I just wanted to say that I had a great time today out scouting with some NJ Trad Gangers. We met up at "Jumbo Land" for introductions. It was good to be able to put names to faces. :scared: I think we all made fast friends.
After we had a good breakfast and coffee off we went to do a days worth of pre-winter bow scouting.
We saw some real nice areas that all hold potential. I have an idea where I would like to try hunting next week. Could be the area we all posed for our group picture
It was too bad that everyone could not make it today but thats ok. There will be other chances to get together in the future.
I can't wait to do a group hunt! Thanks to Tom and Ron for sharing your knowledge of the area with the bunch of us.
Larry
Larry,
I had a great time with all of you guys this morning. It was the closest thing that I've had to a day off in a long time. Just wish I could make the hunt next Saturday!
Tom's gonna post the pics of that little rub we saw.
Great meeting everyone, and I'm hoping that some of you will fling some arrows on the 5th.
-Ron
Ron,
Good to meet you too. I will be in touch with you about you know what. lol I'm not sure if the Mods will let me say.
Larry

sorry I missed it..... I stuck out of town...Happy New Years to all
Like I said Ron I should have taken photos of the whole rub line. What was there 6 or 7 trees? This guy wants to be sure no other bucks come around his territory.Bottom picture left to right Larry- recurve 50Lbs ,Pete -non-typical,me- bentpole, Scott -southpaw shooter, Tom -deadbolt.Top picture Ron -Sharpster took the spot in the middle. Great day guys. Next Saturday wackum and stackum!I hope I don't have to work! Vaughn- deadsimple not in the picture.
i counted 8 in the rub line from start to finish not counting that big one ya got a picture of.
Did everyone get that NJ Link I PM'ed you folks?I had to send Ron's twice.
Got it bentpole, thanks - good time today folks! Tom nailed it, 8 rubs besides that one.
I didn't get any link.
Tom,
Sorry I missed it ( I was doing Christmas dinner/gifts with family)
Looks like you guys had fun. I hope to go this week to get my license, walk around with bow/map/gps in hand
Hey Recurve, I grew up in Boonton Twp. and took my first deer in Jefferson. Where are you guys hunting these days if not on private land?
Good luck next weekend to all.
Hey Tomh,
Good to hear from another Boontonite. Did you go to BHS? What year did you graduate?
Well there are still a lot of deer in the township. Many deer are causing damage in town now because the B.T.P.D. chief closed all the Township public land to ANY type of hunting. No more hunting on Sheep Hill. This has been the second year the land has been closed to hunting but it's still ok for people to run their dogs unleashed and ride ATV's. I've been doing a lot of my hunting on the state WMA in Rockaway Township and hunting a couple private spots in Chester Township. Getting permission from a private land owner in BT is very hard if not next to impossible. There's been a lot of development and influx of tree huggers who don't know a thing about managing wild life. Too bad. Maybe some day they will learn.
Larry
Hi Larry,
Wow it sounds like things have really gone downhill since I left after graduating BHS in 85. The deer were everywhere back then, I can imagine how they are proliferating with no hunting in the township. Most of the wooded places I used to run around are built over with housing now. I don't recognize the area now.
Glad to hear you have some places you can still bow hunt.
How do you like that shirt you are wearing?
I notice that we haven't heard from Pete. Tom do you know if he made it home okay?
Pete?... PETE?... PEEETE!!!???
-Ron
Had a great time scouting spots with you guys. Good to be able to finally put some faces to some screen names.
Hey, when did the cameras come out?
Deadbolt, I'm glad to see you made it home safe.
Bentpole, got the link, thanks.
Ron, thanks for breakfast! You got a PM.
Ron yea he made it home fine I had my truck at his house.
He went by his inlaws for dinner after he dropped me off so I probably just crashed in bed aftwer that LOL. He'll get on here eventually.
Thanks vaughn!! And where were you for that picture LOL.
Had a great time yesterday  Was nice to meet new people and have a good laugh. Was nice to walk around some of my old huntin grounds!! Tom,thanks for the link, will def. look into it.That rub area has always held nice deer(shh no deer in NJ)LOL.Tom,Larry,Ron was nice to meet you guys and lookin forward to huntin w/you :campfire: Scott,Vaughn,a pleasure as usual. Now guys, sharpen those eyes and BHs and get ready for Sat. :archer:
PETE
Vaughn that's when you disappeared . Everyone was saying Where's Vaughn where's Vaughn? Next thing we know you were standing on the Bank of The Flatbrook looking at that crossing.Guys bring your cameras Saturday if you have one. What about video cameras? Momma just got one from Santa Claus a Sony Handy Cam DVD HMMMMM anyone ever use one of these before. I better not drop it in the Flatbrook!!! Hey what bows are you folks going to bring? Scott; is Joe and Bamboo coming? Pete; I can't believe you met my old hunting and fishing Bud Big Dave [may he rest in peace]We had alot of good times together.I started him flyfishing. I always said if he lived another year I would have had him shooting a Trad Bow . He was ready but he just ran out of time. Can't believe he's gone three years already. Can't wait until Saturday!
Hi guys
Just curious about where you guys are hunting. A couple of us trad guys up here in Vt come down to NJ every year in the fall season. We usually hunt on the Old Mine road around the Van Campen Inn. Good luck on your hunt.
Dave
Thanks Dave.Dave we weren't far from there at all.We actually checked out from around Wallpack up to the Milford Bridge all along Old Mine Road.Let us know when you folks come down next year. Traditional Brothers are always welcome!
So where does everyone what to try Sat? MAybe we could send PM's to Tom "Bentpole".
I just spoke to Reiner and he is ready to go for Sat. He and I were wondering if we could bring another guy with us? This guy shoots a compound and we have been trying to get him over from the Dark Side of the Force. He does already own 3 Trad bows but for some reason he won't shoot them. Perhaps if we get him out with us that may be just enough to get him to forget the training wheels.
Larry
Hey Alex I missed your post. We all understand prior commitments with family. Can you make it Saturday?
Sorry I missed yesterday but count me in for saturday!
We all forgive you George!!! Which Mahaska are you bringing Saturday Bucky? HMMMM SHREW or Horne's?
Saturday morning I think we should spread out along the road to Buttermilk[should get there before first light though]. Sit for a few hours maybe catch them crossing the Flatbrook back to a bedding area. Then if we think they're still in the thickets we can push that or the fields along the Flatbrook.OR if Scott wants to push around the BRIDGE at first light? The first place we looked at is a good early morning push too I would think.
Hey everyone,
I'm working Saturday so I can't hunt but I would still like to have breakfast with you if you're gonna meet at Jumboland again.
-Ron
Ill be bringing my ancient spirit thunderhawk itchin to get some blood on that bow! LOL
I have a digi camera and we just got a new video recorder do higgy but I dont know how to use it yet LOL
If we are gonna post in the morning honestly I dont think busting in the woods by buttermilk is a good idea unless we get in VERY early. Theres alot of land to cover to set guys up and I think we would kick the area quick if we did that simply by walking in. The push wouldnt be as productive IMHO.
If we are gonna post the morning I'd say that first spot we hit or one of scotts spots he showed us would be best. You can get in easier and with less disturbence.
I wont be able to get up there to early if ya'll are gonna head in the woods really early at like 0500 ill meet ya guys after the morning post...I had to leave at 0300 just to be at jumboland for 0600 I'm not trying to killmyself here LOL.
If we do meet up for breakfast at jumboland again we wont get to the woods until sunup anyhoot and by then I say just start pushing we have the daylight lets use it.
Legal shooting light these days is 0700.
It sounds like you guys are gonna have a bigger group than we scouted with. Maybe send 1/2 the guys into the woods by buttermilk like Tom said and the other 1/2 of the group could go into the area we checked by the Walpack Inn. That way each group would move deer towards the other. Scott's area is very good too, and easy to sneak into without spooking the deer.
Deadbolt, weren't you telling me about a certain "issue" with that bow...? :saywhat:
-Ron
Good luck to you guys! I've been following this post, but my days off are Tuesday's and Wednesday's. That pretty much means I have to hunt alone. I'm going to check out the Zone 18 section of Collier's Mills this week. After the fourth it's bow only, which I prefer.
I liked those first 2 spots Ron took us to for quick drives. Perhaps after a morning sit. I'm thinking the spot next to the Inn would be a better evening spot for a sit. Espcially if we all set up inside the wood line no more than 30 yards off the grass fields. We might be able to catch them moving from their beds to the feeding area.
I have a tough choice as to what bow I'm gonna bring....My Turkey Creek!I need a back up bow bad!LOL
I spoke to George "Bucky" tonight. He thinks it's wise to bring plenty of arrows especially if we do drives.
Tom , I'm bringing the 51# with my new 285 grain snuffers!
Looks like you fellas had a great time. I got hit with the flu bug late Sat evening, just crawled outta bed a few hrs ago. Two parts of my body are real sore...my ribs and ....well...anyway...I'm heading down to buy my license this week and hope to be there Sat. Can't wait to meet everyone...
Man we saw so many spots yesterday that I'm kicking myself for not taking notes! Come on guys throw out some more suggestions.
Joe what did you have the "both ways flu"???? That's the one where stuff comes out both ways.
My late father in law called that "the green apple quick step".
Add the bad belly, and I'm sure we had a much better day than you did Joe.
Looking forward to meeting you. You should hear what some of the guys were saying about you! Of course, I didn't believe a word of it.
Ron
What time is everyone meeting at the Diner? See you there
Yeh what time are we meeting again folks?
Yea Ron Ive had some issues with this bow but I wanna put some blood on it...customer service is a hoot but the bow is a real shooter!
Hey Gangers, I have been following this thread and was wondering if you all minded if I tag along with you. I know the area well down there by the river. I live only 2 miles as the crow flies from Jumboland and my last Saturday to get in the woods for the season is this weekend. It would be great to meet some like minded tradbow hunters and swap some area knowledge. Thanks, Jason Yanvary
The more the better. Is anybody bringing treestands?
What time you all meeting?
I was thinking 5 30 at jumboland. Is that good for everybody? Treestands or we driving all day?
Lodestar we must be neighbors It only takes me a few minutes to drive to Jumboland from my place. Come on and join us.
So guys, have we decided what we're gonna do? Looks like we're gonna have a good group. We should take advantage of the numbers. I like the idea of posting in the morning on both sides of the flatbrook by walpak for a few then doing some quick drives in some of the spots that Tom and Scott showed us along Old Mine road. Then maybe post a little before dark. Hey I'm open to just about anything, but we gotta decide so we can set meeting times and such.
Oh yeah I spoke with Jerry Jeffer earlier and he might join us too.
Hey Vaughn and every one else. It looks real good for me to be able to join you all at least for the first half of the day. I'll meet Vaughn at his place and work from there. I'm excited!
5:30 is good for me. Vaughn I like your idea too.We meet at Jumboland at 5:30 if that's too early anyone that has to come later can call us on the cell phone to see where we are?.I know Tom has a hec of a ride. Break up the group into two groups? Half on one side of the Flatbrook the other on the other side. Then have the groups walk towards the River at a certain time. I know there has to be deer bedding in those feilds and little wood lots . We spread out and push towards the Flat.
I'd say leave the stands home just bring something to sit on for early morning and at night.Jerry, Glad you can make it!Oh what time does Jumboland open at?Sunday Larry and I sat until 6:00 waiting for them to open
jumboland doesn't open till 6am i thought?
when ever ya'll decide to meet up ill try to get there. just let me know which patch of woods to mosey my butt into and find a nice tree to post at.
just finished sealing my first set of homemade cedars hope i get my broadheads in time to bring em hunting and practice a bit before.
Ron says it opens at 5 on Sats
Man it's a small world. Hunted winter bow and ate a jumbo land for 15 yrs (1990-05).Good luck and keep your drivers tight boys. Those deer are some of the smartest deer I've ever drove. They will bust back through the smallest opening in the line.Hows the herd doing? The last year I hunted we moved more bears than deer.
PV The herd isn't what it used to be for sure. Bucky and I have been hunting there since around 85 you remember what it was like back then. There will be more bear than deer if the GOV doesn't open the bear season again. The spring fawns have it rough between the Yotes and bear. Smart deer for sure. I don't know if you remember the feilds they cut along 560 years ago? Now you need a 'dozer to get through them. They sneak back in them to bed early morning. They also didn't cut the corn for pheasant season this year that hurt us too.Bucky still managed one opening day pheasant though. We still have some standing corn left. Might not hurt to push the corn too boys.
Deadsmple, I live rite over by the kittatinny High school. On route 521 & Chandler drive.
Have some buddies who hunted over by the river last week and did drive a lot of bears around, matter of fact one freind saw 6 bears on one drive. They did however harvest 4 deer and saw a heck of a nice buck. My work partner had him at 15 yards and blew the shot. I hunted down by the river during the early season by the Van Campens Inn and saw loads of deer this year before the corn was cut. Havent been down since but I know they are there.
Are you guys planning on standing the AM and then doing some drives or just starting the day driving? Either way, I'm in even if its just to wallk the LB in the wood. Jason
Here's an idea. We meet at Jumbo Land to eat breakfast. Depending on how big the group is, split us into 2 groups. Then we head out and drive those 2 spots close to Jumbo Land, the first 2 spots Ron took us to. Then drive all day going spot to spot working our way north along the big D river. That way everyone will have an idea of what the game plan is keeping things simple instead of hopping from spot to spot burning more gas than time in the woods.
Larry
I agree with Larry. The deer in these areas have been hunted since the beginning of October. Since Thanksgiving they have been pressed real hard by the muzzleloader and shotgun hunters. The deer become largely nocturnal by now. The best way to hunt January deer, other than baiting, is to get them moving with a drive. It sounds like there will be enough guys to put on effective drives, so let's put that to our advantage.
Thanks for the update bentpole. My buddies will be hunting in the area the 10th-12th. Most of our drives are in the gap. If anyone's looking to do some drives next week they could hook up with them.Good bunch of guy's even if some shoot wheels. Look for some MA and NJ lic plates and tell them Sam Elliot said to look them up.
Good luck and looking forward to the stories.
Paul
Good point Scott. We really should take advantage of our numbers and get those deer moving. Besides it sure would be nice to be eating breakfast while we finalize things instead of standing in the dark on the side of the road.
Wow lodestar we are neighbors. I'm just off Mt Benevolence on Owassa rd.
well im off to work wont be home until friday night. ill try to check in from time to time to see if there are any updates.
so lets figure out what time we want to meet up.
im gonna try to fletch a new set of arrows over the next 2 1/2 days while im on tour hope i get some downtime for it LOL.
Folks I'm going back to work in a minute [gotta work a double]Just spoke to Alex [sorry i cut our conversation short]he has his NJ License excellant! I'm game for anything. Can't wait to get out in the woods again this time with the bow!. Drives it is.Big breakfast and push the woods. The only bummer is the wifes cousins are coming down from New Hampshire this weekend and they are taking everyone out for dinner Saturday night[the family] so I can only hunt until noon!
Tom have your wife's cousins meet you for dinner at the Walpack Inn. That way you can meet them after hunting all day. If you bring a fresh set of clothes maybe one of the local Trad Guys might let you use their house to change your clothes. :knothead: Anyone willing to lend old buddy Tom a place to change clothes?
By the way, what time are we meeting for breakfast at Jumbo Land? Is it 5, 5:30, or 6?
Larry
Hey deadsmple, I was just camping up on the federal property saturday into sunday with my brother and son. We camp just south of rattlesnake mountain by the beaver pond. You know were I'm speaking of? I'm always up there sneaking round with bow in hand....One of my favorite spots to escape the rat race down here.... Jason
If memory serves, deadsmple and lodestar are both pretty close to my uncle's farm. I haven't been there in 25-30 years, but it is right in that area.
I'll find out soon enough, as I'm hoping to hunt there next year.
Curiosity got the best of me. I called my mother and asked her. My uncle's place is a couple miles farther north - up around Layton.
Jason,
glad to see your going to hunt with the guys.
Eric, Is your familly's farm Russ Spinks' place?!!!
Russ is an old familly friend and his farm adjoins some of the land we're hunting. Any chance that you could get the guys permission to hunt the farm?
-Ron
I'm leaving work early Friday to buy me license. Its roughly 80 minutes from my home to the Flatbrook.
Thanks to my buddy Scott, I'm spending the night at his place so I can gain that extra hour sleep.
Really looking forward to Saturday, broke out the snow camo, backquiver...just made up some new 2117's Super Slams and mounted the original Schulz broadheads on them.
Will be hunting with my Mikuta longbow and have my Kempf Steatlth as a backup. I'm hoping the weather warms alittle to soften the snow and make "driving" a little easier on the knees. Can't wait to meet everyone, this should be a fun time. Bring the cameras!
I'm getting stoked! I'm finally gonna hunt and meet with a nice size crew of the tradgang! I didn't think this one was gonna happen for me, but as long as I get my back tag tomorrow, I'm there. Vaughn old buddy, you know I'll be at your place plenty early.
Hey guys just a heads up, the ice on the ground down in that area is pretty heavy and maybe a set of creepers may be the order of the day if walking is to be done..Jason

Yep, Russ is my grandfather's brother.
I'm trying to make it up for Saturday, even though my new bow isn't here yet.
I will see if I can call Russ about hunting his place Saturday. It might be a little late in the game to work it out now. But if I can't work it out, I'll definitely talk to him about it for next year.
Ron, Are you going to be out doing some hunting on saturday?
Just got back from my bowyers house had to go check out the new bow I ordered last thursday. Its almost done maybe I'll be toting the new wood around on saturday. Shes a real bueaty tulip, rosewood, cherry and black and white phenolic radius cut riser. Keeping my fingers crossed......... Jason
Jason,
Unfortunately I won't be able to hunt Saturday because we're leaving Moday AM for the ATA show in Indy. I have about a months worth of work to do in the next four days. I would like to meet everyone for breakfast though.
Eric,
Did you ever come up to Russ' place for the old Centerville Rod and Gun club clam bakes? He hasn't had one in at least 20 years but, man! those were some great PowWows! I knew and worked for Russ' best friend, Jack Decker (passed this year)and my step-dad was Bruce "Bruno" Fulkrod (also passed) from Dave's Bar and Grill in downtown Branchville. He was another good friend of Russ'. I don't know Russ that well myself cause I was just a kid taggin along with the old man at the time. Russ is a very well known and well respected Sussex County good ol boy.
-Ron
:archer: :goldtooth:
Maybe we can meet at 6, have breakfast and give the deer some time to move from feeding areas to their bedding areas. That way no one will have to stumble around in unfamilliar woods in the dark. Another reason is if we start into the woods too early we will bump deer all over to map before they settle into their beds.It gets light around 7.
Reiner and I will be there. He is a Trad guy that used to be here on Trad Gang till his computer crashed. My other friend hasn't gotten back to me so I guess he's not going. I just got home from Reiner's home and he is stoked for this outting. I am stoked too and can't wait to have some fun with all you guys.
But seriously lets get a meeting time settled. I vote for 6AM.
Larry
6:00AM is fine with me............
Thank you Scott. Looking forward to seeing you Sat.
Larry
well it looks like I wont make it... my car not running good at all.
6AM sounds good to me to  Eat and head out for some fun :campfire: See you guys at 6.Sorry to hear that Sal,maybe on our next hunt
PETE
Hey Sal,
I was looking forward to meeting you. I feel bad beacause you helped us to get this thing started.
Larry
Just a thought here. If you guys have any of those radios bring them cause it will help organize the beginning and ends of the drives we are doing.
Larry
I have 2 motorola radios. Deer will be feeding as much as possible if this cold keeps up. I did see that Sat should be a little warmer though. Doesn't matter what time we meet for me, I'm just happy to meet every one and have a good day together.
i've got 4 radio's that i'll bring-----and 6:00am sounds great---see you guy's there!!!!
So that was you camping in my backyard!! Hey lodestar it only takes me 15 minutes to walk to that beaverpond. I look forward to meeting you Saturday. I guess it's 6am at Jumboland!! This is gonna be great!
Hey Tom, if you can convince them to meet you at Walpak you're more than welcome to SSS at my house. Like I said I'm just a few minutes from Jumboland and you can get right back to the Walpak Inn in no time.
Hey Vaughn Way cool offer! See ya Sat.
Larry
See you all at Jumboland 0600hrs
Vaughn thanks for the great offer . But seems that the wifes cousin John from New Hampshire [actually has a doctorate in wildlife Biology] and works for New Hampshire Dept of Fish and Game WOOOOFAAAA still grouse and other big critters up there!! MOOOOOOOSEE!! ROAD TRIP next year folks? Any way he wants to go to a resturant in Rivervale that he knows from when he was living in JERSEY. I can give you folks six good hours or so.I'm bringing the Hornes Traditionalist it has a Thunderhorn Boa quiver that holds four arrows VS my Shrew that has a three arrow Eagles Flight quiver. One more arrow!I should bring both so if someone wants to shoot one.... Bring an arrow and a blunt! Is ALEX coming I'll call him later.Hey Joe lookin' foward to meeting you and Bamboo! Hey you better bring some earplugs so you can get a good nights sleep you did say Scott snores pretty good didn't you?
Hey Tom, was hoping to see that Turkey Creek you have. May be another time. Look forward to finally meeting you. Sounds like we have quite a crew. Should be a great time.
Have we decided on treestands or no treestands?
finally got a chance to sneak on the computer...27 hours down 9 hours left and i get to go home LOL.
0600 sounds good to me.
i have 2 radios ill bring (if i remember em)
also fletched up some brand new 2016s while at work...gonna try and get a few woodies done when i get home tomorrow but we'll see how tired.

no tree stand for me im hunting from the ground.
Hey Deadsmple,
And we are neighbors, and I think I know you, I'm Chuck, I live right down the road about 2 miles from you.
Sharpster, You mean Jack Decker the surveyor?
heya guys we may have a few guys from newjerseyhunter.com as well.
Hi,
I heard about this on the NJH site. I plan on joining you and look forward to meeting like minded archers. I'll be checking for any time changes but I assume it is 6:00 am at Jumboland, right?
-John
john sounds good...whats your other handle?
Chuck,
Yes Sir, Jack was indeed a surveyor. (and a bit of a legend in his own right)!
I assume that you knew him? Send me a pm.
It sounds like you guys are growing into a mob! I'm not picking up the tab tomorrow!
-Ron
deadbolt, my handle on NJH is sarvaggio. Look forward to meeting everyone on Saturday!
Man,
I can't wait for the pictures next week....
That Bentpole is quite computer savvy...
Hey Chuck, do we have a mutual friend, Roman? If you are who I think you are...When did you go trad? I sure hope I can say I had a hand in that decision. In any case come on and join us Sat morning 6am at jumboland. Wow this is too much, I'm getting blindsided by all the neighbors I never knew I had
Bucky,
The way we were thinking the day we scouted was that we would hunt on the ground so we could travel light and set up quickly.
Larry
This is going to be good - never knew there were that many trad guys in the area. :archer:
Yea sounds like a great group! Just finished fletching up my first set of arrows...they aren't perfect but they will fly. Lets hope we all get some blood on our fletching come tomorrow!
Wow - no trouble at all finding those arrows in the snow! Looks good Tom!
Deadbolt, with the size of this group if we all get bloody arrows there won't be any deer left. Man we have a big enough crew to start our own event.
I hope you guys get a ton of action and be safe.I used to work down that way and thats some cool country.Good luck and have a blast.
Izzy
Just caught this thread don't get here much. Would liked to have meet up with you guys.
I assume from the posts you'll be hunting in the Flatbrook-Roy WMA down the dirt road and by the Roy Bridge. Not sure if the bird hunters are still pounding those areas but if you get in the thick stuff early you just might get some action.
Good luck to you all and be safe.

Picking up the new longbow tonight just for the occasion. Can' wait to meet you guys. Like someone else mentioned earlier, did'nt realize there were so many trad guys around here. It'll be nice to do this a few times a year maybe even set up something like a weekend away from Jersey doing the primitive camp / hunt thing. That would be the cats ass!!!!!

Not that I know of. It's been a good many years since I was up at Russ' place myself. Last time I was probably only about 9-10 years old.
Unfortunately, he's one of those relatives that you only see once every few years, mostly at big family events (weddings and funerals, mostly). My folks used to take my grandparents up to visit him maybe twice a year, but I don't think they've been up since my grandfather passed away.
I was going to call and ask about hunting his farm tomorrow, but the more I thought about it, the more I felt a little funny asking permission for 10 or more guys when I've never even hunted there myself. However, I'm going to try to hunt there next year, and then I'll see what I can do about opening that land up to us for next year.
Just spoke to Alex he'll be there. Alex is bringing his Widow. Jerry you can still shoot that TurkeyCreek, Larry is the proud new owner of it it's a sweet little bow . I'll see everyone at 6:00 at Jumboland WOOOFAAA! Eric looking foward to meeting you and the rest of the "new folks".
Eric,
Understood. Certainly would not be appropriate to ask under the circumstances.
Anyway, it's not like there's any shortage of open land to hunt, right Deadbolt?
-Ron
Packed and ready to go.No treestand for me.Got my 51# Mahaska recurve and my new 285 grain snuffers!

Cmon Ron you know there no land or deer in Jersey :bigsmyl: :biglaugh:
Good luck guys. Take it easy at Jumboland. Make sure you take lots of pics.
See y'all in the morning!
fyrfyter, It's 10:07pm I just got home and saw Your post... Thanx dude, but I'm about dead, I have a old now for 2 days... hacking up some bad stuff.... Don't want to scare off any deer up there..... again thanx Man.
Hi Guys,
Man what a day we had! A total of 19 guys showed up today. Two could not hunt with us for reasons more important than hunting. Good to see a couple resopnsable guys in this day and age. Don't worry guys we will get together for another hunt soon I hope.
From what I understand we moved a lot of deer around. I'm not sure of the count but think it may be over 30. I had to leave before the last drive and up till then no one had taken a shot at a deer. They were either to far or had too much brush in the way or they were running past at warp factor 9.
I met a couple nice guys today. Joe Skip it was a pleasuer to meet you. Jerry Jeffers it was good to meet you and to share my pick up with you. I hate riding alone. I can't remember everyone's name that was there but there wasn't a lemmon in the bunch. I'd be honored to go hunting with any one of you guys again.
A couple guys took some pictures and I hope that they post a few to share.
Well I'm off to a hot shower. I can't wait for our next hunt together!
Larry
Great fun today guys. Actually, we pushed over 40 deer today. Tweak the drives a little, and I'm sure a stander will be in a position to shoot. Remember, alot of these drives were virgin drives - I think we did well for the first runs. As always, anyone I meet from this site is the cream of the crop. Glad to put some faces on handles..........
Great fun indeed Scott... I'm sorry I missed the morning hunt, but after spending just a little time with this great bunch of guys, I can't wait to do it again, the whole day this time. Having 7 pretty relaxed deer 30 yards away from me on that last drive at last light, was exciting. Too bad there was a lot of brush between us. I was glad to put faces on the handles as well.
Alex
Today was AWESOME. I will put pics up when my daughter gets home.
Glade everyone had a great time... hopefully I can make the next one....
Well, it sure was a great day. I was so happy to finally get the chance to meet a bunch of you. As mentioned before, cream of the crop, a real bunch of straight up gents. Here are a few of the motley bunch after the first drive of the morning. I think there was 12 deer that came out the side. (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f196/jjeffer/1stdrive.jpg)
Here is Joe and Larry after a pre lunch drive. I saw two rack bucks and about 6 doe. Too far off for shots.
Here is the gang at Walpack, hope I didn't cut any one off. Must have moved the camera when I pushed the button.

Again, great time, great group. :clapper:
Hey Joe I love your hat in that pic with Larry, looks familiar to me.....
Looks and sounds like you all had a pretty good day.......
David
Here's some pics of the drive and the areas we drove.

Man who the hell would use such bright feathers..people are gonna start to think otherwise about that wise guy :D :D
(http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f137/swankeer/tradgag.jpg)
As always had a great time! I hope I can make the next one and once we get back in the woods and tweak them drives like scott said we are gonna have some blood for sure!
I just arrived home about an hour ago. Drove in a sleet/hail storm....A super day with a fine bunch of Trad bowhunters. Then again, what would you expect!
The ice and snow made a few drives tricky as a few of us "hit the canvas" when working our way uphill. Plenty of deer were moved around and although no shots, we didn't do bad for a bunch of guys who just met and worked areas "virgin" to us.
Your Jersey guys have to work on the compound shooter...gotta convince him if he had a stick bow, those 6 deer that ran by him or I should say almost over him, he probably would have taken one. 12 deer busted out on that first drive!
The 2 rack bucks that ran by Jerry...he watched them bed down roughly 80 yds away...6 does followed the big boys into the thickets. Just too crunchy to make another attempt to move them around. The best part...not one person complained or griped about the terrain, weather, making the drives and we all got to see quite a few different bows. Real neat....
Thanks again fellas for an enjoyable hunt and this could turn out to be yearly event :clapper: :goldtooth:
Just one suggestion...next year, lets get Bentpole and Bucky to meet us (with their trucks) at the end of each drive...They could set up a small grill and have dogs, burgers, etc, hot/cold drinks......ready for us. Like the Kid from Brooklyn sez..."Think about it!"
Just came home from the dinner with Momma's cousins from New Hampshire [yeh kinda late I know they had to finish all the bottles of wine they brought LOL]I had a great morning.Alex sorry I missed you we will hunt together.Guys it was my pleasure hunting with you folks. You couldn't find a better bunch of guys and we got along like we've known each other for ever. Joe you should have said something earlier about hot food and beverages Bucky and I would have brought our SABRETT Hot Dog Wagon with the red onion sauce.I wish I could have been there all day for sure.Glad we had action. It's a great piece of land.Yeh Joe I know Gadget John needs to make the switch he has one of my Chaparral Kaibabs he just has to get a little more comfortable with it.What do you mean next year I'm hoping to get together next Saturday! We know there's deer up there right? Thanks guys for a great morning had a blast.I hope everyone made it home safe and sound.
Man I'm so bummed. I caught this thread this morning. Was sitting here going the 5th thats next week oh wait thats right now duh!! Would love to hook up if you guys do it again. Any of you planning on 3-d shoots this year would love to meet up with you guys.
The pictures came out great Jerry and George.I was in such a hurry I didn't get a chance to take any.I'm glad Alex found you folks!

Yep, that's me next to Deadbolt. I was already packed up for the ride home when someone suggested getting a group pic.
What a day!
Nothing like sharing the woods with such a great bunch of guys. And seeing a good number of deer to boot.
Even though nobody drew blood, it was one of my most memorable days in the woods. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one!
QuoteOriginally posted by Recurve50LBS:

I don't think I've ever seen deer move quite that fast. They went by me at about 40 yards. I tried to count them, but they were running so hard I couldn't count fast enough. :biglaugh:
I think the woods were just too noisy. On a quieter day, when the drivers could ease through the woods without making too much noise, we would have had much better luck.
Somebody left a pair of Lacrosse boots at the Walpack Inn. I have them.
Whoever they belong to, drop me a PM or email with your address and I'll get them in the mail to you.
Eric you hit the nail on the head. Very noisy they heard us coming too soon that enabled them to get up to WARP Factor 9. That Jeep of yours was the hit of the day. You better watch Pete non-typical doesn't try to steal it on you!I hope the warm temps can help us out and get rid of the CRUNCH for next Saturday.I'm glad you made the trip up.
Yeh that first drive almost put Bucky and Gadget John in the Hospital. Good thing Tom-deadbolt [the EMT Dude] was with us!
A couple more pics. Guys I cant tell you all the last time I had such a great time hunting and tromping round the country. All I can say is Thanks and we must do it again. Great to have finaly met and put faces to the names. Jerry we will definately be getting up on the mountain with Vaughn and get us one of those mountain bucks.

Tom, I think you got all the names correct from the line up pic. Glad you did because I couldn't remember a couple of guys until you posted the names. We started with several more then that. I think the locals were wondering what kind of army we were. LOL. Hope I can do it again soon. Larry, thanks for letting me ride with you. Joe, you are a real gentleman. Jason, had a great time chatting with you during the lunch break. Hope to spend more time on the mountain with you (rattle snake). Mike, great hanging with you at the Walpack set up. Again, very one was first class people.
great pic's.... how many deer where taken?

Jason I just saw that picture of Gadget John walking up the icey road that's why Bucky and I call him GADGET JOHN.
Hey those are some wonderful pictures! Thank you guys for remembering to bring your cameras. I'd like to repete what a few of you said about this group. Top notch, first class and not one gripe from a single person during the whole day. We did do well pushing the deer around considering most of us had never been in those woods before. No one got lost either. Boy I've never seen so many bear tracks in my life! Guess they either were run off by our drives or they flew south for the winter. I would surly like to have another group hunt before winter bow ends. I'm having too much fun now and I don't want the fun to end.
Oh I have a small charcoal grill I would be willing to bring if the group wants to do a tail gate thing. Something to think about anyway.
Larry
Did you guys come across any bird hunters and or kick up any birds?
There were some bird hunters around...heard shots throughout the day.
One of the corn fields we walked across had quite a few pheasant tracks, but I didn't hear anybody mention seeing any birds.
Real glad to hear you guys had a great time. Sure wish I could've come but that's just the way it is sometimes. At least I was able to meet up and have breakfast with you fine gentlemen.
Jason, give me a call and we'll hook up. Even if we just get together to shoot in the yard. Maybe we can even get Frank to join us.
Hey Larry, I know what you mean, winter bow seems to go by too quick for me. Just when things start clicking, it's over.
Oh boy I almost forgot to thank Dave and fyrfyter43 Eric for finding my lost radio. Dave didn't make our group pict cause he took a stand up the hill from the place we took our pict.
Hey Vaughn, Maybe next monday we can get together. Go up on the mountain do some stll hunting. Hope you got your roof dilema worked out. I'll give you a call later this week. Jason

I just checked...they're Lacrosse Alphas - size 11. They look like they've only been worn a time or 2.
After everybody left, they were on the ground next to where lodestar's truck was parked.
I had a really good time yesterday. FYI, I was the guy with the funny hat and clothes :) I have never seen more deer at one time. I saw the deer running in fron of me across the road and it sounded like a truck coming down the road. There had been a truck that drove up the road after we posted and I thought it was that truck when the deer were running right in fron of me. There had to be over 10 of them because I counted at least that and there were more in front leading the charge. Who knew they would cross the road and run passed Eric and Pete :banghead: .
Anyway, it was great and hope to do it again. Do you guys think that there will be another get together this winter season?
All I can say is WHAT A DAY!!! Like stated B4 what a group of guys.I had a great time w/all.I dont remember ever walkin that much in a day.Hey fyr, watch were you park that jeep(LOL)NICE.I think there was a total of 40-50 deer seen yesterday, not bad at all.Sorry you couldnt make it Vaughn & Sal and to see you leave early Tom.I think this time we'll make a list on here so we get an idea whos comin. We should bring food & drink for a mid-day lunch.I have a coleman stove.Tom thanks for the deer snacks  and next time take the batterys outta those arras, they were brite(lol). We should try to get a PART II together, maybe this sat.Had a great time and hope to do it again w/you guys.

That Jeep's been a project for my son and I over the last 3.5 years. Between all the work that has gone into it, and the occasional offroad trip, we've really had some good times together.
I do drive it everyday, but it gets tiring for longer trips. And I avoid highways with it at all costs.
This Saturday sounds good for me.
Pete we can call Domino's pizza and see if they can find us in twenty minutes!I'm surprized that those electric arrows of Tom's didn't prevent those deer from sneaking in between you and Tom. John I like that hat of yours! Wasn't it you and Eric that stopped me from sliding down that ridge in bear alley? I would've hit the canvas for sure.I'm game for Saturday hope I don't have to work! Folks Cat Like Reflexes!!!!!
Forgot to mention...Deadbolt...with those pink dipped, pink fletched arrows, you are no officially a member of "Team Pink". I personally voted you in....its good to see another bowhunter using hot pink besides me. I left mine home in favor of the blaze orange Super Slams for this hunt.

Only thing that stopped me was a big tree at the bottom of the hill after i crashed into it LOL...that was me screaming like a little girl going 40mph down the hill on my back LOL.
Tom you and Pete are welcome to hunt with me anytime! I was laughing so much yesterday next time we hunt together I might have to wear DEPENDS!!!!
Tom, Eric and I were the one's that stopped you from sliding down the hill.
Tom-Bentpole, I'm hooked now. I will be back this week to get more acquainted with beautiful Sussex County, and hopefully do another group hunt on the weekend. Won't be missing another meet at Jumboland, rest assured.

Lucky the US marshals didnt catch wind of that gathering, all of Americas most wanted in one place.
This Jersey Hunt has all the makings of an annual event...this is how Shawn started with the Bunny Hunt! :scared:
Bentpole...That Sabrett truck sounds good. Get 5 or 10 bucks a man...that would buy enough water, gatorade, hamburgers, rolls etc...for a great lunch. Setup on a dead end road...throw out a few targets to shoot at during lunch....cool...
I agree, Joe. this could be a nice thing
Did you guys see the size/length of our caravan/convoy? It was a good thing we car pooled where we could.I bet all the locals were wondering about us and not to mention all the bird hunters that passed with strange looks on their faces.
I think there were even a few behind me..... (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/skrew/032.jpg)
Deadbolt, thanks again for the delicious snacks at Walpack. That really hit the spot after a long day of walking on all that ice.

Hey the hot dog cart was a joke guys!If we stop and start cooking, eating , shooting, lunch time we'll waste valuable whitetail chasing time. I know I don't hunt enough. If you folks want to get together after the season ends we could meet at the archery/shotgun range at Wallpack before the INN on the left hand side. I don't know if your allowed to target shoot bow and arrow on the Delaware Water Gap National Rec Area. After Winter Bow ends I don't care if we get a circus tent, high wire act, popcorn machine, slurpee machine dancing girls and a DJ or Led Zepplin.. But please lets get some deer!!!! I WILL BE THERE! [if I don't have to work]Just my 2 cents folks.Hunt while you can hunt Quick lunch and back to hunting. YES?
Tom, I got emails that I received PMs from you last night, but when I logged in here, there are no PMs.
I'll send you an email, but here's a link to some Jeep pics for you and everybody else that was interested. They were taken over the past couple of years at 2 different offroad parks in PA.

Tom, sorry you won't be there Saturday. Have fun at the Birthday Party and good luck hunting down south. Hey does that mean Pete will only be half as funny without his partner?

Larry
Larry, I think it would be great to bring your son. I remember when I was 10 and my Dad had me doing drives with the guys. I would be so excited. I can't imagine any one objecting.
Larry, I wish I had been taken on a hunt like this when I was 10 !!! by all means, bring him. I'll even carry his lunchbox if you want :D
just make sure your kid has that box locked... Alex may get hungry. so are we going to call this hunt NJ Winter Bow part 2? If so maybe we can do Yearly 2 part hunts.
Thanks for the kind words guys. I'll be seeing Andrew on Thursday at his school. He is competing in the National Geography Bee again this year and has asked me to be there to support him.He should be pretty excited that he can come along with all of the Trad Gang guys. He'll want to bring his longbow along to target shoot along with us during the day between drives.
Larry
how was it done at the first hunt? can someone brake it down....
Larry, by all means bring your son. I wish I could bring my son along, but he has so much going on with Scouts that I've had to switch a few weekends with his mother.
hey guys hope ya'll have a good time...pete will be just as funny LOL.
Larry tell Andrew I said good luck at that Geography Bee. Tell him to bring the trophy Saturday so he can show everyone.Sal we break into groups, more standers than drivers and we set up at different spots. So far it doesn't look like I'll be working Saturday.

Eh maybe I will be able to sneak away for a half day...but I'm going to pull another 36 hour shift we'll see what happens LOL.
You folks are too much I think I just soiled my computer chair! Jerry HMMMM drive all day for a chance to sit behind the cemetary again ? I was going to let Joe Skipp empty his quiver there! John,Eric, Pete, and Tom had action on that same drive from different deer too correct? I hope Joe brings his Pink arrows this week.If that corn is still up I think they'll still be there. What time did we do that push does anyone remember? Do you folks want to do the same pushes again? Or try something new? I think we should do the same ones just a little bit smarter if you get my drift. The Bear Alley push we were too spread out Jerry had those three deer double back on him towards the Deleware.

Larry
I had a feeling that's who they belonged to, especially when nobody else claimed them.
As long as my daughter doesn't share her cold with me, I'll have them Saturday.
Tom, I think it was probably about 10 when we made that push. By the time we all got back by the cemetery, it was about 11:15-11:30.
I think if we play our cards right, we can make the same drives, plus add one or 2. Depends on what we do for lunch.
maybe try a 2 line drive.
front line spread out & back line cover gaps...
/\\/\\/\\/\\/\\/\\/\\ each point would be a person..
Also to let everyone know... I walk really slow, because of my pacemaker/defibrillator... I don't need to get any shocks on this hunt...
Off to the doctor. I might have a sinus infection,we'll see.
well looks like ill be coming guys LMAO! pdk from ther site here emailed me so he will be following me up in the morning but I'll only hunt half day.
And that drive with the 10 deer was around 10ish.
Well alright Tom! The ICE [and crunchy stuff] should be all gone young man. What about DAVE the retired school teacher anyone hear from him?
Do you fellas have any room left for a New York Bowhunter???? If so....I'm in for Saturday!
what will i use as amn excuse to fall down the sie of the mountain then? LMAO!!!
Which one is chuck? describe the guy Im horrible with names!
cmon joe!!!!
hopefully ill have new pink cedars ready to go!!!
Always room for you Joe Skipp! Jerry said he wanted to sit behind the cemetary again Joe, what do you think? He wasn't saving arrows last Saturday was he?

Hey Joe, you are going down Friday night again?
Tom, I think I will need Joe to help me cover that draw. I'm sure we could both get shots there.
Tom...this time both Jerry and I will be in the woods 100 yds apart. Give him one more day with me and he will never again have a problem dropping the string on big game...LOL...I don't think he has that problem now!!
Tom...I think its important for the standers to know THEY HAVE TO BE QUIET. I know this was our first time and confusion was abundant but easing into the woods and on stand, quietness is a must. Even the drivers should push without calling to each other.
The key is to get the deer moving ahead somewhat slowly...maybe even pausing to look behind. You really don't want them racing past the standers at 100 mph. Alex will tell you...the last drive we put on, he had 7 deer that really weren't spooked come by. If they were closer, I'm sure Alex would have had a shot.
I think this second time may be a charm. We know what to do...we're familiar with the woods...the "carpet" should be quieter, no ice...has the makings of a good day. Lets draw some blood!!!
Joe, I'm ready to get the arrows flying.
Back from the doctor. He said I've never seen anybody have such a bad cold. He gave me some meds and said drink alot of water.Hopefully I'll have some strength back. I feel pretty wiped. It sucks that us regular guys have to work.Wish I could stay home and rest.I guess thats for the rich.
Hey Jerry and Joe,
I'd like to cover a piece behind the cemetary with ya. Maybe we should get a few guys to sit in those islands in the corn field too.
Larry

Larry
I'll join you gentleman, I'll be a island sitter
Honestly, I don't care if I drive or post. I had so much fun last time, and that's all I'm looking to do this time. I don't want to start a mess saying who wants to sit here and there.
Sitting in the islands may provide tough shooting. I doubt the deer will pause long enough for a shot there. They're gonna hit that cut field running and head straight for the cover on the other side. Better to have standers in the far side cover or along the side across the road where they flew past Pete.
Looks like you guys have another good group for this Saturday. Count me in, I just got the okay from my better half. Jumboland at 6am?
yep
 :archer: :coffee:
I didn't get to go last week or for the scouting trip, but I plan on meeting up at Jumboland. Looking forward to the trip and meeting fellow tradtional hunters from NJ.
I don't care whether I sit or stand. Just tell me where to go or sit. I am sure we'll all have a good time.
I googled Branchville lodging. I come up with 2 choices:
1. Cobmin Ridge Motel
2. Forest Motel
both on 206. which one should I go to if I come up Friday night?
thanks for your feedback
Tom...bring some more photos of the waitress. You guys should have seen the pics...she even yelled at him..."Don't show them!!" Are they calling for rain on Sat? Lets hope we don't get P...ed on too hard.
Alex B.,
I would not really recommend staying in the two places you mentioned. In fact i would probably advise against having anything to do with either one. You might want to try the Econo Lodge(973-383-3927), or the Holiday Motel(973-786-5260) or the new Holiday Inn Express(973-940-8888) all of which are in Newton on route 206. All of which are around 20 minutes from jumboland.

Hey pat ill meet ya on the parkway at around lets say 0330? I get on the parkway at exit 89 so I'm not to far from you. What kinda vehicle do you drive so I know what I'm looking for? You want to meet at a rest stop or on the shoulder?
Alex listen to Vaughn about the Hotels/Motels those two might have a load of undisirables whooping it up all night long.Floosey women and such, hey maybe.... nah. Alex your going to need a good night sleep! I'm don't care either, walking in the woods is good enough for me.Joe your right about the noise I figure on the snow being gone or mushy.Try to sneak right up on them.George you know what I always say...Vaughn glad to have you with us Saturday.WOOOOFAAAA Saturday Morning! Gotta bring cameras guys and I have to bring some pictures.Saturday I'll carry the Shrew.
thanks a lot for the info, Vaughn and Tom
bringing my camera for sure
Alex
im way to accident prone to bring my camera LOL...but I'll def be bringing some lighter gear to push in.
Man oh man I just looked at the pictures again on Page 9. Come on Saturday!!!
Larry, your son will have some company Saturday. My ex-wife called today and said she can't take the kids this weekend, so my son will be with me.
Sal, by any chance do you have one of those hitch-haul trays for a 2" receiver? The ride home might be interesting if we're bringing home meat.
I have one in storage, I'll see if I can get to it on friday.
hey fyrfyter i have one of them if ya need me to bring it...i lost the cotter pin though. i could hit home cheapo after my shift in teh AM and try to pick one up if ya need it.
Tom, I'll leave a post if I got mine out of storage.... if I don't post anything can you bring Your's?
if i can find a cotter pin for it...ill let ya know 2morrow. not sure if home depot in my area has em ive checked but they never did.
Hey Deadbolt (Tom) You can use a large hex head bolt, washers and a hex nut to secure your carrier to your hitch in place of the cotter pin. Just a thought Pal.
I was at work last night and Reiner stopped by to talk about Saturday's hunt. He says that he can't make Jumbo Land at 6 but he will be able to catch up with the group someplace.
I also may be arriving later than 6 because I am working nights this week and I don't safely function with less than 4 hours sleep.
I also saw my son yesterday and asked him if he wants to come with us. He is still undecided but I will be finding out this afternoon when he gets off from school. I'll tell him that Eric is bringing his son too.
Larry

nice size group. well it's after 8:00 pm and I feel like a kid in a Archery Store.... I might get 1/2 hr sleep tonite.
Hey guys, knock the snot out of them. I'm back to working saturdays so I wont be able to be there. Had thoughts of feeling sick tomarrow but hat just would'nt be rite this early in the new year since I did that already this week. I did have a great day though. Vaughn, I'll be up on the mountain in the am on monday if your interested.......Jason
well I went out with my dad this morning and saw nothing now I'm sitting here wishing we would have went with you guys. How do you guys feel about training wheels (my dad shoots a compound)?Maybe next time.
Hoping you guys did well. Went out this morning and got a nice size doe a little after 9:00am. At least 12 paraded by me before I picked one out. This time of year they are yarded up and you typically see a bunch together or nothing.
After the sun came up it turned out to be a 10 out of 10 morning weather wise, especially for this time of year. I usually take the flintlock out this time of year but with weather like this I grab the recurve and setup right on top of a main trail between feeding and bedding areas. Sometimes you get lucky.
Well? Well? What did you all get? Hope it was that big racker! Jason
Well I just got back. Let me first say I couldn't have asked to spend a day with a nicer bunch of guys. Great weather great day. Plenty of deer were moved but none came by me. I didn't see squat!! But i'm up for doing it again.
Hope you all got home safe.
Jerry Jeffer was MIA, Hey Jerry hope all is well, it's kinda unusual that you didn't atleast leave a note on the computer.
Hey Lodestar, I'll be up there for a few hours Monday before my boy gets home. I jumped a real nice ten friday morning up there. Hope one of us gets a shot at 'em.
Just got home saw about 16 deer & 1 Black bear was followed me for about 50yards. I had a Great time.
I would like to Thank everyone for coming & a Big Thanx to Eric for the ride... this is something we should do Yearly or maybe bi-yearly. I was thinking about a Fall Trad Gang Hunt & another one for the NJ Winter Bow Hunt... What does everyone think.
Vaughn, Jason just got home and had a quick bite to eat.Let me also say how great everyone got along all true gentleman for sure. I was happy to finally meet Alex, Joe and Sal and it was good to see the boys from last Saturday again I guess the deer knew us Trad Gangers were coming. Who told them? Well we did push some deer but we had more action last Saturday. The first push we moved a few , the second [1st] on Old Mine Road I think we only moved the one deer ? A spike no shots fired . The next Pete had a herd of 10 as soon as he went in on the "BEAR ALLEY" push he had them going the standers way but they changed direction and ran across the road. I pushed one past Mike and thought for sure it would go between Joe and Scott. The stinker had to double back on me and I had it about 40 yards in front of me.Down by Wallpack, I think Sal had 4 go past at 40 Yards? Then the final drive we found out a group of guys did the same drive as us 2 hours before? They pushed deer we found plenty of fresh sign there but no deer. Once the rest of the folks get home[safe and sound I hope] someone will post some pictures . I didn't take the camera out of the glove box I guess I was too busy. Larry's son Andrew and Eric's son Lee were both real troopers for the amount of walking they did . No complaining at all and we covered alot of land.It was a blast, I'm ready to do it again next week.Oh and weatherwise you couldn't ask for a nicer day in January.
Sorry guys, I really wanted to be there. Got some kind of bug that lasted most of the day. Couldn't stop any thing from coming out my back side. Vaughn, funny you mention jumping a buck on the mountain, I had dreams all night of going up there instead. Well, may be another time folks.
just got home...Man, What a day! For all of you not familiar with Sussex Co. New-Jersey, please don't come, it's no good, everybody is mean and dangerous, there are no Deer, no Wildlife, no scenery, NOTTING !!! .........NOT! Seriously, one of the best hunting days in my life. finally meeting Bentpole-Tom, Mysticguido-Sal, SteveD, Deadsample-Vaughn ( missed Jerry, though) and seeing the rest of the guys from last week was really cool. The hunt, although "meatless", was amazing. Today, from my eyes, (aside from witnessing all the deer and bear signs/poop), this region, God's country, was vintage Sussex, and at times looked like the cornfields-checkered woodlots of Iowa and Illinois, my hills in Garrison NY, the Elk-rich mountains of S.Colorado, and even the river bottoms of E. Kansas ( like the river bottom Sal was in when he bumped into the bear today)
As far as I'm concerned, 2 great things happened today ( in order of importance):
1. I made friends
2. I have to budget my non-resident NJ license until I die, hopefully at the tender age of 103 years old, like Bentpole's Grandmother-in-law
thanks everyone for an unforgettable day
alex
Some notables...
1. Kudos to the young guys..they hung in their tough on those nasty, thick covered drives and never complained.
2. Ryner...the only hunter I know who hunts in Snow Camo when there isn't any snow on the ground! Then he sends all us old guys up Cardiac Hill.....Thanks Pal....
3. Sal...The only STANDER I know that became Directionally Challenged when leaving the woods.
The road was 70 yds behind him...and he had about 7 other guys all around him...Yup...we had to reach him via the radio and get him headed back to the trucks...But he gets a pass because he had pink feathers on his arrows...You Da Man...
4. Tom...aka Bentpole...aka Stiff Rod...the man coordinates everything. He drives, he sits, he gets turned around....he does a great job with the bunch he has to work with...Hats off to ya...
5. "The Swashbuckler"...I wanted him to kill a deer so badly just so I could have my picture taken with him! Wear the Scarf next time! Arrrgghh!!!
6. Bucky...he changes clothes faster than Clark Kent...he went from his hunting clothes to that Designer Jogging outfit in less than 3 minutes! Those sneakers have to go Buck..those flashing lites on the sides are for kids.....
We are getting better at this..great bunch of guys working together...getting smoother and quieter...
:clapper:
A few pics with Captions...
Cardiac Hill behind me...these 55 yr old legs said NO to that last 100 yd climb. Five minutes after this pic....I was asleep...

Alex my Grandmother {Moms Mom] lived to be 106.So I should be able to hunt until I'm at least 100 RIGHT? Jerry that's why they sell corks! LOL I learned that YOU are a deer magnet.Jerry = plenty of deer. Sorry you couldn't make it.Joe I'm glad you and Alex made it home safe and sound you two had the furthest to go. Joe fell asleep!? No wonder you didn't feel that 12 pointer licking your face.Great pictures Joe! Where are we going next Saturday!!??

If Your talking about the last drive I was pushing the river bottom....The other drive I came out in the wrong area was because I was in Awe.... Truly Great looking Hunting Ground
Sorry Tom, 106 it is! Joe, Cardiac hill was so steep, that when I finally sat down in my spot behind a Yew tree (imagine the luck) just below ridgeline, I kept sliding down the hill, and, when the thermals started to shift, I had to get up and "stalk" another patch of thickets 25 yards downhill, ,down wind of the deer trail. I have the coordinates of that yew tree BTW.
[/QUOTE]If Your talking about the last drive I was pushing the river bottom....The other drive I came out in the wrong area was because I was in Awe.... Truly Great looking Hunting Ground [/QB][/QUOTE]
Same here, Sal, I was in Awe too. Great looking hunting ground indeed
If we do a Fall Bow hunt (going by 2007-2008 digest) Zones 2,5 & 7 all start second Saturday in September... With unlimited tags (anterless)w/ 1 buck. That should cover Whittingham, Pequest & Clinton WMA's, these are just the first ones to come to mind... I have been to these 3 WMA's but haven't hunted them.... If some knows better areas, Do Tell.
Alex, Joe, I'm glad to see you made it back over the border safe.
Jerry, sorry to hear about your @$$.
Now for a quick bite to eat and I'm off to work.Hmm maybe I shoulda took a nap like Joe and Larry :banghead:
Still waiting to hear from the rest of the folks. This is the latest I slept in a long time. I must have been tired.Mike C. congrats on your doe! I forgot to mention the TWO FRESH SCRAPS I saw walking yesterday also! One on each side of Old Mine Road. Bucky has some pictures I can't wait to see. Sal if you want to do a group hunt next fall we have to go where the land is.If we have the same amount of guys there's only one place to go. The same places we hunted yesterday. We only touched the tip of the iceberg on Old Mine Road. Across 206 you have Stokes State Forest, plus from the Milford Bridge to the Delaware Water Gap Bridge. All that land including, Flatbrook/Roy, Worthington State Forest. Look at a NJ Map and see.We weren't able to go down Struble Road because they close it after January 1st. There's plenty of places to hunt Bud. I would do a group hunt in that area because of the amount of land.Don't forget how many folks we had yesterday. If anyone wants to do a post season scouting trip let me or Bucky know. We LOVE being up there. Like Alex said yesterday this is God's Country for sure Vintage Sussex County. It hasn't and won't be touched for years to come.Everyone can get to know the area better. You can still take a buck and a doe regular season. No early season.Post season trip; bring all your bows, targets, food, drink, we can go to the State Archery Range up there and have a " NJ Trad Gang late winter get together." Wives/girlfriends,and kids even.Folks I just wanted to say Thanks again for a great day in the woods. Alex, thank you for the CD and Reiner thanks for those carbons. I hope to get out today and check them out.
heya guys had a blast but man was i beat. Up at 0300 didn't get home last night till 0100. I knocked right out!!
I had a blast with everyone top notch guys...sorry to hear ya'll didn't get to tag anything.
Met some new faces and found some great land. Honestly walking through them woods myself and pat found some amazing early season hunting spots...hell I may make the trip up there every once in a while to hunt next year. There was a ton of sign and some perfect setups!
Pat hope you made it home OK and when ever you want let me know you can always come by my house and shoot I got plenty of targets and 2 elevated shooting platforms to practice from. Hey maybe we can get some scouting in this year together show me that state park LOL.
On a side note I had ticks ALL FRIGGIN OVER ME! When I got to my cousins house my ol man borrowed my jacket to go outside to have a smoke and this morning he found a tick embedded in his stomach. He yanked it out but the head stayed in...it must have just burried in b/c it hadn't started sucking blood yet. What are the odds of catching that lyme disease stuff? He is pretty paranoid right now.
What a great day! We might not have moved as many deer, but we sure had fun.
The amount of sign on cardiac hill was almost enough to make me want to climb it again. I side-hilled most of it about 25 yards from the top, following a trail that was worn down to dirt. At one point that hill was so high, Bucky looked like an ant with an orange hat, and I swore I could see Warren County.
I wish I had brought my camera...even just to get a picture of that cedar up in Bear Alley. That tree was clawed up higher that I could reach. The shredded bark was still on the tree and on the ground around it.
I think Lee put more miles on his boots than he has in the past year of Boy Scouts. He was asleep before we made it to 206. And after getting "lost" twice, he will be carrying a crow call next time.
Tom HOLY Cannoli Ticks! Didn't even think about them at all. Well from past experiance[had three on me two embedded one removed at Chilton Hospital]The Doctors told me it has to embedd and start sucking blood for 18 hours? They drink your blood and regurgitate back into your blood. Plus not all ticks carry LYME they can but not all do.We did walk threw some thick crap and MILD TEMPS. Everyone should check themselves today for sure. If he's worried go to the Emergency room for peace of mind don't wait for a rash or bullseye /flu like symptoms.Tick removal... put a drop of dishwashing soap on the tick wait a while take a soapy cottonball with dishwashing soap and gently wipe away. There was a Trad Gang thread on this subject a while ago.
bentpole, I know that area is very big & with all the signs I can tell there is lots of deer/bear up there. I just said the other zones because for the ones that hunt the early season ( before the State opener ) if they take 2 deer before doing a group hunt, They wont be able to hunt.... Not that that's a bad thing... They can still hang out & help do some driving.... I was just looking at the big picture...
Of what I saw in that river bottom... I feel that will be a great place in the fall to hunt... Boy was the high land down there thick....
Ticks: I had 2 walking on me. 1 I found when going to the last drive... it was very small. The second one was a bigger one when I got home.
Folks Check for Ticks!!Larry check Andrew and Eric check Lee I just put my clothes in the wash after being in the garage all night.Check all the CRACKS and CREVICES!!!!!
Yea Tom I was in some pretty nasty stuff in all the drives I did (im like a beagle i love that thick crap) and they were all over. My ol mans was just embedded but never started sucking blood so told him to relax and think nothing of it but I'll monitor him and if anything ill bring him to the ER.
Tom,
I wouldn't worry too much about lyme disease. Even if it is the right type of tick (Ixodes, or deer tick), it needs to have been feeding for 24 hours to transfer the spirochete( Borrelia burgdorferi for all you nerds like me out there) into your bloodstream. As long as he found them and has them off now he should be fine. Sounds great as far as practice and scouting goes. It's beautiful weather today and I'm tempted to skip out into the woods today for a walk, but unfortunately I have work and study to do. I ordered a Morrell bag target when I got back yesterday, since my block target is on it's last legs. I stayed awake until 1am, which makes for 42 hours straight - 6 shy of my record. I don't want to do that again anytime soon. I work a 27 hour shift on thursday and will probably get into the woods in the evening after a little nap. The weather is supposed to turn crappy this week. Cold and wet, but hopefully quiet. I'll give you a buzz about shooting.
Quote"The Swashbuckler"...I wanted him to kill a deer so badly just so I could have my picture taken with him! Wear the Scarf next time! Arrrgghh!!!
I wish I killed a deer. I would have taken pics with everyone! I was glad I could provide some laughs for everyone. It's good to have a few good laughs and enjoy the time in the woods if you're going to come home emptied handed after a day of hunting.
Sal's throwing around the idea of a fall hunt. Hmmm...maybe I'll wear my breech clout  :scared:
Hey pat thanks for the info bro i appreciate it!
I was tempted to go for a walk in the woods but had to much to do around the house. If the winds work out for me I'll be out tomorrow morning. Can't have a south wind when I hunt down south but thats all we ever get LOL!
Them bag targets are great and for field points they will last ya a lifetime!
Here's some pics from yesterday.

I started driving deer for my family on the farm when I was about 7 years old,and I been a Ground Hound ever since!!!!!
I may just have to get the lowdown from old Skipper and see about gettin' me a N.J. license next year :archer:
George that camera of yours has to be the best 100 buck camera out there. Great shots Bud! Man oh man I feel like taking the week off and hunting.Hey we haven't heard from Pete yet he took the group shot.Alex, at least you tried to take pictures I was the one telling everyone to bring the cameras and I didn't take mine out of the glove box. YUCK good thing you didn't step in that.We saw almost as much Bear scat as we did deer scat... Nah I don't think so.Come on down Woodchucker!
What a great time yesterday w/a great bunch of guys!! The weather cooperated, just the deer didnt(lol).I think they have a PC and monitor this thread :smileystooges: It aint easy :knothead: Maybe next yr do a campin hunt :campfire: !! We can camp out at Worthington, which is minutes away.Something to think about.Hey Joe,dont let Scott influence you so much the night B4 next time.wHATS THE DEAL W/THE SNOW CAMO.He must have hit the bar B4 comin(lol)

Just a few pics.
Tom,
I was thinkin' the same thing: Where is Pete, with the group shot??
ooops, there it is!! Great shots Pete
Yeh Ha right there! OK Pete. We were worried!Bottom group shot Left to right-Sal- mystic guido, Lee [Erics son]John-vision hunter] back to camera,Alex,Me,Eric-fyrfyter43, Larry-recurve50lbs,Andrew sitting [Larry's son]George-bucky,Pete-nontypical, Reiner, Joe, Vaughn-deadsimple,Mike-bamboo, Steve, and Joe. Sorry I forgot Staten Island Steve's handle and Joe's handle.Scott-southpawshooter took that picture.
Hey Guys. My son had a great time yesterday. I also had a great time too. It was nice to be able to share some time outdoors with my son and my friends. Today after we came home from church Andrew asked to go outback and do some bow shooting. It's been a while since he has asked me to shoot bows together. He has already asked me to plan another outting for next week, either with you guys or just with me.
Hey Alex thank you for bringing me that broad head. I'll give it a few test shots asap.
Thank you to Tom (Bentpole) for organizing these trips. Reiner and Pete and anyone else who had shown us some of their hot spots.
Larry
I sat here today and had to laugh...that last drive you fellas did was brutal...the climb wasn't a piece of cake either for us standers..
Then...we find out..after we finish...that a group of bowhunters pushed the same piece of land 2 hrs earlier and drove all the deer out!
It just wasn't meant to be....
Tom...maybe you should drive walking backwards. This way when a deer sneaks around you, you'll spot him and get off a shot. Also...by walking backwards, that bedded deer would have assumed you can't see him and you just might have gotten off a shot!
Pete...I believe your right. Ever since I've been hanging around Scott...I've noticed I'm getting more forgetful, wake up with headaches, and I'm not seeing the amount of deer I usually do...gonna start cuddling up to Bamboo more....
Stiff Rod...we notice that when we are walking from one spot to another and trailing everyone...
Seems the last line in front of us is usually Pete, Bamboo, Larry and Jimmy...and all Tom talks about is "If I had a line like that in High School, I would have gained over 100 yds a game." OK Al Bundy....then Bucky broke the news to us later....Stiff Rod was the friggin water boy!!! :scared:
Think about this fellas...how about sometime in March, we pick a Saturday, meet someplace for an afternoon of eating, BS'ing about the hunts and just having a good ol time....
Larry, you're welcome, dude!
Tom-Bentpole, thanks for showing me your honeyholes man. I promise I'll never abuse... :bigsmyl: ... do you trust me?... not really, heh?
So when is the next trip?
Larry, it sounds like this hunt sparked Andrew's interest in bows and hunting again. Glad to hear it!
Joe if I drive walking backwards I would have been where I was!Yeh Yeh waterboy LOL the team trainer was bigger than me. He's just jealous cause Clifton used to kick the crap out of Garfield all the time.Still can't beleive you didn't see that deer Joe.You weren't dozing were you? Bamboo Mike saw it maybe I should have taken that Texas heart shot.Hey anything you guys want to do I'm game Let's go back to "HAMBURGER HILL " at first light and wait for those deer.Alex made it to the top Joe!!! Alex,my spots are your spots Bud! There's plenty more too. I love you guys!
Hey Larry I'm up for next Saturday again if you guys are. I had a great time. I'm real glad to hear your son enjoyed his time with us too. This is what it looks like up here now after last nights snowfall. Lodestar(Jason) and I got out and cut a few tracks this morning and had a ball in the white stuff.
Hey Vaughn, nice shot of the pond. I hope I can do next Sat. Hope to get over one day this week.
Vaughn man oh man I'm jealous. I wish I could have been there with you and Jason. Great shot of the pond. Did you see any sign of MR BIG? That picture would make a great Christmas Card.
sweet pic of that water and snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brother Dean make a road Trip Bud! We aren't that far from you.
Even though I haven't had a chance to meet or hunt with you guys yet I feel like I'd fit right in. You guys want to plan to get together at local shoot like whittingham?
As much fun as I've had, I hate to miss the next hunt. I have a pinewood derby race with my son on Saturday and a primitive biathlon, which is snowshoeing and shooting targets with smokepoles, on Sunday. This week is booked with various activities. Have fun without me. I'll still be roaming the woods dressed funny just with a gun instead of a bow.
John tell your son good luck in the Pinewood Derby. I remember those days.Enjoy Sunday as well. You are a good sport and you will be missed for sure.imskippy most of us do in fact attend the Whittingham Trad Shoot. Some even camp out there. We will let you know when it gets close or maybe in March after the season ends we can all get together and shoot. There is a archery range up at Flatbrook Roy /Wallpack .
Bentpole...Chester (Blackriver WMA) has an archery range also may be more central for all you guys, just a thought.
Black River isn't a bad idea.
Yep Mike I know it well. Good for us bad for the NEW YORKERS. Joe Sipp travels 80 miles[?] to hunt with us. Alex lives on the other side of the Bear Mountain Bridge. For us Jersey guys that would be great.
Had a Great Time Saturday. Hope to do it again soon. Nice meeting everyone again
You fellas don't worry about me this weekend. I'm going to venture out to a few spots in Stokes.
Seen quite a few deer there during the regular season and now thats it quieted down some, I'm gonna still hunt and do some sitting. Hope you Jersey boys put some venison on the ground...keep the faith and put some wood in the air!
Good Luck to You Joe. I sat this evening & saw 6 DOEs, to bad they where out of range.... I have to move up hill 50yards....

HAHAHA 80 mileas my truck is just warming up...I'm at over 200 miles to make them hunts LOL.
Like Joe, I was thinking of sitting this week. This is my last week. Next week I'll be in Maryland taking my daughter back to school.
Hey crew, I only get a few hours this coming Saturday, so I'm going to sit on the mountain in one of my seldom used spots. I've been having a feeling about a late buck that might be passing by. If you all get together, I hope you have a great time as always.
just to let others know Reg-set #8 doesn't close till February 16, 2008.... anyone is welcomed to come out my way. I have 13acres & there is some State land close too.
I have a feeling about still hunting the thickets around the cemetery and the river this week, maybe thursday or friday. Saturday, I can come only in the afternoon, because my mom is coming to visit on Sunday, and the house needs to be ready :D
Any one up for a try at Wild Cat ridge? Things have been settled down a bit in this piece of woods. Could be a great day of sitting. This might be an option if ya don't feel like driving all the way up to Sussex.
Larry
ill be hunting geese with the stick and string saturday morning in zone 2 up that way. If you guys get together hope ya'll have a blast I'll be trying to knock some honkers outta the sky!
I only have a few hours on Saturday, so I think I'll be sticking around home as well.
Sal, we should check out that spot we were talking about.
And like Sal said, winter bow is open through Feb. 16 down here if anybody wants to come down one weekend. We're within 10 minutes of Spruce Run and Clinton WMA, as well as some other smaller pieces of state land.
Let me see if I'm working Saturday. I'll let anyone interested know what I'm doing by Friday. I have a couple of spots I'm thinking about.
Sal and Eric I might just take you folks up on that offer!
Come On Down.....
I to this weekend might not be able to make it.Have to finish up some unfinished projects ive been puttin off. Will know by friday.
PETE
Hey Guy's have a great time. I can't make it have to work this weekend.
Hey everyone,
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.
Sounds like you guys have had a ball chasing around our well educated N.J. deer! Don't feel bad, I'd like to see some of the TV "pros" come up here for a late season hunt, doubt that any of them could do any better than you guys have!
I think an early season fall hunt would be a much different story. First or second week of fall season would be great.
Sure did enjoy meeting everyone (although it appears that the group has grown quite a bit while I was away, so I guess I haven't met all of you yet)!
If you decide to come up again let me know, I have a couple of ideas that may tilt the odds in our favor a bit.
By the way, how many of you gun hunt too?
-Ron
I don't firearm hunt anymore... More of a rush with a bow.
I agree Sal,
Bowhunting is much more fun and challenging. I do still take the shotgun or smokepole out kinda like a revenge for bow season. I think to myself-Go ahead deer, stand out there at forty yards broadside like you did during bow season...
-Ron
i only gun hunt a few days out of the year but its traditio with my gang.
Bow, smokepole, shotgun - whatever season it may be.
Bow only for me folks.I sold the guns years back.
Bow only for me right now, but I'd like to get back into smokepoles. Flintlock and round ball is almost as much fun as the stick 'n string.
Come on down, Tom.
It looks like I'll be able to hunt until about 2:00.
Bow, shotgun, smoke pole for me. I like the challenge of going out with the bow and it's almost the same amount of fun for me when using my smoke pole.I also get a charge using either my 10 Ga scatter gun or my 12 Ga slug. Aww heck I just like getting out and away from civilization for a while.
Larry
Snowing good outside now.... Good deer hunting weather.... I'll be going out Tomorrow, hopefully I can drive down to the spot behind the Owl's nest.
Sal, where's the best access to that spot? Up past the Owl's Nest?
There are also a couple interesting-looking spots along the Musconetcong - out towards Finesville, and along the Delaware up by Carpentersville (right off River Rd.)
Fresh snow...cold weather....should make for some nice stillhunting. Dress warm fellas, that evening 2 hr sit could get a little chilly.
Stiff Rod...my phone is 845-691-5533...eves after 7pm. In 2 weeks, I'm back on the night shift. Good luck this weekend guys...shoot straight, shoot often!
Eric, Yes the first street before the owl's nest ( on the hill side ) is a path to gos up the hill. Also there is one in the back of the Owl's nest. To bad there is NO PARKING there. We can check them out if you want to on Saturday Eric, or who every wants to come.

Sal, what time do you want to meet in the morning? And where? I'll have Lee with me again.
Why don't we meet in the Owl's Nest parking lot and then drive down to where we can park?
Wife needs car... I think I can get her to drop me off around 7:00 am @ the Owl's Nest..
NO WORK!! Folks anyone interested Bucky and I will be at Jumboland tomorrow at 5:45- 6:00 AM. Big breakfast and George wants to sit tomorrow. SO bring stands if you want. This will be Georges last hunting day due to obligations. We figure we know where some deer are and we might get lucky plus I need some R and R this Saturday. Good Luck to all my Buds!!! Wackum and Stackum!!Sal and Eric I would like to hook up with you guys next Saturday if I don't have to work[if you have room]. Or the next couple of Saturdays!!! Skippy Stiff Rod will call you in the near future to see how you and the boys made out. Maybe we can meet for lunch? Vaughn I guess you and Jerry will be out after Mr. Big? Let me know how you make out!
theres room if you go to the F&G website look at WMA map Pohatcong north
Hey Tom, yup I think Jerry is gonna join me on the mountain in hopes that we'll get that ten to come by one of us. I really don't know when I plan on coming off the mountain but let me know when and where you guys are gonna have lunch and maybe we'll join you.
If it's easier, have her drop you off at my place.
I'll check back here in the am. Unless I hear otherwise, I'll meet you at the Owl's Nest around 7.
It will be easier for her to take me to the owl's nest. I sent you my phone number to your email...
Andrew and I will be hitting Wild Cat for small game. (His choice) It will give me a chance to do some scouting cause I'm heading into a new to me area.
Larry
this spot we're going to I have seen ppl bring out some nice deer. Plus if we get one or 2... we can check them in at the Owl's nest.
Good luck every one. I'll be on the mountain with Vaughn. Hope one of us gets a shot at some thing to fill up some freezer space.
Last minute posting before heading down the Hill to Hunt with Eric again.... It's 25deg's at the House... Hopefully one of us can tag one, but no biggy if I don't.. This is also a good scouting for me. Eric, I'll be down there around 1/4 of or so.
Good Luck to everyone else..
I hope you get one, Sal. Good luck everyone.

Larry...What part of WR will you be hunting. I have been hunting squirrel up by Splitrock with my smallbore flintlock. Been out a couple of times since the season reopened and got a few squirrels although it wasn't easy they spoke easy in those open woodlands. Didn't see much of anything else including deer and or sign. Did come across some stands not far off the gravel road by the power lines. There are still a fair amount of birds in the stocked WMA's if you concentrate on the woods and swamps. Good luck.
Just wait till you guys see the pics of Sal's trophy from this morning's hunt. :bigsmyl:
Those big 160 grain Snuffers on ash shafts really get the job done!
I'm loading them on photo bucket.... That thing did get hard rolled right over....

Nice pics Sal but did ya make meat?
I went out with Andrew for some small game at Wild Cat Ridge WMA. We brought home a rabbit for the pot. We also used our time out to do some scouting for deer sign. We hunted several spots and did find some positive deer sign. It felt good to sleep in this morning. I got up at 7.
Any one hear how Bucky and Bentpole made out today?
Larry
I'll have to leave the story for Sal, but I have to admit, it was one heck of a shot!
C'mon !!!! you're killing me here.
I just came home. Outstanding pictures Sal! Looks like you and Eric were in the right spot.Bucky and I hunted sun up to sun down .I had a herd of 8 or 9 deer 60 yards out and headed towards George at 10:50 or so. They started down towards the road {George was on the other side} and they turned around and started coming back on a 45 degree angle towards me. They ended up stopping in a briar patch 40 yards away for a good 20 minutes and never came closer for a shot opportunity.I was shakin' like a school girl at her first dance. They slowly meandered away and I came down. After lunch we ended up down towards Wallpack. We set up behind a couple of those big weed fields in woods lots between the edge of the weed field and the Flatbrook. Stayed in until 5:30 Nothing . Oh well. George took a bunch of pictures I think he's going to start a new thread. Something like "My last day of Winter Bow". He can't hunt next week and he said he's done for the rest of the season.
Jerry how did you and Vaughn make out? Did you see Mr. Big? YEH Sal what Jerry said your killin' us!!!!
Hey Larry glad to hear that the rabbits haven't gone extinct in Jersey. I just haven't seen any around here.
Tom, no sign of that ten today, although my neighbor just told me he almost hit him early this morning right down the road from us.
Jerry, missed you this morning bud. You missed a great morning. The weather was real nice the first part of the day and the does were really moving about but just not in range.
C'mon Sal where's the pic. I could really use a trophy pic from Jersey right about now.
these are the last of the rubs

here is the Trophy Eric was talking about.
LOL..... Eric & I both missed on the first shot and on my second shot I tagged it.
I'm confused. i thought Sal got a deer and all I see are pics of trees :) . If you did get one, I'd love to see a pic!
check again...LOL
Perfect heart shot. congrats, Sal!! :archer:
I can't believe He was Talking like it was a deer... Too Funee. :archer: for some reason photo bucket is giving me problems. I have more pic's of the day...
Nice pics Sal and nice shot. You guys had me going.
Nope, no deer. But we did have a pretty good day.
The only deer we saw was well over 100 yards away and moving fast. She slipped right over the ridge and down to the shotgun hunter who hung his tag on her.
WOOOOFAAAA! Sal you and Eric had me going! Great shot make sure you resharpen that broadhead.Looks like a Beechnut or Hazelnut? Good one LOL! That group I saw yesterday was coming off the edge of the "Table Top" same way we pushed them but they didn't run across the street by the cemetary. They were going to cross the side road. That's where Bucky was behind the pines in that saddle.. Must have saw the two Toyota's parked there, have to change vehicles.. Didn't see horns in the group. They didn't start moving until almost 11:00.
it was a top flight golf ball... that Lee & Eric found down in a river bottom. lots of tracks in that area...
Sal that's funny I was thinking to myself a little late in the season for hazelnuts and beechnuts. I see Tiger Woods signed it too.
The BH went in about 1"... You can take it that with a deer it will go right thu the deer with no problem... The area is very nice and the shotgunner we where talk too been hunting there for years and told us the deer come from the farm fields and work their way up the hill very slowly, since there is tons of OAK trees all over the place.
You can bet that come October, I'll be somewhere on the south side of that hill.
Sal, you had me excited. Now I'm kicking my self. Great shot.
Sal...great shot! Ya had us all going there! Those are some nice rubs...
Jerry...WW on squirrels only? I personally don't shoot them but they are a tough head, fly great and contrary to what you read...sharpen easily.
The first pic is the hole they create the second pic is the same head buried into the rear leg. We needed pliers to remove it, no damage and still sharp!

Looks like everyone had a great weekend! I opted to go goose hunting with the recurve...we didn't end up getting anything but had a blast. Ill have some vid and pics soon.
Met up with stiff rod and bucky for breakfast...actually didn't know they were going to be there was going to go to yetters but they were closed LOL.
Well a friend of mine gave me a deer last night so its off to butcher.
PS: Bentpole/Bucky here is the link I was talking about. I mentioned it to a few others over the weekend you guys should all get together and get a table or 2 or 3 :D Its a great cause guys we dont profit anything from it.

Congrats to Mike [Bamboo] on that doe. Man oh man the damage that Wensel Woodman did. Way to go Mike! Tell the story.
Stiff Rod....He used a WW....thats ok...they say the mind is the first to go...and at our age Tom...you know what the 2nd thing is......
OPPS sorry Joe looked like a 160 grain snuffer hole watch this... GO GIANTS!!!
Tom, I'm going to check with the better half about the venison dinner. Sounds like a great time!
Hey Sal, Bucky and Joe Cool pics!
Looks like everyone had a good weekend. I can't wait until we all get back together again. You all are fine folks and I'm glad that I got to meet all of you. I'm still gonna be chasing the deer over this way while the season is still open. Anyone interested in hooking up?
Larry
Who is going Saturday?
As far as I know, I'll be heading out somewhere Saturday.
I'm thinking about hitting Pohat North again....
Both my morning and afternoon are booked. Maybe I can meet up with Sal and/or Eric (and anyone els) sometime in February down by them.
Your more then welcome to join me.

I'll be there thumping squirrels with the flintlock.
Folks I just received the word . I will be working Saturday. How long I don't know . I'll have to see. Larry if I get out early enough I would like to sit the afternoon/night at WildCat. Interested?
Hey Tom
Just let me know if you can make it for an afternoon sit on Sat. Give me a call, I'm working evenings this week.
Good luck Mike thumpin tree rats. I was up there last Sat with my son and didn't see one rat, but we did bring home a nice cotton tail.
Larry
ill be hunting down south here with my brother trying to film one last hunt for the 07/08 season!
Larry...I got a couple last time out but it's not easy. They are spooky, for people that never hunted squirrel in the open woodlands during winter it's really hard to imagine especially with a smallbore flintlock, they are not your neighborhood/backyard variety. What section were you hunting. Like I mentioned in an earlier post I have been hunting the area by the reservior/powerlines.
Rabbits good eating this time of year. Very nice. I'll take squirrel or rabbit meat over venison all the time.
Good chance work might get canceled!!! WOOOOFAAAA
Tom keep me posted.
Tom I'm horizontal with heavy lower&middle back spasms since yesterday. I don't think I'll be able to shoot my bow for a week, let alone walk normally. I think Winter in NJ is over for me :(
Hey Alex,
Hang in there! We still have just under another month for winter bow here. Rest up and heel yourself. I hope that you are on your feet and feeling better real soon.
By the way the STOS head flys real good off my bow. I just may have to buy some to use next season.
Larry
Thanks Larry! I have some 130 gr STOS to trade with you for next year if you want. Alex
Was hopin to get out with a bunch of ya guys this wknd but have to work sat & sun. :wavey:
PETE
I will let everyone know for sure tomorrow. Alex, feel better! Pete Bummer!
Tom...I'm heading down to bowhunt with Bamboo and Scott. Not sure where we will be chasing deer around.
I'll keep the ASAT pants here and after the season we can meet for lunch and I'll give you the pants then. Just don't tell Bucky or Reiner
you soon will be wearing camo that will make you disappear....Good luck on your Sat hunt....Joe
Who's all going Out Tomorrow... I'll be at Pohat-North. Going to try and get the wife to drop me off around 6AM. That will give me about 1.5 hrs before Sunrise... Good Luck to everyone Tomorrow.
OK Skippy SHHHHH... No work! So being that tomorrow is the last day I can hunt Old Mine Road. I will in fact hunt Old Mine Road.Is anyone interested? Larry how about you and Reiner? Sal, I gotta do this last day on my stomping grounds. But next Saturday if I don't have to work I would like to share the woods with Eric and you down your way . Tomorrow, I might even consider the dirt road side of Wallpack. It will be chilly but I want to sit in my stand. Folks my cell # is 973-356-4197 feel free to call me. Vaughn, are you Jason, and Jerry hunting? tomorrow?
We can do Next Saturday.... just let me know...
Sorry fellas, I'm tied up.
ill be hunting down south sorry ya'll!
hoping to put one of these new cedars through a deer!
I have some stuff to take care of at home in the morning. I think when I can get away I might head over to Clinton to do some scouting and see if I can't thump a bunny or 2.
Looks like I'm flying solo. Good Luck to everyone .I will report tomorrow evening.
Good Luck everyone....
OK Guys.....This is just too good to be true!!!!! Are you guys STILL deer hunting?????
I'm going to have to get together with Joe "skipper" Skipp and get all the "particulars"
I'm gonna get me a N.J. license next year for sure!!!!! :archer:
I'll be still hunting & might even use a stand that is permanent, there on State land so anyone can use them.
Well I didn't go out this morning I feel like crap. I might go out this afternoon, if I feel a little better...

Yep, our winter bow season runs through Feb. 16, depending on which zone you hunt. The early season opener was Sept. 8. Just about every day in between was open to hunt deer, except Sundays and Christmas.
Yeah, Sal, I'm gonna be sitting home today for the same reason. I've been fighting off a cold for almost 2 weeks now, and it picked today to get to me.
I'm going to try this week if my back is better at least 80%. Can't wait! gotta' find me a spot for the 15 days in February too :archer: :archer: :archer:
Alex, Your then welcome to come down this way...
Good Evening. Well Vaughn and I hunted from sun up to sun down.We didn't see a tail! Morning hunt we sat the Table Top Vaughn was on the ground in a big blow down ,I took my climber in. I went all the way up to where the tractor road ends.Found fresh tracks and plenty of good sign.Went up an oak on the edge of some hemlocks. Had three seperate runs , fresh tracks going threw the hemlocks scat all over.About an hour or so I hear a pack of beagles down in the Quarry and on the other side of the road. Here we go I said to myself. NOTHING. Came down at 11:00. Drove down the road and hit a spot put a short drive on for Vaughn ZERO.Showed Vaughn another of my good spots, hardly any tracks [used to be a hot spot winter bow]ZIP.Checked out a promising new spot and decided to sit until dark tracks, sign,no deer. The weather was good, no wind , low to mid 20's, nice . Besides that we had a great day. Was good hunting with Vaughn, good to be out.
Sounds like a great day fellas!
Yup, another great day in the woods, even though we didn't see anything. I saw a lot of promising spots for next fall. Thanks Tom. Sorry no pics, stupid me forgot to put the memory card in my cheapo camera so all the cool scenery pics I took were never saved :banghead:
Glad to hear some of you got out together. Hope to come and shoot at your place this week Vaughn.
Vaughn, don't feel bad I have my camera in the glovebox of the truck for that reason. I just have to remember to take it out! Just think if those beagles would have got on that/those deer a little sooner! They would have ran right to us.You said the owners had to chase them to get them back.I heard them whistling to get the pack back .It sounded like he had at least four to six dogs. That Longbow of yours is a shooter. I enjoyed shooting it. Beautiful bow.We have to get together with some of your arrows so you can shoot mine. One day we'll spend the day scouting and shooting. We'll get the boys together at the range up there.
Any one else get out?
Stiff Rod...I agree with your PM...we SHOULD START HUNTING ON SUNDAYS... :readit:
Less hunters in the woods and we can get in the full weekend. I'm sure Scott and Mike would agree. Great idea pal....thats why we put you in charge...always thinking!!!
You Jersey boys should seriously consider making Shawns Bunny Hunt...its tough but its a great time...
if I had the Money I would....
Joe, I was thinking very seriously about making it up to Shawn's bunny hunt, but I just can't pull it off this year. Lee's going to be camping at Valley Forge with Boy Scouts, and I have a funny feeling he's going to want me to go with him.
I am going to plan to make it next year. :bigsmyl:
Joe that's why I get so many headaches! I would love to make the trip up to Shawns. I love you guys. J.R. just got asked at College to go to France to study Art for a couple of weeks. Gotta see how much funds I need.Hey us Jersey guys forgot what rabbits look like No rabbits left in Jersey. Got any pictures? Tuff? What tuff? Tuff Tommy P the king of Hamburger Hill.
Hey guys we can always give wild cat a try for rabbits and squirrels.
Depending on how fast the USPS is this week, I may be tuning my new Turkey Creek this weekend! :bigsmyl:
Good for you Eric! Glad to hear you will finally be getting it.
I got an email today from Doug saying it will ship in the morning.
If he ships it tomorrow AM you should have it by Wednesday afternoon. My last on e I called him on a Saturday afternoon[instock bow] I had it Monday Afternoon.
Hey Larry just let me know most likely I can make it. If you got rabbits over there I'll make the effort.
That would really be great if I have it Wed. afternoon. My work schedule changed last week, and Wed. is now the only day I get home before dark. It sure would be nice to fling a few arras after I get the kids off to their mother's.
Eric, Want to hunt on Sept. 9th... Over at Pohat-North.

Hey Vaughn,
Let me see what i can put together for Saturday. The last time I hunted up there with my son there was snow o the ground and we saw a lot of rabbit tracks. Send me a PM so you can give me some ideas on how to set this up.
Larry
Eric,
I'm glad that you are getting your bow. I hope that you like shooting yours as much as I like shooting mine. Don't forget to post some pictures of it here.
Larry
Doesn't look like I'm working Saturday. HMMMMM what to do? What to do? Looks like nice weather too.
Sal, that sounds like a plan for the 9th.
If I have my bow by Thursday afternoon, I think I'm gonna come down with a really bad case of the Friday flu. With any luck I'll be able to get some arrows to fly out of it so I can hunt somewhere Saturday.
Hey Tom come hunting with me. I want to try some small game. Heck anything to stay out hunting longer with the bow.
Larry
Eric, if You get Your Bow this Thrusday, let me know if you need any help...This Saturday looking good too..
Judging by the forecast this morning, I guess I'll be working Friday.
I'm waiting on some ash shafts from AMAW, so hopefully I can get my old cedars flying good from the new bow.
I will be hunting wild cat this Sat with Vaughn for some small game fun and some scouting. I can't wait
Larry I'll let you know definetly tomorrow. If I don't have to work I'd like to spend at least half a day with Sal and Eric {did you get your CREEK?} If I can hunt Whitetails I'd like to try down by them.
Nope, no CREEK yet. The kids will be looking for it after school tomorrow.
When Tom, This Saturday??? I'm game..I moved my ladder stand in the back, but want to hunt Pohat-North Saturday....Just to be nice I'll be taking my climber so I wont use a build stand that's in the woods....
One guy Eric & I spoke to said the deer move slowly up the hill in the mornings... so a dark walk would be the best bet.
I'll probably tuck back into one of those thicker spots we found. I honestly can't remember the last time I was in a tree...it has to be 15 years or more.
I guess the best bet would be to meet at the Owl's Nest. What time?
Sal, let me know if you need a ride.
Sure I can use a Ride... I'll be checking everything... I think we should go in early, around 5 am or so... what do You think?
Sal and Eric. I'm sorry I do have to work tomorrow. I apoligize for any inconvenience. I was working /not working. This morning we got the go ahead. I really want to meet up with you guys down by you. Look up Sweet Water Hollow on the NJ LandTrust Site. I hunted there years back. Bow only. It was a nice piece. That's something to look into also. Hacklebarney State Park is another nice spot. I used to hunt that around Pottersville off 206 North off 287. We WILL get togeter . One more Saturday CORRECT?
2... Ends Feb 16 th
Sweet Water Hollow on the NJ Land Trust Site
I have the paper work for that place... haven't gotten around to scout it...
It would be a good place during the week Sal Just walk the power lines look for runs Left side of the power lines were always better but close to the houses could be productive as well. Good Luck to you and Eric!Let us know how you make out!
Season down by me closed already but I dont mind LOL. I worked a 24 12 hours off then a 44 hour shift this week and haven't slept at all LOL I am taking this saturday to rest up and tinker around the house. May do some scouting sunday with Pat and a little stump shooting.
Do you really think we need to walk in that early? I was thinking if I was at your house around 5:30, we should be good.
I just printed out the paperwork for Sweet Hollow if you want to check that out tomorrow too.
Still no bow...hopefully tomorrow. But I did get a dozen shafts today to keep me busy while I wait.
I said 5 AM if others where coming... Since it is just Us... 5:30 am I'll be ready... stand & pack is ready.. I just sharpened my arrow points...I'll see you at 5:30 AM then Eric... remember how to get here?
I think so. Just keep an eye out for me.
I guess I'll be getting up early to pack, since everything is out in the shed, and it's pouring out.
Gonna pass on the last weekend for me. New job, 2nd shift hours....Good luck to you guys and hope you fellas put some brown down.
eric, you still have my phone #... call if you have to... I'll be up by 4:30 - 5:00 am
Will do.I'll see you in the morning.
I'm gonna send you a PM with my number, since I don't think I ever gave it to you.
Eric & I set out this morning to mild temps with a nice breeze. The light coming over the mountain was out of this world. ( Wish I had my camera ) As the sun started to peek over the mountains the nice breeze turned in to a steady 1 to 2 mph hitting me in the back, not good. I then started to move to the other side of the ridge. I then started to follow a nice rub line. Mean while Eric was still sitting on his tree seat and (He'll have to finish). I walked for a bit then sat down and did it all over again. This went on for about 3 hrs & followed one after another rub line spanning over 200 yards. I found a lot of nice spots. We didn't see any deer, Still a great morning. Around 10:30 - 11:00 am we then went to check out Sweet Hollow Preserve. We only walked one spot of it, but really looks good .. Not because we came up on 3 wood'n stands & 5 metal ladder stands. This area is Bow hunting only.
Next Saturday we are going to check out the other part of Sweet Hollow Preserve. As we where driving around to find the bigger area of the Preserve, we came across 20 hen turkeys walking just off the road in someones wood lot/home.
Like I said it was a Great Day
Just got back from spending the afternoon with Larry and his son Andrew. We had a good supply of blunts and judos with us hoping to stir up some rabbits or squirrels. No shot taken up on Wildcat Ridge but we sure had some fun. Scouted some nice areas along the powerline that I think I'll have to allocate some time to next deer season. Thanks Larry I can't say that enough. I enjoyed your company in the woods and I look forward to hunting over there with you again.
Hey Vaughn,
Any time you want to come back and hunt with me is ok with me. We enjoyed being out with you today.I think Andrew will sleep like a rock tonight after getting all that good fresh air and doing all that walking. Thank you for making the trip.
We found some interesting areas to try for deer. I can't wait till fall already!

I was up there in the morning with the .36 flintlock for squirrel, really tough but I managed one. It was really cold and windy so the squirrels weren't active. Winter squirrels are spooky in those open woods given all the other animals that try to eat them both on the ground and from the air.
Was the dirt road closed due to ice when you guys got there? Was this morning but I went around the barrier, road was a sheet of ice and most of the trees had a nice coating of ice on them.
Glad you folks had a great day. It isn't about killin' is it? GO GIANTS!!!!!!!
Killing is something you choice to do at times... Go New England ... Because My Eagles didn't make it...
Mike the barrier was up but we drove around it like you did. We walked several areas but saw no squirrels. Glad you got one with your smoke pole. Your right Tom, it isn't about killin. Mostly enjoying the outdoors with your family and friends.
Come on Sal you could at least root for the NFC Team......Go Giants !!!!!!!
I can't stand NYG,Dallas or Washington... the onlt time I'll pull for one of those teams is when the play one of the others that has a better win/lose.
Larry,
Not sure where you guys walked but I walked past the powerlines and off to the left a bit all down hill where I came upon a swampy area with small boulders all over the place and two little creeks run. Posted signs and a house up on top of a hill. Looks like a great spot to hunt deer but the drag out would be nearly impossible for all except maybe Mr. America.
What time did you get there? I was back at my truck around 10:00.
Mike, what power lines are you talking about?
Went scouting with pdk25 my brother and myself today down in our area. Brought the bows with us for a little stump shooting and man had a BLAST!!!!!
Can you believe I lost one of them bring pink nanna fletch? How it hell I dont know but I did LOL.
But all in all excellent weather, found some awsome spots, and had a blast with the guys!
Tom that's what it's all about! Great weather to do it today for sure. Shot the snot out of my bows.Good Times!

Wildcat Ridge by Splitrock Reservior has high tension power lines that run through the WMA. They cross over Splitrock Rd. at one point. I Believe there is a marked hiking trail at that point where the lines cross over the road just before or after the large parking area depending on the direction your coming from.
Tom I know the area that Mike is talking about.
Mike we didn't get into the woods until 1 pm or so. I had Super Bowl chores to do that morning like cooking up a big batch of venison chili. It came out real good.
Wooohoo! the Giants won and there is a fresh layer of snow on the ground this morning. I just had to get out and celebrate by chasing some squirrels and checking out the new WMA behind my property. Didn't get any but I sure had a lot of fun checking out potential new spots to hunt. I jumped a good group of about a dozen deer and found plenty of good runways.
Don't forget to vote tomorrow!!
Vaughn you lucky dog you! I saw your other thread. We'll have to take a walk threw the new spot. Yeh Giants! That's cause Larry made CHILI !!! Larry The power lines cross SplitRock Gothca . Man are we going to have a lot of Scouting to do!!! Mike we'll all have to get together up at Wildcat one day for sure. Lots of spots Larry and I want to check out better.

Sounds good to me.
Maybe we can build a few ground blinds too Tom.
Eric, here is the weather report for now
Friday Night, Feb 8
Low: 27 °F RealFeel®: 21 °F
Mostly cloudy
Saturday, Feb 9
High: 44 °F RealFeel®: 32 °F
Mostly cloudy and windy with a rain and snow shower possible
Sal and Eric: I do not know if I have to work yet. If I don't what did you have in mind?
Sweet hollow looked really good... We checked out one of the smaller pieces. If You still want to come up we can meet & check out the bigger piece of land... You did say You used to hunt there right?
That's correct Sal I haven't been there in years. Looks like they added more property to it. Did you walk the Power lines ? I believe I parked on Sweet Hollow Road .There were a couple of houses there .I went in the small piece of property, made a left, crossed the Power Lines and into the big piece. Nice chunk of land with a creek back there.I know it was close to the truck stop.I used to have breakfast there it was a greasey spoon type place but service was good ,clean bathrooms. Then I used to cross 78 towards the property. There was also a Bagel Shop/deli on the left side of the road close to 78 also.I'll have to get a Hunterton County map and refresh my memory. Compare the two to see where the new property is.
Nope, we where scouted one of the ones down by the creek, stream, brook what ever you want to call them.
It's bowhunting only so the plus is you don't have to worry about any gun hunters.
true... Got to love Bow only land
The spot we scouted last week was down at the far end of the power lines property.
We drove past the small property along Sweet Hollow Rd.
This past fall I only ever saw 1 guy hunting the area by the power lines, so there should be very minimal pressure there.
BTW...the truck stop and bagel place are right in my back yard.
let me know what time we are going to meet. I meet you at Your place Eric... that kool?
Sounds good, Sal!
I guess if we'll be scouting, there's not much sense in meeting too early.
Tom, if you want to hit the truck stop or the bagel place for breakfast, I can meet you there.
Eric sounds good let me see if I have to work Saturday. If I don't WOOOOFAAAA! I'll hit this thread tomorrow with the info.
I just found out I have to drop Lee off for Scouts at 6 tomorrow morning. It's just a couple miles up the road, so I can be back home by 10 after.
My car died on me.... I think the starter went out... Eric if I can get a ride, I'll be able to join you both.. If not have fun & good luck.
Eric I sent you a PM
Tom, it must have gone to my work email. I sent you one from home.
Sal, no problem. I'll pick you up right after I drop Lee off - say about 6:15 or so.
Kool, I'll be ready
Well had a great time with Eric & Tom... we hit the spot about 7:00 +/- and after we did some nice BS'ing... We hit the woods. We had a nice snow fall around 8 am or so. As this was going on, Tom had about a dozen or so deer come in to his area... No deer Down, but we shoot the snot out of a dead fall... Tom, had us shooting his carbons and I think Eric will be getting some soon. These carbons flow great from my bow too, I might get some and try... till then I sure do love my ash arrows.... Lots of great sign in this spot. Looks good for next fall... I'll be trying to get back out there this coming week... Eric, Tom ( if he can get off ) & I are planning to do another Saturday hunt there....
Tom, it was great shooting that nice bow of Ours & them fake woodies ( Carbon arrows ) They did fly great from my shrew. Thanx... Hopefully we can hunt again next Saturday..."THE SEASONS END HUNT....Winter Bow 08"
Sal, don't forget the deer we saw while we were BSing.
I already sent an email to John at Sipsey River about those carbons.
Sal and Eric if I don't have to work for sure next Saturday! Bucky said NOPE he's done. I'll see you guys tomorrow at PVA>>>-----> That first deer had your name on it Sal! Wasn't much left of that log was there????Too many eyes on me only needed another 10 yards or so before that other big doe picked my movement up.
Tom, Hopefully one of us 3 can get one next Saturday...
We know they're there Sal!!! Did you and Eric hunt the evening? It's amazing how close you guys are to that piece of property!
Nope I nad to work on my car.... I got under there and saw a broken wire.... fixed in no time...If You look on a map, You'll see 519 & bellis Rd.... I'm around the corner & Eric is just down the street...
Tom, you went right past my house on your way to 78.
I think I have a new "go-to" spot for the fall. I think by then I'll have a new climber so I can get up off the ground and maybe see some of these deer. Those deer had to pass within 60-80 yards of me, but I didn't see a thing.
I didn't get back out this afternoon either. Boy scouts didn't give us any idea when they were going to be back, so I waited for Lee to get home. I was going to take a run out to Cabelas, but I ended up waiting all afternoon...Lee just got home about 15 minutes ago.
Well Eric, You know what tree to climb don't you! LOL!Yep # 147?
Tom, That's tree # 1147... You forgot about the other 1000 tree's in front of that 147th tree...
No Sal, Eric's House number
lol... sorry...
yOU soooo fUNNY sAL
Boy do I have alot of catching up to do. I just got back on here for the first time since Saturday!
Tom, yep it's #147.
Well, this past Wednesday morning I had to go to the hospital because I was passing a kidney stone. Well the stone pasted & no more pain & the best news... I stopped bleeding.... I'll be going out Friday Morning then back to the Doc's, then back out hunting.... I'm also ready for Saturday... Last Day of Winter bow in Zone 10 of Jersey...
Sal...I don't envy you..wow...glad all is OK. Hope for your sake it wasn't the size of those rocks we were slipping and sliding on during that last drive.
it was a small one... other then the kidney pain, I didn't feel it come out....

Sorry to hear You can't make it Tom (bentpole), so far it just us Tom & Your Bro. Is he coming too? I'm bringing my miniDV video camera.. I'll be happy to get some good footage, If the Great Spirit wants me to tag out... So be It!!!!
Guys it' will be noisey going in [crunchy snow!}Spread out in that big woodlot. Eric and Sal should know where to go. I did mark a tree for Eric last Saturday with some bright eyes. .A couple standers on the edge of the powerlines and walk staight in and spread out. They like to pinball from ticket to ticket in that wood lot .I know there's a herd of ten in there.Saw them last Saturday.Make sure you have your letters downloaded and on you!
Guys, I'm not gonna make it in the morning. I'm just getting in from a long day at work, followed by a quick detour to PVA for some field points for the arras I'm finishing up. I forgot to get them Sunday :banghead:
I didn't get any BHs glued on or sharpened yet. I'll get my stuff together in the morning and meet you guys up at Sweet Hollow around 11:00 to do a little stumpin'. Then maybe we can close out the season up there with an afternoon sit.
sorry to hear ya'll wont be able to make it...sal not sure if my brother is going i haven't heard from him yet
Kool with me Eric... I'll get a ride in with Tom and can I get a ride back home from You Eric?...
edit...
just me and you tomorrow sal ill see ya at 5am my bro just backed out!
I'll be there if I can. Depends on what happens on call. Since I will only get there around shooting light I'll try to be as quiet getting in as I can so as not to mess it up for you guys. Any suggestions on how to avoid where you guys will be standing?
5-10 minutes away...just down the hill...
walk straight in... pass the power line/Gas line trail in to the woods.... I have Tom & bro walk down a few yards....follow the trail we make and I'll give a mark for you to go in.
sounds good.
gotta sign out for now. duty calls. Tom, I'll probably call you shortly after I get on the road if I can come.
yea man give me a shout if i dont pick up we may be in the woods or walking in go ahead and text me.
sal sounds good buddy ill see ya in the morning time to get a few hours of sleep.
Sal, why don't you have Pat take that ladder stand just off the road?
I can give you a ride home.
do i need a harness or we huntin from the ground?
Good Luck boys!!!!
Joe, Mike, and myself are heading to NYS for the Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt.
Don't be shy now, get some wood in the air!!!!!!!!
Eric, if Pat walks in past the ladder stand I was in, He might kick up a deer to someone else.. Also the owner of that stand could be hunting for the last day...
Tom, bring Your stands.... Might be better to get up high & hunt/scout....
You folks have a great day. The weather looks good. Good Luck!!!I'll be waiting for the reports men!I'm off to take care of some prior obligations.Enjoy the day!
Well it was just Tom (deadpole) & Myself for the early morning... We got to the parking spot and heard some deer walking in the woods... I told Tom to set under the power pole/tower since He was hunting from the ground & went in the woods with my climber... We had a hot air balloon fly over head not long after Sun Rise... It was a great morning the temp was nice & chili... Around 8:30 am or so I saw 4 or 5 deer moving in the thick stuff about 100 yards away.
Around 10:45 - 11:00 am Eric showed up & Tom had to go since he's going to the TANJ/ubnj Game Dinner w/Guess Speaker Mr. Fred Eichler... Bummer I had to miss this chance to Meet Him. This is a Person among some other members from TradGang I really do Respect & Admire.
About 2:15 - 2:30 pm Eric & I are going back out to do a evening hunt.... What a way to End the Season... I do have my camcorder with me, I hope one of Us get something ( Just a plus ) to take some pic's of... More to Come....
had a good time sal next year ill bring one of my loc ons and we can get a few hunts in them woods.
I'll check back when Eric and Sal get out of the woods.
Hey any of you guys want to turkey hunt together this spring? This could be pretty fun. Besides it's something I've never tried.
Larry
Did you guys get lost!!??
Sorry...Ground hunted this Afternoon. Got out there around 2:30 pm, The weather was great.. I sat under a power tower, I was about 80 yards from where Tom hunted this morning.
Eric, went the other way to a tower the other way from Tom's spot... As I was waiting for something to walk by I took some pic's.

End of Season.... Fair well to The Kings
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/mysticguido/IMGA0026.jpg)
Around 4:30 pm, I heard something walking on the icy snow. I'm trying to get ready and have my camera set... when I look to my right, I see a deer 5-10 yards away walking away from me in the thick Willows, No shot was giving. After that deer walks out of sight, about a half hour or so I hear a deer huffing & beating it's foot at me... It sounded like the deer was about 5 yards behind me. Right at last Light the wind stopped, It got nice & Quite..... A heavy sorrow came over me, It's time to End another season... Right as The light ended, A lone yote howled... Fair well to the kings... fair well to the season....
Larry, I want to Turkey hunt and film it... This will be my second try at them... if I get the permit.
We both sat along the power lines tonight. I was down along the edge of that field where we saw the portable stand last weekend. Sal was about 2 towers away. About 1/2 hour before dark, I heard probably 5-6 deer come through behind me, on the other side of some thick brush. Since they went by directly downwind, I knew they wouldn't come any closer. Then just as it was getting dark, a coyote started howling down in the creek bottom.
At that point, I called it a night. I hiked back to the spot where we were planning to meet. Sal was there waiting for me. It turns out he had a couple of close encounters, including a doe that snuck up behind him and blew in his ear. I'll have to let Sal finish telling the story.
Wow... Time delay :banghead:
Sorry I couldn't make it guys. I went out this afternoon and had a bunch of deer feeding out in front of me, but nothing closer than 50 yards. Saw turkey and had a groundhog about 3 yards away. Can't wait until next year. Lot's of time to practice.
Ground hog Starts March 1.... Kool...
Great Way to end the season! You guys had some action that's always good .Man oh man I wish I was there. We'll have to look for that 'yote ,he's not helping the herd for sure.Great little piece of property right guys? How much closer can it get too[for you folks anyway].Sal great pictures. You should take pics of all the rubs we saw.Eric it would have been nice if you drew blood with your new CREEK.Oh well. Season is done.
Bentpole, I'll be doing a lot of scouting & fixing up a nice ground blind there. Thanx for the heads up on it...
Sounds like a terrific end to a great season...friends, whitetail, and snow  . Thanks for sharing your adventures guys...
Mike where in Pennsy are you? Jersey isn't that far you know.
Tom...I'm pretty close to NJ. I live in Lehigh County so I guess I could make the boarder in about 35 minutes :archer:
Your off of 78 or 22 right? come on over, there is lots of State land around here.
I think this one sees his shadow.
come March 1 they are in season...
If he's this close then, I'll just hit him with my bow.
Yeah, Tom, it would have been nice to draw blood. There's always spring turkey season, too.
Doug tells me he's going to be working on a "trophy room" for his website.
That is one of the closest spots I have to hunt now. There's a small WMA property that's even closer, but it also sees quite a bit of pressure.
Eric, want to scout for some turkey?
Yeah, I'm thinking about giving turkey hunting a shot this spring.
I know of 3 places I want to check out....All is open to Turkey hunting.
After talking with Joe Skipp and Bamboo at the bunny hunt Im thinking Id really enjoy this hunt. The tags seem like a bargain and I could crash at my pa inlaws in Matamoras.
If your a friend of Joe and Mike your a friend of mine already. We have fun for sure.
:campfire: :archer:
All Trad Ganger's are Welcome to join in on Fall Bow 2008 or Winter Bow 2009.
Stiff Rod..."Izzy" is a "Goodfella"...good hunter, good shot. He'll fit right in on those January weekend drives. ;)
I know that deer season is now closed till Sept. But on the bright side of things, Groundhog season opens March 1st. Spring Turkey is right around the corner, and the Whittingham shoot is getting closer every day.
Do any of you guys know where we could do some groundhog hunting? Perhaps we could have a small gathering for a day and have some fun shooting our bows and shooting the BS.
If you can't tell I am Jonesin to stay outdoors with bow in hand. I am open to any reasonable suggestion. Cabin feaver is killing me! Please help!
Larry
hey if there is standing corn again next year we need to take a windy day and do some drives through it.
watched some of the wensel brothers OLD OLD OLD (to me :p ) DVDs and they show how to drive them real well. looks like it would be productive with our group.
Im up for some groundhog hunting...i dont have any spots but I'm always down for shooting something LOL.
3D season is on its way!!!! can't wait sundays out with the guys nailin some foam. also giving tueky a try this year with the bow as well as bowfishing.

Larry...WMA's with plowed fields and thick edges would be perfect. Good place close to home would be Black-River. Stalk the field edges.
Myself I only like to hunt what I'm willing to eat and groundhogs are not on my list of good-eats, although some may differ. I'll hold out for turkey season.

Hey Larry, If I can get away Sunday I'll join you guys. What time are you all meeting? I'm real interested in finding atleast one spot up there I can set up a nice naural blind to sit in a couple of times next season.
Hi Vaughn,
We haven't set up any time yet, but we were thinking some time around noon time for me cause we go to church Sunday mornings.
But on the other hand I may not be able to go because Andrew is still sick. He's been sick all week and the ex didn't think of bringing him to see his doctor. I will be taking him tomorrow to the doctor and I'll have to let everyone know about Sunday scouting for me.

Happy B- Day Jerry Jeffers!!! Vaughn, lots of nice places so little time.It was a great morning for sure. Great to be out and about. I really enjoyed the day. We'll have to do it again soon on another piece.
Groundhog/stumpin' season opens Saturday!
Just make sure you have a couple BHs in the quiver.
Be careful with the broadheads in the quiver on Federal lands. I've heard several stories of bows confiscated because they were carrying broadheads. Even though you are hunting groundhogs, they assume you are hunting deer. Also, I was told by several rangers that you cannot stump shoot on Federal land. Stump shooting is considered reckless shooting and is illegal. Safest bet is to carry small game heads and not admit to stumping.
I believe southpawshooter is correct. Target shooting of any kind on state and federal land is only allowed at designated ranges. I would contact the NJDF&G with regards to carring broadheads while groundhog hunting on state and federal lands. I they say it's OK I would ask for a memo either mailed or electronically with their letter head to avoid potential problems.
Hey,
You guys are gonna have to start your own forum...43 pages, WOW!
I hope everybody is going to Whittingham? Great shoot and another great excuse for a get together. Check out the "Whittingham" thread on the "Trad Events" forum.
-Ron
Actually, you are required to use broadheads for groundhogs. Check out the chart on pg. 62 of the 2007-08 hunting regs booklet.
Both Andrew and I are planning to attend Whittingham this year. I'd like to go both Sat and Sun.
Larry
Ron, I'll be at Whittingham this year. I'll be stopping by to pick up one of your BH sharpeners, and see what you're working on for Grizzlys.
