The date is set for Monday of next week for a shoot out at Denny Sturgis's home range. That's Widow country down there and there's some pretty darn good shots shooting those legendary Black Widows. :scared:
But as everyone knows, Shrews are notorious for eating spiders, so I'm going down there full of confidence that I'll be bringing back some Widow scalps.
What I need to know is, how do you scalp a Widow??? ;)
-
Buy one from Dal Lowery, turn around and re-sell for $100 profit.
Plenty of buzzards hang out in the trees around Lowery.
:p
-
Just take your "Bug" spray with you! HeHeHe Good luck Ron.......O.L.
-
What I need to know is, how do you scalp a Widow???
Grab her wig and run?
-
I don't think that little shrew has ever ran across a spider as mean and nasty as a Black Widow. I'ld be careful, you might even get bit and there ain't no cure for it. Next thing you know, you wake up with 3 of 'um in your closet. And searching around for Dal to post again so you can have that 4th one cheap too. LOL
-
Wow, that's pretty brave taking on someone with "home course advantage".
-
How about kill stickers like fighter pilots.
Make the looser autograph your sticker when you put it on your bow.

Huh, must have pulled both triggers again.
-
Ron, To scalp a Widow correctly you take its soul, "the string" But most will not play for that. It is suposed to be friendly. I'd shoot for an arrow. Not just any junk arrow, a hunting arrow and a trophy you can keep to remember the good time you had scalping the Widow. This past weekend at the randevous my Shrew put a hurting on some Widows but it was all in good fun. Which it should be.

Rid the market of all shafts that are 80# spine and more.
That should take care of most of 'em. :bigsmyl:
-
Shrew vs Spider?? This should be good!! I love both, but my money is on the "Ice Man" and his mean Shrew. Good luck to all and have fun! Can't wait to hear the results of this shoot off.......Raven
-
The real question is how do you cook a widow after you've bagged it? Mebee them Spideys know the recipe, after all its the same one they'll use for crow... :saywhat:
J-boy
-
Ron, I find this works...usually. "Say Denny! I noticed a little gap there in the inside lam, next to the riser when you draw...I guess that doesn't affect the bow in any way...Eh?"
Good luck, Goerge
-
Ron, the male widows are virtually harmless, the females are the ones you need to look out for. Home field advantage should not make a difference, your still shooting for a spot. Good luck, and have great fun.
-
Shrew vs. Widow
Matt Dillon vs. John Wayne
Arnold Palmer vs. Jack Nicholas
Bush vs. Kerry :knothead:
Ah yes, the short list of tough choices.
-
Ron,, That Denny is a pretty husky fellow. Take full advantage of the situation. Eat plenty of beans and onions and drink lots of beer. Pass gas every time he is downwind. Belch while he is at full draw. Take a piece of toilet paper and put some peanut butter on it. Smear it on his bow and let him see you do it. He won't keep the same grip. If all else fails kick him in the ba**s and run. You must win at all cost. This may be fun but the Pride of Shrewland rides on your shoulders.
My vote goes to The Shrew.
-
Last time we saw a shrew on the farm it was hanging in a spider web with all of the juice sucked out of it. :)
-
Hehehe..........I'm loving this thread. All the good-natured razzing trad folks should sling at each other without the Crap found eleswhere. :D Looking forward to hearing the results of this little skirmish..... TL
PS....Notice the bow lying next to the dead bear and the handsome bowhunter....
-
I am not going to get in the middle of this Ron. But if you happen to see an Osage Widow with my name one it would you tell them to hurry it up. Eight weeks and counting
RonL ;)
-
Lol love the above-teh shrewland....You must fight for the shrewland! sounds like a german war cry lol. My moneys on the shrew!
-
Denny, that Shrew you saw hanging on the spider web was just waiting for his next meal...another spider. :p
according to my study of Shrews, one of their main food sources is spiders. They particularly love Black Widows...they taste like "chicken" :bigsmyl:
-
Good luck Ron. Hope your in the zone!!! Later, Harry
-
It's usually not the bow but the man behind it. Be weary of a man that only owns one bow 'cause he is probably damn good with it> I'd love to be there to watch this unfold. :notworthy: :notworthy:
-
"Toilet paper & peanut butter..."
ROTFLMAO!!!!
-
Ron
I had a widow once it wasn't bad but now I have my Shrew and it is awesome. I have to say I really love the SS Shrew that was donated to the Compton shoot. I may be a little late but man you really outdid yourself. I wish I could own that bow. I've been putting a good hurting on the Widows, Morrison Cougars, and anything else that has come against me here in the Midwest. I do have a little trouble with my brother's Horne Combo hunter from time to time. But so far this year I have won the most 3D shoots and Novelty shoots. If you don't beat the Widows I will be severly disappointed. I might even need some therapy and counseling. And you can bet your new predator call (the one with the decoy option) that I will find you within the next year and find out first hand what the h%ll went wrong. So eat well, get plenty of rest, take your vitamins and say your prayers. You will need all of these to take out those darn spiders. If you don't succeed I want to interview for a chance to get some revenge. Just remember I asked first and I will be more than happy to come and see you for the interview to see if I might be worthy. I suggest you do what most people would do and stop talking and be humble. Let the likes your your loyal Shrew followers take over. We should be able to handle it from here. You just focus and we will sling the good natured BS back and forth. I'm with Sparta-T, I love good natured razzing back and forth. It makes life so much more interesting. Before you know it we could have a shoot with the boys from Widowland vs the men from Shrewland. [For all of you who don't know this is a innocent joke no offense is intended, and I can only say this now that Ken Beck has sold Black Widow because I respect him so much.] A national event held at the best randevous anyone has ever been to. With matching bows and custom knives for every novelty shoot and the best barbeque anyone has ever tasted. Sorry I carried on it gets real boring here in Nebraska. Good thing I'm heading back home to Montana for the 4th of July. I'm going stir crazy. My wife said she can tell that I haven't been back home to visit in a while. I've went a few months longer than I normally do. Any way good luck and shoot straight.

Ron go feed that Shrew real good. You should be able to fatten it up around all them spiders. :D
-
We added a new twist to the range last night. Its called the mini polar bear back-shot through the brush gauntlet shot.
We oiled up the running javelina target. Ron said it was too slow for him last time.
Ron, Found your arrow you lost on the 55 yard elk shot. Only problem was I found it after a mower blade snapped it. Oh, I just remembered I already told you that. LOL :bigsmyl:
-
One more thing- new range rule: NO PEANUT BUTTER ALLOWED ON RANGE!
-
Ron - do you think Ray has a recipe for Widow-Kabobs?
-
Don't worry Denny, I wouldn't stoop to such a low trick as peanut butter. I'm not going to play mind games with you, really I'm not. You'll have enough to worry about just knowing that EVERY BLACK WIDOW FAN IN THE COUNTRY IS COUNTING ON YOU!
Roger, Ray has a recipe for everything, including humble pie. He may have to make one up for me after this is over. ;)
-
Roger, I don't know much about cooking up a spider in a tuxedo, however I like your idea of Widow Kabobs.
I can't think of a better use for a widow bow than to whittle it down into kabob skewers and use it to make some grilled venison kabobs with a tomato based sauce. :bigsmyl:
As far as humble pie, I'll have to go down in the old file room and dust off that recipe. They may not make some of the ingredients anymore for the recipe I used to use. ;)
-
When you hear the jingle of spurs and smell the sweet cachet of oft oiled leather, you'll know the "Kid" has arrived. (Insert Whistle from the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly)
Have bow...will travel.

P.S.
Ron, don't forget to wear your Super Shrew T-shirt! :readit:
Good mojo.
-
Ron, Don't be afraid to have a stick under your foot and as Denny reaches full draw step down on it and snap it. This is fair play. You could ask him what that snap was. He won't be able to concentrate a bit. He WILL loose all the good mojo he feels for his Widow.
Now being the good sport and great sportsman you are you could also offer him a new S.S. Gold with a 5% discount and a custom tee shirt that says "Ron LaClair took me to school and I flunked". Lets cut the tail off the tee shirt also. :notworthy:
-
I think someone should video this. I'm sure a lot of people would like to see it. Put me on the list if someone does.

Ron & Denny: I dont shoot a shrew or a widow but it should be alot of fun, maybe you could video it, post it in the video clips. Good luck to both of you. I personaly think ron will win if his video clips or norm for his shooting ability. Jeff Hren. See ya both at Comptons. :bigsmyl:
-
You guys are killing me. I've never met either one of you guys but what I love about TRAD is just this sort of attitude. Competetiveness with alot of fun involved. Have a blast!! Wish I could see this!! Heck I'm even crazy enough to shoot with you guys to learn some stuff. Keith
-
Denny you got to wooop da paints off him. All us BW Boys know that you got a leg up by just shooting a Widow. Shouldn't be to hard, just point it in the general direction and she'll naturally hit bulls eye.
-
My 2 best lines when in competition against another shooter, best uttered when your competitor is at full draw:
1. "Whats that cracking sound?"
2. "When did your wife et those implants?"
Both guaranteed to wreck a mans focus!!!!
-
Roger,
Knowing Ron as I do, he's going to want to just give that young widder shooter a straight up whuppin', no tricks or gimmicks. ;)
Ron,
I got your e-mail. Yes, Tim K. still has the remote control f*rt machine and he'll have it shipped to you by Monday. :D
-
This is gonna be a classic!!
-
give it to 'em Denny! Hook in son,....... my ol man use to tell me that!
Any more on your trip down under?
Good Luck and " Use the force Luke!"
-
Alan, I know I'm coming next Spring, but haven't worked out the details yet. I'll let you know as soon as I do.
Mosquitos coming on so I sprayed the range tonight. Even sprayed behind the targets in case someone shrews UH, I mean shanks an arrow. Pee Wee mowed the range. John fixed up a couple new targets. We are ready for Monday.
Ron, You might as well bring Brian with you; we might need some comic relief :)
Dad is trying to get through his transitional stage before Monday.
-
You want me to bring Brian, the "Samurai Kid"? ;) Ok I'll bring him if I can.
Your dad should be used to going through transitional stages by now, don't you think?
So have you got all the targets paced off and your little white aiming stones laid out? I'm assuming that's why you had Pee Wee mow the range. :D
-
Ron,The best way Ive found to scalp my friends widows,is to smack them with my DWYER. have fun!
-
If Denny wins I think Ron should get a hair cut like his 8>)
-
Ron, the "Samurai Kid" is wecome, but he might have to shove a sword in his guts to have any honor left after the shooting. Either that or get out that Osage SA for round 2. :)
I think Dad should be used to those transitional stages also!
No white aiming stones allowed. This will be a straight up competition. Non Wesley rules.
Doug R, I've come to appreciate a nice thick head of hair after losing most of mine. It would be a shame to have Ron lose that thick shock of hair. Besides that it might not grow back.
-
Denny, too bad you don't have your pony tail anymore, that would have make a good scalp lock to hang on my quiver. :bigsmyl:
-
If osage works like Hickory on the grill, tell that B.C. "kid" to bring along the curved osage spider too. We can have PL3 skewers and osage smoke venison kabobs. :scared:
On second thought, I put away that humble pie recipe after I got my Super Shrew Samurai a few years back.I haven't needed it since. ;)
-
Why is this starting to sound like the cage match in the Spiderman movie??? :readit: TL
-
Hey Spider-T,
Glad to hear you're walking around again. Here's a fun little question for ya:
Let's say you were invited to shoot along in this fun little competition and it was a month and a half later. Would it be the spider bow or the Quest?? ( :p , just hootin' on ya a little, feel free to take the fifth)
Have fun in Alaska.
-
I wondered if that 'quest'ion would crop up in this friendly little discussion........ :p I have to take the fifth at this point because it is moot until I have a little time with the Brack in hand. The test bow meshed very well with my form and tuned easily with my regular arrows, so I am anticipating the same with the custom job.
As they say bro.......time will tell. TL
-
Hey, I'm just goin' along for a chance to hang out with Denny Sr. He knows more about (new) bows than anyone on the planet. Didn't think this was going to turn into the archery version of "The Quick and the Dead!" :-)
My peanut loving brother: I will bring short sword; but only to hack off a chunka' sharp Pinconning. Figure I'll need it as a plug, seeing as how uncle Ron is cooking up a big iron skillet of bacon and beans for breakfast...
The Samurai Kid
Have bow...will travel.
-
Hey bc, what happened to the "Samurai Kid", the jingle of spurs, the sweet smell of oiled leather, strutin to the tune of "The good, the bad, and the ugly"? Are you startin to crawfish on me?
This ain't "The Quick and the Dead", it's "The Shootout at the DS Corral" :bigsmyl:
-
Ron,
Try asking Denny if he inhales or exhales while releasing his arrow. I had someone do this to me while golfing, has a tendency to mess with the mind.
-
Sparta, You might as well limp over Monday; We can kick your butt too! :)
leroy hunter, No sweat, breath controll is part of the seminar Ron and I are giving at Compton.
Brian, Do you still have your ponytail? I'd love to get that; even though it looks more like a turkey's beard.
-
We’ll it sounds like this is going to be a knock down drag out battle. Two top bows and shooters going at it on the range. Since Sparta "Quest" :D doesn't have his feet quite under him, the only thing that would cap this off would be to add Terry Green shooting a Morrison and Lance Coleman shooting a Brackenbury Quest. Then we’d have all the heavyweights duking it out "at the DS Coral". :notworthy:
-
OUCH!!!!...Brian...er Sammy Kid, are you gonna take that??? I'd say someone needs a Widdow whippin.
-
Denny, the last time I saw Brian his ponytail was half way down his back. Maybe you can get him to wager it???
-
Now Ron, I respect a guys right to tag along (albeit in a skirt :D ) so he can talk bows with Denny Sr. and not be worried about loosing his tail (literally). In fact, I used to own a Robertson longbow that you sold to me on consignment for Denny Sr. way back at a GLLI in Marshall (when we all had more hair!).
Have fun guys! I'll be waiting for pictures from Ron's digital.
-
Tell you what brother Denny, I'll wager the full length of my ponytail against one of your arras. One target, one arra. You pick the shot :-)
tsk
-
Hmmmm, now we're talking :saywhat:
-
Terry, Grab Lance, jump on a plane and we'll pick you up in Kalamazoo or South Bend. I'll let you have Brian's turkey beard. Bring some pink bowhush and we'll glue it on Brian's head.
I've always tried to be a gentleman on here. It's kind of fun being a jerk! :)
-
Ron Ought not be too awful hard to beat a bow wiyh it's Limbs screwd on backwards!LOL
-
Ron, It will take more than all of them togather to get into your head. Sticks and stones may break your bones but Denny will never out shoot you.
-
I'd best re-phrase that...don't want to get caught up in this mess....just wanna witness. ;)

Denny--Thanks for the invite, but I have a lot to do this week in preparation for our trip next weekend. Being off my feet for almost 5 weeks left me with a LOT of yardwork and stuff to catch up with before we travel. The pool still has the winter cover on it and that is not going to bode well if it gets into the 80's as they are predicting this week.
I'm back on two feet, but moving s-l-o-w right now. I'll have to learn you how to shoot proper some other time. Sure thing BC won't be teaching you much........ ;) :p Uncle Ron may be a handful, but he has sensitive knees..... TL
-
I hope you guys don't go into "quick draw" mode, I was hoping both of you would be breathing/standing for the shooting seminar at Compton. Maybe you fellows should have a rematch under the lights there with the aerials. Ron, I don't think Denny could hang with you on the "Saco Speed Round" ala Fred Trost.
Ray Lyon are you heading down for Compton?
-
Brother Denny, you're too nice to be a jerk.
Besides it's funny when you type with your tink accent!
Sparta, long time no yack. Hope you're healing well. Prayers.
bc
-
Hey B--Good to see you posting a bit. Healing is coming along nicely, but the prayer support is always appreciated. How is life with you, bro?
So I take it that you are flinging 'em with a Shrew these days and not the banana colored Widder??? As Denny Sr has modeled so well for us, sometimes its nice to branch out and see what else is out there. Seems like he always ends up with a spider though....... :p TL
-
Hey Ron are you going to bring that sun dried piece of your finger for good luck? Just grind it up and sprinkle a little finger dust at each target gauranteed to work! You know we never got those stains out, that shrew juice must be good!
Stephen Lathrop
-
Stephen, LOL
This is a copy of an E-mail I just received from the Shrewmeister.
Denny,
I called your Dad this morning. I thought I might be able to help him with his current shooting problems. He said he was using a clicker and I said that's good if you're having target panic but I didn't think clickers were allowed and I would check in the rules. Brian is bringing a copy with him in the morning.
Also do you have score cards? If not I'll have to bring some. We'll need them because people will want to know our scores. Of coarse this will not be as informal as the last time I was down there. This will be a one shot at each target compitition, very serious, no talking or other noise distractions while a person is shooting.
I hope you've got your arrows flying better than the last time, I noticed they were a little logy. Maybe you've got them weighted to heavy in the front?
Good luck to you tomorrow, and remember, winning isn't everything. It's also important to be a good loser.
Ron
-
Howdy Tom. Like uncle Gene says, (paraphased) "my bows are like my friends. I try to spend time with each of them."
Life and biz are blessed and highly favored!
bc

See you tomorrow Brian.
-
You surprise me Denny, posting a private email that I sent to you. I think you're taking your new role a little too serious.
Ok then, no more Mr. nice guy, I'm done talking. I'll let my arrows do my talkin tomorrow!
As John Wayne said to Ned Pepper in the movie Rooster Cogburn,.... just before he took the reins in his mouth,....FILL YOUR HAND YOU BLANKITY BLANK!!!

Come on monday :bigsmyl: Man, I can harldy stand the wait for the out come. This is better than any Super bowl :D Good luck to you both and may the best shooter win.....Raven  :notworthy: :notworthy:

now that is ugly --- herb ;) sure wished i could be sitting on a log and watching , what a show
-
Hey Denny, you could gaurantee a win if you guys would pull the old EXLAX candy bar trick! You and your Dad picture this. Half way through the shoot old Ron steps up to the target, his belly growls & groans, you say to yourself its finaly working, man this guys got a cast iron stomach! He starts his draw his arms are shaking, the beads of sweat are rolling and he lets her RIPPPPPPP!!!!!
-
Hmmm, that's the strangest lookin Black Widow I've ever seen. I can see the rubber seam marks on the side from the mold. :bigsmyl:
-
The seams are busting out because it is so full of shrew meat.
Things are REALLY REALLY looking good!

If those were live Shrews and that was a real spider, there wouldn't be enough of him left to take pictures of, Just some black fuzz and a grease spot.
I hope you're in bed youngster cuz you're gonna need all the rest you can get tonight. I'm gonna work you like a rented Mule tomorrow. :p
-
I hear all the talk, now how about the specs. on the bows you guys will be shooting. Length, #age, etc. This should be good, I cannot wait for the results! Shawn
-
Oh Ron PLEASE let me bring some peanut butter.Have you ate your beans today.I hope so Denny needs to smell them.LOL Give them hell Ron.
-
Man o man that's one bad mammajamma spyder Denny! I mean I was just noticing that sucker has markings on the top of It's abdomen that means double trouble!
Thanks guys for giving us PacNorWesters a good thread to read since we're on the other side of the world up here. I'm remaining neutral since I have'nt shot either of the bows mentioned yet!
Good luck to the both of your camps.
Out for now
-
Ron ,Don't worry that was a beaver not a Shrew. And i think it was a tarrantula!
-
Hey Denny those are some fine pictures. What do you do when a "shrew" comes for you, call "Black Widow"!!!! Have fun, this has been great!!
-
I think I heard the death moan of a Black Widow this morning when I came out of the coffee shop, even though it's several hundred miles to the "DS Corral".

The battle is over. The Black Widows crawled back in their holes licking their wounds. :readit:

Yahoo, spider kabobs for all shrew shooters! Good job Ron. I heard a rumour you arived playing Vagner's Ride of the Valkry! just like the helicopter gunships did in Apocolypse now! later, Harry
-
Good Job Ron. It was fun to watch this progress. Congrates to Denny also. Not many would have the nerve to go against a Shrew.
-
Concrats to the Ice Man  I'am sure it was no easy task. I guess the Widow ate to much before dinner
-
It sounds like everyone had a good time and it will be fun to see pictures. :readit: :D

We had a great time shooting with old friends and the scores were very close. In fact at half time after 16 targets, Denny, Denny Sr. and Brian were tied. I was trailing by 5 points so I knew I had to buckle down on the final round.
After all was said and done we ended up,... 1st Ron, 2nd Denny Jr, 3rd Brian Cole, 4th Denny Sr.
Dennys 14 year old son John shooting his BW recurve kept up with the big boys and shot very well. It won't be long and he'll be whiping his dad.
Denny weighed everyones arrows and will post details on equiptment.
-
Thank the Lord! Team Shrew comes through again!!!!!!
-
Hey, it was a Japanese ending; close enough for all to call it an honorable tie.
Pics and movies to follow.
bc
-
I'm wonderin' about that adage of "old age and treachery..." :D
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! It was horrible; the pressure and yes the treachery and mind games. To have it boil down to one arrow was too much. We demand a rematch in the near future. ;^)
-
Horrible???, heck I had fun. As for pressure and mind games, all I did was whip out a pad and pen to keep score. :scared: It was like flashing a cross at a vampire. Big D and little D get real nervous when they have to shoot for score. :saywhat:
Rematch??? anytime my friend.
-
Dis reminds me of a shoot I was one time. There was a hot shooter there named Ted (left hander he was). He was shoot'n up a storm with some hot shot target recurve and I was shooting a hunting recurve. I popped off that "heck fire I could beat him with a bow like his".....bad mistake. He challenged me to a shoot out with my right handed bow and remember he was a lefty. well ya guessed it he beat me wrong handed with my own bow... From then on I figured out it might not be the bow :)
Rusty
-
and to keep my dang mouth shut!
Rusty

I just shot around the range again. Ron, I don't know how to sat this in a nice way.......You give me TARGET PANIC! :)
Brian showed up clean- cut; no pony tail; I think this also effected my shooting.
Gear used in ill-fated match:
Ron. 58" Bamboo Samurai Bevel lock 54# @ 27". Carbonwood 3000; 591 grains with 250 grain points.
Brian. 58" Samurai 55# @ 26. Cedar shafts by Elite Arrows (Paul Jalon) 493 grains for parralel and 533 grains for the barrel tapered. Brian shot a mixed bag.
John. 58" PSA2 50# @ 28". CX 100's 473 grains with 250 grain points.
Denny Sr. 60" PLX osage prototype 55# @ 28". Easton Excell 500 with 250 grain points.
Denny Jr. 62" plx OSAGE 68# @ 28" Draw length varied during THIS round.CX Heritage 250 640 grains with 250 grain points.
-
Denny, sounds like you may need some BW reinforcements in the future!!!!! ;) ron
-
Sounds like Denny needs a new S.S. Gold to me. Just think Denny you could be shooting a Shrew! Then you might win next time. Good show men and thanks for posting everything about it.
-
Thanks guys,It has been a riot to watch this post, congrats to all the shooters sounds like a close match. As far as a rematch how about thursday the 17th at the berrian springs sportsmans club?? It would be great to watch. :bigsmyl:
-
Thanks a lot to all of you for posting this episode of a great match between great shooters having a great time. I thought of you guys through out my working day and congradulations Ron on your victory. Denny I'm glad to see you ready to go at it again, I know that PLX is up to the task and I'm sure you will be too. I would have loved to have seen all of you shoot!!!
-
Yes,this has been fun to watch. Years ago, I used to travel down to Ron's neck of the woods and our good buddy Greg Nicolaou would join us at a local club and we'd shoot through the course, 1 pt per target. The banter and laughter of a friendly competition is good medicine for the soul.
While this was fun to hoot on fellow archers a little bit, to me it's a reminder of how much fun shooting a bow and arrow can really be.
P.S.
Shrews Rule! :D
