Title: Bear Bow Hunters Kit
Post by: Wyostikbo on April 07, 2012, 11:57:00 PM
I've seen some posts about the Bear knife, file & stone kit on this forum in the past. Is there a source to buy a reproduction or at least the parts to assemble one on your own?
Thanks,
Brent

The parts needed would be a Western 648 knife, a bear file, and a norton stone. Put those items together wih a leather sheath to hold them and you are on your way. Finding reproductions of those is not really going to happen.

Brent,
I just bought a very nice repro Bowhunters kit minus the knife.  It was made by Matt Foley -  his handle is cuboodle and he has an ad with pictures in the Sponsor Classifieds.
Just got it yesterday, about 4 days after I ordered it, and it is very well made.  Matt supplied the file (with a sweet curly maple handle) and the Norton stone - now I'm trying to track down a knife for it.
Matt built mine a little shorter in length to better suit the Puma Hunters Pal knife  (which is one of my favorite knives that I recently had stolen) but also does them to fit the knife that originally came with them which as wadde said, was a Western 648.  The 648's are easy to find on the big auction site.  The Pumas  (which Papa Bear sometimes carried in his) are a little trickier and quite a bit more expensive.

By the way- anybody got an older (60's-70's) Hunters Pal  in good shape they dont need and would like to sell?     :)

Also, the Bowdoc makes a repro Bowhunters Kit  (minus the knife, file and stone I think) and has them on the big auction site once in a while.  I'm sure his are very well made too.

Hope this helps!

Terry

Following on from Terry, I also got one of Matts sheaths about a month ago. Quick service and quality work. He threw in the Norton stone and sent me a file handle also.  The Nicholson Mill file works. Most hardware stores. I also using  Hunters Pal Puma picked up on the auction site. For the pocket on the back an old schrade shapening steel fits in also.
Bowdoc has a sheath on the auction site ending today.

Harry Leidy (Takedown on tradgang) also makes a very nice one. I bought one from him complete (knife, file and stone) just before cubuddle started making them. I'm extremely pleased with it.

Thanks guys,
That's exactly the info I was looking for. I will follow up on your advice and sounds like I should have my kit ready to go in short order.
Thanks,
Brent

Does anyone know where I can get a Norton stone for the Bears Hunter Kit.  My kit is missing the stone.  I had one cut that fits but I would like a Norton.  Thanks much for your help.
