Got an extra set in the first photo, sorry.
Anyone got a pic of red cedar lam bows ??
those look cool :0)
Kenny,
Please make sure to show us the finished product, those limbs look cool!
Heres a shot of the hickory I'm gonna put in the riser, should I stain it or leave it alone? Maybe I'll put some finish on a test piece of both woods........
might make some killer lookin veneers, can I waste it on a riser??? :help:
Nice!I wouldn't dye it. Those contrasting colors looks good to me.
Hickory is never wasted , no matter how it's used!
And besides, it's for the BOSS!
Kenny stain it. You could go with a real dark red and it would lighten up as you know. I cannot wait to see it! Shawn
Should be pretty...I look forward to seeing the finished bow.
I`m with Shawn on this one. Stain red, then sand real hard to take the stain off the hard grain and leave it in the soft parts. That should give it some contrast. Bob
I really like the look of those cedar lams Kenny! Looking forward to the finished product! Cheers, Matt
She's gonna love it!
Kenny, that's gonna look great. Be sure to show us the finished bow. Maybe even a tease or two as you build it wouldn't hurt! Mike
I thought about the stain and sand plan, still thinkin....
Have to do some test pieces when it warms up to at least 11 degrees! LOL
Changed up on the riser wood, went to ash with a walnut and maple lam in it. gonna glue up the limbs after dark, today and tomorrow are my last 2 days to bowhunt,so I can't miss that!! ;)

Sweet looking bow so far.
Awesome! Those colors are gonna look great together!
Sounds Great!!! I can't wait to see the finished bow.
Bill
Got a brand new plan, wife went to KC with me today to look at lam wood. She comes carryin this over and says "you can make me a bow out of this for my birthday!"
So,new plan, all purpleheart bow with some kind of dark flare in the riser.?? At least I hadn't had time to get the other one glued up!
Hi Kenny,
I just finished a new R/D bow with purple heart and osage. This is just to give you an idea of the riser.
I'll post more pictures soon.

I sooo envy you guys that can make your own bows. Based on what I've seen in the past, I'm sure whatever you decide on is gonna look great.
Arnold, that is NICE!! Showed Renee the pic and she says thats just what she wants except with zebra in the saddle. Thanks for posting that.
Mark, its not as hard as ya think, even a caveman(me) can do it!! :archer:
OK,update.Things change as we go along!! Glued up the riser this AM(Caught up on lam orders!)
Then we ground the lams for it,no pic of the red elm core, but here are the purpleheart lams!!
One end....
And the other...
I think they're gonna look OK!
Gotta get back to the shop!! :wavey:
Kenny, lams look great. Where in KC do you go shopping for lam wood? I plan on getting supplies for my first bow from Binghams but I will probably start looking locally after I gain a little more confidence in the building process. Just curious on where you shop for wood in KC. I'm thinking of heading to Paxton's and Schutte's.
Bill
Hey Bill,
Went to Schuttes this time,be prepared for some sticker shock!! Exotic woods are high! If I can help ya out with some lams, let me know, you can look at em in the sponsors classifieds.
Thanks ,Kenny
That will be nice, and they are American woods to boot!
Well Dan,uummmm, had to use zebrawood instead of osage. Still workin on gettin some of that!!
Did the next step on the riser tonite, gonna glue her up in the AM.Put a couple .060" maple strips in a couple different radius.
Here we go,ready to glue er up,got my lam ends beveled and superglued together....
Heres a lil trick I've started usin, couple holes drilled where the sight window goes, corresponding holes in the form, toothpicks hold everything lengthwise and helps keep that slippery riser under control
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/100_1356.jpg)
Gotta wait till she cooks now.
:D :wavey:
hey tell your wife she cant use the name barney for her bow its all ready taken. i have a bow with purple heart limbs and rosewood and purple heart riser ill have to send you a pic when im back from my buisness trip good luck on the bow
Looking good Kenny! Maybe someday you can teach me. PLEASE?Please? Are you going to the banquet on the 2nd?
Hey Celtic,I hadn't thought of the purple dino, don't think she liked im anyway. More like Deep Purple, actually that Smoke on the water song was playin while I glued!
Tripper, probably won't make the banquet. If you wanna make one, come on up! Heck, you could ride up with Eric!!
Gettin closer, still gotta sand a bunch and spray it. Came out 62",25@ 28",she says that feels about right to start off,and I can cut it down to 60" if need be. Heres a few pics, more when I get the finish on it!

Bought her a new glove, armguard and purple feathers!!
:wavey:
that's slick!
That's gonna look great Kenny! Got a qiuck question. Did you glue the zebra wood on after the bow came out or did you glue it up with the rest of the bow? Just curious, Mike
Mike, theres probably a better way,but I glued the 3/4" purpleheart to the 2 1/4" zebra, then cut the 2 radius cuts and inserted .060" maple and glued. Then bandsawed between the two main riserwoods and cut the purpleheart riser to its wedge shape. Then glued the bow up with the purpleheart riser, then glued the zebrawood to the belly to make the recurve handle. WHEW!!
The bandsawing and squaring up makes the radius lines line up with minimal fitting when you get the glass and lams in between.
Looks really nice Kenny! Great work! I really like the look of that purpleheart under the glass. Cool stuff!
Looks great friend!
Thanks guys.
Matt,I hope the purple on the riser matches the limbs when finished. It should, outta the same board. Didn't know how purpleheart was for a limb wood, but thats what she wanted ,so I put a thicker red elm core in and went with it!
Tripper, are we goin to the Marshall shoot on the 24th of Feb.? Anybody else close to Marshall,MO wanna go? :wavey:
Purdy!!
Finally done cept for final sanding in a couple days and last coat of finish!! Here she is!

Dang its hard to take good pics in 20 mph wind!!
Wow !!! Very nice. I have been drawing plans up for my first laminated flat bow and the riser you built is nearly identical to what I drew up. I like a flat bow, but like a recurve style riser that melt's into your hand. Looks like you do too !!! At least I have an idea what it will look like when it's done. Very pretty bow !!!! John
Great work Kenny!!!
Bill
Awesome job she looks great!
You are an artist. That's a beautiful bow there.
Thanks guys,I didn't know how the woods would look together, but my wife picked em so we built!! I think they look great. Thanks to V-archer for the pic of osage and purpleheart!! Didn't have osage at the time so we went Zebra.
Wow! You really did a great job on this one. The blending of all the woods for a total overall great look is excellent. She should be proud to be seen anywhere with it even on a bad hair day.
beautiful bow,kenny!
Beautiful bow Kenny. I love that purpleheart under the clear glass. It's a unique look.
Hey Kenny,
The bow turned out just fine, great job!!
I take it that your wife is pleased with the bow.
How's the lams, any nice red cedar yet?
Arnold
aka V-Archer :archer:
Sweet bow, Some great work, I bet she loves it. But if she hates it let me know, and my son will take it off your hands.
very, very nice bud
Thanks guys!! She really likes it,gotta get a good string made for it and some more arras for her. Arnold,I got a good bunch of cedar in,got some pics, heres a pair I cut yesterday...
And the cedar pile..
Only bad thing is the knots,a lot of throw away pieces!
Kenny, great job on the bow. Question: Would the knots in the cedar lams weaken them? Thanks! Tom
Tom,for thin veneers,I don't think the smaller pin knots would. Those bigger ones couldn't be good tho. JMO
Thanks! One more LOL! What's a better wood for lams Juniper or Cedar?I'm wondering how a Bubinga riser with juniper or cedar lams would look. Thanks Tom
That's one great looking bow Kenny! Good job! ;)
Tom, MDOC says red cedar is a true juniper. We always just called it cedar round here tho.
http://www.mdc.mo.gov/forest/IandE/MOConservationTreesAndShrubs/redcedar.html
Thanks again Kenny. Tom
Very nice, Kenny! Great job on lining up the arcs. I never tried putting them in.
That cedar you have looks great and cedar limbs make a great shooting longbow. They look really nice on an osage riser, too.
