Title: Should I be using a tab?
Post by: skychief on January 10, 2008, 10:49:00 PM
I have always used a glove and never even tried a tab.   What are the benefits of a tab over a glove?   Thanks, Skychief.

Glove vs tab is one of those things that an archer has to find out for themselves.  Most shooters end up with a decided preference of one over the other, and a few others use both.  After shooting a glove for many years, I switched to a tab a few years ago with no regrets.  I get a nicer release and shoot better with the tab.  I also find it easier to deal with for hunting.  I simply slide the tab on over a wool glove and it shoots just like summer.  It is also very handy to be able to flip the tab around and have my fingers free for doing whatever.  Best advice I can give is to try a couple styles and see what you think.

Thanks.   Any other opinions?

i shoot bare finger, i guess I need the feel of the string to really get the arrow where i want it to go, takes a while to build up the callous but its worth it, plus my shots are quieter than with a tab

I love the release a tab offers, but I switched to a Martin deerskin glove for durability. I love the release of the glove, too.
I guess its a matter of getting a tab and shooting it to see if you like it.

I've only been doing this for a couple years, and I prefer the feel of a glove.  I shoot both just about the same.  Try both and see what you think.  Tabs don't cost that much, and I use the one I have occasionally.

I shoot 3 under and the tab is much easier on my fingers, I get a smoother, cleaner release and I just seem to shoot much better with the tab. I've tried several, but ended up with the cheap cordovan one peice tab 3 rivers sell. Best one so far at about 9 bucks or so, I think.

the thing is, if you're gonna try it, make sure and fool around with it and give it long enough to really see if it's gonna work for you. Some guys try it for two shots and quit. That aint enough time. I tried it for a week, using nothing else, by then I had the different kinks worked out, and realized how much better it helped me shoot. That's when I switched for good.

Get a cordovan tab with a finger separator. That will prevent arrow pinching and is very smooth and durable,it actually gets smoother as you use it.

I have tried tabs and gloves and have found my favorite to be the duraglove by 3rivers.  Tough as can be and the cordura on the finger tips makes for a nice release.

I use a tab, your finger tips are free and the contact with my anchor feels better. I like the feel of a glove because it is usually THICKER, and a more sturdy feel, but that Thickness is what inhibits my shooting.  cant feel my fingers.

I like the glove better personaly. It gives me the feel of the string/arrow more than a tab.

i use a glove. ive tried tabs on a few occasions and for whatever reason the arrow comes of the really 'whippy' and i'll shoot 18" off at 20 yds.

I've shot several gloves in the past.  A couple of years ago, I switched to the cordovan tab w/spacer from Three Rivers.  I got a cleaner release with a tab.  I've never seen an Olympic shooter use a glove and there's probably good reason for it.

All of that being said, I lost 2 tabs within 3 weeks this fall while hunting..fortunately at the end of season.  I ordered a Cavalier Elite tab.  It was just too big / bulky for me.  I returned it and called Three Rivers to discuss options.  Everybody has their opinions but it was suggested that I might try the Three Rivers Duraglove.  Although I really didn't want to shoot a glove, I decided to give it a try.

I must say that I've been quite impressed with this glove.  I've got good string feel and the string slips off of that cordura very easily / quickly / silently.  We'll see how it holds up.  In the meantime, I'm quite satisfied w/ my Duraglove.

Hope this helps.

If you get a Cavalier Elite tab you can trim it with to fit your fingers. I switched to this tab after shooting with a glove and I saw instant improvement in the quality of my string release. I think the Cavalier Elite is the best and most durable tab out there.

I have both. My favorite glove is a Black Widow with the finger overlays. My favorite tab is a cordovan from 2fletch. I use the tab all the time now. You may have to trim the end to get a little cleaner release.
