Hey ! Just bought a used longbow that I'm going to put a new clear finish on. I would appreciate any input anyone has. I'm sure there is a vast amount of knowlegde out there. I thought maybe 4/0 steel wool, then a poly type clear coat. Let me hear from ya !
Thanks !

Does the bows riser contain any oily woods? I have used Hermsman's Spar Urethane on several bows with good results. It can be found at Walmart in a spray or lidded can. Chad

I would also sand off the old finish. Start with 150, go to 220. There are better finishes than Spar Urethane but they are expensive and take specialized equiptment. Spar Urethane holds up well and is easy to apply. Chad

Rust oleum Makes a clear. i have used it for a few redo longbows. Works nicely.

I have used and really like wipe-on poly, after completely sanding the old finish off. I have also sprayed another bow with spray-can poly and I think the wipe-on finish is much smoother and clearer and less messy.

Thunderbird 2 part epoxy...I have 2 bows( 3 Soon) ;) , that are finished with this stuff. Jim wipes it on or "hand rubs" it in.
Man. I cannot say enough good things about the incredible toughness of this product!
I have banged, dinged, dropped my longbows quite a few times in the last few months, not a mark on them. It is by far the most durable finish I have ever seen.
You can get it at 3Rivers I think.
Try it , you will love it.
