Title: Washington state bowhunter killed in accident
Post by: elkken on September 12, 2010, 03:25:00 PM
It was reported in the Seattle Times newspaper today that a Washington state bowhunter had died in an accident this week. Apparently two hunters were tracking an elk, does not say following a blood trail, when the lead hunter suddenly stopped. The hunter who was following had an arrow nocked and ran into his hunting partner causing the fatal wound. The article does not say where he was struck by the arrow.

I personally do not hunt with an arrow on the string unless I'm in the final approach on a stock or in a tree stand, but I have hunted with and  have seen folks who regularly hunt with an arrow nocked.

Do you hunt with an arrow nocked ?? Be safe out there, your loved ones will thank you.

Was the story verified, as it seems odd in many ways.   Unless they were at a run,  or the lead man fell with force onto the arrow its just hard to believe.

Old time bow mounted quivers w/exposed BH's. My buddy got into the truck & gashed his arm emergency room deep. Too late after the fact.

I never hunt on a stalk with an arrow on the string. Too dangerous. If I were to trip, I could fall on the broadhead and bleed out.

In a ground blind, I do put an arrow on the string, but I'm sitting down at all times when this happens. I'm not moving.

Only if I'm on the final approach and not before and I'm talking about mostly just positioning for the shot.

God bless,Mudd

I do with blunts when squirrel hunting. I used to when still hunting till a friend of mine's buddy was hunting out west and fell a few feet it seems and put the broad head thru his thigh. He was found three days later by search and rescue. He had his belt around his leg but couldn't save himself. NOT how I want too go!!!

I'm also the type of guy who doesn't knock an arrow until I'm close.  Carrying razor sharp broadheads you have to be super carefull.

The really sad part is we or anybody can ask all of the "How'd that happen?" questions they want but it is a "was" now.

The time for questions and thinking is before something happens.

Please, please be safe out there.

So what if you don't get that shot this time. Live to get another chance in the future.

God bless,Mudd

I have seen guys get excited when we were calling elk and chasing a bull. Literally running after him. I finally got them together and read them the riot act. a couple had their arrows on the string and literally running. People get excited and do stupid stuff. Sometimes its the last thing they do. We have a responsibility to share these things and exhort to be safe. sometimes there is no second chance. This is a very sad thing and some man and some family is brokenhearted right now because of one mistake. When someone is so hardheaded that they will not be safe we part company. Nothing kills a hunt faster than someone being unsafe and getting themselves or someone else hurt. There are enough things out there that can get you without that. God Bless you folks and the people that this happened too. Be cool and be safe and insist on it. Steve

No arrow on the string for me. Too many things can go wrong. I have missed many chances at deer because I wasn't ready, but that's OK.

I hunt with an arrow on the bow most of the time, but I treat it more carefully then the barrel of a loaded gun.  I don't put it on until I am hunting, and I take it off when I get out of a hunting area.  Most of the time I am in a hunting area and anything can happen.  I take it off any time I have to go up, down or cross anything with potential tripping of slipping.  I would never walk behind or close to another hunter with an arrow on.

Keep one knocked as I am in a tree or in the blind - if walking no - I took a bad cut across the back of my hand (knuckles bone showing, severalof em) due to a friend walking with a arra ont he string. We were like 14 if I remember correctly on the age - I remember the day everytime I look at my left hand scars are memories in the skin.

God Bless the families involved in the incident. That is very sad.

I always have a blunt on the string, unless I am ready to finish a stalk on a deer.  Even having one in hand can be dangerous if the footing is not certain.  I think that I have just as much chance of falling on one in hand as one on the string.

Yessiree!! That's why I bought 2 new Solo Stalkers to cover my 2blade BH during a stalk. Honestly, I've rarely used them. Might be time.

I do not walk or run with a arrow on the string. This was a very unfortunate accident, but even in the excitement of the chase you have to maintain control of any weapon.

i can understand running a short distance trying to reposition on a bull etc,etc with a nocked arrow.i've done it several times and most likely will do it again.its a gamble but when a big bull gets you going you just dont think straight sometimes.i would never run behind someone that close though.sad story.

I read some of the comments. We live in a pretty sick world gentlemen. Its hard to believe that people actually think like some of these people do. They value the life of an animal more than that of a human. Its just really sick. God Bless you all , let your lights shine and your arrows go where you aim them. Steve

I've slipped or tripped or dropped stuff enough to know better

Too many things can go wrong too quickly

Guys even drop arrows out of treestands and then get stuck coming down in the dark as well!

I have heard of people falling on the nock and goring themselves when they were walking with an arrow on the string.
If you do hunt with an arrow on the string; you can hit branches and things that not only dull the broadhead- but can move your string nock.

When I am stalking and getting close- I will walk with a nocked arrow.

There is always a danger of some kind while hunting.

I believe it, it would be the easiest thing to have happen if the 2nd guy had an arrow nocked. first guy stops and the 2nd guy not looking runs his arrow into the 1sts guys femoral artery, I have heard it happen twice here in Mt.

Sixby, I like your comments. It's not worth it to hunt with people who endanger another's life. Especially after you warn them. Good advice not to carry a nocked broadhead, and we have probably all done it  at one time or another.

Sadly this mans family will probably see some of the comments that people make on the news sites.  The last thing they need to read is that he is being demonized becuase he was a hunter.  It amazes me what people will say and do when they can be anonymous.

Don't be quick to judge, folks. Freak accidents happen.

I lowered my truck onto the handle of my floor jack two weekends ago... My right hand was on top of the jacking tube. I "de-gloved" my right thumb, from tip to the the webbing between my thumb and forefinger. So much effort was made throughout the day to ensure that the vehicle was safe to work under, and at the last minute (tired, dark out, hungry) I made a tragic mistake. The short of it is that I've been out of work without pay for over a week now and it looks like I'll need a skin graft and at least a couple more weeks to recover. The deer season, for me, is over.

Life happens and it happens fast. Take stock in your blessings daily and don't take any limb or part for granted! AND BE CAREFUL!

I'm heartened, though not surprised, by the mature attitudes expressed here by TG'ers. I was sickened by many of the comments posted with the article. Prayers to the two men involved and their families.

The season is upon us and I Pray we hear no more stories of tragedy. Hunt Safe people, and have a rewarding season in the woods we love!

i agree with some of the other guys, we just need to lift the family up in prayer. anything could happen to us. i lost a dear friend of mine 4 months ago, he was working on his brakes as he had for 28 years, his sons truck was on jackstands, one gave way and he was crushed. there were so many people asking how it could happen, it didn't change the pain his family was feeling, and there was certainly no place for negative comments. brothers we need to get back to simply praying for people, and showing compassion.

There was a hunting accident in Oregon this year where a guy shot his buddy in the head while stalking an elk.  I don't know how you could get over something like that.

The story we are hearing here is that the father was hunting with his son, they saw the elk and were moving a few feet forward to get a clean line on the elk. The son was given the go ahead to get the first shot, when moving forward he fell to ground and his father tripped on him landing ontop with an arrow nocked. The arrow went into the chest area.

Am trying to get more info on this.

Prayers for the family and friends for both of these people...

Later....Buzz

A friend of mine had an arrow fall off his string.  When climbing down, he lost his grip and fell a little ways.  The arrow had landed on the nock, sticking up and the broadhead went through his thigh, cutting the femoral artery.  Thank god his friend heard him fall and came running over!  He was able to make a tourniquet, carry him to the truck and get him to the ER.  It did save his life.  Be careful friends.

Thank you for sharing this stroy with us here. I too went to the News paper to read about this and was also stuned by some of the comments I read there. What I think about this accident has no bearing on my praying for these 2 familys. I have to remember that these same people for the most part are the same kind of people who think it is OK to kill a baby because they made a mistake having un-protected sex. So am I surprised by their statements concerning this accident? Not really. Im saddened more then anything. It just proves how far we as a people have degressed into sin. We who have been born again have only the Lord to hope in. So where does that leave the rest of the people of the world? HOPELESS!!!! .......Dusty

I've not come back to this one often. Everytime I try to come to it, I get sick in the stomach.

I cannot imagine the horror that man lives with after having had such a horrid accident take his son and he being behind the incident!

My heartfelt prayers for this man, his family...  :(

I read all the published admonishons about a nocked arrow, but my gracious...in the presence of game...who doesn't have an arrow nocked!

There is a reason someone came up with the word "accident".

Can you begin to fathom the depth of dispair this man lives with? How the holidays will rip him apart? The damage that can ensue to his marriage and familial relationships?

If there were ever a time and place to reach out in prayer for God's mercy, healing and spirit to be upon one of us, this is that time and person(s).

Lord in your mercy...
