Title: So how did I do?
Post by: CavScoutArcher on June 14, 2012, 09:50:00 PM
Howdy Gang,
I just wanted to share some pics of a project that I have been working on and have just recently finished. This bow was built for my old man and will be given to him for his b day this year. He is an avid hunter and bowfisherman. It was he who started me in all of this. I redid this bow with the idea of it being the "perfect" bowfishing rig. It is a 57lb Green K-Mag. I completely stripped and sanded it. In addition to that. I added some personal touchs. I added some riser inserts that make attacting a AMS retriever ideal. I switched out the bubble coin for an earlier flush mount brass style. The bubble coin makes it hard/impossible to mount a reel without spaceing it out from the riser, thus throwing off the balance of the bow. And of course, you can't have a bear bow without a coin! The new coin is inlayed in the riser and flush.  I also added a bicentennial quarter to the riser as well. It is inlayed into the wood and fits flush with the riser. It was not an easy thing to get accomplished considering the sexy curves that the k-mags have.  Why a bicentennial drummer boy quarter you ask?  My Dad collects them and has since they were minted. He has close to 500 of the things. I thought it would be a nice personal touch. Finshed off with his nickname from when we would shoot bowfishing tournaments together. The bow has been finished in no less than 8 coats of urathane on the limbs and 10 on the riser and tips.

While this is not the direction that I take most of my bow projects, I thought this one came out alright.  Think he'll like it?

nice job, cool carp bow. I am finding it difficult to make the flat areas of the limbs look really nice with hand applied (wipe on) type finishes.

Thanks guys.  I am usually sacrilegious when it comes to putting holes into bows, esp the old bears. But I figured that this one had a special purpose and that there are still plenty of greenies to go around; I rationed that for this one time it would be ok. Still I cringed when I drilled the riser for the inserts and the coins....

Bow looks great.

I started collecting those coins, I had about 20 bucks worth and then discovered Girls. I think they are still at my parents house.

Your Dad is going to Love the Bow and the thought and work put into it!
