Title: Re-finish on Red Stripe Riser
Post by: bswear on March 21, 2012, 11:22:00 AM
My Dymondwood Riser has several places on the grip that the finish is gone.  Each spot is the size of a tiny drop of water.  I am not interested in sending back to Bear and waiting 3 months for them to fix.  Any ideas on if I can fix myself with a wipe on poly or something else?  Thanks in advance!

Brent

oh yeah Brent you may want to use a little fine steel wool and try rubbing out the spots with the steel wool first. Then use a little Brichwood & Casey tru oil gun stock finish as touch up ??? bd

Thanks Doc!  I may send to you to slim the grip at some point but not until the new bubinga shows up.  I have been waiting since November.  I know some of you guys don't like the new ones(grips) but I can't find an old one for less than $1000 and don't really like the brown stripes.

I've not shoot the black & red as yet Brent. How do they shoot compaired to the black and tan models from the late 90's and beyond ? and did bear change forms or any thing like that ? or is it the same form as the 1990's models and beyond ? bd

I have had it just over a year.  I think it is shaped different than the brown stripe but have not had them both right next to each other.  I do know the finish is very thin!  It has not received rough treatment and has never been anywhere except hanging on the wall or in my hand to go shoot in the yard.

oh yeah the more things change the more they stay the same ahh ? last week looked at a gold latch in as new as new can get condition never shot never even taken outside never ever strung as far as I knew.....but it has moisture spots in the finish on the side of the riser that I guess you would say is in the bottom of the box ? it must have gotten moisture in or around the box while spending some years locked in a gun safe in Gainsville. What is the total cost to restore a gold latch ? well that would depend on if you'd want a restorer type guy to sand that gold stuff off those latches or not ? and man oh man brother if you neck that 22K gold plate ? you gotta get the camo paint out and hope for the best bd

I reshaped the grip on my new TD, steel wool and spar urethane and you can't tell where I touched it. Looks like new, but different.

My understanding is that Dymondwood wood doesn't even need a finish.

Ron, probably right ...doesn't NEED a finish, but if your gonna put one on it should be done right, and that's what bothers me also. If I'm making a dymondwood riser for my self and decide not to put a finish and there may be a chance of moisture in the glue lines...that's my decision.Dymondwood will still contract . but a company should have the ways and means to put a professional finish on any bow.
