Title: Is this a Chet Stevenson or Grumley bow?
Post by: el greco on July 04, 2012, 02:20:00 PM
I bought this bow from a guy that his dad used to own an archery shop.He told me this bow is from 1930s or 1940s,osage orange 100 pounds.I currently draw bows in the 70pounds range no problem but with this beast I cant draw my arrows past 22".Somebody told me this might be a bow Chet Stenenson made.Any ideas?

Chris, That is really nice looking old bow.
I do not feel that it is a Grumley, not his style of build. I can not make a guess if Stevens built it. I have never seen any of his bows.
Maybe some others that are better in the know will be along to help. Be patient as they may be out for todays holiday.
Good luck with you search for information.

Chuck

I saw a guy shoot a 100# Osage bow once. About halfway thru the draw he heard a popping sound and then he looked like this,

I'm serious, it was Bowdoc's omellette that made me look like that. He told me I could shoot #150 bows after eating it !

Not a Grumley or Stevenson , looks more like a William S Morgan to me , Morgan was one of Ben Pearsons teachers. Morgan made lots of osage bows and if you notice the handle looks a lot like some of the early Pearsons with the black strip along the top and bottom of handle.

Now that you mention it Ted,it does have that pearson look to it. I looked at one of his osage bows from years ago and it was very well done. I have never heard of his teacher,Mr.Morgan.
Funny how you can sort of I.D. theses old bows by style and little details like you mention.
Good info,Thanks

I am not an old bow expert, nor do I play on on television, but I have seen a few of Chet Stevenson's bows, and they didn't really look like that.  FWIW   Nice looking old bow.

I've handled this bow at El greco's place , and I have no doubt it is solid . It took both of us to string it ! I agree with Mr. Fry . It does have that Pearson look in the handle !
