I was just reading another thread regarding Grunting bucks. I've read a few times now tet when folks are grunting or calling deer, the deer hones straight in on the sound & looks directly at the caller.
Having never, ever grunted or called anything bigger than a bunny I'm not 100% sure how the calls work, but I'm presuming that you blow 'em.
THE IDEA.........
Would it be possible to attatch the call itself to another tree, that you're not in & attatch a suitable length of garden hose. You'd use the call by blowing down the hose & the sound would actually come from, say, 10 yards away. That way if the buck/doe/goat/skwerl/mouse stares straight to the sound, it's not looking at you, but the tree the call is strapped to.....
Told you, dumb as a brick, but I hadta ask! :D
Oh & ifanyone tries this & it works, I thought of it first & will settle for 50% of the royalties! :D :D
How about a electronic call with a remote control for on and off? A hose would have to be how long? Might take alotta blowing to make it work?<><
Any deer I ever grunted at tucked it's tail and vacated the area...maybe it's my breath? :help: :campfire:
they have electric calls
Don't know if the call and hose thing would work but I do know that there are guys that rattle with the rattling antlers on a rope that reaches the ground from their tree stands. That way they can rustle the leaves and bang them on the ground. Presumeably the deer that respond will be focused on the noise on the ground rather than wondering what deer are going at it up in the trees. Your idea is not so dumb. I have a call that clips to my shirt and has a small diameter tube that you suck thru to make the call work. It's hands free. Don't know why I couldn't get some aquarium tubing and attach the call at the bottom of my climbing sticks. Just might work and I just might have to give it a try.
I can't believe no one has hooked up thier grunt call to a hose and tried this yet!!!!!!!!
I would but my wife took off skiing. It is snowing like mad. I am watching my 7 month old daughter and my other daughter who is five won't help out with the call.
The only hose I could find is frozen.
A little help!!!!
electronic calls aren't legal in all states
Hang Tight Bro. If I can dig up a hose under this snow we'll find out ifn it'll work. :help: :help:
I use a grunt tube right from the get-go. Not only do bucks respond, but does in the early season also come to the sound as it give them a sense of security.
In a similar theory to Rob's, I take my haul rope, while still attached to my harness and attach my pruning shears to the bottom. I then give it a toss and hopefully the rope gets draped over a limb branch while the shears land on the ground. The shears then are jigged up and down to emulate the sound of a deer walking. The deer then focuses on the ground instead of up in the tree. Its kinda like using turkey feathers during spring gobbler.
No I dont do it too often but I have brought in deer that have "hung up" on me. :D
IMHO being resourceful is a HUGE part of being a traditional hunter. :archer:
:clapper: :clapper: :biglaugh:
A few yeaars back I seen something like what you are describing at a hunting expo. The guy had a 2-3 foot rubber tube attached to his grunt call. You than could attach the call to yourself or bow. This enabled to keep your hand's free and be ready to shoot.
The trick is not to grunt unless the deer is leaving the area.. Once he starts coming in, stay off the call, or yes he will probably tag you.
I have heard of the antlers on a string thing, also a set of antlers on a stick with a rope for a visual on a far distant buck, which actually sounds like it has merit. They have the electronic ones which are illegal in some states. Theory is good, but really not necessary.
KirkII,, your hat made mine..
I've got dibs on marketing "traditional hoses"...
I was left at home alone again with some kids...

Yes I am easy to amuse and no I don't have a life!
MW is my new hero! :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :biglaugh:
Proves it'd work though....
I never saw the need as long as you do not call when the deer is looking towards you and know what you are doing, it is hard to get picked off. Out of the 50 bucks or so I have killed more than half have responed to calling, either grunt, the can or rattling. I do like the thraed though as I am bored, so I am gonna give it a go. Shawn
Rob, you're not the first with the idea, but I think you are the first to bring it up on the Gang. I also have a friend who was obsessed thatno matter how clean you make yourself, when you breathe, you dirty the air. He went and layed quite the length of plastic tube.. like 100 or 200 feet of it ! away from his tree and experimented exhaling only into the tube. After a few trips, he gave up on the effort. Remember, if you blow air out your mouth, it takes "so much" pressure and air, in order to move a column of air 15, 30.. heck 100 feet long, takes a lot more pressure and air.
ChuckC
I think the key is to have a lot of hot air!
Take two proves that it works. I was able to simulate a hunting situation:

Here's the one Shell and I use.<>< (http://inlinethumb42.webshots.com/37097/2738489110051876912S500x500Q85.jpg) (http://sports.webshots.com/photo/2738489110051876912wEYveH)
Seems like surgical tubing might work for the experiment.
I can see it now. A string of doe bleats and buck grunts through the woods with lengths of tubing to each. You could simulate a buck chasing a hot doe through the woods and bring them all in to you.
:p
Mitch that's great! Now I want to see it work on them Mulies up there!
I will try if they can snow plow their way to my house!

I am thinking bunnie call for yotes.
MW-its going to be a long winter..... :biglaugh:
I had the same thought about rigging fishing line to my can call and using little pulleys so that I could set my can call at the base of an adjacent tree and tip/reset the can call while up in my stand.
I just finished snow plowing and was having a cup of coffee. My wife drove up as said you better plow. It is really coming down.
I'm gonna get workin' on "The Grunt Plug" ... It will be hands free in operation and great for bowhunting ... Just eat a large can of beans and insert the plug ... ... Simple.
... mike ... :jumper: ...
ouch
Won't there be scent issues?
What if you attached some sort of pump like a bike pump or something on one end, or a bellows.
I was wondering what you were going to tell the mrs when she asked what you've been doing all day... :campfire:
Bill,
Interesting that you should ask.
I just went through the entire post with her and she called me a dork.
Lucky for me she already knew I was a dork and I watched the kids all morning so she could go ski the fresh powder so how much trouble could I really get in.
She also said I'm may be the only one amused by my video and I'm pretty sad.
I always thought about putting a bleat can in some kind of holder that you could pull up on the string and have it bleat at the base of the tree....but never tried it.
:biglaugh: Oh wait, that's what my wife calls me. Great idea for the coyotes, but when you do it, hook up a piece of fur so when you blow on the call, the fur jumps up and down. Oh and I was amused by your videos! :D
I love it! Maybe some of these ideas will work on a swamp monster, I've got in the bottom. My Bride only thought I was crazy, until now. Wait till she sees what I'm gonna rig for HER STAND!
She hasn't scored yet, so I bet she'll take the bait.....if she figures it out ya'll probably not hear from me for a while. I don't heal as fast as I used too.
The grunt has always worked well for me but the trick is to make them think that maybe they heard a grunt and come in and investagate. I usally just blow enough to get there attention and wait for their curiosity to do the rest.
Mitch, I liked your videos too, so don't be sad! If deer were smart enough to know how much time, money, and effort humans put in trying to outsmart them, they would be AFRAID! VERY AFRAID! LOL!
You guys crack me up! :biglaugh:
Now the amazing thing is by next fall someone will have it on the market

Well, you know wimmen just don't think the way we do. :campfire:
What about attatching the tube to the other end of the grunt call and letting in fall to the ground. Then when you blow your call, the sound comes out the end of the tube...on the ground.
OMG, classic winter thread. MW, you are a piece of work  .
MW, you get the award. Not sure it's a good award or not, but you get it! :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
There was a hunting show that was hosted by an older man & his son on a year or two ago & they were using a grunt system that consisted of a grunt tube & air hose that ran from the treestand down to the ground. Can't remember their name, though.
Loved the vid! Fun idea. Be glad your wife calls you a dork, I can't post what mine calls me mos of the time. That is wha I get for marrying a cajun!
I usually use a 100ft. lentgh of hose but I use it when I pass gass in my tree- the noise and smell are a good 30yds. away usually on a run I don't want the deer to use.
Well, my wife sent me back to work today. Something about spending too much time at home!
I'm thinking about running a hose through the office and testing the grunt out but there would be no doubt about who did it.
Mitch make sure you get video of that! :bigsmyl:
