Title: Hog Hunting Time!
Post by: Irish on February 14, 2007, 11:59:00 AM
Getting on the big metal bird tomorrow morning, heading south and east to hunt hogs with Ray Hammond and Tippit.  It's got to be warmer than here, and I am ready to chase a few piggies-  maybe even shoot a couple!   Hoping Doc (Tippit) gets out with the weather in the north east, but it is looking like he will be OK.

Going to have other guy join us, Terry something or other. I think his last name is Green. Anyone ever hear of him? Wonder if he knows anything about hog hunting?  :D

I think a good time will be had by all, and I am reallllllly looking forward to the hunt!

Yessir, the pigs are gonna be wadded up like a covey of quail in the early morning...if we get into them it will be a wild ride- snouts, elbows, feet, and black balls of furry fun scatterin' in all directions, and arrows sailin through the air, hopefully making a couple of em squeal!!!

Can you squeal like a pig, boy???

Brian, got a light weight set of loaner limbs I am going to shoot off one of my recurve risers.  I dropped way down in weight and am able to shoot it righthanded.   It will be enough with heavy arrows, and Ray has told me we will be close, real close!!

Ray,  Don't give me that too cold and too windy!  I hunted Ossabaw Island this weekend and was into pigs everyday, morning and evening.  Even had some luck on my first Trad piggie - check out thread and photos on the TBG page:
 http://tradgang.com//noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=34;t=000279

Might have been a touch warmer, but a lot windier on the coast.  If a rookie like me fresh off knee surgery can do it, I think youse guys were just too busy eating!  Bet you had fun anyhow. Steve

Just got unpacked, back to Cold New England from Cold South Carolina!  How cold was it?  Well when I left on thursday morning from Logan Airport in Boston, they had to de-ice the plane.  Then they had to use 2 different tractors to try and push it out from the gate.  When that didn't work...they De-Iced the plane from the tarmac.  It was frozen solid to the ground!

So my trip to the warm south & hog huntin' had a very Cold Start!  Little did I know that that wasn't going to be the end of it...Doc

There was Sleepy, Doc, Grumpy, Dopey, Bashful, Happy - never did see Sneezy......not one of group weighed more than 60 lbs, and I chased those 6 pigs around for 3 days.  Finally got a shot at I think Grumpy.  18 yards, give or take, and just as I released.......lets just say Grumpy was not where I thought he was.....little buggers move quick!    :banghead:

"Cosmic" Ray & I must have walked 10 miles the first day pushing the hardwoods, pines, blackberry brambles, etc.  Saw plenty of sign but no hogs.  We all corned the water along side the roads to try to bring them out.  The next morning all the water was frozen over.  Seems like pigs don't like to break ice to feed  :)

The second night Ray & Terry set me up on a feeder.  Ray said there would be 9 small pigs coming to it as soon as it went off.  With in five minutes of it going off, a line of 9 pigs came trotting in.  I'd set up off the feeder in the tree line 30 yards from the feeder & 15 yards from the feeding circle.  Hunkered in my niffty seat all ready, I watched them all feed under it & on the far side.  That lasted 5 minutes and then they were gone.  The feeder was tilted away from me spreading corn to the other side.  They never came to my side and 30 yards on 20-60# pigs was more then I was ready to shoot.  I re-set the feeder and spread some corn near me hoping they'd come back.  About 1/2 hour before dark the conga line of 9 returned to feed under the feeder again.  Then 3 more little pigs joined in.  They still didn't come to my side.  The wind was right and they weren't spooked.  I watched as they started leaving again...first the gang of 9, then down to 3-2-and finally one little pig under the feeder.  I had paced off the distance to 30 yards so just before low light I took a shot.  The arrow flight looked good but the pig ran off unharmed.  Not having pig hunted before I sure had some learning to do, but Ray & Terry sure helped me break it all down.  I had a great weekend...good old & new friends.  Certainly more good food than the pigs eat  :)

Mel, it was great to be huntin' with you again.  Ray & Terry, thanks for showing a rookie pig hunter a few tricks for the next time....Doc

Hey, Terry/Mel/Jeff

Should we tell ole Vance about the fire-grilled pork chops an inch and a half thick topped with blackberry ketchup????

Or the inch and a half thick buffalo burgers with Dales Sauce on em, grilled to perfection, served on sourdough rolls with all the fixin's?

Or how about that peppercorn crusted New York Strip steak we had, with the loaded stuffed baked potatoes?
