Title: Lets see your 2006 in Review.
Post by: Al Kidner on January 10, 2007, 08:04:00 PM
Hi all here on the Gang.

Well I was just sitting back the other day thinking about the year that was 2006. I hunted more than I thought I would, made more arrows than I planned to do and worked to much away from home than I expected.

I have already made plans on hunting New Zealand for 10 days in March and maybe a Desert camel hunt with my mate Ben later on in the year if we can both swing the time off.

Lets see what you did in 2006, be it making your first bow, splicing up some feathers, learning to foot arrows or your first Traditional animal on the ground.

Here's a few from my year...

Did some Broadhead collecting....

Had some knives rehandled for me and my Son...

Did some Chital hunting...

Made some arrows for a close friend that was in need..

And hosted some fine Gentleman from Montana...

I could post more but I'd thought I let others show there 2006.

looks like youve been busy Aussie!! This was my first year hunting trad. So 06 brought lots of first for me. First deer with trad, first bobcat, first squirrel with trad, first cottontail with trad, first jackrabbit with trad, first hog with trad (and bamboo arra), and my first duck with trad. Wow it was a great year when you put it like that. lol.
Heres a few pics.

Al, are those the broadheads you intend to whack through a camel?...I think we need to talk about broadheads and penetration! No, seriously, they look very interesting. What's the story with them?

For me, 2006 was the year I got my first kills with longbows, and busted my jinx on feral goats and pigs.

Cheers, Ben

PS - Looking at that chital stag gives me an urge to meander over that way and have a go! What a magnificent animal!

Kyle looks like you had an awesome year.  I'm gonna give trad archery a go this year.  I'm very intersted in the particulars on your bobcat and duck harvests.  Is there a story about them somewhere I could find using the search function?

Thanks,
Brian

I've got to say, I don't think I've ever had a season with so many firsts. I suppose it started with an evening of bowfishing in South Texas with Cutis Kellar and Charlie Lamb. In a few hours I connected on my first shad, spotted gar and mullet (not the Billy Ray Cyrus type).

At some point during the night I spotted a head out of the water to my right and swung toward it, starting to draw. That's when I noticed it was a gator swimming next to the boat...my first live gator sighting. A little while later Curtis decided I needed a closer look at one. After a few photos we released the gator unharmed.

That night we'd gone out to find alligator gar, which were being extremely elusive. So we decided to burn the next evening hog hunting by moonlight. At about a quarter after eleven I took my first wild hog, which we recovered the next morning.

Of course, we took some time out for a little stump shooting around Curtis' property. The snakes were kind enough to stay the heck away from us too. Then again, maybe they just knew Charlie had a bow in his hand and decided to play it safe.

A couple months later, good friend and hunting partner Dave Shumway and I headed to Canada to hunt moose and whatever else was in season. He'd been up there several times before, but this was my first trip to Northwest Ontario. What a beautiful area. I could have spend the entire two weeks just looking through the viewfinder of my camera, but there were animals to get after.

A couple days into the hunt I connected on my first ruffed grouse....

...which was followed up by my first spruce grouse.

It didn't take too long before I came across my first bear and wolf tracks.

About a week into the hunt I had my first up close encounter with a pair of bear cubs. My guide and I were standing on a minnow trapper's trail when the little fuzzballs came busting through the bush right up to us. No pictures though. We didn't know where the sow was and figured it best to get out of the area before she decided to introduce herself.

Maybe a week and a half into the hunt a bull I'd passed up a marginal shot on 5 days earlier offered his broadside chest at ten yards. I sent my arrow through both his lungs. 89 yards later I walked up and hung my tag on my first bull moose.

Ted Peters, my guide, is holding his homemade call...a steel bean can with a shoestring in the bottom. Watching him use that can to bring the bull in was something I'll never forget.

Over the next few months I managed to put some venison in the freezer and even made a few attempts at goose hunting with a bow. I never so much as drew on one of those birds, but I'm definately making plans to add that to my list of firsts for the next season. If nothing else, it'll sure be fun trying.

Great thread, and I love looking at fellow bowhunters pictures.  Here's a little taste of my 2006 season.
I had a great time in Idaho last spring.  I arrow my first color phase bear.

I went goat hunting with my father in law.  It was a blast.

Did my first solo sheep hunt.  Had some knee problems and had to bag out early.  I arrowed this bull by my camp though.

Chased moose all over Alaska.

For 2007, I'm going on my Kodiak brown bear hunt in April, and I hope to get my knee worked on this summer.

Unfortunately I didn't have the oppertunity to make a traditional kill this year. However I did get to spend some quality time in the woods with my friends and my family.  I got to know more members here which is a blessing in itself, and increased my knowledge of archery through the generous offering of knowledge by all who participate on this site.

Although there were no kills, I celebrated a new life this year.

I can only pray that 2007 will be just as good or better for my family, and yours as well.

This is a great idea for a thread!!! I am enjoying all these posts, hopefully they keep coming.
My 2006 started out with my 1st turkey with my recurve. Stalked up on a group of Toms fighting, got within 60yds and voice called them in to 10 yds for the shot!!!
My next 1st in 2006 invloved drawing a SD archery elk tag. I was lucky enough to get to hunt for 20 days and finally took my 1st bull elk with my recurve!!!

In December I made a bow trade with Wango from this site. The Hoyt Gamemaster I traded for came on my birthday. I took the bow out that day and shot a juicy little spike who had screwed up my hunt the week before.

I also shot 2 other deer with my Robertson in 2006 but do not have pics of those deer --- all in all a very good year!!!
2007 seems to be starting out with a lot of promise. Here is a picture of the 1st arrow I shot at game in 2007. The deer is now in my freezer!

Thanks to those who have posted already. Hopefully this thread will get a lot more posts!!!   Dan

WOW! Holy cow guys, you all had a great year! I'm really impressed with all your trophies and great photography work! 2006 was good to me as well. I started shooting Trad last March so it was hard for me to kill a turkey in April with it but I tried and never got a shot. Oh well, the summer months were great though. I won several 3-D shoots and really got pretty accurate with my equipment.
I even got my girlfriend, Molly into it...

When October came around I was really busy with Football and couldn't make it out enough to get shots at anything close. My team ended up going to the State Quarterfinals though so it wasn't all bad, plus I was the captain of the defense at linebacker so that was good. Finally after weeks of not connecting on anything the archery God's shined down and I was fortunate enough to arrow this nice buck. The story is in an old forum titled "What a Buck!" It was the greatest day of my life!

I also took a shot at my first Racoon and connected!

Man what a year. Although I didn't harvest a lot, I had a blast while I was doing it. I can't wait to try and get a gobbler with my bow this spring. A special thanks goes out to the guys who helped me get started and giving me the Traditional Archery sickness, I feel great! Thank you all for sharing your stories with me and being such a class act of guys. Your stories and pictures inspire me. Good luck in 2007! -Nate

October 7...another Mo doe

I drew an Iowa bowtag, spent the 2nd and 4th weeks of Oct up there, saw tons of deer, but no shots. Went back up Thanksgiving weekend, and got this ole broken antlered bruiser!!! Nov 25, Iowa buck!!!

I had a good year for 2006.  In May I went to Idaho and took my second blonde phase black bear, small female but I guess I am a sucker for blondes.  I had a dandy elk hunt in September and tagged a good 6x6 bull.  I hunted Iowa for whitetails in November.  I helped a good friend of mine get his first archery whitetail buck and tagged a decent 10 point buck of my own.  No way to post pictures from here at work but pics are here on previous threads.

2007 will be busy for me this year as well.  I have put down my deposit for a tresspass fee to a 35,000 acre Wyoming ranch for an August antelope hunt.  Come September I have a couple of elk hunting trips planned to the Weminuche in Colorado and hopefully to the Thorofare in Wyoming if everything works out.  I have been working my horses 2-3 times a week getting them and me in shape already.  Of course I plan on spending a couple weeks hunting whitetails in Iowa and also North Missouri if I get lucky and fill my Iowa tags.  I would surely like to squeeze in a bear, hog or exotic hunt this spring with some you but I have other committments and have much to do to get ready for my pack trips this year.  Maybe next year I will be better prepared.

Into october and my first trad buck with my 43# Crooked Stic longbow, Butter.

And then in late october this doe with my 1 piece Crooked Stic LB.

And capped off my year with this Christmas bow, another Crooked Stic, for my wife who litterally flipped over it.

Took 3 shots with 3 different bow and arrow set-ups and took home 3 deer. Missed several squirrels though  :knothead:

St Judes Paradise Deer/Hog hunt.  I was so busy with these guys that I didn't take any pics.  This was the most 'woulda shoulda coulda' and 'if I'd only done this, or if I'd only done that' hunt I've ever been on.  Soooo many close calls for everyone there with over 90 deer seen.  Rob DiStefano, Charlie Lamb, Joe Coots, Bob Walker, Woody Blackwell and I.....and special appearances by Danny Williams and Matt Schuster.  This was a real treasure of a hunt....Charlie and I are going to offer this hunt again this year.

And to finish off the year, I got these two on my birthday.....

I had a great season taking three doe. I had a few encounters with good bucks but couldn't connect. The biggest acheivment was watching my 10 yr old daughter take her first deer ever with a bow. She was using a compound shot instinctivly. She hit the doe's heart at 20 yds.!!!

There's a lot of tough acts to follow here. But here i go. This was my first trad year, i bought a used long bow in august. I started shooting like crazy every day but still figured i would wait till the next season to hunt with it. I joined Trad Gang and began to pick up a lot of good info from the people here. I soon began to shoot better and gain confidence in my equipment, somewhere along the way my ten year old son became really interested in hunting and using trad gear. We went stump shooting together had a blast with that. I felt confident enough to hunt big and small game with my longbow, so i hung up the compound and took to the woods. I had the most exciting bow season in over 20 years i had some misses and lost some animals that part makes me angry with myself. But i did end up with three deer and for the first time had some close encounters on the ground, i thought that would be the coolest way to get a deer. Maybe next season it will happen for me. I ended up selling my martin and buying a Howard Hill bow i cut back on the poundage a little and seem to shoot that bow better, i liked it so much i ordered a spare of the same poundage 48# @28". Here are a few photos of my traditional journey of 2006.   (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y275/420W/IM000347-1.jpg)   (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y275/420W/IM000346.jpg)   (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y275/420W/IM000217.jpg)   (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y275/420W/IM000230.jpg)   (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y275/420W/IM000212.jpg)

Geez, not much killin here. Had a great year and many memories made. Several Sambar hunts but no meat on the table. a Few pig hunts and did finally put some meat on the table in Oct.

Then went on my annual Texas hunt in Nov and Dec. Hunted hard, did not have any shots at whitetail. Had a huge Axis at 12 yards and he was gone before I could finish my draw, stalked some rams and had a sika doe jump up in my face, course from the noise of me falling over backwards and the sika barking the rams took off. But I did get my Bison.

Had an interesting year........

...and getting ready to ENJOY the fruits of the labor.....

Found some leftovers from previous hunters......

Saddest part of the year......my wife's adopted father and a hunting partner of mine always told us that when he died he wanted to be reborn as a blade of grass high in the San Jaun Range so that he might provide nourishment for a bull elk and live the most free and pure life possible.  Well, he passed unexpectedly and we honored him be giving him his wish.  Next spring his ashes will feed the elk.  We spread them on a BEAUTIFUL bench above a tarn at about 13,300 ft this August.

Our tent near his resting place.......wish we could all be so lucky to spend eternity in a place like this.

One of the points I make done did a good job!

Some of the boys that hang out here......the big 8 pt with the drop tine got raod killed.....he grossed 180" as an eight.....BIG EIGHT.  I took this pic in early Sept....there were nine bucks in the field that night that were 130 or better.

My bow buck the day before shotgun season......cool drop tine and big body.

I know this is a trad bow forum, but shotgun hunting is a way of life for lots of folks here.....I had never done it before and one of my best friends from college asked if I wanted to try it out........I did.......and I learned more about why I love bowhunting in one weekend than in 15 years of bowhunting only!

Made all me own hunting gear, rivercane arrows, cattail quiver, arm guard, string silencers, 3 finger shooting glove, osage selfbow and flemish string, string keeper, trade points and some flint heads were sent to me by Knife River for my hunts.

Some osage logs found and cut,,, and a new lab puppy
 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/Osagetree/Timmysosage.jpg)

My first shot on a deer using a flint tipped arrow was a good hit but due to a freak hail storm and high winds I managed to loose the trail and did not recover the deer.

Then a couple easy misses,,, this happens now and then.....

Well...my year was simply blessed...

I started off with a hunt to BC for moose and Mt. Goats.  Since this is a trad bowhunting forum and that was a rifle hunt, I won't post the pics, but I was very lucky to take both animals.
In September, the Trad hunting began in earnest and some of the pics are posted below.  All in all, I managed to arrow five whitetails with five different stickbows.

Here is Rover Gal Hope with her Ky doe.

Late season doe with a Morrison Cougar Longbow.

Full Moon Buck with Horne Ridge Runner TD.

If 2007 is half this good, I'll be tickled pink!

Guys,

Please remember that this is a trad bowhunting forum.  The only time we allow off topic weapons, fishing, etc is during the St Judes Auction threads, or VERY special threads that have been approved.

Trying to keep the site focused and on course is a lot of work, so please understand and bare with us.

Thanks.

For me 2006 strengthened my conviction to stick with traditional bowhunting. Doesn't feel right anymore to hunt with anything else. Also became a TradGang member and I am learning alot. This a great site and a great bunch of people. Here is a picture of my 2006 buck.

Matt,

Pics or stories or posts of hunting trips other than Traditional bow hunting are not allowed, read the rules. Has been that way from day one. This is a Trad bowhunting site only, the mods have a very difficult job which would be less difficult if we would all follow the rules. No need to get mad.

Not getting mad........but my pic and caption was ABOUT trad bowhunting........the point was that I tried something else, and learned a lot about why our sport is for me and others aren't.

I guess than that my fishing pic should be pulled too.

Matt,

No one was offended, we are not against guns or fishing, its just that we are about trad bowhunting.

If we allow one person to post gun pics, then we have to allow everyone, and the site will get watered down from its main focus.

2006 was a year of travel for me.  What made it special was the time spent with some very good traditional bowhunting friends!

May - Black bear in Saskatchewan

August - Antelope hunting in Colorado

Sep/Oct - Waiting for the float plane after a long Yukon moose hunt

November - Nice buck taken on the third day of vacation

Bagged my first trad animal the 1st 10 minutes of light on opening day this year.A dry 3 or 4 year old doe, delicious and she ran to the road before she died of a double lung hit with a 125 snuffer.Second time out I saw deer, coyotes, turkeys but was only presented by awith a shot at a 50lb button buck.I passed him and hopefully well cross paths in 3 or 4 years. Then I missed 2 turkeys on the ground a few days later, but only by inch or so I might add.I enjoyed it immensely even though I didnt bag them.Although theses 3 hunts were my first trad hunts I dont think I ever enjoyed hunting so much. The gun season didnt feel right to me and I missed having my bow in my hand. This year changed my hunting life for the better Id say.I think I may one day hunt trad only. Not that I have anything against other hunting tools but trad just made me feel more at one with the woods, like I was really welcomed to be there by mother nature and the critters that lived there, it was a weird feeling that I may not be expressing accurately enough for all of you to understand.Another 06 highlight, really the best for me was getting my 6 year old boy into shooting a recurve and loving it.I also got my cousin to buy a recurve and he has never bowhunted before!I think hes hooked.Anyway it was a great , life changing first year with hopefully many to come.

My 06 was great for me too.  I have been into filming while I am out hunting for a few years now.  I got this bad boy on film for 5 or 6 minutes before he got within 5 yards so I could shoot him on camera!  A 1st for me with a buck.  Have a couple doe kills on camera, but this was amazing.  If I could figure out how to pull a still off it I could post a pic on the hoof!

WoW, awesome pictures and stories guys!!
As far as my hunting goes I managed to shoot 8 of these little buggers from 17 to 37 yds.

and then managed to miss 6 nice whitetails all at less than 20! Been telling my friends if I ever see a deer with a squirrel shaped birthmark, it'll be dead meat!!

And I did this with what was by far the biggest highlight for me of last year, my son Dustin's memorial bow,I cannot even begin to tell you what this means to my family and I, it's a gift that allows me to take my son, if just in spirit, hunting again, and it's also a gift that just keeps on giving, the number of friends I have met, and continue to meet, because of this special bow is truly amazing, it has really helped in healing my broken heart, and got me through the most difficult times of my life, and I thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart! Trad Gang is truly a special place just filled to the brim with equally special people, and I'm blessed to be a part of it, it has changed my life and made me a better person,Kudos Terry and Rob,you have made a difference with this site!! and have earned my undying loyalty and respect, as have each of you fellow TradGangers!
                 THANK YOU!!,

2006 was my second with a bow but my first with tad equipment and on my 5th day in the woods, and 3rd shot i connected and made the shot we all hope for as she went down in about 10 seconds in sight. It was also neat cause it was a bow my dad got a deer with in '76
   (http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k5/tkosteczko/tradgang/tim_006.jpg)

Later on in the season i was able to watch a deer for most of the deer befor my dad got him later in the day. First time i ever saw a deer he shot while it was still alive.

Gave bowhunting for geese a try the last two days of the season with no success but i am deffanitly hooked and will hopefully have pics of that for you next year.

Only thing I killed with the bow all fall, but I still had fun. Coolest part was I got him about five min from home, way up in the hills.
