Title: Are you a collector???.....
Post by: Sean B on May 02, 2013, 10:11:00 PM
....or do you just appreciate vintage bows and accessories???  I started collecting a few 50's and 60's Bears, and quivers, but then I stopped, sold them to by others.  I have a '67 Kodiak Hunter and a Red Wing Hunter that I have no plans on getting rid of.  Bought them both from Charlie (Cyclic-River)My K Hunter is set up with a green spring arm quiver loaded with Razorhead capped woodies and, old camo limb covers.  My Red Wing Hunter is a '62 I believe.  Its one of my all time favorites!!!  I also make sure that I have my Bowhunters Kit on my belt that's holing up my WWII camo pants.  I definitely feel like I missed out on an era!!

Does you Red Wing Hunter have a Rosewood riser and little tips?

I bought one in 1962.  It was a great bow until the limb cracked up.  Wish I still had it.

I loved that bow    "[dntthnk]"   Unfortunately I wasnt He-Man lol.  Glad you like them Sean.  The K Hunter's grip and I didnt get along.  Loved the way the bow shot though.

To answer your question, No I am not a collector but I am an admirer.  I only keep bows I shoot and narrowed it down to 5 classics on my rack.  I am sure I will add more and peddle here and there but decided collecting is too much work.

I love some of the collections that I've seen on here. actually all of them!!  Last year at Bear Quest, it was awesome to talk to Bowdoc, and pick his brain about Bears. I shot his take down...what a smooth shooter!!!  I fell in love!!!

I know what you mean Sean.  I have been grateful for the information collectors have given me over the years.  I am intrigued by archery history plus I love to hear old stories, old hunts and see old bows.

I just know personally I cannot bring myself to own 50 bows, I would have 400 and a divorce. It's not what's most important for me right now lol.

Collector is a state of mind IMO. I have a lot of bows.........maybe 100, but would not flatter myself by saying I am a collector-I'm just a nut-case!

I am with Bjorn. Have some excellent pieces and would like to be thought of as a collector, but those are some big shoes to fill in my opinion. After having the pleasure to visit the Harby home. I am not even a drop in the bucket compared to people like Al. It's a great feeling however to own one of his finest pieces.

I'll be turning 50 this year and have come to the conclussion that I need to focus my attention to one type of bow. My choice is the vintage Grayling Bear recurves. These bows are a weakness of mine along with all the vintage Bear hunting gear. Not really a collector. I just buy the stuff that suits my fancy. I've gone so far that these days I'm even shooting vintage Bear cedar shafts. The 45# Kodiaks and Super Ks are my favorite. Lot easier on the shoulders also.

Just a "user and lover of vintage bows" here.

I'll be a collector as soon as I win one of the lotto things!

Every time I find one that I intend to keep, someone comes along with deeper pockets and "makes me an offer I cannot refuse".

Praise the Lord I have his help finding more.  This week was a good example and I have a post here on that.

However, if I HAD a collection, I'd just stress out trying to decide what to hunt with!  Seems I just cant get past TWO at a time. LOL!

God Bless

Slowboke. Funny you talk about chosing just one hunting bow. Going through that dilema now and started a topic about it on another site ;-)

I like to think of myself as a "caretaker" of a few old classics.

All of this old archery tackle will outlive me so it will be in someone else's "collection" some day.

Trap hit it right on the nose.  I believe most of us are just "caretakers".

I figure unless you have a basement full of archery stuff......let's say like Wade......then you probably don't quite fit into the category of collector.

I thought I was a collector until I hung around here..
Now I have much smaller horns, but they are not quite as green...
