'bout that time aint it fellers(and killdeer) so, is it happenin'?
-
Man wish I could go!!!!! :(
-
The host of that hunt has moved, so it is a very iffy thing. Perhaps it will need to be hosted by another, or scaled down to a day hunt.
There certainly are a lot of squirrels out there this year! :readit:
Killdeer
-
Let me know when and where... I believe that it was in Powhatan last year
Adam
-
We've got to do some kind of skwerl hunt... It's required by law, right? I've got plenty of "when" but pretty short on "where"...
-
There are WMAs...
-
There are several that I hunt in the centeral VA region, what sort of date looks good? Big game is over on the 6th. Skwerl and Rabbit keep going through the end of Jan.
-
I'm watching this one.
-
me too!
-
Come on Guys...give me a date and we can meet at Powhatan WMA
Adam
-
wheres powhatan wma?
-
It's near this sign...
A bit of a hike for me, but doable.
Killdeer
-
is that pete darby on far left?
-
Bob Walker is one the left. 13,20,27 are the Sat. after deer closes. Am checking this one as well.
-
20th works!
(ill use the whole, mom, lemme go as a birthday gift!)
-
I could do the twentieth.
Has anybody ever hunted squirrel in June? We can do that this year on some WMAs.
Fleas. :saywhat:
Killdeer
-
The 20th. sounds good to me, I think that this is the first year that we have had a June season.
We can start in the morning, have lunch and make a day of it. If the weather is good, you can camp anywhere in the WMA.
Adam
-
Is there a place for targets on the WMA? Might have to bring some atlatls, too...
-
There is at Amelia WMA. I t is only 2-3 miles from Powhatan. I could meet there. It's a bit more crowed ed during gun season but in Jan it would be fine.
Adam
-
I have to work on the 20th. I am off the 13th and 27th.
-
I have the place, and it is private land, but it is a long drive from most of ya'll and I don't want to take away from this annual event, just an offer.I will be hosting a rabbit hunt after deer season though if ya'll are interested.(with dogs)
Stephen
-
Have truck, will travel. Killie, you want to ride with me and Joe? Plenty of room.
-
I could do the 20th at Powhattan or Amelia. I'll bring a freind too.
-
so its lookin like the 20th folks, real question now is powhatan or amelia?
-
Amelia has some kind of range and Powhatan doesn't? That right? If so, I'd say Amelia if everything else is equal. Never been to either place, so I don't know...
-
if amelia has a range, that solves the problem of whose bringing a block/ target to fling arras at at camp, anybody got a big shelter thing we could use?
-
So I guess that it Amelia WMA on the 20th. Lookin forward to it :clapper:
-
Here is more info
http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/wmas/detail.asp?pid=11
-
My truck's bigger'n your truck, Knifey! I was thinking of going ahead and taking Friday off and spending the night somewhere close by the hunt, just so I don't end up all raggedied out before I even string the bow.
I have a Black Hole target that I will throw in the truck bed. Now I gotta go look up Amelia.
Killdeer :campfire:
-
Excuse me but I'm a little confused. I don't get the correlation between a rifle range and a traditional archery hunt. If the range is the same as the one at C.F. Phelps WMA and I'm sure it is. There is absolutely no place for archery target shooting. I think we could find some corner of a field to use as a practice range though.
As far as a shelter I have a big 8 person tent we could use.
I'll bring my beer target (1/2 deer, 1/2 bear). My friend that I'll invite has 20 McKenzie 3D's. I'm sure he'll bring one or two if we want.
OH...darn I better start getting some arrow together, we've already done four or five squirrel hunts and the stock is low.
:banghead: :archer:
-
It's been a few years since I was at the Amelia site, but it had several archery targets, including a permanent elevated platform stand. Things may have changed, though.
-
alright so who all is in?
-
Two hands are up in the air here -- me and my son.
-
Not far to travel for me, I will come
Adam
-
I'll be there and maybe another guy too.
-
I hope this is helpful.
Public Sighting-In Range
After a brief closure for facilities maintenance, the shooting ranges at Amelia Wildlife Management Area re-opened to the public on September 1, 2006 with some changes to the schedule of operation and rules. Three shooting ranges are available, including a rifle sighting-in range, a clay-bird shotgun range, and an elevated station for archery practice. Facilities are not available for handguns. The Amelia WMA ranges are normally open to the public from September 1 - March 31 on every day of the week except Monday. The ranges are closed every Monday for maintenance. The ranges may also occasionally be closed at other times as posted in advance on-site.
Directions
Located between U.S. routes 60 and 360, the Amelia Wildlife Management Area is about 25 miles southwest of Richmond and ten miles north of Amelia Courthouse. From U.S. Route 60, at Flat Rock, turn south on route 622; right onto route 610; and right onto route 604 to Mason’s Corner. From U.S. Route 360 the management area is north on route 604. Consult the map for detail.
Here's a map of the WMA.
http://www.dgif.state.va.us/wmas/maps/amelia.pdf
-
Just one thing to note...you cannot hunt rabbit on Amelia WMA, it is by quota only. I know that we are going "Skwerl" hunting, but if you want bunnies too we will have to go to Powhatan.
Adam
-
guys, just tell me where, ill kill anything
and when we figure out where it is for sure, well sort out the rest of the details
-
ttt
-
Anybody planning on camping down there? We might be up for it.
-
Is this By sortta invite or will let a heel come north of the line? Second is anybody coming from east of richmond?
-
You guys are gonna make me burn a Vacation Day. LOL
-
You guys are gonna make me burn a Vacation Day. LOL
-
I just spent a month in the woods...but I could be talked into camping. If the weather is good (for January). A quiet room with heat sounds mighty good too, to a postal worker at Christmas! I was thinking of scouting the WMA on Friday, and renting a motel room if it didn't look good to me for a tent.
If a tarheel don't mind spending time with northern kin, we will tell the sheriff not to stop you at the state line, Cleve.
Do we have more than a dozen? Do we have to contact Amelia about a group activity? (Check the WMA rules)
Killdeer
-
Camping is an option, just wait and see ot the weather, It seems to me that we have around ten/twelve, I can bring food if somone has a grill. Looking forward to it!
-
Hope that Chris and I will make it to either Amelia or Powhatan.Convenient that he is relatively close. The 20th is the date, right.
Good year in the woods, anyone want some jerky?
-
Heels are welcome, I lived in NC for a while and they are quite civilized :biglaugh:
Adam
-
Well is it going to be Amelia or Powhatan? If it's Amelia, we could meet at the range. I've tried to call the office at Amelia 4 time on Friday and twice on Saturday...no answer and no machine.
Does anyone know if one would be better than the other for our purposes. I'd hate to have to pass up a shot on a nice wabbit at Amelia because it's quota. :bigsmyl:
-
I didn't see ANY game at Powhatan.. I can bring a grill for over a campfire, but we don't have no Weberlike thingie. I usually bring a microscopic two-burner stove for coffee and soup.
Killdeer
Tom, I am first in line, and my stomach started growling at the sight of the word "jerky"!
-
Wife just give me the go ahead, if I could meet someone east of richmond that would be good I'll be driving up the morning of the hunt.
-
hey tom can i follow you down?
-
Aaron,
I ususally stay at my nephews the night before but can give you good directions to Powhatan, not familar with Amelia but maybe Chris knows, we can discuss before hand.
Have(or will make) jerky & will travel. Amelia sounds good but if they are close to each other why not one in the morning and the other in the the aft? The Sheetz makes a good meeting place and is good for a cup of coffee at least.
As far as alot of arrows as someone mentioned, 1 arrow seems more than adequate. Hopefully this year will be different but the gathering is the fun part-at least for me.
-
There were very few rabbit at Amelia WMA when I was hunting it. That is the purpose of the draw. They are trying to get population up. The squirrels were a plenty though. I havent hunted it in a couple of years.
-
I haven't hunted Amelia for a while, I do see game at Powhatan, but I think that we should meet at the range at Amelia, if people want to try for Rabbits in the afternoon we can just ride over to Powhatan, they are only a few miles apart.
I have a two burner stove also.
-
This is sounding good! :bigsmyl:
-
Add one more! I just told Mockingbird about it, and he said it sounds like fun. I know that some of you think he must be my imaginary friend, except for those who have met him at Baltimore or at our local range. But he really really exists, and while he doesn't shoot his bows much, he loves hunting squirrels and starting campfires. And he is a much nicer person than I am. Mostly.
Killdeer :jumper:
-
just got some flu flus this weekend boys and gal, ITS ON!
-
Did we just get called boys and girls by a seventeen year old?
Killdeer :saywhat:
-
Good Luck. :goldtooth:
-
haha! yes you did! 's all in fun! where are the walkers...all 18 of em' :bigsmyl:
-
Hmmm, I'll have to think about it. That's a two hour haul for me and if we're going to start at dawn.....
-
C'mon Chuck, If I am going to burn a Vacation Day surely you can set the alarm a few hours early :knothead: :bigsmyl:
-
Come up the night before and camp. My son and I might be doing that. Might be camping in a Holiday Inn if the weather's poor... ;)
-
does the wma have campsites?
-
You can camp anywhere on a WMA, I may camp the Friday or Sat night.
Adam

Well, I'd advise against doing so on the rifle range. :D
-
I'm on the fence for this one but it might be doable. Sure would be good to see some old faces and meet some new ones as well. I always enjoyed the socializing more than the actual hunt.
Clint
-
Any place to do aerial targets there, anybody want to. got a bunch of foam at work.
-
You could use the shotgun range, I will be camping on the rifle range :banghead:
-
KlingSpatter, why ain't you comin'? I live further away than you do! Besides, we need somebody to babysit the monkey.
It's not a walker, it's a portable bow rack. :readit:
Killdeer
-
babysit...? come on i aint that young...
-
If you were my son, the doctors would have worried about me having you so late in life. :saywhat: Now fetch me a spit cup and some Depends.
Killdeer
-
Killy, don't you know that youth is wasted on the young, yet. One of these days far in the future he will look back and maybe see what the oldsters were saying.
Clint, hope you are able to make it!
-
My main concern is that my kid's birthdays are the 23 and 25 and I'm not sure which weekend we'll have their party.
-
The weekend of the twenty-seventh, of course!
-
chuck, my 18th is on the 23rd! bring em along! well have a party!
-
Meeting at Dawn?
-
Shoot, y'all otta be in the woods by then! 'Sides, dawn is about seven AM these days. What're we gonna do 'til then?
:jumper:
-
eeeeaaasssyy now I gotta 3.5-4 hour drive up there...... what about mmmmmmm noon :bigsmyl:
-
noon?! your crazy! i say we should meet at dawn at the range, and bs and shoot some target till it gets to be a little warmer for the tree rats to emerge
which wma has the range were meeting at?
-
I suppose somebody will want to come out of the woods at noon, and maybe they could let an ol' tarheel in on what's up. My MO is to use the chilly time to get to a likely place, and be there when the rats come out. I tend to want to be out all day. Social obligations and peer pressure are the only things that could keep me from doing that. And the older I get, the less social obligations and peer pressure affect me. :bigsmyl:
Killdeer
-
you morning folks are a hoot, Mrs. deer is there any mail going and com'n these days hehehehe. Might bring a freind with me (yes I do have 1) transplant from MI willing to put up the wheelie thing for a day.
-
We should be eating Skwerl by Noon. LOL Who's cookin?
-

I've got a little backpack stove. We could par boil and have squirrel biscuits and gravy for lunch. Actually I've also got a 2 burner Coleman stove somewhere.
Should I bring the big 2 room tent, it's an 8 person tent?
:coffee:

top! :wavey:

Hey guys (and Killey),
I just found this thread, thanks to themonkey. Bobby and I will be there again this year too.
Just lemme know what the final decision is on the place. Killey, sharpen up that kid pokin stick again this year, Bobby's already looking forward to it, LOL! And Tom, I'm already looking forward to the jerky, yum!! Sounds like we'll have a nice turnout if everyone shows this year. We'll prolly be camping if the weather permits.
Bob
-
I dunno, Bob, Bobby might be bigger'n me by now! I am looking forward to seeing you two again. I would like to hunt Amelia, just because I haven't seen it before. Powhatan looks awfully squirrelly, we might have just been there on a "dead" day that year.
Killdeer
-
Are you guys camping the Friday or Saturday nights?
-
That depends entirely on the weather. I will NOT, for just a weekend hunt, chance taking the tent down wet. I have no place to set it up and dry it at home.
I do intend to find some wood to bring for a fire. :campfire:
-
uk,
im camping, lookout for the big metal tent that says "dakota sport" on the side, thatll be me :bigsmyl:
-
I might be able to come up Sat. and hunt. But I've changed enough diapers here that "the Monkey " is on his own. We might just have to let him run around all naturell and just watch where we step??? :archer:
-
:biglaugh:
It will be a treat, Tommy!
-
yall are makin me have second thoughts about being in the woods with you people and bows :bigsmyl: :biglaugh:
-
We'll be there Friday nite for sure, maybe Saturday nite too. Like Killey said, depends on the weather.
Bob
-
ttt
-
SpringSplutter, ol' pal ol' buddy, you a local boy...what's your assessment of the WMAs and which should we hunt?
Killdeer
-
Well, I believe the best place would be Powhatan WMA. It has close to 4000 acers. Most of which are hardwoods. It also has a place for you to camp if I remember right.
Amilia??? Well, It just seemed to be mostly dove fields to me. Really didn't care for it that much ..Even though it was a little closer drive for me.... And the Archery range there ain't nothing but a few rotten 2x4's and rotten hey. That is unless they changed it since last year.... But, I'm willing to go where ever you folks decide. I might not even be able to draw a bow yet. It's the company and B.S.ing that I look forward too.
-
powhatan it is!
somebody bring a block and tell me where to meet at powhatam!
-
I will bring my first bow for ya 'Clutter. It's a double shelf 25 pounder.
:archer:
-
I think I'd prefer Powhatan WMA. I have topo and aerial maps of both.
-
Never hunted Powhatan but it really doesnt matter to me, I just want to meet everyone and have fun. May have to bring some venison to cook in case we don't see any Squirrel. :wavey:
-
I'll call them tomorrow and see what we have to do to get a camp site... And dirctions.....I'll tell them about a dozen of us. Have we nailed down a date yet??????
-
jan 20th
-
The best area for camping that I know of is if you drive into the main entrance, park near Sunfish Pond , walk across the dam, up a small rise there is a clearing with a couple of old fire pits. I t is not more than 100 trds from the parking area and is at the start of "Skewrl Ridge Trail" I normaly hunt on the other end of the WMA but there is no used camping areas there that I have seen. Plus it will easier for people to meet at the main access area. Ihave a block target! Looking forward to it :campfire:
-
UK you think you could look at the map and give the directions on how to get there to the main entrance?
-
http://www.dgif.state.va.us/wmas/maps/powhatan.pdf
Here's a link to a map of the place we'll be hunting.
http://www.dgif.state.va.us/wmas/detail.asp?pid=18
Guess we all can meet up at the end of Rt.662... The end of the main entrance near sunfish pond. Just like UK said..
-
That would be the place
-
Simple directions from the sign that Kathy took a picture of a few years ago would be appreciated. Also a time of the meeting.
-
Tom, I been lookin' at it, and can't figger where the sign was. My plan was to attack from Richmond, and head south from 60 on 627. Then it's a left on 662 to the parking area.
Anybody see where I'm messing up?

Killdeer
60 to 627 to 662 is how I plan on going in. I haven't been there in about 10 years, so I don't remember where much is or was.
-
Bowbender you're right on the money.
Tom, She took the pic in the parking lot of the "Field Office" that's on the map. ...Just drive past the Field Office going west on Route 60 and about 2 miles on the left is Rt. 627. Make another left onto Rt. 662 and go straight. If your going Sat. morning just look for a bold, fat, really good looking, whitty man in the parking area. Dat be me.
-
Thanks, Tom, and I do remember you just as you described yourself. What time and see you all there!!
-
For those of you comming from No. VA take 95 to 295 west, 64 west to 288 south, to rt 60. it saves you a bunch of time. 288 is not shown on all maps as it is quite new.
-
I'll be coming from Stafford to 208 in Spotsylvania then 208 across Lake Anna to 522 to 60 to 627 to 662. It's not interstate but I like it better.
-
Just remember folks ...If you're bringing kids make sure you dress them in several thick layers of clothes. And maybe some safty goggles..... From what i gather Illdeer is going to bring her poking stick.. Monkey, I have a bullet proof vest from when I was a Cop. You want to buy it cheap??
I'm planning to be there Sat. morning around 6:00am so I can bum some breakfast off somebody for I go hunting around 7:00. :coffee:
-
I still haven't decided what I'm going to do. Anyone taking a 2-way? Can we agree on a channel in advance for late-comers? I'd have to work up some flu-flu arrows and order some blunts.
-
I always have a set of two-ways in my truck. Rememberin to put it on my side is another thing... LOL
-
how cheap we talkin here tom? :bigsmyl:
i think i could wrastle up some walkies too...
and if im still asleep somebody wake my a$$ up!
-
If'n we all bring them there walkie talkie things it would really help us during the squirrel drive. Monkey, I've got a perfect place to set you up for the drive.... No trees to miss up you're veiw and the brush is low too. Be a perfect place to set so we can drive a few greys right by your stand. :goldtooth:
-
Is anyone bringing any Cooking Apparatus? I would think that we ( I ) will want something to eat... LOL I can bring a Gas Grill if needed. Will need help to unload though. :readit:
-
I've got 3 walkie talkies. What channel should we use?
-
lucky 7...
stands? i thought you just walked around and treed the little rats...
-
Hey Robert, You bringing any thing to cook on ?
-
Monkey,Naw?? Dat be to easy. I'll hook ya up. Trust me. :readit:
-
when you say "hook ya up"
do you mean take me to the colder part of the wma, say youll drive some squirrels to me, then leave me there for hours?
-
So you've played this game before? :knothead:
-
Originally posted by BigRonHuntAlot:

-
All right! a CATERED squirrel drive! Virginia hunting at its best! :clapper:
Killdeer
-
I will bring a camp stove
-
I'll have a couple of walkies and can bring a 2 burner stove that hooks to a propane tank. Maybe I'll brign a ham and shoulder from that Tejas hog and javie to go with Tom's jerkey....
-
Sounds like more eating than hunting!
-
It's all in your priorities... :biglaugh:
-
Should I bring the big tent for a place to congregate just in case the weather is not great ? :campfire:
-
Well, if you have a place to set it up at home to dry it... :bigsmyl:
-
Well, I still haven't been able to get ahold of the DNR man to get a permit for 12+ people to use the place for a funkytion. So I guess we're going to have to stay in groups of 11? :bigsmyl:
-
Splutter, I don't chew tobacco.
Much.
Sheesh.
Killdeer
BTW, has there been a formal count of attendees? I don't think you'll get anybody at DGIF tomorrow, either. Governmental types have off.
You HAVE been trying DGIF, right? We don't do DNR in Virginia. We do lots of other stuff, though. :D
-
Silly Killy, I have no idea how many are going to show up or camp out??? I've been calling the Office up here in Richmond .But I can't seem to get ahold of anyone???
-
Happy New Year, Stutter. :banghead:
-
Are people thinking of camping before or after?
Adam
-
That was discussed at the start, and all through the thread. :knothead:
-
ttt
-
Well it looks like I may be able to show up for at least a portion of the day. I ordered some hex heads and will be trying to make some flu-flus. For those of you that have radios do you have the privacy sub-channels? If not shall we just use channel 7 as suggested? I don't know if I'll get up early enough to beat the dawn but I'll give it a try.
-
im out-lack o money, and my first day roping cattle is the 20th.... sorry folks  :banghead: :( :( :(

Sorry you can't make it. We can always try again in June...yeah we can do that this year!
-
Are we going to hunt at the Powhatan WMA or the Amelia WMA?
-
C'mon, Ron, there are only ten pages, and the answer is in there somewhere!
OK, Ok, I give. :campfire:
-
Yeah I saw that but was hoping for a different answer. LOL ARE there any Squirrel at the Powhatan WMA? :saywhat: I have never hunted the Powhatan WMA so I don't necessarily want to doubt it but I havent heard alot of praises as far as the squirrel are concerned
-
I was down there on Monday. It was at around noon so I didn't see any squirrels, but it did look promising. The only area I was at was by the Bass pond. I drove around for about 10 minutes then had to head on back home. I was in the area on personal family business and had to see if I could still find the place after 10 or 15 years.
http://www.hunting-fishing-virginia.com/wma/powhatan.pdf
Talondale , channel 7 on the radios sounds good to me.
Seeing it will be on a Saturday, I'm thinking of bring the electronic Crow call and decoys. If the Squirrel hunting get slim around noon we can let the flu-flu's fly. WHAT SAY YE?
-
You folks have fun. Looks like we can't make it -- one of my kid's birthday parties was rescheduled for that day. I'll think about y'all when I'm bowling and eating pizza with a pack of feral 8 year olds. :jumper:
-
Gonna miss you Woody.!!
-
me and the michigan wonder boy are there.
-
Dixiebowmen are suppose to have a trad shoot that day. But. I guess I'll have to miss it just to spend some time with one fine lady....that is until she decides to be unsocial and run off by herself.
-
Looking forward to it! never hunted with anyone else. I have seen quite a few "skwerls" (you americans talk funny :jumper: ) there, and the weather should be chilly, which I here is good for them.
I don't have radio but will meet at dawn.
Adam
-
Adam, I have an extra handheld you can borrow if you like?
-
That would be awesome, thanks

Some dad Knife River is! How could he raise kids who would rather do cake and ice cream with lots of other kids instead of traipsing about in the cold with a bunch of old farts on a skwerl quest?
America is in big trouble with that kind of parenting going on! :scared:
Killdeer
-
ummmm....some of us don't remember the despression ma'am :p :saywhat: :jumper:

Keep talking, nc recurveman. It'd be worth missing my boy's birthday party to watch a first-rate switchin'. :biglaugh:
-
Knife river I was in the same spot last year, Promised my little girl I'd take her to see barney live. The only date we could get was during one of my bass tournaments....promise is a promise to barney we go. the day before a CLOSE freind called me his boat broke down pre-fishing. I told him come get the boat by the way tearing them up at this spot on this lure......he won. don't worry I'm built to take a good whippin. :biglaugh:
-
Stringcutter, I was gonna make a peach pie, but Cleve might accidentally get a bite of it, so I won't. Sorry. :jumper:
Killdeer
-
Killy you go head and make dat there pie. I'll make sure he don't get even a smell of it. Caurse I hear Cleve don't like Cherry or blueberry???? You sweet, young princess. :notworthy:
-
Dang! The mere mention of pie turns you into the most sugar-lipped lisping liar north of Hades!
Tell me more... :D
I will stop by a 7-11 and buy out their stock of Hostess pastries. :p
Killdeer

Any animal would be blessed to have you cast your shapely shadow upon them at the moment of their passing. The angels, wood sprites, and song birds all cry their whispers of love and yerning at the mere thought of your gracing the presents of their humble wood... The raven takes flight and makes speed to announce your arrival. O, Great and Wise woman of the woods, please grace us with your presences and baked goods at our hunt.
-
if this keeps up I'm gonna have to wearing my chest waders. :scared:

And a snorkel!
Tommy waxes way poetical for a dude who can't spell! I guess it's a matter of inspiration.

ms. killy, is there anything me and my partner can bring? You seem to have been elected head of catering. drink whatever.
-
A man is truly blessed by God..whos' wife can cook and bake... Sadly to say it's taken me 2 wives to figure this out.The next one will be a pastery chef.
-
Not to brag tom I taught my wife to cook. when we first got together she could screw up cream of wheat and all you do to that is add water!!!

"You seem to have been elected head of catering."
I was not nominated. I did not campaign. Nobody has donated to the Party. There was no election. If nominated I will not run. If elected, I will not serve. :readit:
Donations to the Party are strictly voluntary. I believe Tom said something about his delicious homemade venison jerky. I mentioned a hypothetical pie. (Try to find THAT filling in a can!)
Our lodgings are nebulous, and so far I think we have three camp stoves among us. The weather will have a lot to do with where I sleep. I am very comfortable with seat-of-the-pants navigation and spur of the moment decisions. If there is a treat that somebody is particularly fond of, here is an opportunity to share it! I will bring more pie than I can (comfortably) eat, a couple of small pots and maybe a frying pan. I will have enough food and coffee for Clark and me, and a little extra. If we need anything, I think the Sheetz sells everything except moonshine, but maybe Tommy knows more about Sheetz than I do. I may bring down some year-old venison for over the fire.
Killdeer :campfire:
-
Sheetz doesn't have Moonshine, but I do! :bigsmyl:
It's for medicinal purposes as needed.
-
Can ya send some over? I fell pretty good at the range today and bucked both knees on the concrete.
I hate when that happens! :banghead:
Killdeer~off to get another ice pack. :(
-
I will also bring some chow, and a small stove. I just got a campfire grill which I am dying to try out. Plus I may be able to scrounge up some beverages.
Adam

Don't get caught drinkin at the WMA.
-
Deer Park and coffee?
-
Went to where we are goin hunting yesterday. Lots and Lots of white and red oaks. Found lots of cuttings too. Didn't see any Squirrels, but I was there from 1000am-200pm so that might have had something to do with it. Bring your flu-flus if'n ya got 'em.

Hey do I need a achery stamp as well as the non-res. license?

No archery license needed. Your choice of firearm is not dictated for small game. Just as you don't need an archery license to use a bow during firearms season, only for archery season.
-
Looking forward to meeting up with new and old friends on Sat. Jerky is in the dehydrator as I type, should be a good batch.
-
What time are people showing up?
Adam
-
We meet at 0-dark:30, at the Welcome sign near the Bass Pond, on the 20th. Unless you plan on arriving on Friday and camping there.
Handheld radio channel #7
See attached map.
I'm pretty sure this what we all agreed on, isn't it?
I'm going to bring my video camera to record our hunt so I can post it on Trad Gang for others to see.

-
Yep, that's the spot. If'n you walk down past the bass pond on foot... At the head of Squirrel trail is a camp site. Or you can just camp near the boat ramp where we park. Just make sure you're 100yrds. from the boat ramp... In addition Unless we have a permit( which we Don't) there can only be 3 tents together.... So you might want to spread out the tents alittle so nothing is said to us. :readit: :campfire: :archer:
-
This is starting to look good!
Well, all except the possibility of being filmed...talk about being caught in the act! :scared: I may have to actually behave myself. Ewww. :p
So, Clutter, you ran by the squirrel woods? Did ya use a shotgun or a twenny-2?
Killdeer :jumper:

Killy, Walked around with my new girlfriend. A Robertson Vision Falcon 1.. All Bacote with bambo core 50@28. Boy she's just sexy!!!.....Jealous yet?? And, she's quiet too. Unlike most women.... You'll get to meet her.
Now, all I have to do is find an arrow/point combo for her and we're set for a nice long honeymoon. Really the best recurve I've ever had hands down.
-
Hey old man, with your aches and pains, you know this will have to be a short fling! When your bod "hollers 'nuff", maybe she'll take a turn with me.
Killdeer :bigsmyl:
How long is your draw? I will bring some 2016s.
-
I bare shaft tested her yesterday . A 29 inch 1916 bare arrow shaft with a 200 gr. point, at 5 yards was making a 2 inch tear to the right. I think she'll shot fine with 1916's cut to 28 inches with a 175gr point. And give me around 10 grains per lb. .... I'm drawing 27 inches and about 47lbs.
-
I'm going to try to be there by dawn if it ain't raining. It's a 2 1/2 hour shot according to mapquest so I may be a tad red-eyed. If it's raining I'm staying home. Working on my flu-flu's. Got some hex points in the mail Friday and I'm going to try stripping some turkey feathers.
Is someone making name tags with our "handle" and avatar? I won't know anyone without them. LOL
-
You won't have any trouble knowing me and Kathy. ..... She'll be the one carrin pies under her arms ... I'll be the good looking fat guy fallowin her around. :D
-
I'll be the guy with the "now how the hell do I get home from here" look on my face.
-
and with the smoked deer ham!
-
Any river cane near there? I'd like to collect some materials for cane arrows. I know some great places further east with head high cane but not sure about that area.
-
Better bring out the long johns, 70 last weekend and low 40's this one. Looking forward to this get together. Jerky is just fair, but will bring some anyway.Chris and I will be there early Sat. morn. Be careful on the road!
-
Yup, it'll be a little nippy in the morning. :campfire: :clapper:

My MI freind just back-out non res license was to rich for his blood, fear not you will still be treated company of a carolina gentleman   :saywhat: :biglaugh:
-
I just packed up my plethora of arrows and three bows. Do I need to bring more bows? My husband just told me that he is not interested in camping in the blustery cold that he heard about. I guess I will be suffering the rigors of a motel room.
Anybody know of one close to the squirrel woods?
I will still bring my small stove and stuff.
I have not located any firewood either, except for the overpriced junk at the grocery store. :scared:
Killdeer
-
Do a search in Midlothian VA. There should be some wood around, I will bring a hatchet and saw. See you all around 630A. It's going to to be "fresh" so bundle up warm.
Adam
-
NC, remind your friend that now the license will be good for one year from purchase so he will be able to hunt this season and next in VA. May be just enough incentive to get him to bite.
I've got 30 acres of firewood I had thinned this past spring, I just won't be home before dark to be able to cut any of it. I have some chestnut already cut that I'll bring.
-
Killy, you've got a plethora of arrows? You keep them in your quiverarrium? Have fun doing the archerification thing and keep an eye peeled for the hyperboles -- I hear they're bad this year! :D :wavey:
-
That's what I like about Killy. I can only understand half of what she says. Which means I only get half the inssaults too??? The rest just flies on away....unnoticed by me....Ignorance is bliss some times.....
-
I'm with you, Splutter. Why should we worry about hyperboles? They's just real big treetrunks, right? Now, a hypervole , I'd worry about THAT rat!
Killdeer :biglaugh:

Cerial bowl,Cinnoman roll what???? You's makin me hungry.... Just made some nutter/flu-flus to night fur the hunt. .... But I found a watchmaycallit at Home Depote for the tip instead of a nutt. Nice use of the language, Spatter. Are you saying that the squirrel will need to change its drawers?
Killdeer
-
Ooops??? Had to read my own post to figure out what ya was talkin bout. Anybody coming up today??? Might go up for a few hours after my chores is done round here if'n you are.

Hoping to stop by the VDGIF also while we are in the neighborhood.

Killy, I'm kinda-maybe-sorta on your way down... If those pies take up too much room in your truck you could drop off one or two here... Joe would happily share a big slice of his birthday cake. :wavey:
-
I made a couple of flu-flus last night. I'm experimenting with the different designs. I made a 3-fletch 5" full feather but that one still went about 100 yards. I made one of the twist type and those are a pain to make and it doesn't look like it will provide enough air brakes. I also made a 5-fletch 5" full feather but haven't tested it yet. Going to try to whip up a few more tonight before I turn in early.
Are there picnic shelters there? or is anyone bringing a folding table for setting up the goodies on and cooking? I'm leaving my truck at home so I can't bring one. But I've got a load of firewood in my trunk, and a small limb of "yeller" wood in case anyone was interested in it. I'm going to be bringing some smoked salmon and some homemade deer jerky.
-
Woody, I wish Birthday Joe were going with me! I bought a bigger truck just so I could fit bigger pies in it...I even have room for a little boy about what..nine years old? If he wants to "bole", we can accommodate him. If he wants to bowl , then we can find some round rocks and stand up some kindling for him.
:banghead: SPLURTER!!! READ WHAT I WRITE!! :banghead:

Lotta help YOU are.

Looking forward to meeting you, Chuck. If you bring your truck, it comes with a built-in table at the back...
I have a small folding table that I can bring. It is VERY small. And of course, my truck has a built-in table at the back. :bigsmyl:
And thanks for the wood!

Hope this helps. It's the best I could find. Ain't many places near there and even fewer that takes dogs. I couldn't find any....?????? Unless you pretend it's your seein eyeball dog... Caurse you can't let 'em see ya drive up...But If'n they see the dog doin it ... you're in like flin.
-
Well? So how did it go?
I hope everyone made it home safe and hope you had a great time while you were there. Any squirrels in the bag? Any pictures to show and stories to tell?
I was a lurker on this thread because I knew I couldn't go, but now I'm at home watchin' the ice fall and wait for the good word....
-
I was hoping that, since everybody went home yesterday, (except Clark and me) that the stories and pics would be up here already. Do I have to start everything? Do I have to outline the story line and post all the pics? I KNOW that there were far more pics taken by others, (AND VIDEO Mr. Bingle,) but NOOooooooo. Everybody waits for ol' Killdeer to do it all. Shall I begin with the shot I got of SlingClutter fetching something from the ground...the one I shot from the rear? Now THAT'S a frame-filler! :scared:
Killdeer
-
I know I asked for it but that might be too much to start with....don't punish me just because I wasn't there.
Any left-over pie?...and when did you move out of Possum Squat? Tell Throckmorton Hello for me.....
-
made it home alright last night, pulled in at 8:30. Really enjoyed meeting everyone, had a ball stumping w/ big ron,uk, va bowbender, talon dale and string cutter. Big ron and va bowbender are tuff to shoot with them boys will make you feel bad fast!! loved watching uk's flu-flu's as I am easly amused. I think everyone had a great time I Know I did! thanks to all for the food and fun!
-
Oh thanks, Cleve! What am I, chopped liver?
Yup, Forester, there is about 1 pie's worth of leftovers. People seemed to prefer the Pokeberry Pie over the others. :bigsmyl:

Well, I only managed 1 picture in all of the excitement and it was shortly after sunrise.
I had a one hell of a good time in spite of the COLD and WIND. I never saw a squirrel but heard a few when a redtailed hawk made his presence known. I don't think he got a squirrel either :readit: :saywhat:
Killdeer provided the desert and them pies were Top Shelf. It was hard to get a slice with StringCutter in the way but we all managed fair.LOL
I'll second what Cleve said about Rob ( VaBowbender ) being a damn good shot. It was my pleasure to meet everyone :knothead:
There should be some pretty good pics from the rest that went. Hope to see em soon.
-
Now I know why I was feeling so paranoid The whole time I was there..... It was IllBeer watchin my backside all day.Well for your personal bedside photo I hope you got my good cheek.
I ate so good I couldn't hunt in the afternoon. Had 2 differant kinds of Salmon, cheese, crackers,About 3 lbs of the best deer steak I've ever had in my life. 3 differant kinds of Deer Jerky and 4 slices of killy's pies to finish it off. All I could do was set in the truck and listen to my old friend Johnny Cash.
Didn't hunt much but sure ate good.
-
I'll get some video posted as soon as I get it edited. Most of what I got on tape was the food feasting and target practice. I should have taken the video camera into the woods for the stump shooting, that's where all the laughs were. Next time I'll remember it.
:banghead:
I'm here to tell y'all I never had that much fun shooting before...ever. All y'all are GREAT people and I can't wait to get together again.
:clapper:
-
What can I say, great day! those stumps did not stand a chance. I don't know why Cleve is whining about looking bad he hit 2 stumps over 40 yrds! By the way Ron can cook! Possibly the best Deer I have eaten (Pies weren't bad either)
Adam
-
LOL I was hoping someone would mention those AWESOME shots Cleve made on them FAR out stumps :readit: ... And he cooks a mean Brat.
Chucks ( Talondale) Salmon was REAL good too. Hell... Everything was Good, Except for me getting called back to work. LOL
-
boys face facts god has a soft spot for the shooter with no ranging skills...... you can qoute the sky boy on that one.the 2 reasons I hit them was devine intervention and the fact that it was all but impossible to shoot over them. :knothead: . Adam please send me video of the flu's I love those things, I've giggled like a school girl all day.
-
Enjoyed meeting up with people, even if only for a short time. Maybe next time hris, Connor and I won't take the long way around the perimeter.
Killy, enjoyed meeting the ghost(Clark) and liked the sundowners with Adam as well.
Hope to meet up again at ATAR or maybe a hoghunt or something again.

Okay, simmer down. I'm working on the pictures now. I waited until I got into work so I had high speed connection and nothing else to do (just kidding boss really!)
I had a great time. It was my first time stumping and I was dutifully humbled, but enjoyed myself immensely! BTW, I did have one of them big red fox squirrels playing behind my house yesterday despite snow and freezing rain. Go figure.
To start off I left my house around 4:00 AM and drove east with 20 MPH winds and near 30 F temps. I arrived at the designated spot almost exactly at 6:30 AM. There was only one truck there. I was beginning to think I had the wrong time and place when VA Bowbender came over to introduce himself. We talked for awhile waiting for dawn and the other shooters. UK Bowman showed up next and for some reason noone had a problem figuring out who he was once he opened his mouth. (He tried to tell us it was a Kentucky accent) Soon NC recurveman, String Cutter, and BigRonHuntAlot show up. We decide to warm up, figuratively and literally. We put on a few extra layers of clothes and pull out a couple of block targets.
-
Here we are in the early morning chill.
VA Bowbender shoots with authority.

-
yall didnt kill anything? AGAIN?!
gee whiz...looks like ill have to come next year and break the curse :archer:
-
We then split up in groups of three and went looking for squirrels. Signs of squirrel were everywhere, nests and cuttings, but after a short while in the woods, and only some ghostly sightings, it became evident that the squirrels weren't coming out to play. The area is well managed and has some good habitat for game but either high pressure or cold weather had all game in hiding. BigRonHuntAlot, VA bowbender, and I walked along a wooded road that had lespadeza and dried forbes along the edge trying to kick up some rabbits but only found a plethora (stole that one from killdeer) of water bottles that we cleaned up by shooting them all the way back to the parking lot. The other group had the same amount of luck. We noticed that Killdeer, Clark, and Spirit, had showed up while we were out, but they were still persuing game. What we didn't know was that Tom, Chris, and Conner were out playing in marsh mud as well. We wasted no time in setting up a make-shift kitchen in the back of VA Bowbender's truck. Everyone pulled out one delicacy or another. Ron made the BEST batter fried cubed venison I'd ever tasted. It literally melted in the mouth. UK made some bangers and a spot of tea. ;) There was jerky, smoked venison, smoked salmon, cheese, crackers, and venison bologna.
-
Just as we were finishing up Killdeer, Clark, and Spirit emerged from the woods. This was timely because Killdeer had brought three pies and we were ready for dessert. I never got the opportunity to photo either shooting, they always seemed in motion (especially Spirit). There were a few morsels of cubed venison left to share, but all were gone when Tom, et al emerged from their trip in the marsh. We decided to work off some calories by shooting some more arrows.

UK Bowman
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/Talondale/Archery/Squirrel%20Hunt/UKBowman.jpg)
After shooting for awhile the wind died down some so we decided to take another go at it. String Cutter begged off saying he had some deep meditating he needed to do. So VA, NC, UK, BigRon, and I headed for the woods, pushing a brushy field for rabbits on the way. Nothing was kicked up and we decided the most abundant game available were stumps so we persued them with great zeal.
Here's BigRon threading his orange flu flu through two trees. (notice arrow in flight)
-
I also caught UK's arrow in flight but that was a little easier because as he said, his longbow "puts the arch in archery". LOL.

-
BigRon and VA Bowbender definitely schooled us but the long shots went to NC recurveman.

thanks talondale, didn't realize you did so much camera work in the woods

I hope your wife doesn't watch this with your imitation of her.
Can you break this down into segments later?
-
Thanks for the pics Chuck.
-
Chuck, those are great pics! (And getting the shots without folks realizing that you are getting the shots is one of the marks of a good photographer!) If you don't mind, I would sure appreciate having an emailed copy of your large-file original of the group. Could I trade you something for it?
I had such a good time there with everybody! Clark and I went to the Bob Evans at 6, and ate as much as we could hold. Then came the trek to the WMA, some 28 miles away. When we got there, all we found were trucks and cars. I set about perusing the county stickers to see if I could guess the owners. Tom and Chris Bohl and Chris' son Conner arrived, and we talked a bit before setting out in search of the scurrilous squirrels.
The Bohls headed off one way, and Clark and I went down across the dam and up the Nature Trail. We figured two things;
1) All the REAL hunters would have gone up the Squirrel Ridge Trail and
2) Animals on the Nature Trail would be less wary than the animals on the trail that hunters took. :D
And it was TRUE!! Not only were the animals on this trail more relaxed, they were sound asleep, snug in their holes in the boles! And when we went onto the Squirrel Ridge Trail, I ran into ncbowman and UK Archer. What gave me great pause in my trail-choosing theory, was what tipped me off to their presence in the first place. While I had thought that perhaps somebody was perpetrating some outrage upon the nether parts of some beleaguered mule, the braying that had aroused my concern was actually originating from the "guide" that these two unfortunates had engaged. I snuck closer to ascertain the exact nature of the poor equine's dilemma, and was both relieved and nauseated to find that I was actually tracking the obstreperous outpourings of our renowned SpringFlutter.
I hurled (almost :p ) the expected invective his way and we thumbed our noses as greeting.
We walked a bit up the trail, and shot a clump of grass to a bloody pulp. Walking on, we found a VERY squirrelly place, where more stump shooting broke out.
Forgive me my naiveté, but I still believed in my chances of finding game. My poor husband is even less worldly than I, and so, with our gallant dreams of mighty conquest and the fattening of our friends with the bounty that we would harvest from the Powhatan Pignuts, Clark with his horsebow and I with my K-Mag wended our way away from the pleasant company and Tommy, and off toward adventure in the hardwoods.
Oh, it's past my bedtime.
Killdeer :archer:
-
Killie, PM me your email and I'll send you both group shots.
-
Will someone please help me with the missing names?
-
I believe the two missing are Chris and Connor. I may be wrong. I think Connor is the short muddy one. :)
-
Right as always, Chuck. Conner is Chris' son. Or maybe Connor is Chris' son. Maybe Chris can help me with the spelling. I don't spel two gud.
Killdeer
-
Chris is the taller of the ? marks and the squirt to his right is Connor, his 10 year old son. I'm the one with the white fuzz on the chin. Enjoyed meeting everyone and had a good time stumpin'.
We pught to quit deluding ourselves and just call it a Virginia Stump shoot instead of a squirrel hunt. Maybe then we might see some game, just like when you go deer hunting!
-
Well, we can do this again in June. This will be the first year there will be a June season. We talked about it a little bit. String Cutter said something about getting rooms at the local motel. I think camping is much better idea.
:bigsmyl: :campfire:
All in favor say: AYE
Maybe themonkey can make it this time.
June 2-23, 2007 (Only on specific wildlife management areas listed below):
Amelia, Big Survey, Briery Creek, Chickahominy, Dick Cross, Dismal Swamp, Fairystone (including Fairystone State Park and Philpott Reservoir), Goshen, Havens, Hog Island (Carlisle Tract only), Horsepen, James River, Pettigrew, Phelps, Powhatan , Thompson, Turkeycock Mountain, and White Oak Mountain Wildlife Management Areas.
Fox squirrels may only be harvested on Big Survey, Goshen, Havens, Phelps and Thompson Wildlife Management Areas.
Hunting squirrels with dogs is not allowed during the June season.
-
sorry vabowbender, wont be able to make june either, a week after i graduate ill be on a plane heading out west to b bar ranch to herd cattle before i start college in the fall
-
AYE on this end :bigsmyl:
-
I think themonkey is a figment of someone's...no, a fixture of someone's immaturation. :knothead: If I ever saw him, I would prolly beg a shrink to remove the hallucination.
Thompson is close to where I live. It is about 45 minutes west of DC. (hint, hint)
Killdeer :archer:
-
Dismal swamp! we could get every trad ganger on this site a lifetime supply of cottonmouth skins for projects! we could shoot the mosquitos with the flu-flu, broadheads only as some of them would only anger at a judo hit. nah I'll be doing the offshore thing june I think the boat's booked all summer.
-
Aye! I will come-a-stumpin'
We could try somewhere up in the mountains this time as it would be a tad cooler in June.
Adam
-
nope killdeer...unfortunatly i am real, ask tom! hes got visual evidence on his camera from 3d shoots!
-
Let me know what's decided, Would be interested.
-
And yes, the Monkey is not a figure of my imagination. He does exist!
-
I am not sure that my Thermacell can handle the Dismal Swamp in June, I do have some 100% Deet though
-
Goshen would be close to me. Definitely cooler here in June. The Maury is right next to it so some trout fishing could be done too. Don't know how well they'll bite in June but it's possible.
-
Well, If'n we do it in Powhatan...... about 5 miles down the road is Bear Creek state Park. It will have Brand New Ain't nobody been slept in cabins for rent. Some will house up to 8 folks and maybe a dog or too on the lake.
Or we could just camp out at Powhatan?
If'n we do it in the mountains I believe we'll have fewer folks show up. Cause of such the longer drive from the east. Powhatan seems to be about center of the state. But,I'll Come no matter where it's at just ta eat some more like that. Might even have some kinda car pool if'n we do it in the mountains??
-
No fancy cabins at Goshen but Lexington is only 15 minutes down the road if you want to have comfortable accomodations. Besides you can shoot fox squirrels there. Don't mind me though I'm still uncommitted at this point. I'm just trying to give some info. I've turkey hunted Goshen and can give some input if wanted.
-
I hunt Powhatan all the time so I would like to try somewhere different. Mountains are cool for us Flatlanders, fewer bugs also.
Adam
-
It doesn't matter to me where we go. Have bow, will travel!
-
Keep in mind-snakes in the hills if its warm, just watch out on the rocks and deadfalls. I might be able to use a friends cabin in Alleghany, west of Goshen near Longdale Furnace. It sleeps eight comfortably and room to camp outdoors. All the coveniences of home except for the privy. Definitely would like to see what the flatlanders think of the hills around here.
