Title: Pop-up ground blind?
Post by: The Gopher on December 12, 2007, 08:35:00 PM
Do any of you hunt from a pop-up ground blind? i have contemplated purchasing one but it seems to me that using trad gear in one might be a bit cumbersome. Also for any of you instinctive shooters, do they interfere with shooting? Just wanted to get some of your thoughts on pop up blinds. thanks, Dan.

I have the double bull T 5, and have had no trouble shooting my 64 in. longbow from it.  I do cant my bow.  And I just purchased the T 2, but have not tried it out with my bow, I like them so much I think I'm going to check into the 54" bow at Bobby Lee.

But I will tell you this, I started hunting out of tree stands about six weeks ago, and I really like.

Dan, Just get a Double Bull recurve with light weight rod and be done with it. There are cheaper blinds, but you will end up with the DB.

I have a stackhouse blind by Ameristep. Its tall enough I can sit in a chair and shoot my 70 inch longbow. Not much wiggle room though. I sit in a 3 legged chair.
I have seen others just sitting on the ground; which might give more ability to move; but I guess I am too old to not use a chair.
If I could afford the double bull recurve model; I would check them out.
Are you guys sitting on the ground; or in chairs?

I'm sitting in a chair, I bought the "big chair" from Double Bull. I'm not big but  it sure is comfortable, i have no trouble sitting for hours in my blind. The older i get the more i like it.

I have both the T 5 & T 2, I really like them, I have not yet hunted with longbow out of the T 2, how is anticipating getting a 54 " Bob Lee, but I have to test out my Turkey Creek Longbow first. But with the T 5 there's no problem, like others have said he need to use the screen netting, how one window and in the other window, then tuck it behind the rods, the one leave the netting a little loose, for the fluctuation of the arrow, you don't want it is tight as you can get it. And make sure that if you couldn't see 50 yd. you need to branch it in if you can see 100 yd., set out in the open, the chair that Goebel has called the magnum is really comfortable, its 30% bigger and has a padded bar on the back that can be moved up and down for back support,(I have fallen asleep in the chair) I have the first one also. With that chair you can swivel either way right or left, and you can go down on 1 knee easy enough.

The black holes that are created by your T 5 without see camouflage netting, look like predator holes in the forest, when the deer see that they think of coyote or wolf dens, so they split right away, they will not tolerate the black holes. I also take a bottle of capital or a corn scent spray, and spray it about 3 in. away from the edge of the blind, for a scent cover. I pushed the debris inside the brind over the flap that's folded in, that's another way to mask your scent. I like the T 5 because of the zipper top in the roof, I velcro it open about a half-inch in early season, watch how you place it so it doesn't shed light on you. I also were a black mask was just my showing, I wear black clothes on both my hands, and a black stretch T-shirt. Black on black is good. Make sure you said to the back of the blind when you use the four windows on one side. You don't want to silhouette yourself. With traditional bow you can shoot out of the viewing windows.

I have really enjoyed my double bulls. I have light rods and both of them, my T 5 is 13 lbs. and my T 2 is 11 lbs. the main thing is to break up your lines, the roof line is really important to branch in. When you set in the ground in front of you, pop-up one side, it doesn't matter which one, with the rest of the hubs set them right over left, set them in the palm of your hand, and was the other hand, pull the blind, and pushed the hubs out, stand up and pop up the rest of the hubs with your polm. The first time I took my now, and I watch the video number times, I could not get to pop-up, try at a number times at home. Another good thing is if you can spray it down with a UV protector. I use Scent Eracer it's made by home in field.

And like they say they're great for Turkey, and you don't have to use camouflage screening. I just bought a Mr. Buddy heater for mine.  I plan to give my try coyote hunting this winter.

Now they just make one for tree stand

where do you get the lightweight rods?  And how much lighter do they make a matrix?  Thanks...Mike

I like the Northwoods Kwick Blind  http://www.shrewbows.com/nothwoods_blinds.htm

Made in Michigan's U.P. right here in the USA.

The BowII is plenty tall enough to shoot your bow and it sets up and takes down in seconds. The Nat Gear Camo blends into the environment really well and when it snows on the blind the surface lets the snow cling to make it part of the landscape. Shoot through screens are also available.

The older I get, the more I like hunting out of my portable blind. You can be comfortable in all kinds of weather.   :archer:

Ron, I see you don't have Your blind brushed in.. I know Your showing off how the snow sits on the blind. Do you brush in Your blind when hunting greener woods?

If you want to have the light rods put into your matrix all you do is call the company,866-614-5547 and you can ask for Tom, tell him Carl sent you.  They are great people to work with, it will lighten up your blind by 4.5 Lb.  I'm glad I did on mine. It also makes it easier to set up, not that they're very hard at all anyway, now it mine is broken and it's a matter of 10 seconds and it's set up.  Of course you have to brush it in.

That cost for the light rods for the matrix I think is $68.  Give them a call it's a toll-free number, and they'll give you the info on how to get them.  The company is about 15 mi. from me.  So I was able to take it there and have been doing.  I think what they do is have you ship it to them and then they ship it back to you.  I think it was well worth it, most of the time I'm tracking in at least a mile and a half.  And you might think that 4.5 lbs. is not much but it is when you're carrying it that far.

So just give Tom a call, and he will set you up with that.  And you can also order one of those comfortable chairs, it's called the magnum, and boy is it ever comfortable, it has a padded bar on it that you can move up and down for your back support.  I call it my " La-Z-Boy in the woods".  Last time I used it I fell asleep in it.

Last year I had to a half inches of snow in the top of my T 5, it also blends right in, the double bull, it is made up of canvas and polly, and it has a 92% larger camel pattern, it's called predator camo.

Are you guys brushing in blinds due to bad experiences or because it's been recommended?

This was my first fall hunting with a pop up and I had deer as close as 3 yards with many shot opportunities from fawns to mature does and bucks, and not one of the several deer I had in range gave my non-brushed in blind more than a moment's glance.

Sometimes I do brush it it a little and sometimes it doesn't need it. In those popple slashings it looks like a big mushroom and the deer ignore it.    :saywhat:

If you are going to buy a DB you better do it soon.  They are changing a lot.

in what way, Bill?

I believe primos just bought out DB and they will be making significant changes to the some of the blinds (all for the better I've heard). Would be nice if they make them signifincantly lighter, less bulky to pack, and more reasonably priced as to be honest, I'm really not at all impressed with the current models and wouldn't buy one for half the going price after using a friends.

primos did buy the bd. i heard they wont use the deception pattern either...which i feel is the best out there for a larger blind. will have to wait and see what the come out with
