Title: Request for guidance / support
Post by: ArcticArcher on October 24, 2007, 10:59:00 AM
I have a big dilemma.  I have just been offered a job which I really think I will enjoy, however there is a significant pay cut.  The job will bring more security and stability as opposed to being a defense contractor, which I am now.  I like the job I have now, or more so the people I work with, but my heart is not really into it.

Is life about following the money or should be your heart and passion?

The job is an instructor for Child Abuse investigators.  I feel very passionate about this area of work as when in the military, I worked these types of cases and saw the horror in those young eyes and the devastation it brought to them and their families.  I know in my heart of hearts this is the right decision.  Its for the kids.

I think I have already made my decision but its still a tough one.

I think at some point in our lives we have to follow our hearts and passions, especially when we have the opportunity to make a potential difference for so many people.

Thanks for allowing to vent a little, but this is one of those life changing events.

In His Name,

Nick

Nick,

Dave's words are sage, but having had similar decisions, I know the angst that can come with it. We're also called to be good fiscal managers and taking cuts in an ever spiraling economy takes some real "stones."

I've read often and still contemplate the thought that Jesus doesn't care what we do for a living, He does care how we live what we're doing.

My similar recent decision was easier...to take way below market and try to change a company from inside out and know what a fight it will be... because there was little coming in at the time.  But it's still similar in that I'm trying to focus on using God's loaned skills to do good...help a company stay solvent and keep those 20 people employed...

Reading between the lines and seeing the passion in some words vs. others shared, I too think you know the right choice...

Just seems that you're doing the Provider Shuffle to wrestle through the details.

You'll know if to "step out in faith" or go with the gold. Let Christ guide your heart and best wishes!

Thanks for the support and words of wisdom.  I am taking the job and have the full support of my wife.  It may be tough (financially) at first but the satisfaction will be more than enough reward.

Money will never bring the contentment and satisfaction that an occupation that we have a passion for. I was reading a book by Francis Schaeffer and he noted that he walked by a junk yard every day and it dawned on him that the material things that we work so hard for will eventually end up in a junk yard or in someone else's home. Not that nice "things" are wrong in themselves, but when they replace the hope and confidence that we should have in Him, we start dealing with the issue of idolatry. I think you have made the right choice and do not be surprised when there are things that come into you life that the world can not provide....John

Possom,

Reading your good words above, I recall something from the cynical 70's (yeah, I'm that old and older)  :)  that went, "All you have and call your own, once belonged to someone else and they are now dead...and you will be"

As I recall, it was outa "Mad Magazine" that my boss used to read and bring to work and hang up quotes, but... it still fits even though nothing spiritual was likely intended!

Good point for us all to remember, Possum Trot. In God's eyes, it really "isn't the one who dies with the most toys wins!"  :)

thanks.

Thanks for the words of wisdom from everyone!!  I start the new job on Nov 26 and am looking forward to it very much.  My supervisor is a retired soldier / Special Agent I have known for over 15 years.  He's pretty excited about me starting work there also.

There is a saying among officers who work child abuse cases and it goes something like this:  "If we don't speak for the children of abuse, who will?"  This hits home for me and I feel blessed that I may be able to make a difference in their lives, by ensuring the ones who will now speak for them will know how to say it by conducting thorough and proper investigations.

Again thanks everyone and of course Our Lord and Savior for his divine guidance.

Nick

Nick

I currently work for children's protective services in Michigan.  We need good christian people working in the field.  I believe that God has called me to this line of work and I have now been doing this for 10 years.  It scares me how christian values are being put by the wayside with raising children.

It sounds like God is calling you into this field.  My prayers will be with you.  It amazes me the impact we can have on working with families going through these types of issues.  Keep strong in the faith.  You will have the opportunity to make a great difference for the children and instruct the parents how to be better parents.

God Bless,
Todd

On one hand, brother, it's sad to know how desperate a situation this Child Protection really has become in our society.

On the other hand, Thank You, Jesus, for people like yourself and Todd, who are out there not only enforcing man's law but witnessing to God's law and love in the midst of this!

Congratulations! Keep the Son in your eyes and all the rest will work toward His purpose!

Prayers with you.

Nick,
I left my job once for another job (as a Defense contractor for the Navy, no doubt) and hated it.  Got a $10K pay raise to go...and took a $10K pay reduction to go back to my old job.
If you can do what you like and really feel called to do it, the money doesn't matter.  As long as you have enough to live on.  A person that has a job that they are truly passionate about is blessed.
May God lead you on the right path.
