Title: Pheasents?
Post by: Dirty Bill on December 22, 2007, 02:31:00 PM
Does anyone go pheasent hunting with a bow? Where do you go,and what works best,as far as gear etc?

I can't get that image of Fred Bear shooting that pheasent out of the air, that I saw when I was a kid.   :campfire:

Most fun you'll have with you pants on.....

We use wood arrows flu flu's with field points. They aint always dead when they hit the ground a quick spin by the head finishes em cleanly...However if you plan on mounting it...you might look into another way since it does ruffle some feathers that way

My birb bow is a 63# LB at my 26" draw, but that kind of weight is defently not neccessary. For me a LB is much easier to wield when bird hunting.

I wish we had them thar pheasant here in SC.  For some reason I have always wanted to hunt them.  Definately would love to do it with my LB, but would revert back to my old ways just to have a chance with a scatter gun.

Nice.I'm surprised you don't use broadheads. Is there a reason? Do you use dogs,or just walk them up.   :campfire:

We don't have a lot of birds around here, so I go to a preserve.

Here's an old thread:

I pheasant hunt a lot(my dog makes me). I havent used trad gear yet however because I have very limited experience shooting at flying things. I thin knext year will be the year. I go on state land here in NY, and make out pretty good.

We do not use BH because of the dogs and the landowner said so...he was worried they would rip up his tractor tires.

I thought maybe that was why.   :campfire:

I will try over next week in Nebraska!  I've never shot at a flying target with my bow and I have a hard enough time hitting wild birds with a shotgun.  It will be a Christmas miracle if I connect.

I leave thursday for Arlington Kansas for a bow and arrow duck goose and bird hunt.  I will be using BH flu flu for bird and BH hunting arrows for the waterfowl in the wheat fields.  We can walk a half a mile and retreive the arrows after we shoot them.

BRING ARROWS.......LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF ARROWS!!!!

missing by inches is 99% of the fun. connecting is the bonus for having so much fun

BH's for the big fowl is a good idea    ...we have atleast a couple stories a year make the news about a goose wondering a golf course with an arrow in it's head.

Last years they showed video of a goose walking around in a ritzy part of town with an arrow through it's head...got alot of attention...didn't really put hunters in a good light.

On the Geese & Ducks, do you shoot them in the air only or do you also shoot them when their on the ground?

If I'm not mistaken, it's federal law that all migratory waterfowl be taken on the fly.

As for pheasants, I don't go after them a lot but I did get lucky last year. Haven't tried this season yet.

I honetly do not know!

I skimmed the rega and did not see anything, but would most defently shoot an email to the KDWP and ask...I would also print out th response and keep in my billfold....Personaly if legal I would not have beef putting an arrow through one on the ground.

I think wingshooting with a longbow is one of the most fun types of hunting I have ever done.  There is just something about carrying a longbow in the snow and chasing birds.  I've yet to get a pheasant this year - (0 for 2) but I got a couple of ducks on the wing over decoys earlier and it was one of the greatest mornings ever.  Just another unique opportunity that I love traditional achery for...

-ray

P.S.  You will just be cheatin yourself if you shoot 'em on the ground - just my .02

I have seen pictures of old duck arrows the American Indians used & most likely the Euro's too, It has a knot near the point to skip the arrow on the top of the water. I need to fine a pic of it.... Has anyone used anything like that, duck hunting?

I believe there was a member on another trad site who shot arrows like that for waterfowl and they seemed to have worked for him...

If it doesn't kill them outright, the dog can bring them back quickly for the coup de grace.

The Scorpios are supposed to be just for aluminums, but I have used them on Gold Tips with no harm. I decided not to take any chances and found some 2016s to make special bird arrows.
