Title: C-Biskit is buildin a bow...(now finished)
Post by: Madpigslayer on January 02, 2005, 04:59:00 PM
This is my Godson, Christopher Harrison...most of you know him.

THis is him penciling out his stave...

It took him all of 20 minutes to chase the ring on the back. I figured that was a sign from God that he was doing what he should be doing. (   :)   )

Here is with the thing cut out...

Now, since we are going for a tiny sinew backed pony bow style, we decided to divert our attention to pounding sinews.

5 buffalo sinews outta do it...Thanks to our buddy Doug Campbell...we have some Montana (hands over your hearts) Buffalo sinew laying around.

now we gotta shred em...lots of work. I dont think he realized how much. I think I will tell him to do a couple extras while he is at it. He is young and all. haha.

We still have to heat bend in a little R/D ala Jim Ham when we get the chance.

We are going for a bendy handled semi r/d sinew/snake backed osage pony bow.

short, thin, cool bow.

should make a nice lttle bow. This guy has more talent in his little finger than I have in my whole body. I reckon he will do fine.   :D

We will hope to do a bit more next sunday.

so Chris has the belly reduced, cut in some pin nocks. This is gonna be a neat little bow.

Mickey, he doesnt like beer. I suspect he wont need much help tillering.

Tim, yup, that is right. the head seems to have a nice shape to it, isnt too hard on the sinews.

Lee, I dont need to ask permission anymore. Although, it is a pain in the butt to clean up all the time.  :)

Calvin,
I've been married 3 times, and raised my own  daughter , drank beer and ran power tools, built my house from scratch. But I've never pounded sinew in the living room. So sir I honestly have to proclaim you my "hero".

BTW my daughter is 32 and has 3 wonderful children, hope you are blessed with the same.

on with the bow.

there is the C-man (I already worked all the jokes there with that name, dont bother.   "[tunglaff]"  ) sorting out all his differant sized sinews into piles...this is all after we used a lye bath and a toothing plane to get the back ready.

Here is an idea of the reflex we BBQ'd into the stave...

Here is the CDog looking over our handiwork...

...and a close up of the "pussy mess" we are left with.

Home boy is into this project for about 15 hours at this point.

between you and me, this is gonna be a snappy little bow.

BTW, he casually brings out a bag from his pocket, it contains a perfect "shed" from his pet python that will fit the bow PERFECT. Being that the shed skin is translucent, we will dye the sinew with whatever pattern home boy decieds on, then put the backing on. then after we shoot it in real good (this is where the "I aint right part kicks in") we we glue on the BELLY SIDE OF THE SHED SKIN too.

neat idea, huh!!!  :)

Bow looks cool.  Sinew is magic.

Well Calvin.......I'll start by..." Looks like someone getting ready for the tax deadline"!

" Still referring to Hamm"?

" The balloon is the only remnant of the the New years eve bow"?

" Are those some of Barbies raw shafts"?

Yada,yada, yada!   "[tunglaff]"

Looks like you guys did a great job. WIll be watching intently!

FYI.I tried the "snake skin shed" backing just a week ago.I layed it down on a piece of raw osage. It dried almost translucent! Dying it might help a bit.You might want to do a test run first.

John, feel free to pay my bills brother.  :)

NG, we built all day on sunday. Going to start going back soon, havent been since Christmas. It will be SWEET to go back out.

I like the Jim Hamm book. I think I like the old Indian style bows most of all.

As for the balloon, you should know that they dont last more than a day or two. Ms. Thing (Hailey) loves balloons, and green is her favorite color.   :p

AZ, 3-4. we got a nice sinew crown right down the middle. These are a lot of work, but I like doing them.

John, you are a good Dad. Did any of yours get skared of boogers? Ms. Trad Archer Herownself (Hailey) hates boogers. Runs around screaming "BOOGER" whenever one might be in her general area. It's funny in a disturbing kind of way.   "[laffsmyl]"

well now, I knew the thing was gonna have some "pepper" but it is OFF THE BLOCKS!!!! We are like, 2.5 inches of reflex now, I am starting to think that we might have uhhhh....overdid it a bit?!!!LOL! strangely, it looks to be just about dry?!!!

anybody know how much reflex would be TOO much???
Title: Re: C-Biskit is buildin a bow...(now finished)
Post by: Timo on February 02, 2005, 09:38:00 PM
Ask Marc!

You know, there is always a trade off out there. The dry air up there, might play havic with your wood, but it is the tops for drying sinew! Eh?
Title: Re: C-Biskit is buildin a bow...(now finished)
Post by: Madpigslayer on February 02, 2005, 10:46:00 PM
Tim, One of the reasons I think I have had so much success with sinew is that the hide glue ADDS moisture to the wood. wierd, huh.

I think Marc's humidity is a lot higher than mine here, too. Completely differant from the east coast.

I have always thought that hickory would be dynamite up here for the same reason. perhaps, sinew backed hickory, LOL.

...honestly, this little bow is gonna be a screamer. I am pretty sure Chris is gonna get a bow out of this one, we will see how he handles the ride!!!  I wish MY first bow would have been so cool!!! (didnt know how to get hedge back then...haha)

On the ride home from work each day... I sit and think about which threads I want/need to check when I get home. "Let's see... we got the build-a-longs [C-Biskit's bow, the Deflex/Reflex bow and its repair." I was on the edge of my seat hoping it didn't go, "POP!" a second time. "Then I gotta check all TradAmerica threads, all repair threads... new bows... the Trading Blanket... O.L. not responding to an e-mail."  Believe it or not... I kept checking that one until he responded. Then had to laugh when he apologized for not being able to read and respond to all 10,811 e-mails...lol Dang, this is the best site in the world.

"Houston... we have a problem..."

Not sure about anyone else... but I'm about ready for another pic... just so I can sleep easy.    :)

Cal...Dano's correct. My nephew is getting married on the only weekend of the year that matters. When we were told the date, I can't even begin to tell you what it felt like. Let's just say that if the wedding were called off, you'd hear whoopin' & hollerin' from my vicinity. I'm sure the youthful bow-builders could have had a tremendous time and maybe even managed to stay out of trouble.  :)

c-biskit...you're doing a great job and keep having fun. I know your teacher's a fun guy to be around! Hackboy/leglifter/John was carefully scraping around some knots on a pretty little piece of 'sage tonight.

Hackbow, this is where I was gonna try and be funny about divorce rates, etc...but thought better of it.  :)

sure hope you guys can come, I have a feeling that is will be the best Mojam YET!!!

C-Dawg is currently in the basement stalking his tiller. Boy has patience in all the right places. Bow has ridden the tiller tree a half dozen times at this point...pulling 50#@ about 7 inches of long string travel. He wants to make his own string too...that should happen in about an hour I reckon. I just happened to have an unfletched self nocked rivercane arrow in the bin that he had helped me build a year or two ago, that will get the chore of shooting in the bow.

we are both getting excited about the possibility of him getting this thing tillered today.

...even though the sinew is only 7 days old...there is no problem with it. it is as dry as any sinew I have ever seen!!!! I cant find my moisture meter since the move yet, so dont really know what the humidity is...I do know is bloody nose kind of dry.

more to come.

7 day old sinew?   :scared:   Id be scared to tiller for at least a few more weeks. I just finished sinewing a bow a few minutes ago. The glue on my hands probably wont even cure for another few weeks.

Looking good on the bow! Tiller away. CK

CK, ya gotta trust me brother. It is DRY here. after my first few failures I quit listening to people in the souhtern states about moisture control. I had to! haha. The one I made last year I left for 11 days before I tillered, and I am absolutly sure I would have been fine at a week.

Home boy is well into tillering now, just learned how to make a string, we got that one on there.

we're at the short string!

BTW, we have 8 inches to go, so we might be able to swing it.

Second pic left limb stif from grip out nearly to mid limb...stiff tips.
Right limb...looks stiff from mid limb out...

pretty much where I ended up Spark. We spent so much time with things stiff...and strung trying to figure this one out that we stand net reflex at almost zero directly after unstringing. and that is with 6 inches to go yet. Guess I still have a lot to learn. Chris is currently loosening up the tips and midlimbs abit...we are starting to get scared.

this thing will be at the very limits of sinew I think. At full draw she will be bent over like a noodle. A 28" draw will be EXACTLY half the length of this little bow.

...start the betting pool...the coach is starting to feel like he would rather be skiing.   :scared:

Hey Cal...Ya got a heat gun to flip tha tips a bit...shouldn't hurt the sinew to much if ya keep the heat on da belly...might be worth a last ditch effort. Might protect the sinew with foil er sumpin.

She's got a nice bend, but still seems a bit flat right out of the handle(right side) in the last pic.You get that working, and then looks like the tips are next.

You got her going on girl!

Looks like every bit of that piece of wood got used.  I was biten my nails at whether or not you were gonna get 28 or not.  I believe he's gonna have him a bow after all.
Title: Re: C-Biskit is buildin a bow...(now finished)
Post by: Madpigslayer on February 07, 2005, 12:39:00 AM
I still AM biting my nails about it! LOL. at any rate, I think that we have both agreed that we need to sneak up on that last inch...therefore, we will get it by a combination of sanding in the wood for the finish...and shooting her in.

I have never been as patient on any of my own bows as we have for this one...add 10 hours today of Chris' time...he is into this for 25 hours now. We need to be carefull, and truly, STALK that tiller.

probably another 8-10 hours I would think between carefully shooting her in...finessing the finish...and finishing her I would think?

I offered to give him the piece of beaver tail I got off of Ralph Renfro at Mojam last year if he wanted to use it for a grip...he said yes. (I wanted that tail for myself!!!) And I think it will be a good addition to the bow. I guess we will have to use real beaver balls too.  :)

Oh yeah, before I forget...directly after unstringing it follows by a half inch. So we only gave up a half inch of set for the last 5 inches we took...I dunno...but I am pleased with that when I see how hard that wood is working???

I really cant believe that thing is holding together. Sinew must be magic or something.    ;)

I should apologize...that background is just plain distracting. Since my mother is coming to visit me for a few days in a week or two (wants to go over my options for window "treatments"  :scared:  ) I 'spose I will have to paint.  :)  all good things must end. eh?!!
Title: Re: C-Biskit is buildin a bow...(now finished)

Sounds like a good plan to me...

About that wall.  Ifn' she don't like it... I guess you could just knock out a few blocks... and stick her behind it.

Best to use the same sinew when ya block it back up. That's what I would do.

Can't imagine why we're single...   :)

Can't wait until next weekend... is that when Chris will be back over to finish?  Gonna be a hard wait, fer sure. Definitely looking forward to that bow's competed state.

Izzat boy serious about naming it after a girlie?  Poor kid!  LOL Almost like getting her name tattood on yer back. Bad mojo when it goes south... Gonna hate to see that one go to the wood chipper. Say it aint so...   :D

Welp.... guess you get another star on yer forehead for this weeks efforts.  :)  Way to go, bud! Both-o-yinz!

frank, we might have to wait 2 weeks...he told me on the way home that he has stuff to do next weekend...that was one of the reasons he worked so hard. we will see. I am betting this thing will get under his skin?!!!

I also told him that as soon as we get him some arrows to shoot out of this thing, we gotts stop building for awhile. I just plain miss shooting!!! (we used to go to the outdoor range every sunday!) but that does seem to be the process...build or shoot. at least building gives me time to heal. LOL.

I am a newbie myself, but it is still taking me months and months to be able to even get him to the stage of making his first string!!! I think tiller is jsut fine.  I'd leave it just as it is.  She'll gain some reflex back as the sinew cures.  I'd keep her in the driest area in your house.  I also wouldn't put a finish on it for a month or two.

Sinew gained back 1" reflex overnight...stands with 1/2" of reflex now.

When I check my e-mail and I don't find any messages pertaining to this thread... Chris, I usually just lay on the finish in multiple coats sanding lightly between coats.
Title: Re: C-Biskit is buildin a bow...(now finished)
Post by: Madpigslayer on February 16, 2005, 07:28:00 PM
we want to make like a kingsnake sort of thingie. should we lay on bands of rit dye/alcohol, or would fiebreings leather black dye be better? The leather dye works just the berries on arras. Should we lay on the dye then proceed to finish (prolly high gloss varathane) or should we do a coat of varathane, then dye, then varathane?

perhaps we should all join hands and sing "kum-by-ya" mebbe whilts lighting candles oh my brothers. (and sisters...no not your herb)

:help:  little help here...I have a perfectly good 15 year old to keep amused.  :)

alright...The C-Dawg went home last night after spending a couple more days working on his bow. He finished it. Got about 10 thin hand rubbed in coats of gloss varathane, then sprayed a couple on top of that. He came up with the idea for the handle wrap himself.

What do you think?

He was a little choked that he would have to wait days for the clear coat to set up...LOL.

He made up his own version of a "ferret floppy" it has both sides 'sewn' and then it 'sewn' onto the leather. adjustable. kids got talent.

we decided that we would skip the snake skin. we both really like the way it turned out, and really like the look of the sinew back. Next time he is over, we will post a picture of the bow at draw. He has already started to straighten out some river cane for it.

Coincidentally, the Farm owner (pig farm) I used to work for called on the weekend, said they had layed out lots of bales as "blinds" for us, and had been hauling out the dead pigs down there (way down in the back 40...deep draw) for us. Did I mention I like him?!!!!! Chris should get a shot on a coyote just as soon as we can make it down there.

I guess it really WAS a good idea leaving my old boss a recurve, stringer, arrows and armguard hey!!!! I think I got HIM too!!! haha.

Once you back your next bow with it it will mean that she is always with you when your out  in the wilds chasing the mighty stag in order to provide for your family. Kathy, I got lost again there - are you buying a new, used car, or Chris's new bow .... or the pig .... or the squirrell ... or what? Oh well, doesn't matter. Darned nice looking bow Chris made there - looks like he had some good "home tutelege" along the way there, Cal, along with some good natural ingenuity thrown in on his own. Can you imagine how many fine bows he could build now by the time he reaches your age ... or my age? Staggering!

well...she is about an 1 1/4" wide at the handle and approx. 1/2" thick. that is including the sinew. This bow would not have worked without the sinew.

sinew is magic.  :)

Thanks pigslayer. The bow I'm trying to make work is a 50 in. piece of hickory. Its going to be a kids bow. I'm not worried about high poundage. I it is currently 1 inch at the handle.
