Title: Words, suicide, and learning
Post by: Seeking Trad Deer on January 28, 2008, 08:39:00 PM
Today I learned of a girl who I taught a couple years ago had taken her own life.  She was a pretty girl and my interactions with her were always very positive.  I work in a high school with at risk students.  I never really understood the demons that faced Julie.  Once she said to me that girls in our school were so nasty in thier rumors and actions.  It is such a loss when something like this happens.  I wish people would understand the power words have to hurt or build up a person.  What a better place the world would be if everyone used words to build up people and not tear them down.  Look up to the stars and send a prayer for Julie tonight and all the other young adolescents in our midst.

Pretty Girl. Mean things said and rumors.

We take prayer and God out of schools..because a few people demand it. And then when there is no spiritual anchor amidst the pain of adolescence, we wonder why.

I am recalling the old saying, "We have met the enemy and it is I".

I have a long, long way to go in my Walk and lots that God's already forgiven me. Thank you, Lord.  And yet, if there wasn't prayer, saluting the flag, some sense of accountability in my daily school life, I don't know if I could have made it.

there are more pressures today on kids, sure..more negative choices, but each generation has felt that stress... but one thing for sure, when we allowed God to be taken out of our schools, it became the Devil's playground.

Lord, be with Julie's parents and seek her heart in the choice she made. You alone are omnisicent and know what we cannot. We ask your tender loving care, grace and peace be with her soul and her family and classmates. Help us to know where and what we need, to rally to change the downward spiral in our country so that this might become less prevelant where young souls are tortured to this horrible point of suicide.

We ask in Jesus's name. Amen.

Man that is SAD.  I am with heavy heart as I send prayers to you and family.  Suicide from anyone is bad but from a child it is unbearable. My 14 year old son was chastized by his school principle and suspended for 2 days because he was "bullying" another student.  He said all that he did was make fun of the kid.  I tried to explain to him that ANY wrong words or actions towards another person is considered bullying.  It causes alot of hurt and missery.  Kids all over the world have taken thier lives for just that reason.  Hopefully people will start to learn this and think twice before they say hurtful things to thier fellow man.  My 2 cents

This really hurts to hear. I wish there were some magic words to tell the family, but there just are not any.  Prayers sent to the family.

Prayers sent , I have seen kids built up and knocked to their knees emotionally by a few words . All of us and especially kids look for some sign of approval or word of encouragement . I try to make it a point to say something positive whenever I have the oppurtunity , even when we don't think they are paying attention something might be getting through . I agree that since Prayer has been taken out of school our kids have been the ones who have really suffered , Fred
