This is cool. It's great to see the past come alive with these gorgeous works of art. Very nice group photo Nick.

I got this bow in 2002 I think. The finish was flaking off and there were no stress lines in limbs. There had been a compound type quiver mounted using wood screws on the riser. I removed all the finish, and filled the screw holes. I reshaped the hole below the coin so now it looks almost like a dark spot rather than a filled spot. The other hole is very hard to find at the edge of the coin. However I did not do a great job of filling the pores. I also had to use the funky decals, as I did not know about Al's decals at the time. This also has the original side plate and my homemade feather rest.
I used this bow in 2003 to take my first elk. It was a very nice 6 point. I also used a Bear tape-on quiver, 1960 Razorheads, and silver 2018 shafts. If you look close at the middle and top right pictures you can see that this block of wood was cut lengthwise to make two pieces, and glued back together so the grain matched. It doesn't have the typical "I" beam construction.
If you notice it is a 60" 60#.
I really like shooting this bow but as age has progressed my ability to shoot more than 6 arrows has diminished. I would really like to find a LH 50-55# someday and do a trade.

Very nice Kodiak Ron!post a couple of pics of it with that elk,if you want.

Congrats Ron! :clapper: :clapper:
-
Ron;
You'll be sorry if you ever let that 60lb go. You'll see that picture of the elk and wish you'd never sold it.
Dave
-
That is truth Dave.
But it's still here.......
I thought Felix would be all over it, but it's about 15 lbs too light for him
-
It is only January and the value of the 62 Kodiak is already climbing, I can see them up with the 59's in value before the 50th birthday hunt starts this fall.
-
Ron,I get one 55#.I really want to use it for this coming hunting season.Years are passing for me too!

Philip,whn I found this one I thought: philip's weight!
-
I'm really looking for another 62 (ALWAYS!) in a good hunting weight.
This one is in great shape. I take it along to the shoots for 3-D. Sorry for the lousy photo - can't seem to get rid of the glare.
-
These pics are awesome! Nick that K Mag is absolutely gorgeous....I can't believe it's 50 now. How does it shoot?
-
Love that Woolrich plaid....I live about 45 minutes from the old plant, and used to have the whole outfit. Warm but really heavy.

They are great bows Tony.
What is your ideal draw weight in a 62 Kodiak?
.........Philip
-
Here's mine a week ago, doing what they all want to do. Sorry about the strike plate. It's what works for me. I suppose I should at least cut it to make it look better. This one is skinned with diamondback on the back of the bow.

Colin, Great looking zebra in that window. '62 Grizzlys are one of my favorites!

Philip
50 - 55# is right in my sweet spot, with 52 to 54# being my ideal! Everything I have is between 49 - 59#............EXCEPT for three 62 Kodiaks in the low 40s ( :knothead:
Someone posted about "what is your dream bow?". Mine would probably be getting my old 62 K back.......in the same condition I sold it in 1982!
I own nothing but vintage Bears and a handful of Dale Dyes anymore. I shoot most of them quite well......but NONE have that "feel" or bring back my best hunting memories like the 62 K. The wood TD grip might fit my hand the best of the old Bears.....the Dyes fit like gloves.....but none of them make me smile like when I'm shooting the 62!
:campfire:
-
stay tuned.........Philip
-
I'll play along. Here's a 62 Grizzly hanging out.
And a 62 Kodiak Special
(http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p2/bretto723/100_0099.jpg)
And a 62 K-Mag I sold I don't have very good pics. of it but it had some beautiful wood.
I also have a 62 Cub but don't have any pics. of it yet. It's 52@28 and in good shape minus one stress line on the belly.
Great pics. everyone. I hope to kill some rabbits or squirrels before season closes with the Grizzly. It shoots very well for 50 yrs. old.

-
Tony,
My favorite weight has always been 55#.
I draw 29" and all my bows fall into the 57-58# range which is where I like to be.
For now that is......
As I age, I would suspect I will drop down in draw weight.
The first bow in the picture is 52# if you notice.

I just got my 62 Grizzly off the truck today! It didn't have it's leather grip so I'm working on one, but looks mint in every other way. No stress lines and some sweet grained sight window zebra wood.
This bow came with what looks to be the original blue, green color rug that the catalog shows in 62, a six line strike plate and scary old string.
I'm going to trim on the new leather grip a little more tommarrow, add some color to the leather and glue it down on Sunday, I hope.
So I hope to have some good pic's soon, she's 45#.
Man I'm Excited I got this bow!!!

WOW!!! you guys have some great bows!
-
RLA, CONGRATS. I think you'll find that to be an exceptional shooter.
There is this guy here on TG that left this bow at my house. I told him to come get it a week ago. How long do I have to wait until it's legally mine? I'd tell you who it is, but then you'd all know he's crazy for leaving this '62 just hanging around my place.

Nice! there twins 45# with nice window wood.
-
I didn't want to post a buddy's bow but when I saw your window I had to put it up right after. They are very similar. Very nice looking bows, and they shoot better than they look!
-
I was wondering where I left that old thing.
I'm glad you posted the pic Colin. When I saw Ryan's, I thought "Man, that looks like mine!"
Ryan, show us pics after the new grip is on.
-
I've already scrapped my first attempt, with out a pattern I didn't get the shape close. Might have it now on my forth try, yes I think it's gonna work this time.

I'll share one

Trap, WOW. Nice!

Trap - I've always admired your 62 K. Sweet wood!
-
That's gorgeous Trap!
Thanks for sharing that with us.......Philip
-
TRAP, let me be the first to take you up on your offer to share. I will PM you my address!!!
:goldtooth: :biglaugh:
Beautiful bow!
-
Best of show right there DD! BEAUTIFUL!
-
Thanks guys, glad there are folks around that appreciate the classics as much as I do. The good lord made the wood. Fred made something beautiful out of it. I'm just the fortunate temporary caretaker of it.
-
Yep, that's some really good stuff right there!
-
I'm back with the leather grip on the '62 I didn't have a pattern (bow came off the bay without a leather grip) so it took me 4 tries to cut out the leather and be happy with the shape of it. This was my fist time putting a leather grip on a bow, so it's not perfect by any means, but I'm happy with it.
I first have to thank the Bowdoc, Don Ward for the time and effort he put in to the refinishing 101 thread, I pretty much followed the putting on a new leather grip info from start to completion.

I got this bow just a few days ago, finished the grip this AM and did some shooting. I love this bow!!! Well, this is where it gets good.
Today was the last day of our MO deer season. I wanted to get some woodsie pic's of the new bow with it's new grip, so I just took it (didn't think I'd see any deer anyway right?)
At about 5:15 this evening I made one of my best on game, shots ever with the new to me grizzly, WOW!!!
Did I already say this is my new favorite bow :bigsmyl:
I was shooting a blue 500gr. 1970 cedar tipped with a 2 blade razorhead.

Keep them '62 pic's comin

Nice job and nice bow!!
It'd be my new favorite after that as well!

That is just awesome!!! Thought you might like the way it shoots!
Congrats! Nice grip and excellent shot
-
 Oh YEA! That's Good Stuff!!
-
That is OUTSTANDING Ryan!!!
That grip looks perfect, especially with a little red on it.
-
I think the grip looks awesome! Kudos.
Did you make the strikeplate also? If so nice work on that also!
-
Way to celebrate a anniversary! Great looking job on the grip too.
-
Looks like the first 50th birthday kill..the grip looks as good as the sight window..what a great sense of accomplishment .
-
Thanks guys! I got a jump on the 50th Birthday hunts & didn't even plan on it. Just figured I'd get some nice pic's. Sometimes you just get lucky!
-
I agree with the rest of the gang...great job on one of the best shooters from Bear.
-
This Thread gets better all the time! Lots of gorgeous bows. Hard to beat Trap's though. That is a real eye catcher.....
-
Here's my Griz 45#, Kodiak 55#, Kodiak Special 48# & Griz 45#/with black leather, got to love it. .... ;) Hink

Love the 55# Kodiak!. :readit:
Thanks for sharing those bows........Philip
-
Nice pigskin, not that common on those Grizzlys!
-
Happened to be digging through some old magazines in the garage and came across this 3 section, 6 page fold out copy of a December 1962 article from Outdoor Life. Not sure where this came from? Not as nice to look at as the bows but felt it was appropriate here. Very Nice bows Hink!! Really nice bows Hink!!! I'd love to find a 62 Kodiak, but I think I'd rather have another 62 Grizz in a 50-55#er to go with my 45#
OldSkoolArcher, no I haven't tried to make a strike plate yet, this bow still had an original.
Ryan

A few more for the 62 thread! Surprisingly the very inexpensive Cub is a nice shooting bow. -
WOW,the Brazilian Rosewood in the 62 Kodiak is really stunning.
-
Nice article Larry M. Adds a nice touch, I think.
I'll take some pics of my 62 KS tonight and post them tomorrow.
-
Here's another 62 Bear from the rack:
My wife's 62 Polar. 56" 28# @ 24" Some folks call this a "Lady Polar", I guess based on its 56" length.
I seem to recall that the 62 Polar was the first all zebrawood bow for Bear.....then again, I could be having a senior moment!

Thats Saaaaweeeeeeeeeeeeet Tony!

Tony & Larry....nice! "Wood Is Good" ;) Hink

Nice Lefty...bet she is a smooth shooter
-
Since we are talking '62' here, can someone tell me, On the coin.. was it painted black or is the black oxidation?
-
Boy there are a couple drop dead gorgeous chunks of Brazilian on here.. Trap that sap wood really makes it work. Wow.
-
It was NOT painted black. They just turned that way.
-
With regard to the pewter coins. The biggest question I have had is whether they came Black from the factory. The answer is Yes. At least the 1961 Bear Video "The Oldest Game" clearly shows the coins on Fred and Chucks bows to be black. What made them black? I don't know.
But some of the Bear coins have the Bear letters, and line around the edge not black, acting as highlights. If it was a finish reaction why is the only black part the background on these coins ( and yes the finish is intact and original)? Why aren't the letters and lines black also? It has always appeared to me that the coin was painted and then rubbed to allow the letters and other lines to stand out.
I believe that Bear intended the coins to be Black, because he was aware it was black. If they didn't want them to be black, why would they continue to produce them in that fashion. I don't know how they became black, but I believe it was Bear's intent for them to be black.
Here is another interesting point, the 1961 Grizzlies that I have seen have the Black Pewter coin. They have factory camo. I am assuming that in the case of a camo bow the coins are installed last. Other camo bows support this. My 1965 Factory camo Kodiak has no finish on the coin. I believe this is a huge blow to the oxidation discussion since the coin is black and no finish was ever applied! As a side note it is obvious that finish or whatever was on the coins did not stick to the coins very well.
For those that are sure the coins were not painted, how do you know? If Bill Stewart or Fred Bear says they weren't painted I would trust there words. But, for something that happened 50 years ago it is difficult to be certain of something either way with out first hand knowledge. I am certain that they came from the factory black, whatever the cause.
-
1962 coins that I have had seem to have black paint that will flake off if it is cracked and brittle
-
Yep, Painted.
-
What bow? I don't see nothing!
:dunno:
-
This is a 1961 Grizzly I used to own. No finish would have been applied to this coin, as I believe the coin would have been installed after the camo paint in the case of a factory camo bow. The coin is black with the ring around the edge and various highlight of pewter showing through. I would like to add that in condition like this the coin is very attractive.
-
Nice stuff....I should look for 62' Grizzly, just so neat!!
-
some amazing bows on here WOW
-
It would be relatively easy to paint the coin and polish the raised areas leaving the low areas in relief.. This most likely would have been done before installing the coin..
I don't know but I favor the paint theory, Hard for me to believe it would oxidize as much as that.
The catalog does not show the coin,, any one have a picture of a new one early in its' life?
-
Earl - I don't have a picture, but it can be seen in the video "The Oldest Game" if you have those old Bear movies.
-
Here's a 1962 Grizzly I just acquired.

Age old question...or at least 50 years old. I purchased (traded for) my first 62K in the summer of 1964. I do not recall the degree of "blackening" and finding an old photo would be an adventure in itself. I do recall that the bow had a darkened coin. I never gave it any thought in my youth as to whether or not it was oxidation or paint or a reaction to the applied finish. It was what it was!
When I bought this 62K years back, there was no chipping of the coin "finish". Over the last year or so, I guess because it has been getting shot more and more at the 3-D shoots, the coin "finish" has started to flake off, showing the plain pewter surface. IF it was NOT painted, I doubt that we could call it oxidation.....pewter is slow to oxidize. I think it would be more accurately termed a "reaction" to the finish that was used.
I brought this one along as a backup bow on a MD sika hunt last month and Jack Guard took some detailed photos of it on a sunny day.
-
Hayslope- good point about oxidation. I know little about pewters reaction, and I never liked chemistry, but I have tried to find some information on the net.
The oxidation is a result of the lead in pewter. This causes a darkening. This is a typical pewter finish. Oxidants can be chemicals or simply oxygen. Can pewter oxidize beneath finish, cut off from air? I don't know, but I am thinking not.
Perhaps the finish was supposed to look like oxidized pewter?
I believe this picture is proof that the black is not from oxidation. It is a 61 Grizzly. NO finish over coin. Look at the rim of the coin? Is it black? NO. Is there black on the coin? YES. Is it from Oxidation? NO.
My guess is that they painted the coin black before installation and then sanded/polished/scraped the coin to leave some of it in relief. Another, TradGanger proposed something similar above.

Senior moment for sure..........not long after I posted this, I was racking my brain because I seemed to recall an even earlier "all zebrawood" Bear bow. :knothead:
I now believe the 1961 Kodiak Special was the first (or at least the first one that I remember)! Anyone else vote for the 61 KS as the first?

Some nice bows you guys have there.
I just picked up my first 62 Grizzly tonight . If I could post pics I would.it is 48# love the grip and wow what a shooter.this bow is clean and has the pig skin grip on it .
-
Norm
You have a sweet rack full of 62s! I especially love the 62K with the sapwood. Quite the looker.
-
Just picked up the 62 with the sapwood on Sunday.
Doing fine Kenny how have you been?
-
Doin good Norm.
I need to post up a couple pics of my '62 Grizzly I got from Colin.
Bob, send me your pics. [email protected]
-
Thanks Kenny.I sent you some pics
-
Norm
Your "new" 62 is the polar opposite of one that was just on the big auction site. It had the sapwood on the back side of the bow.
Sad to say that bow had a few extraneous holes in the upper limb and the finish had seen better days.
Yours is pretty nice.
-
WOW Norm!

Here are some very nice photos of hunterbobs '62 Grizzly.

Stunning sight window Kenny.
-
Kenny - that one is a keeper for sure! Neatest ZW sight window yet!
-
Thanks for posting the pics Kenny . That is an awesome looking 62 you have there.
-
I have always thought they were painted and then sanded to put the background in relief.. Possibly oxidize under the paint causing it to flake.
Since I could not raise Doc, I am refinishing one right now and the coin appears to be aluminumn..
-

Mike Shaw (member here on TG) has a 62 pewter coin on the big auction site. He also shows a photo of the back of the coin. You can see where some finish worked it's way down to a back edge......the coin appears black in that spot. This is the first pewter coin that I've seen that wasn't attached to a bow. This seems to add credence to the idea that the pewter coins turned black from a reaction to the finish.
-
I have one in the basement that is not attached to a bow too (but will be again soon)
It is very light in weight almost feels like aluminum..
So should I paint it before I put it back it , or leave it bright.
It came out of this bow, http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=14;t=000287;p=1
and can be seen in the pictures.
-
Pretty amazing that anyone would paint over that bow!!! Of course, I've seen lots of old bows that received some kind of "alteration" to suit the owner.
I would leave the coin alone if you are putting it back on the bow. I think you might be a little disappointed with the look if you paint it.

Love the Rosewood on that K-Mag.
The arrows ain't half bad either.

Hayslope and Earl -
If you look back at some of my previous posts and others, you may be swayed to the painted theory. The **** coin mentioned illustrates oxidation, but it is white/grey - not black (the back side darkness on the coin does not match the black on the face and is likely the burnt hot glue that was used to attach these coins, whish are usually heated when removed). Do some research on oxidation and pewter (putting pewter under finish PREVENTS oxidation, as there is no oxygen).
Also if you look at 62 coins that are still intact (no finish flake) you will see a similar and almost same pattern of black finish to bare pewter. I don't think this would happen if oxidation was the case.
The 61 camo kodiaks have NO FINISH on the coins, but there is clearly a Bright edge and black background.
Also, when these bows were new, the coins were black. Look at the Bear video "The Oldest Game" - black coins.
EARL - My oppinion is that you should paint the coin to match the one in this picture, as it is how it was intended to look from the factory. Paint the coin and remove it from the high spots.

With our spring MO turkey season just six weeks away, it's time to get the '62's white limbs dressed up and ready to hunt.
Plus I just got one of Traps feather rests and wanted to show it off! They are a Sweet rest to shoot off of, great arrow flight!

that glass looks even darker green on that grizzly. Is that an early 1962 / late 1961? That's cool.

That riser looks to be all one piece, Nick.
Unusual?
Very nice!

I thought I would share a couple of "before" photos of this 62 Kodiak before it travels south for a makeover. One piece riser. 56# Most of the finish was removed.
I can't wait to see what it will look like cleaned up and with a fresh finish! Gotta love brazilian rosewood!!!!!

Nice collection of 62's you have there Jack! After meeting up with you and seeing your collection, I've been bitten by the Bear bug too!

Jason,
There are worse things than being bitten by the Bear bug....... I just can't think of any right now.
-
Not a masochist or anything like that....but.....I always thought that "bite" felt pretty good! :campfire:
