Tarz had a great idea with the hunt story thread. Id like to start a daily hunt pics thread. One submission of somthing on your hunt. The pic must be from your hunt!
I'll start with this pic I took on this mornings hunt. With recent rains the pigs stay muddy. They like to use certain trees to scratch their muddy back-side. Enjoy! I can't wait to see your hunt pics! CK

I snaped this shot yesterday on a afternoon hunt. I rode my mt bike a couple miles in on a closed road then hiked a mile up to this edge to glass. The sun is starting down and I thought it made the canyon look cool. I'm gonna try to figure out a way over to the far top. Theres a canyon in between. No bulls bugling but lots of fresh rubs. New country for me.

Last week I blew a couple of stalks on pigs at Mike Brown's (MEB) place but I got a pic of a nice snake that Mike killed with a judo shot right in the head. He don't like snakes. Note the snake boots and distance from body that snake is being held. Dang it was hot...About 95 degrees.. :bigsmyl:

Best idea for a thread ever! Please keep it going. I will add to it next weekend. I keep a small dig cam with me. There is always some sort of magic to capture. Sharing it here, we all get to go along on with each other.
Love the elk country pic. Lived in Montana for a little while, hope to settle there.

Just don't let this thread replace the "Highlights 2004" forum. Pics of you hunt are great....this will be fun...but don't forget to post your 'hero pics' on the Highlights forum.

Hey Ken,
How'd the sheep hunt go?
Congrats on the moose...I had one shot out from under me this morning. So much for the easy cow tag hunt in the management area eh LOL. If ya know of one hanging around let me know. Also do you still have the legs from the knees down? If not could ya get them for me or let me know where they are at. 458-0398

Well it was a great morning to be out even if I didn't kill the big boy!! See daily hunt stories. That mountain in the back ground is where I was headed. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/gotahunt/100_0916.jpg)

Santiam, that pack horse you got in camp would get shot down here in Texas. Better put a blaze orange vest on that sucker. What the heck is it? :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: .....Van

This was a great hunt and since the story is a little long, I'll post the pictures after the story.
Friday September 17, 2004
As planned, I arrived at Gregg Gravois's house boat in time to make a evening hog hunt. Gregg and Todd Gustin was there when I arrived. We loaded up and drove the 30 miles to the boat landing. From there it was a 15 minute boat ride to the island that Gregg had decided we would hunt. We are all hunting with traditional bows made by Tim Mullins of Acadian Woods Bows, from Slidell, Louisiana. This is spot and stalk hunting at it's best.
There wasn't much time left to hunt. I was going to stay with Gregg and try to video a shot. Soon after Todd went his way Gregg spotted a hog and signaled to Todd. Todd was able to see it and started his stalk. I managed to briefly record the hog before he noticed Todd and left. We hunted until dark without seeing any more hogs.
Saturday September 18, 2004
We were up early this morning and Joe Carpenter with his Acadian Woods Recurve joined us for todays hunt. We arrived at the island at first light and dropped Todd and Joe off at the same location that the three of us had hunted yesterday evening. We wished them luck and went to another area. I was still wanting to get a video kill so I stayed with Gregg. The first quarter of a mile was so thick that it took all our effort just to get through it. When we broke out into more hunter friendly woods I got the camera out to video and it wouldn't record. After several tries I gave up and told Gregg that if I wasn't going to be able to record I might as well go off on my own. We could cover more ground and would both have a chance for a kill.
I made a big round and had seen lots of sign but no hogs. I was almost back to the boat when I heard Gregg calling to me. It took awhile to get to him but I found him with a big sow that we guess to be about 180 pounds. He had been dragging her, in the 90 degree weather and had over heated. I gave him some water and after resting he felt better. I finally figured out a way to make the video camera record and we did some show and tell. Gregg had spotted the hog laying on her side with several more around her. She was sleeping and he was able to stalk to less than 10 yards for a shot that proved to be perfect. She didn't travel far after the shot. This sow was his 7th bow killed hog of the year and the third one he had slipped on and shot while it was sleeping.
We decided that we would just field quarter it instead of dragging through the bad thicket. I had brought my ALICE pack for field quartering and packing but left it in the boat. Gregg always hunts with a bag for his gear and it would hold more than the little backpack I had. We just barely managed to get it all in his bag, for the pack out.
After we made it back to the boat we headed towards Joe and Todd. Using cell phones we learned that Joe had shot a big boar hog and hadn't found it. We found them and spent some time trying to find his hog but didn't come up with anything. We had about given up when Gregg called to us that he had found him.
The boar wasn't big, he was huge. A 300 pound plus animal. After pictures and video it was field quartering time again. This one took awhile. I couldn't believe how thick the hide was on this thing. It was a lot different than doing a deer, much harder. While Todd manned the video camera Joe and Gregg helped me get him in the bag. It was so hot we had to take turns on him as well as working together. We were all over heated. It was about a quarter of a mile pack out and we were glad to make it back to the boat. Of course since Joe had killed he did the packing and held up good under the weight of the four quarters and back straps.
After a good meal and some rest we were ready for a late evening hunt. Gregg decided to look for a new area. Once there Joe and Todd got out of the boat and Gregg and myself went to another spot and hunted until dark. I saw more sign than any place I had been but not hogs. When I got back to the boat Gregg told me he has seen a group of hogs but wasn't able to get a shot. He pointed out in the lake and said look at all the gators. They were everywhere I looked. We must have seen over 50 for the evening.
Joe called and let us know that Todd had kill a hog. His first traditional kill. We were all excited for him, he has been due. He has worked hard at it but hadn't been able to get everything right until this evening.
What a great day, three hogs for 4 hunters and we still had another morning to hunt. Hopefully I will connect and we will have a 100% reward for all our efforts.
Sunday September 19, 2004
We were all up early and look forward to a good hunt. For the first time on the hunt I was wearing my regular hunting hat, instead of a cap. I told them it was going to be different today because I would be wearing my kill hat. Little did I know what was going to happen.
This morning Gregg dropped Todd and I off where Todd had killed yesterday then took the boat to the place were Joe had killed. Todd and I split up and I headed towards the direction that I had seen all the sign, yesterday evening. I was still hunting towards the East, taking my time. I head a hog get up and move out of high grass. I held up for awhile to let things settle down before continuing on in the direction it had went. I found a slight ridge that ran between the marsh and a lake bed. It didn't take long before I could hear hogs in front of me. It sounded like they were moving towards me. I held up for awhile then move towards where I had heard them. It was quiet and I figured they were moving ahead of me and I hoped to catch up with them. A few hundred yards down the ridge it turned into wet swamp. I took a break then started back tracking.
On the way back I heard the hogs again and went to them. It didn't take long to spot one, then a couple of more. I was stalking in when a small pig saw me an spooked. The way it left made the other curious but they soon settled down and I continued my stalk. One of them was a big boar that was at least as large as the one Joe had killed yesterday. At one time I was within 12 yards but didn't have a shot because he was facing me and I didn't have a shooting lane between all the thick brush. He became aware of my presence and left with intimidating grunts. He stopped out on the ridge and I watched him for awhile before noticing a small hog coming straight towards me. I was patient and was able to take about a 8 yard shot that hit low in his right front shoulder while he was broadside. He squealed and ran hard. I held my ground and nocked another arrow.
While waiting to give him plenty of time to die I heard more hogs coming from the marsh. I must have been standing in their trail because a big hog was leading a smaller one straight towards me. She was inside of 10 yards closing when I raised my bow into position. She stopped at 7 yards, eyeballing me. As she slowly turned I started my draw and she was broadside when I touched anchor and released. The timing was good and the shot looked perfect.
After a 15 minute wait I found the second one I had shot. She had went about 40 yards and was a big sow that weighed around 200 pounds. I hung some toilet paper to mark her spot and went back to find the first one. I missed it on my first try but found him the next time. My first attempt to find him, I had actually walked within 10 feet of where he was and never saw him. He was a small boar that weighed around 60 pounds. He was in water so I drug him to higher ground on the ridge for pictures and video.
Todd answered my call and walked up as I was finishing up the video show and tell. He was just in time to join me before shutting the camera down. I wasn't sure if I could get both of these hogs in my bag for the pack out so he called Joe. They agreed to bring another bag to help get them out.
After bagging up the small one, Todd and I went to the big one and did more video and pictures. Gregg and Joe showed up just in time for the quartering. It wasn't a bad pack out with Gregg carrying a share of the load in his bag.
All in all it was an Acadian Woods Grand Slam. Five hogs for four hunters in a day and a half. Gregg mentioned that last weekend two hunting parties went to the same property with airboats, radios, guns and dogs and they only killed 4 hogs. I'm glad that I was with the traditional group. I had a great time. It was hard work but extremely rewarding. If there is another time, I'll be sure to start the hunt with the right hat. It works for me.
A special thanks to Gregg Gravois for the invitation, to hunt with him.

Went on a little scouting circle this morning looking for a good bull I seem to have misplaced and ran across this scene. There are six wolves dining on a buffalo calf carcass. Hmmmmm, I think I've caught a bass by that cypress knee with a red and white Lucky 13. Sure looks familiar :bigsmyl: :wavey: ....Van

Bob, That's pretty typical of South Louisiana. Lots and lots of bayous, lakes and water everywhere.
Van, Just before I took that picture a 10' gator was there on that point by the cypress knees. He went under before I could get the camera ready. I'm sure he would have equaled any fight you could have gotten from a bass.

Hello Van,

yep, that Gregg is one great hunter huh guys? He took me to that island a couple of years ago for a hunt. No shots but always a treat for sure.
You know the feeling when you meet someone who is such a serious hunter with a compound, you wonder why he isn't shooting stickbows? I talked him into it, made him some wooden arrows, he got a stickbow, and was off to the races, never looked back.
Ain't nothin better than a crawfish skiff, white shrimper boots, and hogs in the marsh! Louisiana style vacation! LOL

09-21-2004: My buddy had been talking to some loggers the day before and had seen a couple of deer feeding on edge of weedy pasture across the road on some other property we hunt. I went in the next day to see what they were feeding on and found a large oak on edge of pasture that was loaded with acorns and acorns all over the ground, with lots of deer sign. It was a little to thick around the oak to setup so I backtracked the main trail about 40 yards to a spot I could get some clear shots. Up the tree I went with my treesuit and about 6:05 p.m. here comes this here doe. I popped her at about 12 - 15 yards, she let out a bellow and tore off in a death run. Easy blood trail about 100 yards to dead deer. The 2016 aluminum arrow with a Simmons Interceptor 2 blade from the 50 lb. Iron Mtn longbow took the doe quartering away. You can see the entry wound in the pic-the arrow completely broke the opposite side leg bone in two as it exited. Good way to start the season!

Well Eric it wearn't easy, took several years and I'll never forget when she finally conceded. The Dixie Chicks had just come out with a new song and she gave me the CD as a suprise and highlighted one song called "Cowboy Take Me Away".

Well my first deer this year was this doe.I used a pair of climbers and loc-on stand to get back in a thick area I had wanted to hunt that was dropping a lot of acorns.Soon after climbing and hanging the stand in the morning I heard that unmistakable sound of acorns popping. :)
I could not locate the deer through the dense cover for a few minuites untill I finaly zeroed in on where the poping was comeing from. She made the mistake of stepping into a hole in the canopy at 19 steps.
The Adcock longbow and intercepters did the job they were meant to. ;) A high extrance and exit left a sparse blood trail and she ran a lot farther than she should have.I heard her fall but it still took a few to find her in the thick cutover.

Hey Tim, Forgot to ask you the other night - see any snakes? :)
Kids liked the pic of the wolf and the coyote story....5 feet away sniffing at your buddy's head...yeah right. :)
Hey it looks like someone left a 48" double barrel shotgun leaning up against that fence.
-
No Ken that's not a shotgun...and that's not the Phoenix zoo fence either. The coyote story is true! My buddy fell asleep 8 foot from me on the otherside of a large downed tree stump. I was standing watching a meadow and when I looked to my right there stood a coyote with it's nose under the log smelling my buddy. I reached for my bow and scared the heck out of the coyote who took off. Probably a good thing...I would have hated to miss him and hit my sleeping friend!

This is my redneck version of the Amerihouse Blind. I hunted out of this this evening. It is in a funnel on my place where game crosses. Nothing wanted to cooperate this evening. CK

She's a rock hound so I expect that what it is. That isn't the road in front of her but very loose clay type soil the nothing grows in because of the constant heaving. Apparently there is so much expansion and contraction when wet or dry it's constantly moving. Very interesting country and unbelievably greasy when it rains.

Heading out yesterday afternoon I had to circle up over what we call the Buffalo Jump with an incredible view up the valley. It was a little hazy but the fall colors are really starting to come in. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/gotahunt/ApurdyfalluptheWestBoulder.jpg)

A scary sharp Ribtek 145 waiting for some work in the Autumn Woods. He almost got it but the deer always seem to make the right moves :)

This thread is great! I love looking at these photo's, all of em, but DC's are just about pic's of Heaven to those of us who, and I believe they are many like myself, who desire to see it for ourselve's! God's handiwork is evident everywhere we turn but Montana is truly one of his many masterpiece's. How could anyone doubt his existence? How else could all this beauty be? Keep em coming Doug. We truly enjoy them!

Well this is not the picture I hoped to share but it is all I have. :( After waiting a year when I went down today for our week of hog hunting this is what greeted us.This is high ground 3 miles from where I was supposed to hunt.Dang I am starting to hate these hurricanes!

Can you see the Ptarmigin? I ran into quite a few and it's amazing how they blend in. Turn your head and they're gone. Take a step and they start to purr and right in front of your eyes you now see three of them. I took a photo of this guy at about 5 feet laying on my belly. I have another photo I took and I can't even see the bird in it??

Here's looking down the Mission Creek valley just a few miles west of us. This is where I've been doing a little bear and doe hunting. My buddy owns the ranch down in the bottom next to the creek. There's probably 20 deer running around in this pic if you could see em. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/gotahunt/LookindownMissionCreek.jpg) They are quite a bit lower than us so the fall colors are just beginning to come in.

This is a unique place I call the dying field. For some reason the area holds many skeletal remains of various species. There are three skulls in the picture (http://www.ozbow.net/phpbb2/album_pic.php?pic_id=852) . Cow skull in the center. Note the mud on the V in the trees from hogs. CK

Nightstalker ,
my camera can't give you the true sence of what i saw yeaterday . i live on the St. John river in New Brunswick . where i live the river is damed 20 miles down stream and has flooded 40 miles up stream .where the pics are taken it is over 1 mile across . Oct 10 has always been the day that the colors are the brighest .the pics don't show how vivid the oranges and reds really are . very hard to hunt as i am to busy looking around .
today it is Thanksgiving here in Canada and you can see why we have at this time of year . can only say thank you to the CREATOR FOR THE SPLENDOR ---herb (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v75/HerbH/fall%20colors/Dscf0013.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v75/HerbH/fall%20colors/Dscf0011.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v75/HerbH/fall%20colors/Dscf0008.jpg)

Here is the same bog about 15 minutes later. It's kind of a neat place, by my GPS I was 4/10ths of a mile from my truck. I knew I was at the edge of a Wildlife Management Area that bordered private property, I found out how private when I ran into a line of posted signs shortly after I took this picture.

well I'm going to try this picture posting thing.
I've been inviting these guys over here to hunt wht-tails for the last 10yrs. Deer numbers are down this year but my buddies 17yr old kid did manage to take his biggest todate. This is the kids fifth deer with a recurve not to mention the turkeys and yotes.

Now "THAT" is a great hero pic!
-
If your like me and feel not all trophies have to be eatable, then here is my opening day trophy. Looking at the pic it seems this yote is alittle on the thin side. However, in real life it was very healthy (fat) and had a thick pelt. All in all, I'm happy as can be. Didn't weigh it but, guessing I'd say it was average. Around 25#.

Congrats Troy, yotes are hard to tag with a bow. Did you call him or nail him goin by? I love it when you call them in and they realize they screwed up. Only critter I know that can say OH SH*T with their exprestion. :D
-
Great pics here, fine thread. I'm enjoying all of this, thanks to all.
-
Robin,
I had set up for deer. That dog just happened by. It was a female that desided to empty her bladder as she walked right into my shooting area. Needless to say when she squated I drew. During the draw she looked up and as you said, the "Oh $#!#" look held here there just long enough. Arrow took out the driver and passenger side air bags. Still she managed to cover close to 150 yards before giving up the ghost.
-
hey Kojac, THat's one fine pic! Love it! Thanks for posting it.
This thread is great! Thanks to all who have posted! Better than any hunting magazine you'll ever subscribe to!

Coolll Glenn!! Are those things legal to hunt?
-
We can't hunt any kangaroos in Australia Doug. We were on a pig hunt up in Cape York and usually we don't see a lot of kangaroos in this area because of the large numbers of dingos, kangaroos and wallabies are the dingos maim food, and they keep their numbers down fairly well...Glenn...

Again Doug nice pic. Hey Glenn you have to tell me how you did the posting pic? I'm a bit lost!

Monday.. was my first day out for the early Archery Season here in Southern New York. Weather was mild and breezy with lot's of sun (you can interpret that as little deer movement!). Seen several does, nothing to shoot or present a shot though. It's early yet.. come the end of the month and the rut starts kicking in! It was great to be out. Hard to believe another year is now here! Autumn is great! It's color! It's weather! It's deer hunting season!

2,
Thanks! First attempt at splicing. Bow is a Checkmate Falcon. Best for the money, hands down.
The pic makes my crown length look uneven, but its just the way they are in the quiver.
And that Coleman stove is the same one my Dad had with us on our first hunting trips 20 years ago.

Here is a little video don't download it if you don't have a fast internet connection and good eyes its just not worth it :) . I took it with my digital camera and the light was very poor and the deer too far for that little camera. You can just see a little fork horn that came in Sunday afternoon left of center he walks in then out to the field.

My buddy Doug Schlabaugh invited me to hunt one of his properties in Hancock County, WV. I did the paperwork for my license on-line and printed it out a few minutes later then left my home in SW Pennsylvania and drove the 30 minutes to the panhandle of WV.
I was settled in by 4 PM and saw deer almost immediately. Just before dark this doe walked by and I released when she passed an opening at 10 yards.
I whistled for Doug after dark but he never came...he shot a doe about an hour earlier. A DOUBLE! I didn't have my digital camera so I took this pic at home. Doug has the pic of both deer on his film camera, I hope.

A snap shot of Cape York Pennisular. Good pig country. In this paart of the Cape the country is very hard and dry, you will often see kangaroos with a full pouch but a lot of them are not carrying their joeys they have to carry a billy of water and a cut lunch just to get across some of these paddocks...Glenn...

Brian H, You look a little like Jack Nicholson in the Shining in that picture.
"Honey I'm home."

-
Shoot ??? aw, heck no....them's my bait ! :D
I generally have at least one doe under 15 yards everytime I go out there...depending on what stand I use. They do a nice job helping to pull in the neighborhood bucks, and the kids I take out here can most generally fill their tag with a doe if I can't get them on a buck. Last year, kids took 3 bucks and 3 does from out back....all with bows except for one with shotgun. Not bad for only 10 acres of woods, eh? 'course, there's the swamp, the creek and the food plots too.
God Bless.
God Bless.

The wind wouldn't let me set in the stand that I wanted to,so I went to nosing around....

A sow I shot the first evening of our trip to Cape York. The sows up there are very aggressive as are all of the pigs, in the area where I hunt they don't have a lot of human contact but they are under constant from dingos. That sounds like a winner! Send me pm or e-mail and we will do it. I always like getting together on hunts in new places and makin' new huntin' buddies. Do you know Mark (Pappy) and the Baggett crew in Clarksville? Great folks, and they put on a great shoot.
Doug,
My wife and I got married in Livingston. Lived out there six months total. Our plan (dream) is to settle there in a couple years after I'm done with school here. I check this thread daily in anticipation of your posts, and call my wife in here every time theres a new pic. How 'bout someday soon you teach me the ropes on elk, mulies, and antelope?
Aussie,
Wow! A compliment all the way from Australia. Thanks man!

Saturday morning this turkey ran into one of my rivercane arrows! I was using a BBO that I had just finished. It was it's first trip to the woods! I think it's gonna work. Ralph (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/KsBow1/Z-BowandTurkeyonaStick.jpg)[/IMG]

A mob of chital deer in the basalt country of North Queensland. there is a good stag in the background, not very clear though...Glenn...

-
Glen your killing me! I am going hunting in 2006 in OZ with Bill Baker and having to waite really drives me nuts and then you put up all of these pictures of hogs and chital. Keep posting them though because the anticipation is part of the fun! Going to Africa next summer and have been watching videos of hunting there for the last 2 years  Looks like you are having fun, Joseph
-
Joseph, I would like you to believe that I put in a good stalk on the chital to take that photo but in actual fact the photo was taken at Billy Bakers last April from the hunters lodgings. They were walking off the basalt wall to their night feeding areas, that is less than a quater of of the chital that came across. Its good sitting there having a drink and watching the chital. You will really enjoy hunting the Chital and Baslat Warriors...Glenn...
-
Glenn
I dont know if you remember but I chatted with you in Michigan at the Longbow shoot several years ago about hunting buffalo in Oz. Well, I finally made the jump-I'll be hunting the NT for 3 weeks this coming spring/summer for buff, pig, and whatever else gets in the front! I'm pumped up, this should be a blast.
Ryan
-
Saw nothing to shoot today. But did get close enough for a couple of digital shots of something many never get to see. Hope they turn out and you enjoy this piece of nature. Ralph (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/KsBow1/171f56f7.jpg)[/IMG]

Hey Ralph - are those white elephants in a Kansas grain field? :)
-
Ken, these are the White Cranes that shut down all hunting areas on Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, which is located about 300 yards west of where they are standing. Whoopers seem to really enjoy dining on brand new wheat. So they are in a Kansas grain field. I'll have to reduce the pics more to get the elephants on here. Ha. Ralph
-
I do remember you Ryan, you will enjoy hunting in the N.T. I have never hunted buffalo myself, just the pig hunting alone would be worth the trip up there. Good luck with the buffalo, I know you will really enjoy the trip...Glenn...

A "Basalt Warrior" the pigs of the basalt are some of the toughest I have ever hunted and I have been hunting pigs with a bow for over thirty years now and they really do earn the reputation of "Warriors", treat one with the slightest bit of disrespect and you will pay for it. Sorry it isin't a better photo, I now know not to hold the pigs ear for future photos...Glenn...

This is one of two different bears I saw this morning, both within 15 minutes of each other, along with two deer that the first bear spooked. This is the third bear I see the last two times I have hunted this stand.

Dang nice pic David....Terry, maybe we need to move to NH to get our bear!

JC
I passed on one two days ago at five yards, now two this morning. One of them is going to get shot soon, they've actually spooked deer twice on me now.
David
-
JC...Nah...I got us a plan for the 05 opening weekend....

Half your luck David, I wish we had game like bears to hunt....Glenn....

You and Terry are welcome to come up here anytime you want, heck I'd put you guys right in that stand. Be forwarned though, it is starting to get a litle chilly up here, it was 30 this morning, and still only 35 at 9 am. There may be one less of them bears tommorrow if they keep it up.

Nice job. Nice bow, and come to think of it, nice camo too. (In case you can't tell, I shoot a Morrison and wear Predator camo. Now all I need is the deer to go with it.)
David
-
Thanks David, I'm a big fan of both Bob Morrison's bows and Predator. I don't think you can do any better than both! Hope ya get one...if not at least you're seen bears.
Now don't tease me about coming to see you...I might just show up with bow in hand for a bear! 30 degrees huh? We'll have temps that cold here too....but it's usually end of December. :bigsmyl: Hard to beat Georgia: 12 deer limit, mild temps, and pretty women.
-
This photo is a bit late...but this is what we woke up to on 7 Sept. on our elk trip.
-
No teasing there, JC. If you said you wanted to come up to try for bear, you would be more than welcome. No bears today, not sure if it was the weather change or the start of muzzleloader season. We'll see tommorrow,
David

Snuck up on this little guy in his bed while still-hunting through an ash/oak grove last evening. Had a standing agreement with the property owner to shoot a spike if I could. He made me at about 18 yards and stood up to walk away and I let him have it. Good fun.

I was sneaking through my favorite squirrell area this morning. Had some new "Natural Gear" camo, that I was all hot to try out. As the sun came over the hill, I realized, that no matter how much one tries to blend in, there is no getting away from your shadow.

A small tree squirrel from the California Sierra's. "Chickory squirrel" is what I think they are called. This fellow stood and barked at me just a little too long this morning. Entered the woods, with 5 arrows. Exited the woods with one. The trees have all the rest.

Heres a more recent picture of my first bow kill. Maybe if more people were willing to hunt what they eat, and eat what they hunt, more people would be living...

A couple of pictures of a boar I shot on the hunt to Cape York. Stalked to under 10 yards and when the arrow hit he gave a big whoof and spun around to face me, I was thinking this isin't good as I was hooked up the arse last year but he just trotted of about 50 yards and went down.

The pics just keep gittin better. Thanks guys cool shots. really like the one's of country I've never seen.
-
Glenn....great pics from down under...thanks. Yep, The Paradise is hog Paradise....in 03 we actually had TOO MANY hogs on the property, I was seeing them at High Noon mid summer pushing 100 degrees.
Last year they we a bit thin...but the population right not looks to be about right, but I expect more to pile in as the acorns are now starting to really fall.
-
Terry one of the best times to hunt pigs in Australia is in the dry season when most of the water has dried up and the pigs are more concentrated. The heat is opressive and it does force the pigs to water but making the effort in that heat to go hunting is hard yakka.
Years ago I before I was a bowhunter I took my pig dog for walk after some pigs in the heat of the day, walked for miles and didn't see a thing, on the way back to the car I struck a big boar in a wallow and the dog ran straight down to the water and plonked himself in the water adjacent to the boar and didn't move (wasn't well trained at this stage) too bloody hot for him to go chasing pig he reckons, the boar just looked for a few seconds, couldn't believe his luck and took off at high speed.
-
Cool story Glenn.
Now get this...I was seeing the at high noon in the food plots and crossing the roads...not just lying up in the cool wet spots. We were basicaly infested with em.
-
Hey Doug can I come live in the T-Pee? :bigsmyl:
-
Terry it's good when pigs are in high numbers but there is such a thing as too many, I have seen them like that out here when lambing season is on in Central Queensland, you can see pigs in the middle of the day in their hundreds sometimes killing the lambs and lambing ewes in the middle of the day. A station manager many years ago took me down to the lambing paddock and all you could see were pigs killing sheep, that afternoon he poisoned six sheep and in the morning there were three hundred dead pigs in the paddock, I think a lot of that sort of pig activity through the day has a lot to do with the moon phases as well as the high pig numbers. Around the full moon pigs are very hard to find in daylight hours as they tend to camp up before first light especially if there are a lot of dingoes in the area. I love hunting pigs with the bow, next time I'm in the States maybe next year I am going to try and do a bit of pig hunting...Glenn...
-
Tim,....my girls got 1st dibs :saywhat:

Too many pigs?? Heck sounds like one heck of an opportunity to me!!
Glenn, You could see some real snow pics for long, never know when it'll dump up here.
Tim & T, you guys better hurry cause if it ever drys out it's goin the barn for the winter.
Oh yea Sackett!! God's Country no doubt!!
Great series Tommy!!

We don't have any mountains down here but we do have some nice looking creeks. This one is a great spot to intercept deer crossing. Right where the two sand bars come together.

The basalt country of North Queensland is a very intresting place to hunt. This is a picture of an aborigional camp site. The aborigianals use to clear the loose rocks off the basalt lava flow to make a camp site. This is a small camp site of which you find a lot of and some of the camp sites are very large areas cleared of loose rocks where a lot of aborigionals camped next to permenate water where they gathered fresh water mussles...Glenn...

Not the greatest pic, but it was the best I could get at the time. Also had to zoom in quite a bit, so it is grainy. It is a little 6 or 8 point. Took last Saturday morning. Should be a real nice buck if he can make it through another rifle season or two.

Plan to do some hunting very shortly though, so stay tuned!

We have had 80 degree temps for the last week and I stayed home. Today the temp started dropping so I went to a stand in a 5 acre oak patch. I had killed a spike out of this stand opening day and hadn't been in it for 3 weeks. Plenty of acorns on the ground but the only deer I saw were headed to a green field on adjacent property.

Shot this buck yesterday morning, Nov 3rd. Killed him with a rivercane arrow, Magnus II head, out of a reflex/deflex BBO of my own making. Field Dressed 185. Not bad for a "young un". (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/KsBow1/BuckNBow4.jpg)[/IMG]
As you can see, he was quartering away and the Magnus did a number on him

Here's a different view. He was a base ten pointer with a split brow tine and a couple of kickers near the burrs. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/KsBow1/BuckNBow5.jpg)[/IMG]

Glen,
Where was the photo of the young Stags taken?

Jock the photos of the young stags was taken in the Mary Valley just down the road from where I live....Glenn...

Awesome job Ralph....most of our old ones here aren't even that big! Be sure to post the whole story on the Hunting report thread....

Glen,
Is that near the Brisbane Valley?

This is a third year Buck making these Rubs. I've video'd this one each year till now. He is looking quite nice this year. Maybe I'll be able to get some pics of him. CK

Yes Jock the Mary Valley and the Brisbane Valley run parallel to each otherbut east ans west of the Great Dividing Range. The Brisbane Valley runs north-south and the Mary runs south-north. Where I live Maleny is on the headwaters of the Mary Valley. There are red deer close to town but I hunt about an hour up the road.
Sorry for the bad quality of the pictures, I was using the digital zoom going for some of these photos.
A good red double six stag.

Yes I think he would be a happy boy Curtis.

Nice deer Ralph! Be sure and post it on the highlights forum!
Kinda curious about the shot, penetration, distance travel?
-
Pretty buck Ralph. Your quiver is different, whats it made of?
Enjoying the pics Glen. Different country.
CK. Do those deer have ta find something without thorns to make a scrape or are they just a little tougher than ours?
-
Glen,
The photo of the "Royal" is excellent, one of the forrests that I've stalked is blessed with stags of this quality, unfortunately not with a Bow though, kinda fraustrating, but at least I get to watch them up close, keep those photos comming, great to see the beasts and lanscapes of different countries.
-
Robin, The tree has thorns all over it. The Bucks don't seem to mind. All the thorns are gone after they finish. ck
-
Robin, the quiver is beaver. I just cut the longer guard hairs off down to the good stuff. Ralph
-
Jock there are a lot of very good red deer in this area. The origional release of red deer in the late 18000's in Queensland were of Scottish blood also called the Windsor deer.
Another double six with a small harem, pity it was raining when I took this photo.

Great pics guys! Unfortunately, some of you are "still" posting pics that are way, way, way over size. It makes t impossible for dial-up users to download the pics. It took me 10 minutes yesterday to see the whole page. If you can't post a pic under 600 pixels, please do not post. If it take a long time to download, people don't want to see the pics. Thanks, CK
Here is a pic of a young little fella that was chasing a Doe round and round yesterday. He has a couple of years more growth. Then he better watch out. CK

My bow is 62 NTN for a reference.
I'd like to see him.

Well, I had a BIG, BIG, BIG eight pointer at 25 yards Saturday afternoon. I stopped him with a couple of bleats, but it was too open under me and he knew there weren't any deer there. He stood watching for a good 3 minutes before turning. Biggest bodied deer I've ever seen in the woods and his rack had great mass.
I decided to go look for hogs Sunday morning and 5 minutes after hitting the swamp, I saw a group of small boars. Circled downwind and shot the biggest one (75 pounder) as he crossed by me in the palmettos at 12 feet. I guess he was the consolation prize for not getting the buck.

Chris, I really enjoyed viewing your Black Beard Island pictures. Thanks for making them availabe.
Nice hog, 12 foot shot, that's what I call up close and personal.

Thanks Warren,
BlackBeard Island is the longest running Federal Bowhunt in the Nation. This was my first year and we had a blast. We plan to make it an annual trip. Everyone in our group had shots, four out of the five had multiple shots. Can't ask for much more than that on a bowhunt.
By the way, I really enjoyed your video and the hunting notes on your site. I've been "Field Quartering" for a couple of years now and can't imagine dragging one out anymore.
chris
-
Chris, I'm glad to hear that you were satisfied with the video. Yea, I don't drag deer. To fast & easy to fieldquarter and pack.
Years ago, probably in the early 70's, I read an article in a magazine about at hunt at Black Beard Island. One of the hunters on that hunt took, what I remember to be, his 36th deer with a bow. At the time, that many bowkills was unheard of. I was really impressed with the article and have always been interested in the island.
Once again, I really enjoyed the pictures that you took.
Thank You
Warren

My hunting partnet Theo Reichart and I just got back from our annual New York State bowhunt (Catskills), I took this doe at 7 yards and Theo shot his buck at 8, on our last day Theo also took a small doe on our DMP permit. This one came along about 10:30 Sunday morning. I saw a larger buck earlier in the day and decided to hold out and not take the shot on this one. He was 8-yards and didn't have a clue I was even around. Check out the shadow behind him.

Hope I don't regret this one latter.
Good Luck and hunt safe. Steve

Steve, the picture with the shadow is very cool!

Since this is my favorite thread and it's getting close to going to page 2, I thought I would find something to post.
This is a deer that I killed on this day, 30 years ago. Yep, it was my 15th bowkill and it was on November 10, 1974.
I was able to close the distance to 35 yards for a shot at 10:25. The hit was less than perfect but very leathal. The deer only traveled 60 yard.
My bow was a 58", 55 pound, Browning Explorer. Back then I didn't know any better and was using sight pins.
Ain't old pictures great?

On Monday I took this doe. However, my camera batteries were low and I couldn't take a picture in the woods. So here's the gamepole pic. I was shooting an Osage Selfbow that I made from a stave that I traded for at Mojam two years ago. The stave's owner was Mickey Miller of Dallas. So I named the bow MickeyMouse, kind of a skinny sliver type bow. Rivercane arrow. Magnus Head. Traveled 30 yards after the hit. You have to keep your eyes open for swimming handbags when stalking these rays on foot!

These photos are excellent.
Alan,
The one of Samuel is outstanding, your's too Warren.
-
Lots of mojo with this one. Quiver is from Herb, antler on the quiver is from JD, Bow Hush from Terry and silencers are muskrat from Guru. Bow is Morrison Cougar, and last but certainly not least was the arrow. Following Mickey's lead, I took Barb hunting with me, and it was her arrow. How could I lose.

Here are some pictures from today.
This is a little inside corner staging area I like to hunt. I saw a real dandy out of this stand last year (130+) at 26 paces.
It is a tight little stand right on the edge of some cover so thick you can't hardly walk through it. I changed over to my Dano arrow with the Timo stone point since any shot would be close.
Only problem is the deer came in at dark and didn't get close to the stand until it was too dark to shoot.

Great pictures Glenn and Meat. I really like the photo looking between the riser and arrows.

I got this buck on Nov 12th on public ground in Ky. He is my first P&Y buck and will score in the low 130's. I shot him at 11:00 and he was the nineth buck I saw that morning.
Be safe,

Here is a pic of a good Chital(Axis) stag that a good mate of mine shot after a taxing stalk on foot. Three hours earlier I was 12 yards kneeling from this fella and he busted me drawing on him... The stag than walked over to Dans hunting area and BANG Dan puts an arra into him! That's what mates are for... hay? I think anyway

The bow was made by Mr Glenn Newell from here in Oz.A real gentleman and top bowmaker.

Congrats on a beutiful trophy. That is a very nice looking bow too. I'd like to know more about his bows.

Well my Indiana trip was awesome! Saw several big bucks (missed one at 22 yrds) and killed my first deer with trad equipment. Big fat doe at about 6 yards with a 58" Treadway longbow 55# @27". Made a good hit, arrow hit right where I was looking - deer ran 40 yards and dropped within sight. The whole thing was on video too! My huntin buddy tagged out on his buck the first morning of our hunt (compound). Trying to post a pic from Webshots

My hunting partner just developed his latest roll of trailcam photos. I don't think this image could have been staged any better. I think this guy is thanking the big guy upstairs for one more sunset. What do you think?
-
Here is one more. We have been watching this guy for quite some time now. My partner and I both have him on video and have seen him in the flesh....but no shot....YET.
The photo is great but it really doesn't do him justice. The width is an accurate view, but his height, mass and main beam length are reduced substantially by the angles in the photo.
He is awesome to watch. He's been running the girls for 9 days now. I hope he gets tired soon, slows down and goes for a nice stroll by my sling spot ;)

Awesome photos, particularly of the sunset buck, man, the things that go on in the woods that we never see until ........TRAILCAMS!
Can I get a copy of that pic from ya?

Awesome pic of the sunset and buck...I put a trailcam out under my ladderstand to see what was walking by for the opener saturday...While I got several nice blacktail bucks ,I thought this was interesting..

I had my camera set at big buck height and he was just on the inside of the trail so I missed..LOL
he heard the camera take the first pic and now is investigating the sound...

I do have a cougar tag in my hot little pocket and he better not try that whilst I am in my stand

Santiam,
I've been waiting to see the same thing in my trail cam pic. Too darn many of those things running around. I hope you get him.
I've got a cool pic I'll post tonight, when I get home from church, of a good four point.

those cougars make me shudder. I saw one in montana one time from about 30 yards away. he had just jumped the logging road I was driving down and I stopped to get a closer look. he was staring back at me and I swear it was like he was looking INSIDE me. I got a little spooked and I was in a truck with the windows up. he turned and in two steps melted into the grass like a ghost. Good luck on taggin him. I'm glad its your ladder stand and not mine tho.

I got to a new sling spot in the dark this morning and....you guessed it... the big guy walked in front of me at 25 yds. It wasn't legal light yet so....he's still walking. I'll keep you posted.

Hey Stan,
This is the 4th cougar I have caught on my trailcam...I actualy have the WHOLE cat on the other 3..LOL
You going out Saturday??
-
Keep at em Gary, you'll get 'im! Thanks for the tip!
-
Bill,
Yep, I'll be out Saturday. Will only get to hunt in the afternoon though as my wife scheduled some "family" pictures for 8:30 Sat. morning. Can you believe it?
Hopefully, I'll run in to this guy. I have another picture of him in the velvet and was glad to see that he survived gun season. That's my ground blind in the background. I bought it so that my five-year old daughter can go "huntin'" with me. She's always asking, but there's no way I wanted to put her in a tree stand. I've got another picture from the inside looking out with her that I'll see if I can find.
Good luck to you.

Aussie, what a neat looking deer! Never seen one of those before. Are they native to Australia? or an import and if so where from?
-
Here is a short video from this mornings hunt. I have hunted this spot 3 times in the morning and 3 times I have seen deer on the same trail at about the same time.
This morning I opted to sit on the ground so I could get a little closer to where they were passing through. Right on time I hear a noise and sure enough here come two deer a doe and a fawn. I had plenty of back cover but not much front cover. The doe came into about 20 yards saw me but wasn't sure what to do so she came in to investigate. She got as close as 10 yards never spooked but was bobing and weaving trying to get me to move. She eventually turned around and walked directly away never offering a shot.
Now the video only shows the fawn when they were walking away but at the end I zoom in on a fallen tree. The big doe nipped at some moss on the Y of that log. She was close and eyeballing the hec out of me.
It was and exciting morning to say the least.
Deer (450K) (http://www.tradgang.com/dh/video/deer111904.wmv)
-
Nice job Don. I have a problem gettin that close to em on the ground cause I move a little too much, one of the reasons I like my stands so high.
Stan, that is one cool picture with the blind in the background. I think I'd have to throw that one in front of my wife and say "No more saturday appointments sweetie, ever."
-
Good job Meat. One my most exciting hunts this year was having four deer with ten yards of me while hunting from the ground. Closest was at 4 yards, and like you I never got a shot. I woulda swore they could hear my heart pounding in my chest.
David
-
Bill,
I don't have a problem shooting out of the blind with a 66" longbow. There is enough room at the top to move the bow about 30 degrees from side to side. Now, having said that, you'd better be ready to shoot when somethings in that 30 degree window, or it's a no go.
I honestly don't know how much I'll hunt out of the thing. I bought it so that my daughter could sit in it with me. She asks me a lot if she can go hunting with me, and this is a way that she can stay warm, relatively dry, and still see a couple of deer.

This Cypress tree is located at Cat Island NWR, La. The National Champion Bald Cypress tree. It's estimated to be about 1,000 years old and is 83 feet high and has a circumference of 53 feet. It's the largest tree East of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the 6th largest tree in the United States.
While scouting the area I found this hollow cypress tree. Before this area was a NWR, someone used a chain saw to cut some windows in it. It's an excellent ground blind, in a good location.
My friend Murray Landry (Trooper on Tradgang) by an average size cypress, for the area.
Warren
-
Warren, now THATS a groundblind !!! :bigsmyl:
Jacob
-
Jacob, You wouldn't believe how much room is inside of it. Enough for several hunters to be comfortable.
The hollow goes all the way to the top, which is over 40 feet. It seems to draft, much like a chimney for a fire pace, taking all of a hunters scent to the top.
It's located on a narrow ridge between two sloughs. A perfect travel area.
Warren
-
We need them here in Va.Nice blind,no problem drawing a bow in there.
-
Wow, thanks Warren.
Roughcountry,
I don't know how tall it is, but its sky hi I tell ya. I've seen bigger on The Paradise, but this time I had my camera.
Like Warren's pic, Lance got in one once while it was pouring rain, and the squirrels didn't know what to think of him sitting in there.....they really gave him what for as they scampered about just outside getting wet.
-
I look at pictures like those trees and wonder how many critters have used the shade and walked under them.
Thanks Terry and Warren, very cool

Well not exactly partridge in a pear tree but thought this was kinda cool. We had 6 or 7 inches of fresh snow this morning and I guess this bunch of grouse was trying to get out of it. Got this pic going out of our Ranch entrance this morning. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/gotahunt/SharpiesontheRanchentrance.jpg)

It snowed several inches Saturday in the Northern Oregon Cascades, then it cleared off Saturday night and the deer played all night with the full moon. I followed a Blacktail buck track down an old road this morning right to where he'd thrashed a clump of greasewood during the night.
-
I setup along this old road and rattled to see if I could draw anything out of the thick reprod. During the second session of rattling a buck came charging around some trees at 25ft and caught me banging the bones. I quickly dropped the "horns" and grabbed my bow, but the buck spooked and ducked behind some thick brush. Nice day to be in the mountains though!

It was on the first morning of my hunt in SE Iowa. When we planned our hunt, we targeted the week of November 8 for peak rut activity. That morning at 6:00, a 6 point passed on the primary trail I was watching. He freshened the scrape that was 25 yards from my tree. He then walked up the hill and out of my world. At about 6:20, two does followed the same trail. They both sniffed the scrape and the larger of the two urinated there. They walked up the hill as had the 6 point. 15 feet from the scrape they stopped to look to their left. I heard a deep, long grunt and the does took off running straight away from me over the crest of a harvested bean field that was 100 yards up hill from me. A huge bodied deer ran through the brush to where the does had stood and then chased them up and over the hill. His body was like a barrel and was twice the width of either doe! His rack was massive and went far beyond his ears and stood as high as a bushel basket. He stopped on the crest of the hill for a few seconds allowing me to get a quick look with my 10x Bausch & Lomb binocs. He was amazing. I estimated that he’d score in the 175+ range, but he was headed the wrong way.
Half an hour later, I saw movement in the bean field and saw some deer moving toward me. They were does and kept looking back as they moved my way. I heard grunting and soon they were joined by a non-typical Romeo who chased them down toward me. I tried to get a good look at him but the brush didn’t allow it. When they finally convinced him that they weren’t ready for romance, he moved to the scrape. It was then that I got a good look at him. He had a beautiful 4 point rack on one side that swept around in the classic high whitetail form with 8 inch tines and decent mass. The other side also carried 4 points, but the main beam got outside the brow tine then went nearly straight up. He worked the scrape then moved off. He’d have surpassed 100, but I don’t know how far. The day before a friend had been in the same tree and had shot a buck whose rack was mirror image of that buck. His buck had more mass and was an old monster. He may have been the father or older brother of the one I saw.
Through the next couple hours, several bucks passed through, all in the spike to 8 point range, all 1.5 years old and looking over their shoulders. A little after 9, I looked down the hill and saw a buck approaching. My standards for the hunt were pretty clear. I’ve shot several 8 and 9 point bucks, but never a 10. I wanted a 10 point or greater! I’ve also shot a ton of bucks, but none have been 90” or bigger. I wanted something in the 120 range, minimum. I saw a buck approaching from down the hill and south about 75 yards. The first thing I noticed was a ridge that ran around the inside of each main beam. The morning sun drew my attention to it immediately. Because of the brush and the awkward angle of turning to use my binoculars, I couldn’t see too well. He was an 8, and I estimated him in the 110 range. He had decent mass. He stomped around in the brush for a full 15 minutes, moving one way and another in the bushes. He worked a tree over and looked for love. He finally made his way to the scrape and gave it the full treatment. Licking, raking the branch, rubbing his eyes on it, scraping the ground with antlers and hooves, sniffing, then urinating on both back legs into the scrape. During that time I noticed two points I hadn’t previously seen. He was not 120+, but he was a 10 point and I wanted him to come down my trail. The scrape was too far for my taste (and practice), and there were just a few twigs between me and him. I wouldn’t shoot.
When he finished working the scrape, he took a couple steps toward the trail leading past my tree, but stopped to contemplate. He then walked back through the scrape and took a couple steps up the hill toward the bean field. He once again stopped, turned, and headed directly north, which angled him past my stand at 20 yards. I drew my 55+# Shakespeare Necedah (58” with Selway quiver) and held for a couples seconds as he stopped behind a tree then walked through the best opening I had before he headed out of range. The little orange puff I’d glued/tied on the nock traced a path into his right side as he was slightly quartering away. He ran 60-70 yards and stood looking around. My orange 2013 shaft with its red and yellow feathers protruded from his right side. More interesting to me was the 5 inch portion with Magnus Stinger 2 blade dripping blood on the left side. He stood there for the lifetime of a few seconds while I watched, hoping for him to drop while I had my Discoverers glued to my eyes. He didn’t drop. After a few seconds/moments/years he ran toward the bean field.
I pulled out my radio and turned it on. I had a friend in a tree 100 yards away and out of sight. His response was, “What did you shoot?” I told him it was a 10 point that might reach 110” and had good mass. Kelly told me that he had seen the buck with the arrow in it and not to trail it without him because that is part of the fun. Since it was 9:30 and prime time, I told him I’d carry my heavy stuff the ¾ mile to the truck then come back. I had the shakes so bad I couldn’t be safe sitting 23 feet up in a tree! After a 1.5 mile hike that included seeing bucks number 10, 11, and 12 for the morning, I got back to my stand. I told Kelly I was back so he met me where the buck had been standing. There was enough blood to trail easily, but not as much as I’d expected from what appeared to be a solid double lung shot. We trailed the buck from the point of the shot to the point where he stood. There was a puddle there. We followed the trail to the edge of the woods and through the weeds, but in the harvested beans there was no blood. Nothing.
I always like to extend the suspense of the trailing process by keeping my eyes to the ground and letting the trail lead me to the deer. No blood in the beans, so I lifted my head and looked ahead. Nothing. Nada. Flat field. I scanned left. Nothing. I scanned right, and there was my buck lying 50 yards away. He was facing away so I could just see the rear end and a rack holding his head off the ground! He had grown after I shot him!!! When Kelly saw him, he thought I’d been pulling his leg when I said 100, maybe 110”. I guess I just wasn’t used to the body size. I got 140 lbs. of boned meat from the processor. His inside spread is 16.75” and he is a typical 10 with 7 inch tines. I don’t yet know his score, but we rough scored him at well over 120. I fulfilled both my goals and at this point I’m shooting a perfect score with traditional archery! One shot, one buck.

Had a baffling incident in the woods tonight. I was in a tree 150 yards from my son. He's never shot a buck and it was the last night of gun season. A six point buck came toward me and stopped at 20 yards. I wanted him to head for my son but he went the opposite way. I shot the ground 5 feet in front of his nose with my 12 ga. slug.
Here's the baffling part . . . At the shot he flinched and kicked up his heels. He ran away with his tail down . . . exactly like the deer have responded to heart shots. He ran 50-60 yards and disappeared behind a couple tree trunks. I never saw him again even though the woods are rather open. Was he laying there
I knew that my gun was sighted in and I knew where my crosshairs were when I shot . . . but I sat in the stand for the remaining hour of light wondering if he had run and dropped from an unintended slug.
I climbed down thinking that if I'd intended to get him, I'd be full of confidence because of his reaction. I was relieved to see no sign of blood or hair or deer . . . he would live to see another day!
And yes. He did run directly away from my son, who saw nothing.

It is opening day of late archery season here in Michigan. No deer but I took these pictures this morning. I also missed one tree-rat.

Stan, that blind is THE TICKET for killing turkeys. I use my longbows out of mine. It awesome to be able to draw on a turkey with 25 or 30 pairs of eyes and not being busted. :bigsmyl:

You sure live in a nice part of the World there Doug. I plan on nocking or your door, if I ever get in your neck of the woods......

Sorry to portray my rifle, Dinner Bell, but this is the stump of this year's National Christmas Tree, which is on display at the mall in Washington, DC. They pulled it out of my hunting area with a helicopter. A red spruce, it was 106 years old.
This shelter is made of chestnut, and was built in 1933. Around 1996 the Forest Service stopped all repairs on it, roof and sealing of the logs, and they are allowing it to decay. I have a lot of fond memories of my last 18 seasons or so spent in this piece of history.

Alan, do the camels in OZ smell like giant skunks like the ones in Saudi. I think OZ is where most of the camels come from anymore in the middle east. A guy I went to school with was in the 82nd Airborne and blew one up one night because it didn't halt when challenged. It's owners where a little irate, threatend to kill him because it seems it was the camel equivelent of a Kentucky Derby winner :scared: I believe the goverment ended up paying $30,000 for it. :smileystooges: I'm looking forward to running around down there. Joseph
-
Great pics everyone...truly unbelievable.
Killi, makes my heart sad to see that stump. I'm gonna have to send Dubbya an email, askin if we can get rid of that stupid tradition. Why kill a hunnert year old tree to hang some lights on it?
-
I haven't gone downtown to see it, and offer my condolences. I saw it on TV, and with the woven blanket of lights on it, it looked somehow...caged.
On the other hand, the local communities are rather proud of the beautiful 65-foot tree, and the well-coordinated efforts that put their home-town hero in the Nation's Capital. No doubt it is also quite a feather in the cap of Pat Sheridan, the USFS District Ranger.
There are always two sides, but like you, I wonder at the logic. "Gee! What a great tree! So beautiful, so perfect! And way older than any of us! Let's chop it down!"
:knothead:
Killdeer ~I will never understand people.~
Good!
-
Excellent photos! (redundant I know). Camel stalking... what a way to start the day.
Killi those pictures are just great. You fit right in with that Cabin... bow or no.
As a kid I was always fascinated by those salamanders... we didn't have the big yellow spotted ones in the desert. Believe we do up here though... going to have to check. That's 'bout my favorite animal.

Funny, my pic that included a rifle got deleted.
-
The great pics just keep coming. Love it. Roos, I was stationed at the diving locker at Keyport a million years ago. Spent lots of weekends in the north cascades. Great country you call home.
-
Good photos everybody, this is the first thread I check every day, good photo of the camel Alan, starting to think about making a camel bow. Kill deer what a waste of a good tree but I suppose it will be turned into lumber in the new year. Where I grew up we had a huge eucalyptus tree that grew in the centre of town that was turned into the christmas tree every year, but branches use to fall off it and damage a few cars in the car park so the tree was felled instead of barracading the area under the tree off, it was more important to have the carparking spaces which was a shame as I had seen koalas and possoms in the tree and when it flowered hundreds of rainbow lorrikets would feed on the flowers making a huge racket, it was fantastic, but the that be couldn't seen any room for the tree in our town anymore...Glenn...
-
Yeh the Camels do have a musty smell to 'em. Mostly the bulls. Fence's don't keep these fellas in ........ !
Australia is the only spot on earth that has Feral camels. A lot of Middle Eastern lads come over to buy a few now and then. The word is our Camels are the best of blood as there from very old stock from back in the 18 hundreds. Not bad eating as well.
Alan In Oz.................... :wavey:
-
The ones I was around in Saudi were realy musty! If you were down wind sitting on a hill you could smell them before you could see them come over the horizon and the horizon was a long ways off. We ended up eating quite a lot of camel while we were there because that is the only source of fresh red meat. It was pretty good, closest thing I could compare it to would be Moose. Joseph

I'm kinda new to this picture posting, but here goes... (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v606/bgentry/Bowdoe2-2004.jpg)
This should be my first deer of '04; a nice little doe taken in the Shawnee.

Okee, my turn! Don't laugh now!
Most of my huntin is suburbia lots next to farmland that will get developed eventually here in Howard County.
Took my son out tonight in the Double Bull and set it up in my customer's three acre lot. 13 doe came out - mostly big mature mamma's were bedded right behind their shed (to the right of their house)...and this is in the middle of our gun season!
Wind was switching back and forth since we were in the bottom land near a stream, no shot, but they got within 40 yards before they were too uncomfortable with our wind. Fun, fun, fun!

Ken that look like a house on Mt Airy Drive. I have had the chance to hunt less than a mile from there.(if thats the house I think it is) Good hunting out there.

It's actually down by my old stompin grounds...the farm next to the one I grew up on in Clarksville/Highland area, Wayne.
Most people think farms are the hot spots...but I always tell them to spy out the small bordering properties and usually you'll find the bedding areas in people's backyards. :)

way to go Brad...BLM

Heck I'm not laughing, I'd hunt in a spot like that if'n I could find someone who'd let me shoot'em in their backyard. Give 'em he11.

Wow! I too love to look through this photos - and wish...not only that I could be out there more often, but 'if only I could get some of these for the cover of our mag. Love that one of you looking out over the mountains Charlie - don't suppose you have that in a REALLY high resolution... or an actual print?
Email me guys if you're interested in letting me use them on/in the magazine.
...and Alan (in oz!) that camel pic brings back some fun memories.
Years back now, my uncle Dennis went out and roped him some wild camels, bought them back to the coast and when he'd tamed them a little (about a month if I remember right...not long enough to be pets for sure!) he saddled them up and rode East to West across the widest part of Australia.
The 'plan' was to release them once he arrived on the west coast, but by then they WERE pets....so he walked them back again!
At the time, I was working at QIT in Brisbane (now Qld Uni). Knew he was due back 'sometime soon' but while he'd said he'd be sure to drop in on me, didn't imagine he'd actually bring the camels into the city!!
Sure enough the head of my school came down all a fluster one morning. Said "there's three camels on the main lawn and some very tall arabian man with them!"
I was only a junior in the office and (fortunately) a bit of a teachers pet - quietly stood up and explained "that sounds like my uncle Sir. He said he'd call by to see me some time."
"Oh, well thats all right then." he replied. Poor guy! He really was all stressed out.
Anyway....was only 2 camels I'd been expecting to find but one of the females had given birth during the walk. While taking them back to the suburbs (yeah, it did make for a few looks) poor Adarn (the bub) tore one hoof on a guard rail.
Became my job to apply this stinking potion Dennis had found (smelt like old dead fish and looked like tar) to Adarn's leg twice a day. Adarn would spit and bit anyone else that came near - even Dennis couldn't control him, hence the accident - but for some jolly reason was meak as a lamb for me.
Do camels smell musty??? About the same as a 300 year old rug that's been left in the rain a few weeks and is proper mouldy!! Breath like ?? don't know, never smelt anything quite that bad before or since and a rather bad habit of spitting this green slime at you just whenever the mood takes them.
I fear I'll never be able to shoot a camel for Dennis will come haunt me!
My girls got to meet him not long before he died. Rochelle, who was in grade 4 at school by that time, wrote in her diary the next day...
"Mummy's Uncle Dennis came to visit us yesterday. He rode a Pennyfeather (Pennyfathing bike) from London to Australia. Ownes camels (he couldn't part with his pets so went out to the Alice to be a Cameleer) and swears a lot in many different languages."
Sorry for the prattle everyone - the pictures and the comments just remind me of him.
Mum still blames him because I 'do all these strange things' - she still can't get a handle on me loving the bush so much...not to mention 'hunting'!
"Thanks Uncle Denny"
Cher

Excellent stories! Thanks for sharing.

Great pics and anuther great story Cher. Sounds like quite a character, I could see the pictures you painted of him.

Thank you JC. I sure prattled a bit didn't I. Sometimes is unfortunate that I can type as fast as I talk...yeh, pretty quick.
Uncle Denny was the BEST - we were always planning some new adventure.
I think all kids could do with a 'nice but wayward' crazy uncle like him in their lives.
Okay, WAY past my bedtime here - you all have yourselves a lovely day...and don't get too cold.
Cher

Gregg, that pic of your daughter is one of the cutest I've seen in a long time. You're a lucky man to have a smiling face like that to tag along with you. Start 'em young, keep the tradition alive.

B

Tom I was thinking the same thing heat and direct sun light or heck on a bow!
-
Like everyone else I really enjoy this thread - -stories and pics.
(I gotta start bringing a digital camera with me....)
This is just an observation (and a late one since I'm just now catching up from the last several days away) but I found the comments about the national christmas tree stump interesting. My initial reaction was pretty much the same as Killdeer's:
Originally posted by Killdeer:
There are always two sides, but like you, I wonder at the logic. "Gee! What a great tree! So beautiful, so perfect! And way older than any of us! Let's chop it down!"
But then it made me realize that is the EXACT response my wife has when I bring home a deer or comment on how beautiful one is in a magazine, on TV, etc....
So instead I'll just think of that tree as "going out in style" - hope they make sopmething nice with the wood.
Now I'm gonna have that Disney "Circle of Life" song in my head for days :knothead:
Sorry for the off-subject post - just made me think....
-
Is this what they mean by bowfishing?

Here's yesterdays afternoon spot. Saw three does but they were just a hair out of range.

Bear
try hanging your stand a little higher. Those deer may just come in a little closer if your up a little higher. give it a try.
-
I cary about 25' of string with a rubber coated trebble hook in my pack. I use it for bow fishing, hat fishing, arm guard fishing etc.
-
Nice set-up, what bow is that? and the tree is it an oak?
-
Looks like an osage tree with a poison ivy vine in it. Pat
-
Looks like a white ash tree to me?
-
You guys are killin' me! I wish I could be out there with you all this year hunting. Some of your pictures are absolutely outstanding. Thank you for sharing your adventures! Take care and God bless, Scott
-
Dang, I thought it was a tulip poplar. What I know about forestry most guys would clean out from under their fingernails...
That IS poison ivy, tho'!!
Also, I think if I had a view from my house like Treekiller's, my head would explode! Hubble would pick up images of my grin, teef a-gleaming like unto the stars, spinning crazily off into the vast recesses of the infinite universe.

Killdeer, thats just what I thought....good gosh :scared: LOOK at that poison ivy vine on that tree. Makes me itch just sittin' here.
Bear, my friend, stay away from those "hairy" lookin vines, unless you're lucky enough to not be allergic to it. How's yer season going? Any chance you could get over this way after Christmas? Hope you're doing well.
Kyle
-
What, Kyle? The poplar tree or the "free and unfettered" part?
Killdeer~image is everything~wispy wild woodland wraith.
Oh. I wanna T-shirt. Just copy and paste this onto the other thread.
-
No Killdeer, just the part about that POISON IVY on that tree......YIKES.
Kyle
-
ANd that poison on the tree will get ya even in the winter...Kev
-
Why is it that the best stand trees always have the poison ivy vine on them? And why is it always on the side you need to hunt? I cleaned one off of one tree looked just like that one. It dripped juice the whole time. I'm amazed I didn't get any of it on me :) Nice pics!
-
Poison Ivy? Wash with tecnu (sp) put on rubber gloves. Cut vine at base. Pull out of tree. Wash with Tecnu two times. Worked for me anyway.
I had just recovered from the poison ivy I got while hanging my treestand prior to the season. I really wanted to hunt the stand, but I knew the vine was still there. I carefully climbed up into the stand for the morning hunt. Saw some deer that were just out of range. After the hunt I carried out the procedure described above. No worries since.
-
This has to be one of the best threads in here. I just love these pics of everyones bows and hunting areas and everything else. It just gets the blood flowing. Now if Santa only brings me that digital camera this year...
-
I need one too, I hear ya Shape Shifter
B
-
All,
Yes, its ivy. But I was real carefull and dont even have a trace of it. Had my first case of it earlier in the season. Never again!
Dutch,
It is a Checkmate Falcon. Thanks for the compliment.
Kyle,
Hey man! I havent forgotten you! My Dad was in town for two weeks. Then finals. I'm in Florida for Christmas but will be back on the 26th. School doesnt start back till January 17th!! So you might end up seeing more of me than you had planned. Just kidding. But yes! Definatly after Christams.
My season has been awsome. I still only have one deer to show for it, but I have never seen so many in my life. If I had been using the PSE I sold last year I would have had six by now!! I have never had a season like this. NO REGRETS! I'd rather watch 'em with a recurve than kill 'em with a compound.
-
That hairy root winding up that trees got me itching just looking at it!But looking at your hunting area,i'd shimmy up that tree too.
Great pics keep em coming.
-
Greg, What's Tecnu??? Thanks. TomL
-
Anti Poison ivy/oak soap, works fantastically well. You wash after exposure, and use it in the laundry and on boots.
B
-
What Bpaul said. It is pretty cheap and over the counter. It beats the $38 per bottle (x2) that I paid for Zenfel to get rid of poison ivy, though at the time I would willingly have paid more. I keep the Tecnu stuff in my truck now.
-
OK guys....if any of you take any hunting pics during the holidays....get em in here before we close this thread and move it to the archives.
You betcha we'll do it again in 2005!

I have a few more pics planned before we roll it up for the year. Its sure been nice hunting all over the world with you guys. Been real cool looking through your eyes. CK

I spent this morning hunting in a foreign world. Santa came and left me every Kids dream come true. A white South Texas Christmas! I couldn't help myself this morning. I dawned the thickest garb and hit the woods. Funny how snow makes hunting so easy. Heck, just follow the tracks in the snow till you cross your quary. I ground stalked three different hogs this morning. I could have nailed a big one but I was quite far from home and didn't wish to drag the big fella all that way in the snow. Merry Christmas to you all! CK

There is a Grizley on there, just real hard to see. Its a 125 black set horizontal - gets lost in the background. 53# Reynold's take down Ramhorn with Arrow Dynamic carbon and yellow fletch so I can see it go. 9grn / lb it will go fast and go through. Got a couple of nutters in the stand in case of varmints or skwerls.

This doe is doing the two directions listening thing, dang that would be handy.

Guys and Gals, It was one fantastic year of hunting around the world through all your pics. Thanks for making this thread so much fun. I look forward to hunting with you in the year to come. The daily hunt pics for 2005 has been started. Any further posting of pictures should go there. Thanks again. Curtis Kellar
