Title: Bowhunting Vacation Recommendations
Post by: Seeza on December 19, 2007, 05:02:00 PM
I'm looking for a hunt in the southern US in February.  I would like to take my wife and son along too.  They won't be hunting but would share a tent or hotel.   Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hogs maybe? I don't know where to tell you to go but maybe someone will chime in if you are specific to what type of game. Here in MS and in most states (I guess) all you can hunt in Feb. would be small game, varmints, predators, and hogs. Plenty of hog guys in the south, maybe somebody knows where to find some on public land.

Lots of places to hunt hogs here in FL, if that interests you. What sort of hunt are you interested in, guided, DIY... ?

Eric,
Hogs would be great.  DIY is fine however, with only a week or two and no idea where to go I would not mind paying for some guidance.

Texas has lots of nices outfits with pools and such for the wife and kid and plenty of game to hunt. Most places have something to hunt all year.

Thanks.

Seeza, you might try a PM to RC on here. He lives in Georgia, knows some very good public ground down there, and has shot a boat load of hogs.

You could try Heidi and Joel at the HBarH ranch in Bandera Texas, I took my daughter last winter and we had a great time. Link is below.

Seeza,
If your son is less than 12 or so, you might consider a hog hunt @ Orlando, FL area. That way you could mix in a day hunt or two for hogs with a trip to Disney World. I know a couple of friends who have done it. Might be a great trip for you and your family. February is a PRIME TIME for Disney. No crowds and usually good weather. Internet will help with selection for hog hunt. I will try and get you a name or two. There are a few good ones within an hour of Orlando. One was written up by Jay Campbell in TBM Mag a few issues back.

Moloka'i...
You don't get much more "southern" in the US than Hawaii.

Well I'll 2nd the Florida reccommendation. Plenty of good hog and small game hunting and the DIY hunts can be done on some of the mgt areas, check each areas regs first to see if hogs are legal then. And if you want to fish, East Central Florida is about as good as it gets for winter seatrout and redfish. In fresh water, shad fishing is good and the largemouth bass fishing starts to really heat up.

Jay Campbell is a hunting buddy and I think the spot he wrote about is our hunting grounds. Not a guided hunt operation.

Adjacent to our property is Osceola Outfitters run by Hoppy Kempfer(google him). They run a good operation but may have limited openings for Feb.

The hog population seems above avg for most of the region and this would be a good year to come.

Ausable

This looks like a nice place. Is it a high fence ranch?

No fences. Super nice people. Archery only. I didn't see any hogs, just turkey, does and small bucks. I shot a doe with my daughter right next to me in the DB blind. You only pay for what you shoot. I would like to go back and hunt it during the rut.

I sent an email to H-H get more information from them. I hope you get the chance to go back soon.
