As many of you know,(and for those of you who don't) I work for the Rail Road,at the Poughkeepsie RR station. There was a thread a while back "Lets see your Tomahawks" and there was a picture of a REALLY COOL hawk made by Rick "Skillet" Evans. It was made from A RAILROAD SPIKE!!!!!!! I sent Rick a PM asking him if he would be interested in some brand new never used RR spikes,as we have them laying around all over the place,and that if he wanted them I would send him some. Well,Rick sent me back a PM saying that if I wanted to send him some he would send me a finished tomahawk in return.

I will have some balloons out on the turn from US Rte. 9W and than again when ya get to Old School RD., when ya turn unto that road you will see the South Albany Airport and my Dads place is right in front of it., by the way we do hunt the airport and actually walk down the runway to get to some of our spots. How many of you folks plan on wearing a fleece outer layer for the Bunny Hunt???
Last year we did a ton of walking and my old outashape butt was sweatin' ALOT!!!!!!! Well I posted a thread a while back asking a bunch of questions about fleece and 2 of the most common possitive coments were that it's "Very Breathable" and "Fast Drying". Well if my old butt is gonna be sweatin' buckets,then it sounds to me like fleece is the perfect answer. It was also suggested last year that we all wear something Blaze Orange for safety sake. I just happen to have a Realtree Blaze Orange Camo fleece jacket that I think would cover all the bases. I only have 1 concern... I don't care if the jacket comes home in one piece... I just don't want to get tangled so bad that Shawn has to come back and cut me loose with a chainsaw!!!

Shawn...I'm gearing up for the hunt buddy...I went out yesterday afternoon, one of those spur of the moment deals. Someone had to be smiling at me cause after 5 misses on running bunnies, I managed to arrow 2 rabbits that made the mistake of stopping around 10 yds away. The icing on the cake....a huge Ringneck jumped out from his hiding spot, slowly walked away and as luck would have it, gave me a clear shot. Arrow flew perfect and that ended a great afternoon of hunting. Since my daughter borrowed my new Digital camera, I took a few pics with my 35mm. Photos to be posted at a later date!!! Oh Yeah Shawn!!! Getting Psyched!!!!

Here are some flu flu nutters I made up this week for the Bunny Hunt, shafts are oak dowels from Home Depot, everything else I had laying around the house. Feathers are wild turkey from this years spring bird...I have no idea what they spine but they fly amazingly well from my osage selfbow.

Luke,sounds like ya already have it.We're required to pass that exam and recieve the certificate to get a licence.It's a 1 time deal probably the same thing you have up there.Something to double check on just the same to make sure it's accepted.....come ta think about it I wonder if our tags are proof enuff up there that we took the course,my cert's got lost in a house fire yrs ago but an old licence is proof enuff so it's never been an issue

There are some rooms in Ravena $55 but man they are rough. The Econo and the other Fran mentioned are the best. Man Curt, I'm sorry to hear your news too, but, family does come first, and at least you'll be there for Saturday, and maybe part of Sunday. Funny thing is, my parents 40th wedding anniversay if the 16th, me, my brother and four sisters are planning it now. #1 stipulation on my end was I won't be around on the 18th and 19th, nobody asked why, they all knew!

I can get NEW smooth leather work gloves from work (duh!!!) if anyone is interested. They are made of med.wt. smooth leather and they make pretty good shooting gloves (with a little practice)I used them last year and my hands hardly got cut-up at all. They're also "ambedextrious" (I'm not sure I spelled that right but it's supposed to mean either right or left handed LOL) I'm going to try and get as many pair as I can and either bring or send them up for Sat. If anyone really wants a pair,I'll make sure and put your name on them for you.

Took my LB out down the road Sat and Sonny had the bunnies movin right away.....I only saw the flash of bunnies in the brush and likely wouldn,t have gotten a shot with a cannon let alone my LB LOL.....Sun mornin worked out the same way and we called it quits after standin in the rain for an hr......no bunnies to be had...and the only shots were at a beer can somebody had tossed along the road

Headed out today and kicked up 4 bunnies, took 2 running shots and missed. Just keeping in tune for the big weekend. Still not sure what bow I'm using but I'm leaning towards the Groves. I'm sorry say that Kevin and I will not be able to make both days :( I have tried and tried :banghead: but I just can't get off work. I have to work friday night 10pm - 6am sat. morning. I have tried to think of any possible way to make it happen BUT... There is just no REALISTIC way that I can work all night,then drive up there (I have even thought about having Kevin drive up LOL)and "Bust the Brush" all day without any sleep

I think most of the guys are using bow quivers. (I used one last year and it worked OK) I didn't loose all of my arrows, BUT... I did have my quiver run dry on a couple of pushes LOL. I just like to carry ALOT of arrows!!! Also I have never found a bow quiver that holds more than a dozen arrows!!!!! Bring whatever works for you!!! It's Gonna Be A BLAST!!!!!

I had posted earlier that I have smooth leather work gloves for anyone that wants/needs them. They make pretty good shooting gloves if I must say so myself LOL.They protect your hands AND your good shooting glove won't get all tore up by the thorns.
I have 10 pair right now and can probly get more,If anyone definetly wants a pair let me know and I'll make sure you get a pair.The rest I'm going to send up to Shawn and he can put them on the prize table.

Shawn, Let's talk this weekend bud....
I hunted tonight behind the house this is the 4th time,i've had mutiple shots every time out.And my confidence is rising each time out on running shots.
Took fur off 2 bunny's tonight...one I even knocked of a loop and he ran off....not crazy about nuts on the end of my arrows...I rolled him with a 620 gr. nutter from my 63# KS and he ran off.
Hopefully I'll get out Sunday after the snow stops!!!
If I don't make it to Tollgate........

I also experimented with putting Scorpios on behind regular glue on field points. The smaller springs work fine.

After the hunt is over I will be entering the Maine Moose Lottery, and at that time I have to name my subpermittee and an alternate. One of those two are the only people allowed to hunt with me IF I am fortunate enough to get drawn. What I am going to do, is put everyone's name in a hat and draw names from the participants of the Bunny Hunt to be my subpermittee and alternate. The things you need to know are the potential costs, $477.00 for the moose permit for each of us, and the dates, which would be September 25th-30th, or October 9th-14th. Knowing this now will give you a little leeway in making the decision on whether or not you can make the committment now to participate. (Besides the permit costs, we would split food and lodging, I will take care of transportation.)
For those of you that want in, but are not going to be there Saturday, but will be there Sunday, please email me or pm me with your names and I will make sure you are included in the drawing.
The odds on this hunt aren't great, but if I don't try I won't get it, and I figured this would be a good way to give others a chance to chase moose at minimal costs at the same time.
That's the deal, hope you all want to play!

Looks like I need to pack tonight cause I volonteered to help cut up turkeys @ the conservation club for their gun raffle on Sat. Figured that since I won,t make the raffle the least I could do was help out in the kitchen....

Just a few possible suggestions...
Blaze Orange- It is a big help if everyone wears "some" Blaze Orange (or some other bright color) This is not really so much for "safety purposes" as much as to make it easier for the pushers to stay together and in a straight line. If you haven't been there before (LOL) you have NO idea just how thick this cover really is!!!!!
Leather Gloves- A REAL GOOD IDEA!!!!! Your hands are going to take a REAL beating,I've seen more than 1 pair of "Hamburger Paws" at the end of the day!!!!!!!!!!
Shooting/Safety Glasses- Not a bad idea either!!!!! Last year Curt got a NASTY gash in his eyebrow,if it had been an inch lower... :scared: His eye filled up with blood and he couldn't see,Shawn had to go in after him
Just a few ideas that I thought might be helpful

Best part about this get together is seeing old friends and making new ones, sharing ideas, shooting bows, breaking arrows, getting scratched to heck plowing through briars and still knowing I'm only 70 minutes from home.
I hear they are calling for 60 mph winds late Friday into Sat...should make that 80 yd balloon shot very interesting. Get pumped fellas...only one more day! :cool: :thumbsup:

Man those cottintails are so much smaller than our snowshoe hares. I was kinda put back in my New Jersey home for about 30 seconds. Those pictures bring back some good memories from Michigan also.

I took Sheba to the vet.He thinks it was an allergic reaction,gave her a shot of benadryl.I take her back Monday night to leave her overnight.Gunna get her teeth cleaned and maybe an extraction or two.Bad tartar build up.She'll also have some blood work done.

Mark's bunny thrower was an awesome new addition...a ton of r&d in that one Pal! It was an awesome time, both during and after the hunt...man what a time. Some great hunting under tough conditions...to put it mildly.
It was great seeing some old faces, meeting some new and having an all around good time.

I would have hunted with it all weekend but passed it on after my shot. I hope all that wanted a chance to hunt with it got to. I also want to Thank Curt for the arrow he made and I won in the Raffle. It is now hanging proudly next to Ferret arrow. I wish I had a chance to meet everybody but the weekend flew by ! I also can't remember names (just ask Curt) but Thanks to all. Oh ya Aram your son has the drive to hunt !!! He didn't want to quit. I think we will hear many stories about him in the future. Tom, Sonny and I got home about 10 pm. We made good time until we were almost home and drove into the snow. Now there's no wind and about three inches of snow on the ground what a day to go rabbit hunting !!

As for the hunt, it was cold, it was tough and I am beat, but what a great hunt it was. We were like a bunch of kids when those first rabbits were shot, what with all the hooting and hollering going on. How cool was that? I was right near Tom when he shot that rabbit between the eyes, that was so cool. Not five minutes later, standing in the same spot another rabbit ran the gauntlet, coming so close to Tom and I that we couldn't shoot, he tried to kick it as it went by! Aram's son Ru was amazing. He is simply a hunting machine, never stopping. You can hunt with me anytime Ru, and I am sure a lot of people that watched you feel the same.
I need a break, coffee's done and I need one bad.....got home last night just after ten and prmptly fell asleep on the couch, crawled into bed at 1230 and just got up at 8:45!

Like "Tdog" said earlier,the way Shawn hunts has changed the way some guys think about how they hunted for rabbits.They were just walking,looking for rabbits.This hunt has opened a lot of eyes about how rabbits should be hunted.Don't get me wrong,there's a lot of rabbits....but without us getttin' right in with them,we wouldn't see half of what we see.it's brutal,but it's worth it!!!
This is the future of our sport, Ruo(I think that's how it's spelled),son of "Aram".He was unbelieveable,he hunted,pushed,shot,and busted brush right along side the best of us.He's smart,loves to make his own archery eguipment(his father Aram is a very talanted bowyer),and has a lust for hunting that is unbelievable.He's a throw back to the old days.So few kids,these days have what he has.He was a very deserving recipient of a few gifts.A vest and a hand muff from me,and an unbelieveably nice back quiver from Keith Deters.He's the kind of kid ya just can't do enough for,and he truely deserves and appreciates it.

It was great to see old friends and meet new. You're all a tough bunch and it was my pleasure to hunt beside you all.
The highlight of the weekend for me was a special moment between two great friends that I won't soon forget. Shawn will have to tell that story though, you won't be disappointed.

Let me start with a BIG THANK YOU !! to Shawn and his faimly for hosting this event.What started as 8 of us gettin together has grown into a truely special event that is not only great for all of us but a FUN fundraiser for St Judes..1100 this yr 500 last...thats sweeeeeeet....Thanks to all that donated to this worth while cause.
Bob and I made great time on the way home last night just under 4 hr,s without hitting snow till we got to our neck of the woods.I only managed to get off 1 quick shot at a full bore runnin bunny but had a blast just the same.I'm sure Sonny my beagle had a great time too even though I'll be pickin burrs out of him for several more days.He got bloodied up same as some of the rest of us going thru the #(@#$@$&*@(!@* multi flora rose which there seems to be an over abundance of LOL.
It's actually hard to figure out where to start besides the obvious that I did cause we had such a good time....My legs are whipped my hands cut up even thru leather gloves LOL I'm quite sure I'll be popin burrs for a few days outta me as well as the dog...took a couple outta my face last night and can feel some in my head still...excellent time by all.....
Ru,(sp??)Ya made my weekend the way ya got right in there it's great to see that in a young man these days and if 1 of your shots woulda connected OOOOOOO BOYYYY that would been sweet! Lookin forward to huntin with you again someday ya done real real good.

I'll try to post some pics later. The brutal cold on Sat didn't slow anyone down and the 4 rabbits taken that day was amazing, especially with the winds. I was extremely happy to shoot the LDB since I didn't get drawn to hunt with it. What a piece of history! Thanks 4Nolz...I even missed a rabbit with it...I would have arrowed him but the sun was in my eye, the briars were tugging at my bow arm....nose running...etc...ya get the idea. I just flat out missed!
Dave...that plan you and I worked out on the moose hunt...I'll be calling Lisa tonight and after that, Chuck probably will have to back out!! Also Dave..we have to stop getting caught in all those briars together, did ya notice Jeremy watching from above....rumors could start flying.."Briarback Mountain"...Talk to ya all later!

I can't thank Shawn and his family enough for inviting us all out for a weekend and putting on an AWESOME hunt!!! It was great to see old friends and meet some new guys, finally putting some faces to the names I've been seeing!
The conditions Saturday were brutal, but worth it! I'm still digging thorns out of my hands and arms, those pics still don't show how THICK some of those patches are!!
My boss isn't at work today, so I'm calling it a day to go home and get some much needed rest - I'm beat!

1100.00 dollars for the kids at St. Judes was wonderful.
I had an outstanding time saw more bunnies than I've seen in a long time, even got to shoot at one. On the one drive saw the same bunnie 4 times. Swampbuck's dog Sonny did an out stand job of keeping the rabbits circling.
Can't wait till next year already.

I was telling my forman at work today what a great time we all had at the Bunny Hunt!!!!!
I was trying to explain how we talk to each other almost daily on TradGang,But yet we hardly ever see each other in person. I tried to explain how even though we hardly see each other, that we know so very much about each other. I told him how we have shared our lives with each other over the years. Our experiances,both good and bad,how we have watched each others families grow,and how we have all shared the sorrow of the passing of loved ones (like Shawns Mom) as if they were our own. We all get together every year for "The Bunny Hunt",and we all look forward to January when Shawn starts the "official" Bunny Hunt thread. We all wait for the Bunny Hunt with the excitment of a child waiting for Christmas Morning!!!!! When the time has come,and the Bunny Hunt is here,we all gather together at Shawn's Dads to see our old friends and to meet new ones. It makes no differance if you are a past Bunny Hunter or a "First Timer" you feel right at home,because everyone knows your name. They may not have met you face to face,but they have read your posts and come to think of it,they really already know you. When the arrows have been shot,the Bunnys have been chased,and the hunt is over,there are no "good-byes" for we will "see you again" and "talk to you later" (probly later that night if your not to tired LOL) We will go home and pull out our thorns and nurse our scratches and start thinking about next year. It is a good thing,this "TradGang" and the Bunny Hunt brings us together. We truely are a "Family".

I was positioned in a small funnel just inside the wood line and out of that vicious wind. The drivers were about halfway through and the cries of "Rabbit out front!" echoed. Then "Another to the right!". Peering through the underbrush I caught movement heading my way. Here he comes, full bore, stretched out to the max. He was only ten yds away when I hit anchor, lead him and let the cedar fly. A clean miss, slightly low. As the critter sped on his way you could hear other arrows banging off limbs. When the drive was over, I handed the LDB to Mike Robin(Bamboo), took his longbow and was part of the next drive. We booted out 3 rabbits on that drive, 2 were taken and Bamboo scored with the LDB. I tell ya, all the briars, cuts, bruises you get on a drive is all worth it when you see a couple guys holding up the bunnies. I had my chance with the LDB...maybe next year..I won't be able to post any pics yet, my usb cable sh$$$ the bed!

Sonny and me! we couldn’t get enough. I saw more rabbits in those two days then I see in a year. On the way home I was planning every briar patch and hedgerow in town. Too bad the season is almost over.
I loved the beautiful chase that was laid out in front of me by Sonny on the second day. Sonny went barking through the patch near the green houses when “Swampbuck” spotted and pointed to me a rabbit fifty yards ahead of Sunny. I stayed posted there and after Sonny went by the rabbit doubled back and stopped twenty yards in front of me. I had the LDB and sent an arrow that dropped at fifteen yards in the brush. (I shouldn’t have used a judo, I guess.) That was actually the second shot I took at that same bunny that day. Boy was it fun!!! I hope to be back next year.

I have a story to tell about a shot that I've waited on for three years now.....I've hunted every hour of every bunny hunt since the first one at "Meathooks".Every shot I've ever had was always flat out running or last year I finally got a sitting shot and Bob beat me to the punch.
Well,the first push of day 2 found me setting out watchers and waiting for the drivers. Heard them start and sure enough started hearing shooting on the other end of the line where I put the guys I really wanted to get shots...it worked...they were shooting!!!! I heard my bud David(huntrdfk) counting shots 1.......2 shots
Couple minutes later...I see a bunny hopping right at me at about 30yds....I get ready...it's coming...stops...then continues on toward me....I'm thinking this is it...I'm finally going to kill a rabbit on one of these hunts....as he gets to about 10yds he goes behind a log...I draw...it comes out and stops to look at me as I finish my draw.....I can't believe it,a sitting shot at 9yds....I let go and the arrow goes right between his front legs.....I shot right under it!!! I couldn't believe it!!!!
Then I hear David........"3 shots"
I was hitting everything I shot at sunday too,you'd think I could hit a bunny at 9yds.. :knothead:

Speaking of Shawns future son-in-law Damon, we both shared a spot on one drive and both of us missed a rabbit simultaneously. You should have seen that cottontail haul a.. He ran right past Fran and all we heard was the arrow bouncing through the briars! Damon looked at me and we both wondered aloud "how the heck did we miss him...he was right there!" (maybe 10 yds).

The other drivers were working there way around the back. Curt and I were standing there, maybe 20 yds apart and this rabbit comes hauling out of the thickets right between us in the field. Curt yells "Joe, Rabbit!" and in a split second, the bugger did a 360 between us and raced back into the thickets. I would have loved to know what went through his head when he seen us....So close....

And watching Curt shoot on Sunday, missing that sitting "duck" at 9 yards, then demolishing anything else he shot at the rest of the day...like Shawn says, that's why it's called hunting.

This summer I shot 9 ptarmigan with 9 arrows. The SAME DAY I shot at a HUGE double shovel carabou and clean missed im 2 inches over his back.
Hunting not killing, thats why I love it.

In fact I had such a good time I've already started planning on next year. After the push from Hell on the 2nd day, we were all walking back across a large cow pasture. Most of the guys and Mo were trying some flight shooting, but I noticed a bunch of bleached out cow bones. I picked up so many I needed help putting them in my game pouch of my vest (yes it was empty...No bunnies!). Anyway next year's raffle knife will have a JLMBH authentic bone handle LOL. I also got my touch mark in the the mail yesterday so my blades will look more professional...Jeff

I knew that fiberglass needed to be fixed from being beat up for 10yrs,should have done something about it.If it wasn't for that little "tip" it caught on,it would have been fine,just string it back up and hunt!! Done it before...a couple times!!! We'll see what Jack can do with it,at worse I get a new set of limbs,and Keith gets to mess with these.I got a feeling he can work some of his magic on it :thumbsup:

You oughta' have enough knife handles for the next 20 years! I'll send you an outline on a piece of masonite. That way you can keep it as a permanent pattern.
Gonna hit the yellow pages & look for local farriers.
