I'd like to hear suggestions on the above mentioned. I'm looking for reference material for someone totally new to archery. DVD's, books and magazines. Im only interested in traditional archery, not compound bows. any suggestions appreciated.
Traditional bowhunter magazine, I really like Fred Bear's field notes and Gene Wenzel's Come November in the book department...Mike
Oops, being totally new to the sport you may want to check out G. Fred Asbell's instinctive shooting and Byron Fergueson's Become the arrow for some instruction on different shooting methods...Mike
Don Thomas' books are always a good gift. I believe you can order directly from Don at donthomasbooks.com (Sorry I don't know how to make it a link)
I especially liked Longbow Country

For a new shooter T J Conrads "The Traditional Bowhunter's Handbook" is an excellent choice or "Traditional Archery" by Sam Fadala, both are full of information on bow tuning and arrow building/selection.

many thanks. It looks like I have some reading and DVD watching to do. This is by far the best forum I've ever visited. On any subject.
A good overlooked and underrated introductory book to traditional archery is Winds of Change by Jim Chinn. An Archer's Inner Life by Dave Sigurslid is another overlooked gem. Dave Petersen, E. Donnall Thomas Jr.,Jay Massey--anything and everything.
The witchery of archery,by pope,or is it young..anyway..it's good. :campfire:
Witchery of Archery wasn't written by Pope or Young, DB. It was Maurice Thompson(it was pronounced Morris I believe). A good book, especially from a historical perspective. Published in 1878 I believe, much of the hunting took place near my home along Florida's St Johns River basin. Still a very wild place.
Yep, The Witchery of Archery will really light the fire. Great book. The Thompson brothers were banned from owning firearms after the Civil War, and took to the swamps in Florida with archery tackle.
If you can find any of the books by Jay Massey, they are great reading, too.
