Title: Neck knife Sheath
Post by: Dirty Bill on January 08, 2008, 07:23:00 PM
Hey Gang,After seeing all the cool knives in the neck knife thread,I decided I had to have one.

Instead of buying a new knife,I decided to use a knife I already had. It a drop point blade,3" long, with an overall length of 7".

The only thing I had to do was to make a sheath for it. I wanted it to be comfortable,so I used a type of leather known as a blacksmith side. I had enough on hand left from another project,so that was a plus.

The leather is about 1/16" thick and very soft. To keep it from being too soft, and for safety I used a piece of vegetable tanned leather, the thickness about 1/8",commonly used for holster and knife sheaths.

This added was used for the welt, and stiffened the sheath just right, and also prevents the blade from cutting through the stitches on the edge of the sheath.

Taking the black smith side,I measured it by using the knife itself as a guide.

Ok,now that you have the leather, you need to layout your pattern.I did it by drawing around the knife.

Now is the time to decide if the sheath will be for right hand or left hand. This one is left hand. And you all thought this would be easy.          :)

Actually you just fold it for either left or right.

Keep in mind to leave plenty of room for sewing the edge. The excess will be trimmed off later.

The black part of the welt needs to be trimmed. To determine how much you need to trim, you need to fold the sheath over with the welt and the knife in place and line up the edges of the sheath.

Pull it tight,as the sheath will stretch out as it breaks in. Mark the excess with black magic marker.

Now trim off the excess. Once the excess is trimmed, you can glue the welt in place. Be sure all the edges line up correctly, and make sure there is no gap in the end of the sheath between the welt and back edge of the sheath.

Sorry for the blurry photo, but you can see the end is solid.

This is the end of Part one. I'll do some more tomorrow.

Thank you for your support..    :campfire:
