I'm a minimulist(sp) sort of...
I don't like to carry alot of stuff, but, I would like to start carrying my SLR with me on the hunt.
I would like a pack of some sort that allows me to quickly and quitly (sp) pull out my camera and snap off a couple of quick shots.
So A back pack is really out of the question.
By what means do you carry your equipment?

I usually carry mine, but it is rather big and bulky -- I haven't discovered a convenient means of carrying it. Usually it is in my back pack or one of the cargo pockets on my coat. We operate under a system of points restrictions in Arkansas so I only take it out if the buck is not legal, therefore I am not as concerned with the possibility that I may spook it.

My DSLR's are usually buried in my pack in waterproof bags (this bein' Orygun and all). I'm seriously thinking of a small compact digicam with a 6x to 12x optical zoom that would fit in a small belt pouch where it is handy to get to quickly. I'm leaning toward the Panasonic Lumix 5mp with 6x zoom and image stabilization because it takes AA batteries and has a very slim profile, but the Lumix with the 12x zoom is REALLY tempting. They both have Leica optics, the 12x zoom model has a proprietary battery that must be recharged. That's fine when I'm out photographing, but on a several day hunting trip...I deal with that now with the 20D by carrying another battery, so maybe it isn't as big an issue as it seems. Just gotta make sure the battery charger and voltage inverter are in the truck.
The problem with the compact digicams is "noise" at ISO's higher than 200. That makes the smaller 6x zoom model more attractive because I don't need the higher ISO's for a faster shutter speed at the long end of the zoom.
As you can see, there are pro's & cons to both and I'm having a heckuva time figuring out which one to buy! Then you throw the Pentax Optio waterproof model in the mix...
Besides, the 20D and 17-40mm isn't a light combo to pack around with all my survival stuff, food, and water!!

Check out M-Rock bags. I have one for play and I bought one for our work camera.

Jerry,
try the Lumix with the 12X zoom. The image stabilization feature is great. I have 3 batteries for mine (found extras for $12 ea), they are very light weight power supplies plus you can get a simple low cost solar charger for them as well as car system adapters.

I have the lumix too DMC FZ 30, and I love mine. There are some drawback with noise but that usually only occurs when shooting low light without a flash.
Non-Typical, where did you find $12 batteries?

Go to eBay and type in "CGA-S002". I just found one rated at 1300 mAh for $9.95. The one's I bought are 800 mAh. Not sure if the FZ 30 takes the same size. Always check shipping charges before buying. A number of sellers make up the diff. by charging huge shipping and handling fees.
Also, the FZ5 has almost silent when taking pics.
