Attempt #1. Tried for my MI limit of squirrels today (One of my 2007 goals). It was a great day to be out walking in the woods but I didn't make it. I took about 10 shots but only hit 2. A limit here is 5. I was less than impressed with my shooting. At least I didn't loose any arrows. Well, except for the flu-flu stuck in the side of a pine about 20 feet up. Technically it isn't lost.

Isn't it ironic how close you can get to deer when you are not hunting them. I had a button buck within 10 paces for about 15 minutes or so. Bet I could have hit him.     :p

Here's a picture of a hawk I caught on camera the other day. I can't seem to identify him, the closest I can come is a red-shouldered hawk, but I'm still not sure if that's indeed what it is. I didn't get a good look at it flying, as I only saw it fly for a short while and was in front and level with me when it did. What do you think? The eye seems to say that it's not a red-shouldered hawk, as all the red-shouldered hawks I've seen have completely dark eyes, unlike this one.

I would say a inmature coopers hawk, the little white eyebrow gives him away as well as the dark lines on his tail.In his second year after his first molt he will be a blue steel greay color.I have a couple that love the birds at my feeders.

Trail Cam pics. The pic just prior to this one had several rabbits in it. When I went to check the camera it looked as if there was a struggle in the dirt in front of the camera. When I checked it I found this. I wish I would have gotten him with the rabbit in his mouth. CK

I'm experimenting with some new carbons. I gave up on trying to find some woodies that will fly right, so my friends bought me a dozen carbons for my bday. I dont have the points or inserts yet, they're coming in the snail mail.

My son and I spent a soggy weekend in Ohio trying to fill a deer tag, without luck.....

We were lucky enough to share some hunting stories with the Ferret family, over some Skyline chile and cheese coneys.  Even got several bags of fresh deer jerky to chew on in between rain showers.

Let me see, hunting, food and stories with the Lotz's and fresh jerky.......hmmmmm, does Daniel know how lucky he is?

Are you done yet Jeff, or is there more deer hunting to come?

David
Title: Re: Daily Hunt Pics and Stories 2007
Post by: Jeff Holchin on January 15, 2007, 07:48:00 PM
Yeah, David, I think Daniel knows he's lucky to meet and hang around some serious bowhunters.  I knew there would be plenty of rain and told him he could stay home if he wanted, but he endured 3 days of rain without a complaint!  He is turning out to be a great partner.  I was hoping he would be rewarded with a shot at a rabbit or squirrel, but it just didn't happen.  We saw some deer and that was enough for him.

I guess I'm done with deer hunting for this season.  To ease the pain, I'm headed to the TBG hog/squirrel hunt next weekend, and we plan to get after some rabbits and squirrels here in NC.

Well this is not a good hunting story yet but the possibilities is still there.

This is 2 of the 6 bucks that spent the summer in my back yard. There was high hopes that I might get a chance to harvest the biggest one with my bow, but 2 weeks before the season opened he quit showing up. I did get a chance at a one of the smaller bucks but never saw this one during open season, not bow, not rifle, not muzzleloader, I've not seen him until this day.

MIA from Sept. 14 until Jan 29th........

I went to my neighbors pasture last night and was trying to call in a coyote. I was right in the middle of my best dying rabbit impersonation when out from the timber came 3 deer.

Next deer season I'm gonna blow a preditor distress call. It worked last night.

Sorry the pics are of low quality but it was getting dark and I was in digital zoom.

After probably fighting the last couple of months now they can be friends again.....

Gonna be shed hunting here in the next month or so also. Can't wait to see this one next year.........

I was looking real hard through my camera and my other optics that I had with me looking for pedicals, or however you would say that, the base of shed antlers. Not there, I do believe that that tank is a doe.

And we've had alot of snow and ice for the last month or so, for Oklahoma anyway. Getting 1-3" of snow right now as we speak.

I spent an hour or so before the superbowl hunkered in under a hill watching a cut cornfield with the spotting scope and binos.  TO my suprise there were numerous deer braving the subzero windchills to get out into the corn and try to make enough energy to stay warm.  I saw two exceptional deer.  The first was a nine pointer that would score in the high 140's low 150's.  He still had both his antlers firmly planted on his head and when he jumped two fences to return to the woods i kept wishing his antlers would fall off.  Oh well.  The second deer i saw was a doe that was having a tough go of it.  Apparently a gun hunter had taken a head on shot at her or maybe a severe quartering away shot.  There was a bullet would coming from her elbow area and it literally had been licked clean and was hairless.  Her shoulder was obviously broken and it had healed with her foot sticking straight out in front of her like a pointer to where she was going.  She looked as healthy as she could be and as bad as i felt for her i thought she might be able to make it through the winter with the high protein energy source of the corn field there next to her home.
Seeing that deer made emotions run through my head like anger for an irresponsible hunter taking that unethical shot and hurt for watching her gimp across the corn field.  Yet it made me proud to see her making it the way she was.  Maybe ill see her next year when the season rolls around sporting some healthy fawns with her.  Hope everyone is staying warm out there.

Now I have permission from Tony the Trad. Bowhunter that shot the cat to post his picture.
There is some nice "Kodak Moments" !!!

We actually walked and found these fresh tracks....and folowd them.

We called Dave (the houdsman) over the radio to come to us with the dogs and just kept going after the cat. Here we found where it killed a deer. And that wasn't there the day before!

When Dave reached us with the dogs the chaise was on. It didn't go long but the cat jumped and took the dogs and us on a long run throu some beautiful country.

Finally we got to the tree and Tony placed a perfect arrow.......

Then the work started and Tony packed the cat out all the way !!!

Guys n Gals.......PLEASE remember.....there's a pic size limit of 640 pixels wide!!!

We are now DELETING any pics posted larger than that  for 3 very good reasons.

1) Large pics are a drag on those still on dial up.

I am sorry about that Terry. I think I changed all mine to that size now. My computer did not show that annoying scroll bar or I would have noticed and changed it right away.

Now I can only hope that I wasn't the only one   :knothead:

That looks like a great adventure, Mooseman.

My son and I drove to south Georgia to meet a new Tradgang friend, Petri from Finland (aka Rambler).  I thought that I traveled a little for my adventures, but this man has me beat.  He is here in America to chase some hogs and explore new country, so we met up, did some walking and shot a few arrows......

The weather was beautiful but the hogs were bashful.  We did see some deer, turkeys, armidillos and otters.  I had to return home but he is still out there, wandering the swamps, pine thickets and fields of Georgia.

A Charlie Lamb teaser from last night. These spotted cats seem to be everywhere. I keep catching them on the trail cameras.

This is a wonderment of nature. When ya live in Texas ya need to watch where you are flying. Anything flying under the radar is likely to run into something sharp. Bad Moon rising on the horizon. It will be his last Moon rise.

When it rains it pours around here. We either live in complete drought conditions or we float from all the rain. If only the Human Race could find the means to pull together like these Fire Ants do we'd not ever have any survival issues. The strong certainly do survive even when they are very small. CK

Might be the work of a Shrike as well.  Don't know if you have em down there but they stab their prey onto thorns to immobile/store it while they eat.

Looks like Loggerheads may winter down there.

Little Big Hog! I've now got three wild hogs as pets. These two little fellas weigh about 2-3# each. I've been bottle feeding them and all they do is follow me around the Barnyard squeeling. They want me to hold them all the time. They came out of the swamp where there were literally hundreds of hogs. CK

I got this picture the other day,on my new job. This bull had a injured hoof and made his last stand in the water. Pretty cool to read the story in the snow.
A big Tom lion made several attempts to get thru his head gear and get his neck broke. Then couldn't get him outta the stream, had to feed on him by sitting on top of him.

Both animals have my highest respect, it don't get much more real than this.

When he was just about the size of a football I would water the front yard and smoke a cigar and all my neighbors would come over and play with him and he would chase the kids on the lawn, some people driving by would stop and ask what kind of dog was it, I'd tell them, it's a wild boar we caught and thy-ed park their car and come and see him.

He would sleep with my son in his bed, and he was house broke, he got to big and my wife kicked him out.

So people still come and see him almost every day.

But his time with me will be coming to an end soon, when I go into his pen he just wants to play and he's kicking my a, I have dislocated my shoulder twice while playing with him.

He has vary little tusk and he wackes me with his head, so when he gets his tusk he'll tare me up and he'll just think he's playing with me.

His name is PUTTSY, and I don't eat anything I name, so he gets a reprieve, he gets to go back to the wild, just don't know how I'm going to get him back.

I was thinking of getting him drunk so he wont fight us putting him in the truck.

Had a good time this weekend. Place: Choppers Wild Hog Adventures  www.birdsandboars.com (http://www.birdsandboars.com)  in Hollister California.

I got parked about 4:00 or so and started into my spot i found a place that had some trails leading to a creek looked good so i ploped down in a rock pile about 4:30 and started my wait.

Here is where it gets good. About 5:10 a big black boar with a white band around his chest comes down the hill, starts to nose around and gets to about 15 yards from me, my heart is going of course, he turns quartering away and stands there as to say go ahead and shoot me if you can. I draw hit my anchor and zip it all felt good arrow was on its way to the sweet spot. Well right about the sound of the bow going off the boar dips his right sholder pushes off with his frount feet and #^$#$$#, missed by that much. It was a perfect shot the arrow went right where i wanted to, the pig was just not there when the arrow got there.

So now im trying to calm down and about 15 min later i hear noise behind me. I start to turn, get about half way around and im busted by a boar about 12 yards away i freeze and about 15 pigs come over the nobb. The one that busted me snorts and trots about 4 or 5 yards and stops. It looks like i have a shot at a black boar about 20 yards off and i decide to take it, Im getting ready to draw and they start to spook so i rush to draw and anchor and zip right over his back, this one was my bad, if i would have made a good shot there would have been one in the cooler the first night.

So now im trying to get my pulse down to a normal level. 20 min goes by and about 8 more hogs are on there way feeding right to me and we all know what happens now, the wind, it switches and there off to the races.

By now it starting to get dark and who do i see but the black boar with the white stripe, he decides he wants to try again, he feeds his way in behind a bush and tree about 8 yards from me, I am at half draw waiting for him to clear the tree and $%#&^%$ he spooks and is gone in a heart beet.

Its to dark to see so off to the truck i go and for the first 50 to 60 yards i can hear hogs all over the place. i get to the cabin and stories and food abound. Get to sleep and yes i dream about hogs.

Im up early and off i go back to my spot i get there a little late, its about 5:40, sun starts up and there is just enough light to see. I hear some noise comming and i stand up to get ready, as soon as this hog clears the trees he looks right at me, i freez he takes 2 steps and stares at me then 2 to 3 and looks again then he does it, 2 steps and stops with his head right behind a tree, I come to full draw he takes a few more steps and zip right through the good stuff, he turns runs right back up the hill, loops around comes back down and dies right in the middle of the road, THATS RIGHT 0 DRAG, got to love it. here is what he looks like:

This past weekend in South Texas. Hunted with John Hurt, Tom "TP" Parsons, and John Tribett.

I shot my javalina with a 60", 58# @ 29" Thunder Stick MOAB with 620 grains of CX Heritage and Simmons Tiger Shark BH.

"TP", of course, shot his huge rattlesnake with a Kimsha Mattawoman II he builds and John Hurt shot his snake with a BW PLX.

My first successful medieval-style hunt.  I was wearing a mostly hand-sewn, 14th C. style outfit, and I used a 60# English longbow with self-nocked arrows (made by Trad Gang's Ragi) that were tipped with hand-forged broadheads.

Finally, I actually shot a turkey with my recurve bow and cedar arrow. I missed 3 toms last week while trying to make a head shot on them. Discovered that is a small target that never stays still for more than a moment. Yesterday I decided I would body shoot the next one I got a chance at but I ended up shooting low and missing. Today it all came together.

I stepped from behind a tree to see a tom looking right at me from about 60 yards out. He didn't cut and run like I expected but he was nervous and headed away from me. I stood still and watched him disappear in the underbrush. After several minutes passed with no sign of him I changed my position a little and made a few yelps on my wing bone call. I heard no response but figured I would just stay put since I now had good cover and threatening skies meant the hunt might be over soon anyway.

Suddenly some movement caught my eye. It was a tom, perhaps the same tom, and he was heading my direction. This could be my chance if I didn't get noticed again. I tried to keep my body and bow concealed behind the oak next to me and then I focused on remaining calm and not moving anything but my eyes. He slowly made his way along, picking at this and that and always pausing to listen and look around. I knew I would have to let him pass by in order to get a shot but already my heart was picking up the tempo.

As he passed behind my tree something caused him to gobble and I just about jumped out of my skin. He was probably less than 15 yards away and I wasn't expecting that. His was the first gobble I had heard all day. Moments later he gobbled again. I used that as my cue to lean out and have a look at him. Suddenly he fluttered his wings as if he was stretching them out and that was the commotion I needed to make my move. I stepped from behind the tree and drew simultaneously. My eye settled into the center of his back and the arrow was off. My aim had been true and the big bird tumbled forward. His beating wings told me the arrow had not broken his back and might actually be able to get away. I quickly knocked a second arrow as I rushed him. In a reflex motion I drew and the arrow struck the tom in the head. Now it was over. I had my turkey. A nice tom with a 9" beard and plenty of good meat for a turkey dinner. As I picked him up to go the rains started to fall.

I got my first Bighead!

Last Saturday Rick Stillman (Fletcher) and I went down to the United Bowhunters of Illinois' annual "Bowfish and BBQ Bash", at Rend Lake, near Benton, Illinois. If you've never been... good people, good food, unlimited shooting opportunities, GREAT TIME!

We did most of our shooting in the Big Muddy River, below the dam. You could shoot gar down there until your arm fell off, plus there's commons, buffalo, dogfish, and of course, these babies...

I really don't like showing off for myself but I couldn't resist the chance to post results from my latest hunt.  I guess I'll do this to brag on the equipment used, how's that?

My brother and Dad had done all the pre-hunt work- running the bait and all.  All I had to do was show up and hunt (with a tight schedule and 3 days to hunt, this was great!).  Well, on my first morning in the stand this smaller blonde phase bear came in.  He fooled around for a little while and finally posed broadside at just under 15 yards.  I really don't remember drawing to shoot, but I did see the arrow disappear right where I was looking.  As the bear was running away I could see the blood shooting out both sides of his chest so I knew it wouldn't take long... and sure enough just as he turned out of sight at 50 yards he came cartwheeling down the steep hill.  What a feeling!  It was an incredible experience.  To top it all off my brother Mike was right there, catching it all on video.

For the hunt I used a custom GrizzlyBows 3 piece take-down longbow, 55# at 28".  I was shooting GrizzlyBows Arrows as well, tapered laminated birch tipped with razor sharp 190 gr. grizzlies for a total arrow wt of 720 gr.  It was unbelievable how quick that arrow zipped through the bear and stuck in the ground on the other side- A true testament to how effective a longbow can be if it is built right and tuned correctly with some heavy arrows.

Not a large bear, but being my only bear it sits at #1 in my book!  Besides, taking this bear served as icing on the cake for a weekend of hunting with my favorite crew- My dad Mike and my brothers Steve, Mike, and Dan.  Truly a hunt to remember.

Title: Re: Daily Hunt Pics and Stories 2007

BaldingEagle,
I would have to say that the Axis Deer would be my favorite to eat!  It's my favorite to eat but the hardest to shoot! I had to belly crawl about 200 yards to get a 25 yard shot on that buck!  Next would be the boar,  Love to eat smoked pork and pork sausage. Then would be the sheep and last would be the goat.  The goats are the easiest to hunt, but rank last in my favorite eating list!

Thanks for sharing those pics Ry!!!

Do you have to hop islands to hunt the different species or do you hunt one island?  Do you ever hunt turkeys in your adventures there?

I have a piece of Koa I am getting ready to incorporate into a bow.  Have you ever had any experience working with Koa that might help me look out for something I might not expect as far as gluing problems...

Good hunting,
Charles
Title: Re: Daily Hunt Pics and Stories 2007
Post by: RySanpei on June 22, 2007, 02:12:00 PM
Thanks Dave.
Charles, yes I have to fly to the different islands to hunt.  I live on Oahu and we only have goats and pigs here.  The feral sheep and goats were shot on the island of Hawaii, and the axis deer were shot on Molokai.  The pigs were shot on the island that I live on.
We do have turkeys and other game birds on the islands, but I've never hunted for them though.
Sorry I've never worked with Koa myself, but I did send a piece to a friend and he said that he had to impregnate the wood with resin when he used it in his riser. Selfbow or laminated?  I'll try to get you more info about the wood.  I'll send you a pm if I can find out more.

Thanks herkimerhunter, I do love it here!

Vinnie, This year I hunted with my Black Widow, Thunderhorn, Centaur, and Dalaa.  All of my bows range from 50 to 55 pounds @ 25 inches. My draw length is 25.5 inches.  I've been using footed Beman mfx and st axis arrows. My arrows weigh about 9 grains per inch.  One thing that I did try this year was that I switched to standard Muzzy four blades, the one with the trocar tip. I do sharpen the trocar tips. I've got complete pass throughs on every animal this year, except on two of my biggest boars.

Post by: VinnieB on June 24, 2007, 10:58:00 PM
that's awesome. how much do your arrows weigh overall. is it just the 9gpi arrows or do you add a weight tube. the whole reason i ask is because i also shoot a 50 pound longbow with 9gpi arrows and muzzy 125grain 3 blades. jw if my set up would be adequate for deer.

thanks. btw awesome trophy's.
Title: Re: Daily Hunt Pics and Stories 2007
Post by: RySanpei on June 25, 2007, 01:06:00 AM
Sorry I meant about 9 grains per pound not inch.  I use the muzzy 145 grain four blades, an 1 3/4" 2020 aluminum footing sleeve which weighs 25 grains and the standard axis insert.  I've been using mostly the beman 500 classics which are 9.7 gpi. My complete arrows weigh about 470 grains.  My farthest shot on a axis deer was at 35 yards and I still got a complete pass though.  I feel the key is tuning, tuning and tuning.

Here is a pic of a black bear that I killed in Northern Saskatchewan.  A friend of mine talked me into picking up a stick bow last fall and also talked me into going on this bear hunt with him at the end of May 2007.  He is my first trad kill ever (first bow kill)  and I did it with a Morrison 66 pound recurve and Carbon Express Arrows that were built by Sandy Horne at Horne's Archery.  I was on cloud nine after finding him piled up after about a 50 yard blood trail.  He weighed 550 lbs. and green scored 20 and 1/8 inches.  I am now completely hooked on this stick bow hunting.  Cannot wait to kill my first whitetail.  The pics don't do him justice.  (http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x218/Stripstrike1/DSC00166.jpg)

Took a nice woods walk a few weeks ago on the family land "Up North" in northern Michigan, and in an hours time I managed get within 10 yards of a whitetail, kicked up a nice ruffed grouse, and after many failed attemps, managed to blood my Northern Mist for the first time! This one was a bruiser, he mst have gone at least 6 ounces!  :archer:

Thought I would put up a couple of pictures of my N. Ca. bear hunt.
I used this snakey osage selfbow I made a few months ago, cedar arrows and zwickey eskimos.
I saw much bigger bears but I found this one feeding his way up this stream (blackberries). I got within 10 yards and he presented the perfect shot. The Zwickey came about 8" out the other side.  The bear shot up a tree right beside me and died about 30ft up the tree.  From the time I shot and the time he was dead was about 15 or 20 seconds, that was the fastest I have ever seen an animal bleed out.  That was probably the most action packed 20 seconds I have seen in a long time.

Gorgeous bow Mark, nice bear too.  My first black bear ran up a tree too.  I shot him while he was standing up preparing to climb the tree.  I wanted to get closer, but had to settle for the 8 yard shot before he bolted. I took out one lung and you could hear him labouring to breath, took about a minute for him to tumble. Nothing beats stalking black bear with the bow.

I posted this over at PA, but thought you guys would like to see some neat scenery from my latest hunt.
I built this little bow early this spring out of necessity, because I couldn't shoot any other bows I had out of my turkey blind that my wife bought me.  The bow ended up being 54" long, and pulls just over 55lbs at 28.  I did shoot a turkey with it this spring but after an exhaustive search, I was unable to find the bird.  Feeling a little bummed about it, I put the bow up and continued shooting my Strunk yew longbow.  Well, a few months ago, I picked the bow back up, and was amazed at how good I was shooting it.  I had some good hunts coming up this year, so thought, what the heck, lets take "Little Shorty" out.
Adventure number 1 -- I backpacked about 4 and a half miles into the Holy Cross Wilderness area early Saturday morning for a few days of deer and elk hunting.  I had not actually been in this section before, and was not sure how the hike in was.  Everything about this area is RUGGED!  The hike in consisted of the first 2.8 miles being straight up. I left the truck at 10,000ft and ended up at the pass I crossed over at 12,600ft.  After crossing the pass, it opened up to miles of Colorado high country with not a hunter or hiker in site (and this is Labor Day weekend).   On Sunday, I spotted two mulies feeding in a draw up above timber.   I got a good look at them, and they were both monster bucks! I had the wind right and started my stalk.  When I peeked up over the edge of the draw, the bucks were 50 yards away, and totally unaware.   as the bucks fed away from me, I made a move to get to some cover, and WHAM!! one of the bucks spots me, and they are gone!  I only needed 20-25 yards but it wasn't in the cards that day. Anyways, it was well worth the effort, and that was the first time I've seen deer of that caliber outside of Rocky Mountain National Park, or in a backyard in Boulder, LOL.   Monday morning, I jumped a group of cow elk way down in the dark timber.  One of the larger cows stood broadside looking at me at 25yards.  I slowly got an arrow nocked and started to bring my bow up. The cow just stood there looking at me.  I ended up just watching her for 30 seconds or so before she bust out.  I could have made the shot, but there is no way I could of got her out of there that day and been at work Tuesday morning.  It was probably 6 miles from the trailhead with a 2000ft elevation gain straight up out of there.  If it had been the first day, I wouldn't have hesitated. All in all, 2 real opportunities in 3 days of hunting, well that ain't bad Wink

Adventure number 2 will continue next week.  I have a bighorn ewe tag in Colorado's famed Georgetown area, S-32.  Unfortunately, I couldnt make it for the opener today due to work obligations, but I'm going to be up there from Friday until the season closes on the 19th.  Hopefully, "Little Shorty" will finally get a chance to make meat !!

Long story short, overlooking two large cranberry patches and saw him come in. A long stalk later, 24 yrd shot, quartering away, thought I hit a bit far back but it got both lungs, I'm still shaking !!!!!

Man am I ever excited right now, my heart is still going 100 miles an hour.

Its going to be a hot day here and I need to get the hide off as soon as possible.

This doe came in really late yesterday afternoon, 7:53 to be exact. Gave me a shot at 10 yds. It was dark enough that I didn't know if it was a buck or doe. Couldn't see my arrow in flight, but the shot felt good. She ran off about 20 yds. and stopped. After she stands there for about 5-10 seconds, I'm thinking "Did I miss that deer?" After 20 seconds, I'm sure that I missed her. Then, all of a sudden, she bolts and makes it about 10 more yards before she goes down. I'm convinced she never knew what hit her.

No Don, this time I was using an Interceptor with an experimental single-bevel grind.  Not too much to report on it as I didn't hit much bone.  Only about 3/4 of a rib going in.  I did notice a slight "S" shape to the cut in the rib.  Here's a pic of the head:

Here's my first of this year, and a fine way to start! I was using a snakey piece of black locust I tillered out to 62# at 27", 66" long, backed with timber rattler. I call her "Big Medicine".

By far my best day of shooting, and I hope to do so well this weekend on a little bigger game....

Local critter, shot him about 2 miles from the house.

DAS riser, W&W carbon/maple limbs, 60", 55#@28, 410 grn arrow, 125 grn Muzzy Phantom 4 blade, 31 yards, pass through, heard him crash. Hunted solo, 18 days, afternoons until dark, shot him at 6:08 PM Sept. 11, '07

Interesting rack, I will do a European mount.

Typical Roosie, huge body, smallish rack...he's four or five years old, going by his teeth...oh yeah, can you say dee-lish-ous????   :)

Here's my first deer with the longbow. Shot her last Wednesday Sept 5. Used a Dwyer 56# @28 64" long. With a GT 3555 traditional arrow tipped with a 160 grain land shark. I shot her at 23 yards, back of the lungs she only ran about 60 yards before she piled up. It was a fun day!

Long time friend Doug Johnson and I went into the Cohutta Wilderness again .....

We walked in the old logging road to a mound of dirt I knew could be used as a tripod for a morning pic right where Doug and I usually split up.  I kid you not, as I was setting up the camera, just moments before this pic, a bear came out of a tree not 30 yards from us.

Here's another pic of Doug on a pretty mountain slope...

Here's a really big white oak...take note of the 'strange bark pattern'....that's what a tree looks like when bears climb it year after year.

Pattern and fresh claw marks farther up...

Bears take the path of least resistance....here's the same tree and the 'divide'.  This tree has an uphill lean, and the bears alway climb this easy side, notice how the bark patterns change as the left side has been smoothed out over the years....

A few photos from our NM elk hunt in the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. We were into elk every day but could not close the deal. I had a 6x7 at 40yds, no shot, blew a stalk on a big 6x6, had the wind ruin chances at three bulls and on the last evening stalked a spike, just a mile from the truck, but the evening breeze changed my plans. We did have a great time.

Mandatory stop by the VLA on the way down.

A dried up wallow. The grass behind it was still matted down and soaked with urine. I put the camera up, walked to the edge of the rise and bumped a small 6x6 that had bedded just out of sight.

Just wanted to put up a few pictures of my North Idaho Elk trip. We did not shoot an Elk but had several very close calls.
It was a trip home for me so a few of the days were spent visiting family also. I got to hunt with my older brother, my favorite hunting partner!

This is the Panhandle National Forest between Lake Coeur d'Alene and Lake Pend Oreille.

We hunted for six days and the first thing we did each day was climb 2,000-3,000 ft of the steepest brushiest terain around just to get to the Elk. Then you can start hunting.

We found a nice shed, one of the big boys we were chasin.

Had a little time to fish, caught a nice little Steelhead.

Enjoy. Take care,

My brother and I came across something special in the woods last year. We found some large nut husks that were all over an area. I took one home to look it up as I had never seen one before. Turns out they were Chestnuts.

All the nuts were gone at that time so I resolved to get back in there the following year in the early season. This year found us in there for a scout and sure enough they were coming down and the deer were all over them.

If you look carefully in the picture (taken from stand) you can see the grove of trees as there are two parallel rows. I am not sure if they were planted on an old farm or if it was done for wildlife long ago. Either way this grove is in the middle of a several hundred acre woodlot.

My brother and I had made one mistake when we were scouting though. We did not mark or bright eye our way to the stand    :banghead:  .

As you can see in this picture it is very thick and a long walk from where we park to get to this area. I was very fortunate to not only to find this area again but to also find the exact tree that we thought would be good. This picture is taken from the stand facing the direction the deer would hopefully approach from.

I thought it would take me a long time to find my way in the dark so I was setup pretty early. It was a nice early fall morning with 50 degree temps and clear skies.

At around 7:25 I was able to make out the body of a deer about 40 yards away. I watched as it meandered through the grove in my direction. As it cleared the brush I could see that is was a forkhorn. I knew I was not interested in shooting a forkie so I hoped he would wander off without getting my wind. There would be no such luck and he ended up 12-15 away over my left shoulder exactly in the spot in this picture.

He was okay there but eventually ended up too close to my tree and got my wind. He bounded away and proceeded to blow for a couple minutes warning everybody about the guy in the tree.

About 20 minutes later I picked out another body and hoped that it would follow the same path that the forkhorn did. Sure enough it slowly meandered its way through the trees and wound up in the same spot as the forkhorn just off my left shoulder.

I picked a spot and let the string fall from my fingers. The arrow hit just where I was looking and I listened as the deer crashed through the brush and came to a stop.

I called my hunting partners who also happen to be my brothers. Neither were hunting at the time but both graciously came out to help with the dragging and transport.

Good ol long nose. Great way to start a season!

I have hunted for a lot of years, and have taken my share of deer in the past.  I have always been stuck in the trees however, and had never taken a deer from the ground.

Last year I did try it a few times, and had a couple of close encounters, but no shots.  This year I wanted to make even more of an effort, and last night, on my first trip to the whitetail woods for the season, I connected with a nice doe.

She passed at less than 10 yards, and caught me when I started my draw.  But after a brief glance my way, she continued on her path without another thought.  Apparantly the ghillie did its job.

If ya'll remember my post about falling from a ladderstand earlier this year whle moving it;

I moved it up to a spot with muscadines and persimmons on the edge of a clearcut. I've been waiting for a south wind to hunt it and got one yesterday. I had 6 does and two decent bucks broadside, witin 15 yards in the span of 2 hours. GREAT spot!

Very tasty! I shot this deer on opening day with a bow I got from RC. Bob Lee 52#@28,55/60 cedars, 160 grain Snuffers. I used Dead Down Wind scent eliminator which has been the best I've used so far.

Arwin,
Congrats on that opening day baldy!  Took my son out last night for our first hunt of the year.  Saw 2 squirrels, 2 coons, and one deer.  It didn't wander down our trail to the oak ridge we were "guarding".  Maybe tonight- a bit warm, but better than sitting at home!

Way to go Whip!  Getting a deer from the ground is cool.  I've done it twice, but with the compound at 30 yds.  This is my first year hunting with trad gear and a deer from the ground is my goal.  10 yds - that's great!  I got a doe last weekend w/ a 3pc take down longbow I made myself, so now I'm ready for the ground!!  Might need a ghillie suit.

Had another great evening.  A buddy and I climbed up in a red oak next to an alfalfa field.  We have both tagged out on our bucks and the plan was to video a doe harvest.  After losing the rock, paper, scissors I found myself holding the camera.  About 7 a doe walked by.  He drilled her and she ran up and fell being the truck at the barn.  Then a very nice 9 point walked directly under us.  Then he took the camera and I picked up my bow.  Had a doe walk in right about 7:35 and I drilled her at 20 yards right about the same spot that he had shot his.

Mmm Mmm skwerl!! nice shot Bowfire.  A little panfry skwerl would hit the spot right about now.

Finally the temps are going down around here so I figured I'd get out this morning. Decided to sit the junction blind 'cause I had shot a big buck here a few years back under similar conditions. About 6:20 I saw a nice doe but she never came in close enough for a shot. At about 10:30 I figured it would only take me about an hour to hike home and make some lunch. So I took a few pics of the blind I just sat in all morning. Hopefully the hollow blind will have some action this afternoon. Maybe I'll bring a few of my small game arrows and score like Bowfire did.

Well, I finally connected Saturday morning 7:50 A.M. , one week into the Virginia archery season.
Black Widow MAV 64" 56 @30" . 55/75 GT 175 Gr. Grizzly BH. Deer was walking at steady pace and I didn't account for it well enough. Shot was back in the liver. Still only went about 150 yds. Sparse blood trail to follow ( I'm not liking these Grizzlys). My best buck yet with the bow.

That is a good'un Kenny.  Congrats.

You say he went 150 yards.  I started using a little trick every time I shoot a deer.  Just as soon as the arrow has hit the deer and they start to take off I loudly mouth grunt two or three times.  They have seldom traveled more than 30 yards before they stop and look for the sound.  I guess they think another buck has poked them.

Had a good day today. No shots but saw a small 6pt. and two does he thought he'd chase. Explore a little on my new lease and walked in areas that hadn't had anyone there in many years. I almost felt as if I was intruding. I took a few pics that I'd like to share.

It was warm and windy here over the weekend. Not much activity deer-wise. I had a skwerrel come within 8 feet of me before he realized I was there in my ground blind. He hopped up on a trunk and barked at me for 5 minutes. It would have been an easy head shot, but I wasn't going to waste a vintage Bear Razorhead on him. I had to throw a stick at him to get him to go away.     The temps dropped 30 deg overnight last night though!

She stopped broadside at 7 yards oblivious to my presence.  I drew and just as I was about to release she turned to check on the rest of her party.  I had to wait until she turned back to quartered away at 18 yards.  First from the ground and first with a homemade bow.

I got home from work tonight and felt that little chill in the air and I had a real good feeling.  I hiked back to my stand 1/2 mile from the house and was settled in by about 5:45.

About 6:15 I saw a group of does heading down the trail in front of my stand.  They were moving right along and I wasn't quite sure at first if there was a shooter but the lead doe looked to be pretty long in the snout.    :)

The doe stopped in my shooting lane I had lots of time to draw and focus on the spot.  The arrow blew right through but hit high and back.  I didn't like the shot placement too well at all but she headed in a direction where I could watch her pretty well and within 60 yards and about 1 minute soon she was down.

I was shooting a 50# Super Shrew with Carbon Express 150s, 100gr insert and 150gr Woodsman.  I hit the bottom of the cartilidge where the ribs meet the backbone and it curled that Woodsman up pretty good(sharpened to a needle point).  I missed the liver but got the top of the off side lung.  I was happy to have a heavier arrow for this shot than my normal cedar and 125gr Woodsman.

Great job Mick!!  Good to see you getting your season off to a good start with meat in the freezer.  I will be hunting a farm in Clio this weekend that my dad and I have permission to hunt.  We have hunted there over 20 years and ever since I moved I always look forward to making home a couple weekends to hunt.

I shot this little 7 pointer last evening. He passed me out of range looking for does I guess and I made a few calls with the "can" and he came back and stopped 7 yards from my stand. I saw him fall. I used a 52# Great Northern Fireball and a 690 grain larch arrow with an Eclipse broadhead.

Yes, I thought I was going to have a hero pic of me with a doe on here this morning. Oh so close! I saw plenty more but I had 6 nice does out in front of my ground blind, no more than 10 yards away! That's a little nerve racking when you have that many pairs of eyes looking in your general direction. I'd had been playing cat and mouse with 2 of them for 20 minutes. They'd move a little closer to the blind each time they came back, then, finally, 6 of them walked right up to my blind location. I'm patiently waiting for one of the fatter ones to turn just right when they all lift their heads and perch their ears in a direction over my left shoulder. Then I here the unmistakable steady plodding of a buck coming our way. The brush is too thick to see him but he's coming. I think "Oh great, now they got me surrounded." (chuckle) He picks up his pace to almost a trot and that's all they needed to hear. They didn't snort, but they all got out of Dodge quick! Last I heard of him, he was moving through the wooded ravine, in their direction. I waited for dark and watched my shadow as I "snuck" across the corner of the pasture under the full moon. Exciting night.

It's been a good year for Tradgangers - nice photos and stories.

I'm out of vacation time but I slipped down to southern Georgia for a day in the swamps with my TBG friends on an unofficial group hunt, searching for hogs and deer.  I spent more time driving to/from than hunting, and I'll have to work tomorrow to compensate, but it was worth it.  As usual, my friend RC didn't disappoint and showed me some honey holes along the river...

This man can hunt and is very successful on public land, which we were hunting!  If he ever offers to take you hunting, you would do well to accept the offer.  I was happy to breath in the fresh air after a welcome rain, hear the sounds of the lowcountry, and see the palmettos and huge cypress trees...

We saw some turkeys, a few deer but nothing close, and had 3 chances at putting a hog or two in the cooler.  Early RC pushed a young boar to me from a small river island, but standing shots have been challenging for me lately so I didn't even consider shooting as it charged past me.  Later we had a  group of about a dozen porkers feeding towards us, but a stray breeze foiled us near this bottom..

We ended the day by spooking one last boar while searching for Indian pottery fragments in an overgrown foodplot.  What a short but sweet hunt!

I envy you guys. I wish I could go hunting. I decided to become a fire fighter/MFR and with work, schooling and being on call I can't find any time to hunt. It is 4 weeks into our archery deer season and I have only been out for one morning hunt and one evening. How depressing. I usually live in the woods this time of year. Oh well, at least someone gets to be there.     :(

this is my first whitetail off the ground, shot her from a double bull blind, it worked like a charm, even used the shoot thru netting which i was very scared of doing but i had no ill effect at about 18yds. i used a Striker Stinger at 50# with a homemade wood shaft with a magnus 2 blade 125 grain. she went about 40yds and piled up it was a good october day in the woods

Kinda cloudy so work at the grain elevator I manage was slow. Snuck out a little early to sit a tree ahead of the forecasted high winds.

Got settled in about 4:50. Watched a fox stalk some squirrels while things calmed back to normal. Then about 5:05 I softly grunted two times. Not a minute later a nice 8 point materializes out of the thick stuff about 50 yards away.

He walks toward me about 10 yards then stops under a white oak to suck up some acorns. After about 3 or 4 minutes he resumes heading my way then suddenly veers off. I quicky fish the grunt call back out of my jacket and give a couple of soft toots. That straightens him out and suddenly he's moving through my shooting lanes. A 22 yard shot with the old recurve passes through him taking out both lungs and the top of his heart. He tears off and a few seconds later I hear him crash. Wait about 15 minutes then find him after following a 120 yard blood trail a blind hippie could follow.

I was a little bit more excited about the whole thing than my grandaughter, Cadence.

Bow - Robertson Prarie Falcon, 60# @ 29". Black locust limbs. Built for me back in '84 and it's made a lot of meat since then.

Arrow - Laminated birch

Broadhead - Magnus I - 2 blade

horn mojo...

After I finished working up the buck I wrote about a few posts back, I contemplated on what to do with the rack.  I decided they were just about the right size for a set of rattlin’ antlers.  So today, after a morning shower allowed me to close the business at noon I hustled home, whacked the antlers off the buck's head, got my clothes changed and gear together, grabbed my new set of “rattlers” and headed for the woods.

The wind was blowing I’d say about 15.  A  little windy for good rattling success, but knowing I had nothing to lose, about 4:00 I beat them together.  Nothing responded.

About 5:00 I tried again.  I had only hung the horns up for maybe 3 minutes when I saw a nice 8 point coming through the woods at a fair pace.  True to form for rattled in bucks he came right up to my stand,  stopped and stood there looking for the action.  Down to my last buck tag and realizing the deer had the potential to be a real bruiser someday, I decided to pass on the 8 yard  standing broadside shot.

After a half a minute or so he started to move off.  However, I guess he was still wanting a fight or to at least watch one because he only made a short loop and came right back in again, this time stopping broadside at 12 yards.   Enough already!  I figured the Lord must be wanting me to shoot this deer.   So I shot him.  A picture perfect double-lunger.   After following another copious blood trail for 90 yards he was mine.  Kinda cool to kill him by rattling him in with the antlers of a buck I shot just 2 days before.

Cadence still hasn’t caught Pop-Pops’s excitement.

Shot this guy yesterday morning, only hit one lung and he ran a half-mile before laying down. If not for the help of a neighbor and my dad I wouldn't have found him. Grunted and bleated him into 23 yards and he walked off, then pulled out the rattling horns and when he came back to watch the fight, I sent an arrow his way at 16 yds. shot a buck 2 days ago. Hit him high and my arrow only went in about 3-4 in. Left him overnight and still could not find him. Tracked him for hours and about 900 yards. last 200 yards was specks of blood every 10-30 feet. I think he lived.

I shot a nice tall 8pt from the ground tonight. He was quartering away pretty hard. I hit him in back of lungs/liver area. Arrow went in about 7-8 in. Should be good. I heard him run off and then stop. No crash. I backed out and went to work. I hope I find him in morning to boost my recurve's confidence level.

Starting to wonder about myself... I shot and found 6 deer with recurve so far this year. I know I shouldn't be feeling this way. I just don't know why a 60lb recurve with 390grain arrow and razor sharp magnus stinger won't punch through. It did on my other deer i shot.

It makes me sick to think of wounding a deer. i'll try to post a picture tommorow if I find him.

At first light, a doe came running through with a nice buck hot on her heels.  The buck was growling like crazy.  Then about 15 minutes later, this buck came to check out what all of the commotion was about.  I shot him at 15 yards through his lungs and through the heart.  He was quartering slightly away.  He ran about 100 yards before he expired.
I am very proud of this buck.  I put a lot of effort into scouting this property, hanging stands, and glassing this summer.  All of the effort was more than worth it.

Rivers Edge Recurve 53#, Beman Classic MFX arrows, Wensel Woodsman broadhead

RandH, You answered your own question..."390gr arrow". Add 150-200grs to that and I can guarantee diff. results. That is if we're talking about a well tuned arrow...both yours and a heavier one.

Just a suggestion...

Also please refrain from posting about a hit before you have the results..too much of that lately.Good luck...

This little doe came in about 7:30 Sat morning and milled around my stand for about 10-15 minutes, at one point even sniffing the steps on my climbing stick.  She finally offered a good slam dunk shot and I took it.  I know this is the big buck week, but I've been having some shooting issues this year and this shot was too good to pass.  Lots of thought and concentration made it work.  Double lung, 60 yd run and down in sight.  Chuck Jones Osage Royale longbow, compressed cedar shaft and Ace Express head.  After dressing and hanging her in the shade, I went back and sat in a different stand and had two 2 1/2 yr bucks come in.  One nice 8 and a broke antler 3 by ?  Let them both walk for another year or two.  Great morning.

Well, Saturday, I took my 10 y.o. Daughter hunting with me in the natural ground blind. Later in the afternoon, we had a doe running along the edge of the field, headed our way. I got my bow ready and thought about stopping her to shoot. As she got closer I noticed she was running with her mouth wide open, looking like she was being chased. I elected not to shoot her and whispered to my daughter to watch for a buck. Of course, the buck never appeared. Oh well... Still an exciting moment. My daughter's eyes got real big, seeing that doe duck into the woods, right in front of us, just 5 yards away.

Took this Buck in Kansas this weekend hunting with Ralph Renfro (Ksbow) and John Cooke (Johnbow) with a 60" Longriver Elk longbow, 55#, Beeman Classic arrow,100 grn weighted insert, Magnus 135grn 2 blade head.
This is normally my turkey blind bow but I have been shooting so well that I decided to use it for this trip.
8 point, 132lb dressed. Hunting from a tree stand in some cedars and locust along a CRP grass field and plum thickets. Saw several small bucks and some doe when this buck came across a opening with two smaller bucks. I used a grunt call twice and they took a line that would put them just 15yds from my stand.
Waited until the big one stepped behind a cedar and drew. When he appeared, it was all automatic. Took him in the near shoulder, through the heart and broke the leg bone on the exit side. Ran 20 yds and fell within site.
It is great to hunt with friends and icing on the cake when you score and they can be there to share it.

Congrats to all. Looks like most are having a great year. Keep 'em coming for guy's like me who can't go out and play.

I'm still hoping to get out there but it's not looking good. Even though I live on huntable land I haven't had the chance to even scout it this year. First time in 20 years I might not get a deer. The fire service owns me right now and will through out the rest of the season.   :(

The day started of sunny w/quite a bit of wind.I headed to my stand for a afternoon hunt.A few days b4 I went to put some food out a make a mock scrape. As I came close to my stand I noticed the mock was twice the size,my food was gone, and the tree next to it,which of good size was torn up!!Of course now my spirits were high.Around 2:45 I let out a few "soft" grunts and waited. At 3;05 I turned to my right to see a buck coming in lickin his nose.Being my treestand was in a cluster of trees I had to wait for the right moment to meneuver the recurve for a shot. After he cleared some brush he was in the spot for my shot, quartering away 15 yds.I "picked my spot" and let a 29.5" 1916 autum orange XX75 tipped w/125 Stinger 2 bld. slip from my fingers. The arrow hit its mark and the buck took off.I let out a few grunts and he stopped about 20 yds away and turned to smell the arrow which was sticking out (99%) the other side, then turned walked another 15-20 yds and fell over. What a feeling it was to take such a magnificent animal traditional style.I waited 25 mins. came down, thanked the lord and did alittle dance. In the meantime I had called over my hunting buddy and he arrived seconds later. What a day!!

Here's a couple I killed on Blackbeard Island three weeks ago, a hog, 4 pointer, and a spike. The second buck was my first stone point kill. I started flintknapping last spring and finally knocked out a couple of points and got one hafted to a cane shaft.

Christopher,
The stone tip performed above my expectations. As you can see there was no damage to the point. It broke a rib going in, broke a rib just behind the right shoulder, and stopped in the back of the shoulder. I was a little worried when I didn't get an exit hole on the off side because I had a high entry wound, but after seeing the wound I think the flint tips rip a larger hole than a razor sharp steel broadhead. The little buck bled well out of the top entry wound.

Jeff,
I hope you can make it next year. This was my fourth year in a row and this is a hunt I'll do annually without a doubt. Let me know once you decide and you can join our camp.

I killed two bucks this past Monday evening - the first time I've done a double on bucks with the bow. The seven pointer I recovered the next morning. I should have found him Monday because he only went about 50 yards - having two blood trails overlapping can make things confusing sometimes....These deer were taken during our gun season in a heavily gun hunted area which makes it even sweeter    :)    ...52lb. BW recurve, 160 grain Snuffers...Complete penetration on both.
Here's the first one - please don't laugh at the old blue shirt I'm wearing      :bigsmyl:     .

This is my first attempt at adding a photo.  Shot this buck in Kansas with a 45# Damon Howatt Hi-Speed.  I hurt my shoulder this fall and couldn't shoot any of my heavier bows so I borrowed this 45# bow from my son.  I found that 2018 shafts flew pretty well from it.  Used a STOS broadhead and got a pass-through.   Jim

I've had a good season thus far but haven't logged on here much.  This full-time job, part-time job, being dad, coach, husband "gig" is a tough one.  That and the fact that unless I do something frequently, I have to look up the directions all over again...which is the case now with my (in)ability to download pictures on this site.  Here goes:

Oct. 8 I was sitting on a center pivot in the middle of a 1/2-mi. circle of standing corn.  There's a 1/4-mi. swath of marshy grass maybe 30-50 yards wide that extends from about 3 o'clock on the east to the center pivot which also includes an overgrown access lane.  We had lots of rain from mid-summer on so the pivot didn't get much use and neither did the lane going in.

Anyway, I was sitting on the pivot because the evening before I'd been sitting on the second leg out and saw a bachelor group of bucks come out of the corn and start posturing/sparring, etc. near the pivot.  I got down and stalked to within 25 yards of all 5, the largest being a 110" 4x5 that was safe from me.  But it was cool being that close to five bucks acting fairly cocky.

Well the following evening I didn't see much at all but about sundown a nice 4x5 with decent mass and long brows came out back down by the 2nd pivot (maybe 80 yards away).  He eventually was likely to get downwind and/or cut my entry trail anyway so I figured I had nothing to lose by trying a stalk.  But it was really quiet, so I went a bunch of rows into the corn and then headed his direction, planning to come out on the second pivot track...(to be continued next post).

Here's a picture of me and my girls on an early season hunt from a buddy stand.  Sure enough a couple dink bucks showed up but no does...

Title: Re: Daily Hunt Pics and Stories 2007
Post by: Wary Buck on November 28, 2007, 05:00:00 PM
Dang, that picture came out big.  Hope it's not too big but I'm just a moron when it comes to pixels, etc.

...Anyway, it was way too quiet to be stalking and as I neared the second pivot track I knew the buck (if he was still there) had to know something was in the corn.  So I occasionally grunted and also began pulling on ears of corns like you might hear a feeding deer do.  But doing this at a slow pace meant I was running out of shooting light and by the time I reached the pivot track, I probably had 10 minutes left or so.  I was maybe 30 rows away from the grassy lane area (not the grassy knoll), and continued my strategy of trying to sound like a deer.  I was maybe 10 yards from the edge when I could see corn stalks moving maybe 4 yards away from me, just off the pivot track.  I froze, waited, pulled a corn ear, waited, and after maybe 60 seconds HE stepped into the pivot track but immediately bolted out into the grassy area.

I figured the gig was up, but that it was very cool to have been that close to a nice buck.  I tiptoed down the pivot track and I'll be darned if he hadn't stopped out there on the lane and was looking back to see just what the heck was still in the corn.  I was maybe 3-4 rows still from the edge, but there was a narrow gap and if I leaned forward and began my draw, the upperbowstring pulled back an obstruction and I lined up and let her go.

Definitely heard what sounded like a good hit.  Blood found on the site, 60 yards later I'm standing over a fairly heavy and gnarly 127"ish 4x5.  All my kills are memorable, but this was one that will be hard to forget.

Pronghorn longbow, Woodsman head, Sitka Gear...

All this is in Nebraska by the way, along the Platte River bottom or in some bluffs overlooking the same.

Also had a couple lucky encounters with turkeys.  First one was Oct. 29 as I was sneaking into my deer stand I surprised a group of four toms and drilled this guy in the back as they departed.  Guessing he was about 18 lbs.  Same gear as before, Pronghorn longbow, Woodsman head, Sitka Gear.

Then on Thanksgiving Day, as the post-feast BSing began to slow down, I decided a quick 90-minute hunt (trying for a doe) was better than a nap and lucked out on an 18.6 lb. tom with two beards from my tree stand.

Still at it on my second buck tag but not overly optimistic.  Have some doe-killing to do as well with one month to go.

One last picture some of you may find interesting.  This is the view from my 'stand' on the center pivot maybe 45 minutes before I got the nice buck 80 yards back behind me.  I'm guessing the shot ended up being about 18 yards.

Post by: Wary Buck on November 29, 2007, 08:50:00 AM
As for the bow "floating"--that's just the magic of Herb Meland's bows!  Okay, there was a place on the center pivot that allowed me to prop my bow up that way.  Not too many hooks up there on the pivot and yet I have to find a place to tie my safety belt to, hang a video camera, hang my pack, hang my quiver, and ideally hang my bow.  Sometimes I end up being rather resourceful.  I did end up getting some video of my buck before I got down and stalked him.

Sitka in the cold?  I just add a layer of Winona between the inner layers and the vest/90% jacket on the outside.  The 90% coat is VERY quiet and its slender design makes for a sleek bow arm (some don't even use an arm guard).  I'm hopeful for a Sitka insulative layer maybe by next year.

My brother David (Whitey the editor of Primal Dreams) took this buck on our land. He filmed him two years ago, I found his shed this past spring, and also filmed him in velvet this past summer. About 24 inches wide inside. It was a perfect heart shot at 12 yards using the Schafer bow he bought from Joe Lasch at Comptons. Buck was 5 1/2 years old. It came in following a doe. 215 # field dressed.

My brother David took the buck from my stand. His comments were, "Nicely sweet!"

I took this coyote out of the same tree about 3 weeks later. He came by moving some deer, looked at me, then coninued past on a trot at 17 yards. The lung shot resulted in the first animal I took with this bow I made for myself.

Nice work, Mitten boys.  Sunday AM here in Nebraska there was a 1/4" ice on everything, and then just before daybreak the snow came.  Tons of waterfowl on the river, at times the cresendo was so loud it was hard to think.  Canadians cornshucking just over treetop level even spooked a couple does big time (they were already wired because of the ice dropping from the trees as the wind picked up).  It was a gorgeous morning to be on stand and when this big doe came filtering through the Platte River bottom timber, it was time to fill one of my antlerless tags.  11 yard heart shot, 45 yard recovery, Pronghorn longbow, Woodsman head, Sitka Gear.

just a little weather contrast from where warybuck and I were hunting this past weekend. that looks painfully cold.. nice shooting WB and a tasty reward.

it was perfect weather on the georgia coast

A day to get in touch with the past.  While I was dragging out a deer I had taken with a homemade broadhead, I found a very unusual arrowhead.  It has two perfect notches on one side.  There purpose I have know idea.  What would we give to know the story behind the arrowheads we find?

Here's a doe I took yesterday afternoon - 52 lb. Black Widow recurve, Snuffer 160 broadhead. Ten yard shot hit high in the shoulder angling down into the goodies. She went about 40 yards.

Antlerless tag No. 2 filled Dec. 4 along the Platte River in Dodge Co. 9 yd. heart/lung shot (barely, just a hair low and left of where I wanted to be), Pronghorn longbow, Woodsman head, Sitka Gear. My first three deer have been shared by six fellow teachers.

But remind me not to kill does on weekday evenings next time.  I knew that, but this one was too big to pass up.

We've had two snows, both less than an inch, and they both lasted about 36-48 hours before melting off.  There's talk of some more maybe tonight/tomorrow.  Hopefully tonight because that could mean a SNOW DAY (no school) and then I could get back out there.

We had exactly ONE DAY of snow all last year in eastern Nebraska during bow season.  And it was Dec. 31--the last day of the season.  Would've felt guilty not hunting the last day of the season, so went out and stalked and killed a doe at last light in a picked bean field (okay, there was a waterway/cane strip down the middle that I used as cover) wearing snow camo.  Killing does can be as exciting as you want to make it!

Hey Andy, thanks. that hog on your profile is quite a specimen. I was out for a week and it was an awesome adventure.
I ended up with a good size list made up of both things I should have left at home and things that I should have brought.  I had wonderful camp sites, caught trout for supper, & made some wonderful new friends that made my trip a lot less hardcore by giving me GREAT food.
I climbed up 15' into live oak tree and shot the hog while straddling a limb in a yoga position. And lured them to my tree by smaking bits of bark on the palmettos around my tree. They eventually couldnt resist it.
(who needs a treestand right?)
bryce... I just read your article in TBM, good job!

Hello all, I thought I would share the results of my very first "Traditional" bowhunt this past season even though I'm mostly just a habitual lurker here I have learned a lot in the last year or so.

This buck (My biggest to date) was a long time coming for me here in the hard hunted woods of PA and to take it with the very first shot from my recurve on the very first day I ever carried it into the woods .....is something I will not soon forget!

I guess I'm one of those odd guys who can embrace both ends of the technology spectrum as a rep for a major compound manufacturer.(shhhh     ;)    )
I bought this bow (what amounts to my dream bow for many many years) right here on the Tradgang.com classifieds in March of this year and felt there might be a little karma from the start.

I guess I was right, and after months of serious hard practice and devoting the entire archery season to stick and string (knowing full well I would be limiting my shots and might pass routine compound opportunities), I was rewarded with the trophy of a lifetime.

Thanks for allowing me to share.

The buck scores 149 5/8" gross as a 13pt (busted G2 on his left side or he'd probably break 155")and sports a 21" inside spread.
The bow is a 62# Black Widow SA V , and I used a 220gr Muzzy Phantom on a GT Traditional to make the 23yard shot.

If anyone is wondering about the buck's eyes: He died with his head pressed against that log which closed his left eye, and his right has a ring of warty tumors encircling it. I said he was big I didn't say he was pretty.    :D

I'd probably be smiling even bigger if I didn't almost knock my left eye out recovering him in that thick brush.   :knothead:  (You can see the blood in the corner) LOL

It was funny, when I told my friends that I was going to hunt the entire PA season with my recurve some of them asked the question "So what are you going to do when a Giant buck walks out and you wish you had your compound?"

I guess now we know.   :bigsmyl:

It's an old Buddy & Jim 21st Century bow.  I also shoot a Dave Dowell bow which is quieter and faster, but I have so much faith in my old 21st Century that I hunt with it most of the time.  It originally was 71#, but now after being shot almost daily for years and being refinished, it is down to 64#.  I wish it was a little less.

Well,we saw lots of deer today, and a coyote.I had so many deer around me at one point,I didn't know which way to look.A bunch ran up from behind me,I picked one out and shot,but...PLUNK..the arrow went behind the deer and stuck in the dirt. A lot of arrows were launched today, but only one deer killed,a nice doe,and a bunch of misses.I personally heard two different trees get whacked...   :campfire:

That is an awesome story Bill.  I hunted this year for the first week and only saw does.  Here in Nova Scoita you have to be drawn for an "anterless deer" tag.  So I could only let them go.  That was an good thing you did by giving that meat to someone who really needed it.  Great job.  Awesome act of generosity.  Please keep in touch.

You bet.A little story about that doe. Two does came out of the brush from my right at about twelve yards.I was going to pick the bigger one to shoot, but realized the guy that wanted to give the deer away, was just up from me.

These were the only deer I saw walking. The first doe was heading right to the other guy,Mike,so I let it walk and was getting ready to shoot the second one.Just then the first doe stopped right in front of Mike at about 15 yards.

Whack,he drills this doe,and I see the arrow blow through. Of course this spooked the deer I was going to shoot, but I had a good feeling because I knew Mike had the deer he needed.

I've got a little story for ya.

About the second week of the deer season this year i relocated my stand next to the top of the mountain. I went up there the next day and sat till 0830hrs and decided to get down because that stand kills my back. I went to the very top of the mountain," which is national forest that boarders my property" I walked about 250yds or so once i was on the top where the landscape is gently rolling and wider than a football field.

I noticed a rub line as walked out the top traveling north and saw something of in front of me about 100yds. It was a nice little buck feeding in a little hollow. I watched him for about 15mins and then lost sight of him. I got my leupolds out and started looking for him in hopes he'd travel my way. I found him about 20mins later,WALKING RIGHT TO ME! I ducked down and crawled to an oak tree that three poeple couldn't reach around. I watched him off to the left side aproaching me at 25yds..
I was already on my knee's and lost him again. I then guessed him to come around the right side of the tree, I was right! His head popped out 5yds from me and as he stepped out from behind the tree i didn't even make it to full draw!
Upon my release the zwiky eskamo tipped 3555GT went through both lungs! I watched him run back the way he came and go over the step side of the mountain on our farm.
I walked to the edge and jumped him up! D%#^@, That was a rookie thing for me to do, but after watching the shot i felt he was down. I went back and went down the trail and found him strait down 40yds from where i'd last seen him last.
I've shot deer from a tree stand almost that close but this was a first for me on the ground from five yds.
I used a SA11 46#@28" 58" bow.
Oh, he was a five pointer.  :campfire:    :archer:

Hello, all! Well after two years of bow hunting with my Recurve from Bayou Buck Bows, I finally connected. Part of the remarkable thing is that my son, who is standing next to me, was with me when I double lunged this little doe at 15 yards. Yeah Me!!!   (http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=113897997&albumID=1462462&imageID=17139672)
