Title: Question about Futurewood
Post by: warpedarrow on August 24, 2014, 09:15:00 PM
Has anyone on here ever tried refinishing a Futurewood riser on a '73 Bear bow?  I have one that is a bit ugly and I'm thinking about redoing it.  I'm just curious about whether or not the color goes all the way through the riser or if it is just a stain on the surface.  Any information could be helpful and I thank you in advance.

There's a refinished '71 Super Kodiak pictured in a PowWow thread at    1971 Super Kodiak touched up by Centaur Archery (http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=139259)

I have just acquired a '72 that is in need of intensive care (including a very badly dinged limb edge). I will probably send it out, so this question is much on my mind these days.

The dye and resin penetrates throughout the wood. After the Futurewood process the maple becomes a new type of wood, a future wood!

If you like you could cut the handle in half, and it will be impregnated throughout.

If you go to the Bear Archery website you will find an explanation about how Futurewood is created in the information of the Takedown bows

I did go to the Bear website this past Sunday and read that.  I just don't know that futurewood today is exactly the same as forty years ago.  When I sanded the Grizzly where the wood was scuffed on the sight window, it came out quite a bit lighter in color as did the green on the tip overlays.  I am still a bit skeptical about doing a full blown restore on one but willing to try if anyone has a bow for me to experiment on.

Yes Gary, the green. Neat looking bow.
