Title: snow camo,grond hunting,legs?
Post by: 44charlie on December 21, 2007, 11:59:00 AM
i don't own any snow camo per say but i do have white shirt and pants.
what do you think? solid white or broken white if in the brush? even in the winter there's plenty of dark color out there.
do you think deer recognize humans by our leg profile? i often will wear half white ,half camo, but if you stand by a tree trunk your legs stick out.
guess i was thinking too much this morning on stand while i saw no deer til i walked out!

I've been wondering about this myself Charlie.....I've been throwing a BIG white t-shirt over my parka and not doing anything about my legs.  I just think that there are branches, tree trunks, etc. that are dark so if you can keep still you should be ok.

Having said that, there's some guys in my township that hunt wolves over the winter and they use white coveralls.

I would be more worried about the large solid mass of the shirt than my legs.  I would think the large mass would stick out more than the legs...

I will say I have never used snow camo or a white shirt, so I am just conjecturing, and rambling.  But if it works, go for it.  Let us know and I may just have to buy an over sized whitey to try.

Stay safe and have a happy holiday season!

I forgot, a few years back I watched a sales video for some camo (I think it was ASAT) and it showed how even in winter there are more browns in the woods than white.  I bet it is buried in storage, but I will see if I have it out.  My motto is use what ever works for you.  I am never scared to try something new, especially when I have not been seeing many deer!

I made My own from a white hoodie and a pair of painters bibs. Took some leftover walnut stain and a can of gray car primer. Used the primer for vertical stripes, and the stain for some leafy splotches. You need to do this well before season so they have time to air out. I've washed mine a lot and the colors look real good in the snow covered timber.

44C, depends on the ground.  Every situation is unique but here's a good rule of thumb; In thicker woods the best thing to do is go with white legs and a dark top, simulates the effect of dark cover over snow covered ground.  In open terrain go with a white top and dark legs, this simulates low scrub below the lighter coloured background and sky.  In very open ground, like very large snow covered areas, say above the treeline or on tundra go with both a white top and bottom.

Plain white cam is fine, a pattern of dark splotches can be useful but is not crucial, you are going for the overall effect of breaking up your outline.

Thats the way we were taught on our arctic warfare courses back in the day.  By the way, one of my old callsigns was 44 charlie.  (Troop sgt, assault troop, recon squadron...)

For what it is worth here is a pic my wife took of me about a week ago. We were hunting on our new property (please excuse the pink surveyors tape). I had just gotten a Natural Gear snow camo parka and pants. I was not wearing the pants in the photo, but was wearing a pair of fleece snow pants I had gotten from Day One about 10 years ago. The biggest surprise was that the  Day Ones still fit but here you can see what a full snow camo suit might look like. I have killed several deer on the ground in the snow wearing snow camo...it is the funnest way to take a deer, IMO.  Hope the pic helps you.

Just realized she took two pics...a somewhat different view. I think that one of the things about any camo is that it really needs to be similar to the background you are in. For example, today we have snow hanging on all sorts of limbs and bushes while in these pics the snow is pretty much all on the ground. When the snow is clinging to the brush is when the snow camo is the most effective. Right after or during a snow storm is the best time to use it.
