I'd like to change the grip shape on one of my bows. Was thinking of using the raquet style tape that I've heard some use as a grip cover. Maybe adding something under it to get the shape I'm looking for.
Have any of you done this and if so, what worked the best for you. I'm hoping for something that will stay put for a long time.
Build up by laminating layers of leather using thin ca (super glue) shape with file(s) and smooth with sandpaper. Then do your wrap.
I'm doing this right now. I have a new longbow I shoot real well but the grip is thin and feels like it's going to slip out of my hand every time shoot. I sanded the palm area down and built up the sides with wood filler to make the palm wider. I couldn't find the leather tennis wrap I like and I don't care for the fake stuff but I did find 1 mm leather lacing I'm going to wrap the handle in. I've seen older model longbows with this and it looks nice. I'll find out by tonight
I would be very wary of using wood filler. It generally has low adhesive properties and will tend to crumble / come apart over time in this application.
This worked pretty slick for me. On one of my Dwyer longbows, I felt the grip was a little small.
So I purchased some adhesive backed cork shelf liner. Cut the pieces in modified triangular shapes wrapping from back to front to build up the heel. Then built up a small thumb rest. Then I took a rasp to the cork and finally a little sanding.
Then I completed by putting a sure-grip over the whole thing. Not only did it work great, it provided a nice warm cusion without being "mushy"
Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I was just curious...if you build up the grip in a handle, shold you raise your brace height to compensate for the space you've taken up?

I did it with a RER Vortex a buddy let me play with. I just used adhesive back velcro. I just cut peices and stuck it on the bow to raise the thumb rest. Then I put a tennis racket wrap around it and you cant even tell.
I'll try and get pictures today. Stay tuned.
