Here is one of mine that I have images on this machine anyway.

I have all the original documentation on this one including the original bill of sale and a hand signed letter from Paul indicating why he was going to be the one building this bow.

I think this is the most quiet bow I have ever shot too. It is just like new..............

62" 65 @ 28"

I have wondered why the risers on the takedowns are shaped slightly different?
Was that an earlier style?

I might be wrong, but Tim's takedown looks identical to what Dave W. is turning out these days, but that one peice seems different?

Anyone know if Paul fine tuned his design as he went along?  It would only make sense that his workmanship and style evolved.  Just wondering.

don't get me wrong: those are all beautiful!!

All of Paul's bows were a little wider in the riser section.

Dave has even slimmed his bows down in the riser area. My most recent riser that I just got back from Dave last week is thinner and more sculpted yet.

Daves bows are slimmer than  the Original in the photo if that helps.

It is just amazing on how well they all shoot.........................

Tim, I agree, they are works of art, but made to be used.
I only wish Paul was around to share his thoughts with us.

My original is in pieces. The riser broke back in 96 and the limbs went in 2002:-( Still have the limbs. Was a very sweet bow but I think Dave makes a better bow now. That old bow accounted for my first gator and a very nice Florida 8pt as well as many other deer in the few years it was whole. I now have 3 Windauer Tips in my stable

They are all special. This one just has that little something extra.

And I always walk away shaking my head when I shoot it. It is very fast.

Great pics guys, I love the originals.  Dave makes some beautiful bows but theres something about dropping the string on something Paul built.

My one piece still has the elevated rest. It was put on by the previous (original) owner and he used titebond or some other heavy duty glue and I'm wary of removing it with anything that could mess up the finish.  It shoots nice off the flipper just fine, so it can stay on for a little while longer.

After seeing these other originals I'm gonna have to start gathering up my spare change for another one.

I've got one of Paul's Takedowns.  It's 75# @29" and I used it for many years.  I went to one of Dave's bows about 4 years ago.  I also bought a set of limbs from Dave that were glued up by Paul and finished by Dave.  I don't have any pictures of Paul's bow, but can get some one of these days.  I still shoot Pauls bow on occasion, and it's killed a lot of animals.  I think I had Paul make my bow about 21 years ago.  Dave said that it's a different setup.  It's a 64" bow that was made with a long riser, and a set of limbs that were normally for a 62"bow.

Nice try Pete.I was afraid to ask but Im glad you did.Your story on Paul and Jay was moving and it really made me wish they were still with us.Seems to me Paul was one in a trillion and Ive only learned of him in the last year or so.And Tim since your probably the man to ask are they priced comparably to new ones or are they like a Babe Ruth bat?

I don't have a Schaefer (by Paul or David) but I once had that same surf shirt.    :)

In those other pics he's wearing a Hang Ten shirt.  A Montana surfer?

Also, wouldn't his elbow be considered too high by most people these days?  Just wondering, from what I heard he had no problem with accuracy but it seems to break some of the "rules" of good form.

It really depends on the bow............

I like the heavy ones and am always willing to step up and pay for any heavy Tip unless it is just a messed up bow. I think the best analogy would be it's worth what someone is willing to pay.

Some of the bows Sergio has posted are worth quite a bit. I for one would really step up on one of those in the cash dept. They are very nice bows. And the fact they are over 65lbs really gets my attention.

Tim

I would also like to add since this thread really pertains to Silvertips on not only what awesome people Dave and Beth are to deal with.

The fact that it is my opinion that Dave is currently making the finest bow money can buy. His level of talent and improvement in Pauls original design is nothing less than amazing.

That is "MY Opinion".

I just recieved a new 60" 82lb @ 28 TD Silvertip. I can shoot a 685 grain arrow out of that bow that is 31 1/2" Grizzystik Alaskan. Roughly 8.35 Grains per pound.

I am awaiting arrival of a Chronograph as we speak. I will reserve my thoughts on what I think this bow is doing in the feet per second dept until I Chrono it myself.

I anticipate some results that will maybe raise some eyebrows.

Daves bows are tremendous bottomline.

Thought I would just share that is all...............

Paul built this bow for me in the summer of 1991.  It is a 62" Silvertip, 65# @ 28".

Limbs are marked: # 1893

Is that the number of the bow?  You would think he would have marked the riser if it was the bow number.

I've been asked several times what my bow is worth, but have no idea.  Not that I would sell mine, but what are they worth now?  Mine is a 64" takedown and it's 75# @29". The number on the limbs is 770.  Does anyone have a guess?

Mike; don't really recall what type of glove he used, but i think it was a deerskin damascus type glove. You would think that with the draw weight he used that he would have prefered a type with the inserts in the finger stalls. His strength was incredible. One time when I stayed at his plce for a couple of Days , he had his barbell loaded with weights on the floor of the upstairs level of his home. The barbell ( loaded ) was blocking the door way to the bedroom and i proceeded to try and roll it out of the way , Paul watched me struggle for a few seconds then came over picked it up and moved it!! I was much younger and stronger then, and was using a 70# Silvertip !!???
Another time we were in his shop retillering my bows for 3 fingers under, after respraying the sanded areas and we were standing about just chatting Bowhunting, he found that his telephone cable was broken, so he stripped the outside sheathing off with his thumbnail, while he was talking away.Just classic schafe! I can still hear his chuckle.

Here is a picture that Beth took the time to send to me along with a very nice explanation of the bows and the timeframe involved.

They go left to right...........

1) This red bow is a 56" Savage Deathmaster made by Bob Savage for Paul in Aug of 1974. He made it prior to his BC hunt that year and went on hunting with this 67# bow for a couple more years to come. I believe he took a moose, sheep and goat with this bow and other animals in that time frame. Paul at this time was learning from Bob and I believe helping out in his shop. This bow had glass running the whole length of the target side.
2)This green bow was built by Paul most likely in that same time frame. Had history on this bow and have misplaced it. A friend of Paul gave this to us so I will get with him and get that information again. I do know that it is 56" like the red one but does not have glass down the front. The riser is built out of phenolic.
3) The is a   very early 60", 87# Silvertip most likely made from Paul's shop on his farm. It has a maple riser and again no glass down the front.
4) This is another early Silvetip built by Paul probably in 76' or 77'. As you can see it has a flared contour so to speak in the upper part of the riser. If you look ahead you see he eventually got rid of that contour. This bow is slightly longer than a 60" but not quite a 62". It has a shedua riser and a very narrow thumb rest overlay.
5) This bow #431 was built in 1982 sometime and made out of bubinga. Most of Paul's one-pieces you see of that era were built out of bubinga with black glass.
6) This bow #1119 was built in the beginning of 1986 and you can see he has switched to using laminated wood  in the riser and was offering clear glass in the limbs in addition to the black glass.
7) This is a current 60" Silvertip made by Dave.
8) This is #9 TD recurve which would have been probably built in 80 or earlier. Our records go back only to the #400 and on so can't confirm that for sure. Here again he was using laminated wood. Rarely did Paul build his take-downs with exotics.

Sergio once told me that the Deathmaster was just a copy of the Shakespeare Neceda. I disagreed, as mine was quite different. Now, I look at bow #2, Sergio's old bow, and I can see his point. It does strongly resemble the  Neceda.

Here are 2 I picked up at a garage sale. Once I got the camo paint off and the fabric limb covers removed I think they look
pretty nice.

I had one for a while...an original made by Paul that I purchased off Craigslist.  Bow was a 62" recurve with two sets of limbs - both camo.  One set was the original set that was purchased with the bow and the second set was from a duplicate "backup" bow that the original owner had purchased, but he had since lost the second riser.

I tried and tried to adjust to the bow, but the grip just did not fit me and I couldn't become consistent with it.  I eventually sold it to another tradgang member with both sets of limbs.

Based on the info I received from Beth (bless her heart for putting up with all of my questions), Paul probably made anywhere from 80-100 bows per year. So based on this, I'm guessing he put up about 2500 bows...Just a rough estimate.I believe one of the last serial numbers from Paul was around 2024.

I have and hunt exclusively with a Paul Shafer original. 62" 63# at my 27 1/2 draw length. Fell in love with this bow the first time I ever hit full draw with it. I have never shot any smoother of a bow, it likes heavy arrows and hits with authority. Dead in the hand and I would put it up against any other in terms of quietness! Paul Shafer was way ahead of his time! Dave makes a beautiful bow but I personally like Paul's form much more. I have big hands and the grip just fits. Sure wish he was still around, but I can't imagine how he could ever make improvements on my bow, of course I am sure he would have tried! Rest in peace brother. Gary.

I agree with Tim and Sergio. I like Dave's newest risers the best.

I was in Montana a few years ago with my son and we stopped by the shop. Dave and Beth welcomed us into their home and we hung out for a while.  Great people!

Here are my Silvertips, the picture with the single bow was built by Paul:
