It was a nasty day in the North Cascades today, rain, snow, and high winds. Perfect for hunting rutting Blacktail's!
I'd seen a small buck cross an old loggin road ahead of me, so I slipped up into the timber and still hunted for about 100yds without spotting anything. It was really windy in the timber, but I decided to try some rattling anyhow. I clashed them hard and rattled for only 10-15 seconds and picked my bow up off the ground. Within seconds I saw a deer hop a log and coming my direction.
The buck came in and stopped behind a large Doug Fir quartering toward me, then started walking with his nose on the ground like a bird dog. The buck was upslope of me and downwind, so I figured he'd smell me when he got broadside. As I drew my bow the buck paused and began to look at me as I released the arrow.
The arrow covered the 18 yards before he had time to react, and the buck went maybe 40 yards as I watched him stagger and go down.
This is the first critter I've taken with the Blacktail after getting it in 2005. I've missed two bull elk before I realized I needed to break it in on a Blacktail to get the proper karma! :archer:

Awesome Blacktail!!
Congratulations on a beauty!!
Man,when I was stationed out in Washington back in the late 80's I never remember seeing the quality of Blacktail bucks that I have seen coming from the NW recently.I did most of my hunting along the coast and on some of the Islands in NW Washington, and if you tagged a forky you were doing good.
-
Awesome Blacktail buck, no better way to break it in that bow. Now get out there and get those bull elk.

I don't know Blacktails too well but I believe that is HUGE for a blacktail, shoot that's big for a whitetail around here! Congrats.

Awsome Blacktail Buck and Bow.... I should be getting my Elite VL by next fall. Most beautiful bows I've ever laid eyes on. Congrats.... That's one of the nicest blacktail bucks I've seen lately. Good Job of breaking the bow in.. Jeff
-
I'm jealous. I love those blacktail bows. Just wish I could afford one. Oh yeah, beautiful buck.
-
Thanks folks! I was so pumped last night I could hardly sleep.
The bow is a Blacktail Elite VL, Bocote riser and linbs with Cocobolo feet on both the riser and limbs. 60#'s @ 29" Douglas Fir arrow with a Wensel Woodsman doing the dirty work.
When I got home yesterday with my buck I had a dandy of a Blacktail buck in the yard tailgating one of our local girl's. I'll post a pic of him, he's a beauty! The buck's are rutting hard around here right now, I LOVE this time of year. :readit:

Way to go Ron! I was wondering how your hunting was going. Nice way to start your Thanksgiving. Had a couple of opportunities but, fate was not on my side for my first blacktail. Get with me and I'll give you the details. Congrats again....Sarge

TK! TAKE ME HUNTING !!! that's a fantastic animal!
Congrats and good shooting!
I am headed out for a farm land doe tomorrow morning.
-
Wow Ron , great buck , congratulations.
I was thinking of you and the rain this last week , boy has it been coming down . Bucks are rutting hard over on this side as well . I went to my fathers house last Monday and as I pulled into his drive there was a big 4x4 mounted on a doe right in the drive, good to know he is passing the genes.
-
Wow look how dark their horns are. is that typical?
Very nice Tree Killer although I really think you need to change your handle to "dandyblacktailkiller" LOL
Congrats on an awesome hunt  :notworthy:
-
Yep, that is the typical color of blacktail antlers. Blacktails may not be as big as other deer, but to my eye they are the prettiest.
-
Yeah I love the dark antlers of those Blackies! And that buck Of Tree Killer's is a REALLY nice buck by blacktail standards! Anyone who has been-a-huntin'em for any length of time will tell ya that! Way to go on harvesting a real beaut!

The buck's around here usually have dark antlers. Their preferred bush/tree of choice is red willow.
Here's a buck I caught on my trailcam last week. I thought it might be the buck I killed, but the left antler is different. But his antler's are reddish brown. I think the flash and night time wetness make them even more red?

Another season gone...Dang!...LOL
Great buck and it looks like I will have to wait till next year to kill a bigger buck than you... :bigsmyl:
-
KARMA INDEED!!
-
'Nother great buck, Ron.
I've seen more dark horns on bigger bucks than smaller ones. Don't know why that is, but it seems like most of the bigger blacktails I've seen have dark horns and the ones I shoot are all lighter colored...
Stan
-
You know Stan, you might be correct about the older bucks having the dark antlers! Here's a real DARK antlered buck I got the trailcam Tuesday evening right after I killed my buck down the road. I barely got in there this morning, nearly 16 inches of heavy snow on the road! Brought the camera home.

Santiam...I always seem to wait until you bag a buck and then kill one slightly larger, but this year you had the advantage of seeing what I had first, what happened? :D :saywhat:
-
Dang those are all MONSTER blacktails!! The Blackies we have down here in the central and southern California areas are sickly looking compared yours..LOL! They must be ruttin hard, cause those necks are all swollen like they are are on steroids!! man I gotta head out to Oregon and try and get one of those magnificent beasts! man I'm jealous!
Mark
PS... I gotta Blacktail Elite VL that should be here next month...... think that will help some???!!lol
-
Can't hurt... :bigsmyl:
Hey Ron,
I just got back from blacktail country to see how us geezers were doing against the whippersnappers....
They had my buck at 9 points and yours at 7...
