Title: 66" kodiak with white glass?
Post by: Xavier on April 28, 2012, 09:19:00 PM
Which year would have a 66" kodiak with white glass? I might be purchasing one, no pics yet. What year were they made?
Thanks.

Xavier,

It sounds like you're describing a 1958 Kodiak.  Does this bow have a leather grip?  If so, it's definately a 1958.  Fred Bear decided to build the Kodiak with white glass in 1958 to commemorate his first "bow killed" Polar Bear.  He shot prior Polars but they had to be dispatched with a gun at the last moment.  They were only made this way one year.  If it's in really nice condition it's a real prize and a great shooting bow.  If I'm wrong about the reason for the white glass, someone please chime in.  Enjoy,

Yep, White Glass in the Kodiak spells a '58. Unless you found an oddball or unique bow, which is totally possible!

A '58 is one Kodiak I never got my hands on for some reason!

Awesome, thanks. Yes, apparently it has a leather wrapped handle.

I do believe that there was only one 66 Kodiak with white glass? Anyone know which Kodiak I am talking about? Here is a hint. May, 11 1966. Correct me if I am wrong; which very well could be.

Could also be a white glass '57 Kodiak.

I believe that Fred's first bow and arrow polar bear was taken on May 11, 1966. He had hunted them twice before, in 1960 and 1962. One was lost when it broke through the ice, the other was shot by his Inuit guide.

Ohh, now watch the old video if you have it at home, or I think you can find it on youtube somewhere. He had that 66 Kodiak custom made with white glass, so I have been told.

Shane,
I think the '66 Kodiak Fred used on his polar bear hunt had the glass painted white if I remember a previous discussion about the bow.I believe Wade enlarged a photo of a poster showing some of Fred's hunting bows including the '66 Kodiak and it appeared that the limbs were painted white.I could be wrong but I seem to remember this.Either way,it's a cool bow to be certain.
