I hope this is the right place to post this,if not I apologize.It is history related so I thought this would be the best place to put it.
I was asked to display some of my archery collectibles at an upcoming event at the Oakland County Sportsman's Club near Waterford/Clarkston Michigan the week-end of August 10th and 11th.They will have other booths there as well but I may be the only one displaying anything as opposed to offering services.Would love for anyone close by,able and interested to stop by.I plan on displaying some of the rare and oddball items I've aquired over the years,some I've shown on this site.Also planning a nice Ann Marston display.Anyone not familiar with Miss Marston should check her out.She was one of the very best female archers,winning 11 National titles,breaking many records,as well as being a T.V. celebrity and won the Miss Michigan beauty pageant in 1959.She also won the Talent Award in the Miss America beauty pageant by shooting her bow and arrow.Not only could she shoot a bow better than most,she was a beautiful lady as well.
Just thought I would put it out there as I would love to meet some of the Tradgangers in person that I've only met through corrospondence here on the web.You can google the Oakland County Sportsman's Club to find directions and more information.It's easy to get to and it looks like a nice club.Bring your bow too as I believe there will be some shooting available.

I know Chuck,it is a bit of a ride for someone like yourself.But... if you are bored and have absolutely nothing else to do,would love to see you again.They're not giving me alot of space so I don't know how much i'll be able to squeeze in there but whatever I can fit will be out for viewing.

Great pictures Tony. She was quite the beauty.
Ray-Ann did use Bear bows and equipment. Although she did live in Michigan,she was originally from England. I'm sure she had offers from all of the big archery manufacturers at that time to use(promote) their equipment. Bear and Ben Pearson were two of the biggest but I believe she used Hoyt bows as well.I have a bow case that belonged to her that I believe is marked Hoyt. I will be displaying it along with some of her other items.From what I've read about her she sounds like she was quite a remarkable person on and off the stage.

Yes, there were a lot of good bows being produced back then (Wing, Bear, Pearson). It's good to see folks carrying on the display tradition of the old bows and other equipment. I think about my old friend John Grumley a couple of times a month and used to love stopping by his house and seeing his old stuff and his dad's bows. His collection of his dad's bows was incredible and John's workshop was spotless and full of lot's of little tidbits of history. My only regret is I didn't do a formal interview of him for an article before he passed (I know he contributed to the TBM article about his dad). Anyway, good luck with the upcoming show.

Thanks for the well wishes. I too just couldn't get enough of John's display when he would have it set up . I first remember seeing it at some of the Michigan Bowhunters Rondezvous many years ago ,when Floyd Eccelston would have his broad head display there as well. I could spend all day just looking over all those wonderful pieces of history. Floyd and John were both always a pleasure to talk with.I'm sure they helped to light the fire in me for collecting and displaying this old stuff.
Traverse City isn't that far from Clarkston,right off of I-75. LOL. Stop on by. I'm no John Grumley but I will have a few of his dad's bows there. John

Sure would like to see John, the Ladies don't get enough recognition for sure. Thats great you put a display together. I have a arrow board with alot of early lady archers, and a few other items bows etc. maybe some day I'll get to making one up. Work sure does interfere with getting things done.

I agree with the ladies not getting the attention they deserve. I have to admit,in all the years I 've been interested in and have collected old archery items,not much is ever spoken about some of the women that excelled at the sport. Babe Bitzenberger's name is probably most familiar to all of us here but I never really heard much about Ann Marston. When her name was mentioned in conversation all I usually heard was that she was a beauty queen and was trampled by a bull. Also heard she was injured by a pig,which caused her to go blind and die.Never heard about what a wonderful archer she was even as young as 9 or 10 years old. She competed against the adult women while still in her early teens,beating many of them and breaking records,many of her own included. She won 11 national titles,was a Miss Michigan winner and won the talent award in the Miss America pageant by shooting her bow and arrow.She was also a t.v. celebrity,appearing on many of the popular shows at that time including The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,the Jack Parr show,and the Morning Show with Dick Van Dyke just to name a few.After losing her sight,due to complications from diabetes,not by being trampled by a bull,which did happen at one of her shows,she became a manager for many of the local rock bands including the MC5. She even met the Beatles when they were at their peak in the 1960's. She was a very humble and giving person I have heard. Unfortunately she died at the very young age of 32 after suffering a stroke. A very sad end to a remarkable yet short life. I never really knew anything about her and all of her accomplishments until doing a little research. We've all heard of Fred Bear,Howard Hill,Ben Pearson,Chet Stevenson,but not much about the likes of Ann Marston. I hope to introduce her to a few more people. John

It sure would.She was a beautiful woman.Here's a short video clip I found of a very young Ann Marston shooting with her father Frank when they still lived in England.Ann was only 10 years old at the time.

Here's another teaser for the show.Just got my mannequin in the mail today(Boy did I hear it from the boys at work about this.Nothing I can repeat here!)
My wig and boots came also so I couldn't wait to put one of Ann's original show outfits on the mannequin to see how it would look.I think it looks awesome myself.This is such a piece of history.I was told by the person I got the outfit from that I am the only one to have one of her outfits other than those in museums!I am so thankful and honored.I knew so little about Ann until recently.She really was quite a talented and determined young lady.
The Miss Michigan banner is also one of hers.The poster next to her is enlarged from an original photo of Ann wearing this very same outfit complete with Robin Hood hat.

How did I know that you would like the curves of those two take-downs more than the curves of my mannequin or Ann Marston!LOL. I do have to agree with you though,they are pretty easy on the eyes. Hopefully I'll have another special riser for you to drool over before too long. I know I will.

Most of the risers I am showing here are right-handed,but I can tell you there are also a couple of lefties in this bunch that would make a lefty like you pass out.If I get a chance to get some pictures of them I will post them up for you.You'll want to be sitting down for those.
Hfactor- Thanks very much.I know for most of us here on the collectors forum we get alot more excited seeing some vintage bows and arrows,myself included.I never thought I would get so excited over a sequined dress and hat,especially with a mannequin wearing them.But since reading about Ann Marston and all she accomplished AND overcame in her short life,knowing that this was one of her very own outfits that she performed in really brought her to life,at least for me.I was told that this very outfit was on display in a museum in Arizona along with some items from Emmett Kelly Jr. who was a well known celebrity clown at that time.Perhaps some of us "older" guys might recognize his name.He was very good friends with the Marston family.I am very fortunate to be the current caretaker of these items and look forward to bringing Ann to life for others to appreciate.

Here's a few more items that I will be displaying with Ann's outfit.The first is a program from the 28th Annual Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.Ann is featured in this issue.I learned that Ann was only the 2nd woman and the youngest memeber ever elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.Quite an accomplishment.

Here's a few small items of Ann's.One of her shooting gloves and two membership cards.One card is from the Midwestern Archery Association from 1958 and the other is from the Zeppelin Rifle Club Inc. from 1957.
Last is one of many trophies Ann won in her lifetime.This one is from the Metropolitan Open where Ann was the Junior Champion,Free Style in 1962. History!!

Started putting together some more items for the display,so I dug out one of my small display cases to see what would fit.I may display some of the take-down risers in this one.Wish it were a bit bigger but it is what it is.Top three risers are pre-production B-risers with "brass bears",bottom is a type I production B-riser signed by the man.Experimental limbs are what I call "pea-green" glass in color with a reddish phenolic core as opposed to the usual black.Lots more to do,I'm sure I'll be changing things up as I go along,but I thought the risers looked nice against the red felt background.

Thanks Dave.Not as nice as your proto-type from Bob Kelly.That is an awesome riser.The stripe on the riser above riser is actually green like on the Gainesville green-stripers.It might just look blue in the pictures.Bear was really doing some fantastic things back in the 1960's.

I don't know where you come up with these awesome pictures of Ann but I love 'em! She looks pretty young in this one,possibly early teens or even younger.She could probably give Howard a few pointers.
I'm not positive on the correct answer to your quiz,but knowing Fred Bear and his savvy business sense,I would have to guess that he wanted Ann to represent Bear Archery in 1959,although I believe all of the above might apply.
From what Ann's aunt has told me,the Marston's were very good friends with Fred Bear and I have seen some earlier photos of her shooting Bear bows,some with a walnut compass Kodiak.
As far as her height,I'm not sure how tall she was or what length bow she preferred.I'm still learning more and more about her all the time.I'll have to see about that one.In some of the photos I have of her with a bow in hand,the bow appears to be longer than a 60" bow.Thanks again Tony for the great pic of Ann and archery legend Howard Hill.

Had the show this week-end at the Oakland County Sportsman's Club.Lots of work but it was well worth it.Had some help from the neighbor girls and one of my son's buddies to load,unload,set-up,and bring it all back home.Couldn't have done it without them.Enjoyed the facilities,the people there,and some of the great stories.Here's a few pics for you,hope you enjoy.

Here's one of my Little Delta Bow.Got the bow from Joe St.Charles.It's a leather grip,camo,52" Kodiak Magnum that was brought into Glenn's shop in Washington state many years ago by a gentleman that said he had gotten the bow from Glenn back around 1960.Glenn believes it's the bow shown lying acroos the pile of antlers in the large photo in the background and most likely the very first Kodiak Magnum ever made.

Here's a shot of some older items from back in the 1940's.Some old Bear leather items,a couple of old magazines with Fred Bear on the cover,an early Bear Products marked fletching jig,Nels Grumley's bamboo flyrod,an old fish-spliced osage stave and a couple of completed osage longbows,the one to the rear is a Grumley "Deerslayer" take-down.

Rick-You're very welcome. Always enjoy being the history lesson at the shows.
Shane-You have a keen eye grasshopper.Your baby wasn't able to make the show this time. I actually had all of the take-down Grumleys packed and ready for show time but there just wasn't enough room for everything. The one take-down Grumley I did display was squeezed in at the last minute. I was fortunate that the vendor that was to be set up next to me decided to set up outdoors so I acquired more floor space and tables. My initial space was almost 122 of what you see here so I was able to put up more displays. Your baby will be making some appearances I promise.

That is good to hear! Rather see the items safe than crammed into a vehicle just to get them there. I have just acquired another item that I need more info on from fellow collectors. It's a Fred Bear Olsens knife. Has Freds signature in the wood handle. That knife was given to a guy who owned a dry cleaners in MI and became friends with Fred. It was passed down in the family and I found it up for sale on another site.

Here's a couple of the take-down display.The blackish colored "riser" is a blank from the factory.A chunk of futurewood in it's early stages of becoming a C-riser.Rough cut out,fiberglass overlays glued on,grooves for the latches cut.A chrome latch assembly is shown next to it.On the right is a custom Bear C-riser.

This one shows Fred's 8mm movie camera bought in Gaylord,Michigan,near Grayling in 1948.shortly after Fred moved operations to Grayling from Detroit.The suitcase is one of Fred's that he used on some of his hunts while travelling the world.This one has "FRED BEAR" in gold lettering on it and a hotel tag from the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage,Alaska that says "Mr. Fred Bear" on it.Imagine where this suitcase has gone.

It is some wonderful history Chuck.Amazing how much we all still love to see this old stuff after all these years.That Nimrod is a pretty cool quiver.Wish I knew the story behind it.It's generally considered a hunting quiver considering the way it's designed but someone appears to have wanted one for the target range.Unless they were planning on hunting Panda bears.Hmmm..... Have to see if there's a "Made in China" tag on it somewhere!

I had to go back and look over your pics again John. I must say I'm impressed with your display talent. You have a good eye and great stuff. I know it took a lot of searching and scrounging to find everything. There's more out there. Just when you think you've seen it all, something new pops up. You really need to get to Omaha one of these days. Stop by Minnesota and I'll drive the rest of the way there.

Larry- you would be welcome to stop by anytime you're in Michigan. All the cold,snow and sub-zero temperatures we're having would be a nice change from the drought,fires and flooding that you're enjoying out there in California.Crazy weather!!

Ray- You are very welcome.Glad to know there are still some of us that enjoy the history of archery and bowhunting and still appreciate this old stuff.Sad how many people will walk by all this wonderful history without even a second glance sometimes when it is set up.I know with all the new and innovative gadgets available for todays modern archers,this "blast from the past" isn't for everyone.Glad to know there are still a few of us old souls out there that do appreciate it.You too will have to stop by the next time I have the opportunity to set the display up,since you are a fellow Michiganiac.Would love to meet you in person.

Some of the craziest weather I have seen in years. I agree with Ray above. Keep us informed as to your next set up. I have been known to do a bit of traveling to look at Archery History displays.

Ray-I have only set up my display at Compton one time. It was a great time. Set up in the enclosed building with Wade Phillips and John Grumley. I believe that between the three of us it was the most Grumley bows ever assembled in one place at the same time. I had the least of the three of us but it was quite a feast for the history buffs. Also got to meet Dick Lattimer in person for the first and only time. With so much Bear Archery related items on display in that building that day,besides the Grumley bows,I couldn't help but wonder how it must have made Dick feel seeing all of that wonderful stuff on display in memory of his old boss and friend. I'm sure he was happy.
If I do plan on setting up at a show here in Michigan I will let you know.Would love to see you there.

If that was at one of the first Compton shoots, I was there (I remember chatting with John Grumley and him taking me over to another display to show me something). I know Wade was displaying as well at that shoot, because John mentioned him by name. John was a good friend and what a pleasure it was to talk with him over the 20 years I knew him, sometimes for hours at a time. I still think of him often. This picture was on another thread, but I'll add it here as a tribute to John. This was an article I did for TBM about the history of the Shrewhaven bow camp:

I'm just finishing a rework of a 1959 Kodiak. I've done a 1955 Kodiak with my daughter and a 1957 Kodiak as well. I also picked up a factory camo 1958 Kodiak (no rework needed and in excellent shooting condition), so I'm going to have some fun comparing the 4 side by side once it gets above 20 degrees outside here.
