Just curious about Sams black bear article...is that a grizzly in the tree. Sure looks like it to me, but I'm no expert by anymeans on bears....
That's what I thought too Dan.
Last I heard, grizz don't climb trees (thank god). Prolly a color phase blacky. Good article though.
Dan-HOWDY! Long time no talk, hope things are going well in the Great White North.
I wondered the same thing. I thought that BIG grizz couldn't climb because of the weight and the claw shape compared to blackies....smaller grizz, dunno. The one in the tree wouldn't be a very big one.
Funny thing, I was just talking to a buddy this weekend and we wondered what happened to Sam. I kind of miss his stories about going out in the high desert with a bow and a couple of arrows and living on gophers and pine squirrels...guess he's still kicking. Goes to show that pineys aren't poison after all!

Well. I think that one did (climb a tree). Sure looks like a small one. Look at that limb crotch right in the center, is that its paw draped across it and are those ..like..4" claws ? I can't see like I used to, maybe I am seeing things.

I do beleive it is a griz as well. Dished face, proper color, big paws and claws, ears a bit further off.... yup, I'd say it is.

The outfitter I hunted with in Alaska was taking a client into a bear stand this fall when they startled a Brown bear near the trail. The bear scrambled thirty feet up a big cotton wood in a matter or seconds. Granted it wasn't a ten foot bear but it was as big as a lot of full grown grizzlies.
I guess the dogsled brings Danny's TBM to him was faster than the Kayak bringing mine to me.....and still I wait.....
I stand corrected, I need to revisit that picture when I get home for a closer look. Tim
Can someone tell me; What's the difference between Grizzlies & Brown bears? I know blackies are a different animal, but I can't tell the difference between the other two!
Rob,
Brown bears are just coastal grizzlys. Brown bears are bigger because of all the food they get.

It looks like a young grizzly or brown to me. But one thing I've learned from bear experts across the years is that the more than know about bears, the less likely they are to make a "sure" call, as most or all have been fooled. But I'm no expert and I say young griz or brown. However, that looks like a ponderosa pine to me, and I don't think they grow in any griz country I know of. In any event, it could be a griz pic they took on a trip somewhere and simply submitted with the article, as TMB, like most magazines, encourage writers to provide pics with words, and pay more when you do. Anyone know Sam to ask? Ironically, this thread runs not far below "Help ID this Bear," which I thot would be "Is this a griz or a blackie or whut?" when in fact it is a Bear bow. Cool coincidence for an evening's TradGang entertainment.
Dave,
Right on about the ponderosa. Good call. However, there are (like I know there are in Colorado) rumors of random grizzlys here in Idaho, not far from ponderosa stands.... but I'll bet a buck it isn't a griz up a ponderosa in Idaho..... but my money still says griz.
