I would like to try wood arrows out of my longbow, but I am having a very hard time finding the right ones. I shoot a Hill style longbow with a b-50 string at 62 lbs and 31 3/4". The shafts I am using now are full length 2018's, 33". The fly great. I can't seem to find a chart to tell me what spine arrow I need. Aparently I am the only archer wtih a draw length over 31 inches!!!!!! I would also like a shaft weight of about 450 grains so I could make 600 to 650 grain arrows. I see that 3 rivers and rose city both have test kits, to see what spine shoots best for you. That is what I am looking for, however both of the kits say that the total legnth will only make a 31" arrow. I have found two arrow makers who will make the longer arrow I need, but I can't afford to buy 3 dozen arrows to find what spine I need. Does any body out there have this problem, any help will be appreciated!
I don't have that problem; but Ted at raptorarchery.com will guide you to the right choices and put together a test kit to suit your needs.
A 65-70 will give you very similar results to a 2018, but I think you may also fight some length issues. Many wood shafts are 32" and you need about an inch and a half just for tapers.
If you ask, 450 grain shafts shouldn't be too hard to find in that spine range.
Clem,
A 2018 is a 68# spine by my calculations and measurements on the Spine-O-Meter. So I think the 65-70# advice is in the right place.

Clem,
Give a call to Bill at Allegany Mountain Arrow Woods. He makes wood shafts that are longer than 32" (which is the length of POC's) I have some purplehearts that he made me that were 36" and I know he can make other wood shafts at that length too. dino
If you can get the shafts long enough, you should be able to buy 6 at 65/70 and 6 at 70/75 and see what will tune in best. Another option for you would be to go up some in spine weight with a 32" shaft, put on a convert-a-point and use screw-in heads. It'll increase your FOC but that's not a bad thing. You'd get a 32" length that way.
I think at that length you will need a much higher spine, add 5#s to a shaft for every inch over 28"s and you are almost 4"s over that. I would say you need 80-84# woodies. Go to www.arrowsbykelly.com (http://www.arrowsbykelly.com) and check out his spine charts and recommendations. That is what I come up with using them. Shawn
