggest Ram -  Dave (HuntIt) Stinson

Biggest Nanny  - Terry Green, followed closely by Joe (JC) Coots

Biggest Ewe  -  Ted (Accidental) Fry
