The Fringe From Hell!!!
Thanks to all here for the help & advice over the fringeing on this sheath (it's a bugger, I tell you!)
Right, details.
I made the knife as a bit of a special, for a show I've been invited to exhibit at, this coming weekend. The blade is forged from a very old, 14" Harris Mill File (I'm presuming it's W2 File steel) It's 10-1/2" overall, 6-3/4 of which is blade, which has a distal taper, tapered tang & flat ground with a convex secondary edge grind. It was edge quenched in hot Sunflower oil & then given a second low temperature quench in brine. It's had 3 tempering stages, 200degC for 3 hrs, 220 for 2 hrs & finally 230 for 2 hrs.
The handle is crosscut Olivewood, with 2 black spacers & 2 3/32" brass pins.
I've made the sheath so that it can be worn any way. Right of left handed, forwards or rear facing. 3mm Veg tanned leather, handstitched with artificial sinew & with a full welt cut into a 4" fringe (never again!!!)
Here's the pics as promised.....

Great work Rob! That handle is beautiful. When you talked about fringe yesterday I thought you were doing a bit of overkill, but I really like that sheath. Well done my friend.

Great job on the knife. I like the taper on the blade. I believe that edge grind cuts much better than a hollow ground edge. Just my opinion. But really nice work on the knife and sheath. Brokenwing

Wow Rob, you really are progressing! That is a definately a gorgeous knife and sheath. Too often I see great knives shackled with mediocre sheaths....that one there is in no such danger.
-
Way to go Rob. That is one great looking knife and sheath. Sure would look great on my belt. :bigsmyl: :clapper:
-
Very Nice, Great Work!! why is it called a riflemans knife?
-
Very neat knife-- the olivewood is exceptional. I like the fringed sheath. Keep up the good work and keep sharing pics and methods (quenching and tempering, etc). Larry

Wow! I was really looking forward to this, this morning and I must say my expectations were exceeded. That is awesome. I could see that hanging on a wide belt over a buckskin riflemens shirt. Great job Rob!!

Now ya know why we dont like to do fringe....
-
Thanks folks! It's really nice to know that other people like the work you do. Kinda a self affirmation thing :D
Matt, it's called a Rifleman's Knife because it's styled after the wad cutting/self defense knives, famously carried by the Colonial Frontier Fighters of the 18th Century.
-
Nice work. What weight of leather is the sheath made out of?
-
It's around 1/8" (don't know what weight that'd be, 7.5 or 8oz at a guess)
-
Oh, that is cool ! I love that wood. Nice knife, anybody would be proud to be seen with that one....besides who would say anything after you pull it out to show them !

Not to hijack this thread or anything, but I have been wondering something that maybe you can give a quick explanation on. How do you get the leather formed to the knife like that? Do you just put the knife in the sheath when it is wet and then somehow clamp it down until it is dry?
Oh and by the way, that is very awsome looking knife and sheath. If it needs an owner, I would be honored to take it off your hands.

Yes!! That works great!! You're go to guy is ClintV for questions...he has made us several and are top in quality and lifetime use, not to mention beauty as being very good on your eyes!!

Oh, I am, I am :D
That is SO my thing :D
The wife 'n' I are looking at Property in NC/VA as we speak. Hoping to be there in the next 2 years. The only thing holding us back is one of our dogs. She's 14 & the travelling would probably kill her. We wouldn't dream of re-homing her, but we daren't put her on a plane. She's totally blind, but otherwise fit & healthy, but has panic attacks when she get's stressed.
The other two are coming wth us!
-
might want to look at property in N.Y, property can be found at a good price if ya look in the right places. taxes are killer though!
-
You might check Northeast Texas. Land values are good and fairly low taxes. There are several of us that would welcome you here so we can see your knives upclose and personal.LOL Lots of deer and hogs around there.
-
Hey, what's wrong with VA? LOL. He can have tea with UK bowman.
