I was taking pictures of a 62 Kodiak for a friend today and was thinking 1962 has to be my favorite year for Bears. I thought I would gather all I have for a group photo shoot.

Nice family photo Jack.Looks like you hang with an elite group.I have been shooting my '62 Kodiak exclusively this year myself.I want to get as comfortable with one bow as possible if I get a chance to go out hunting. Can't think of a finer bow to get comfortablw with than a '62 Kodiak.Unfortunately it's an only child.
-
John,
Sometimes one child is best!

Love them!Unfortunatly I have only a Kodiak.
-
I have a soft spot for those 62 Kodiaks myself. The only bow I owned from 1964 to 1982 was a 62 Kodiak. Have a few now, but only one of them is in really good shape, but it certainly shoots great and brings a smile to my face every time I have it in my hand.

Very nice Jack!
Those are some fine bows!
-
I was watching my Uncle practice in the yard in 62', he is what got me started in 67'. Great collection Jack!
-
In 1962 I was ten years old and shooting a hand-me-down bow of some type but I can't remember the make now. A Bear bow was only in my dreams at that time and it would be many more years before I actually owned one.
-
My wife was a newborn and I was still on the inbound train. Love the family lineup Jack!
-
Born Feb. of "62" Poor world ain't been the same.
Only bow I have from that year is a Bear Cub.
-
I was 13 and shooting a 1959 Bear Kodiak
-
In 1962, I was still just a glint of light in my Daddy's eyes!!!!!!!!!!
-
Beautiful line up Jack!!
I was 12 years old and just moved from Arizona to California. Absolutely hated it at the time but learned to adjust. (http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll292/toxo-collector/archery359.jpg)

In 1962, I was starting to gather up all of those outdated bows... like 1959 & 1960 Kodiaks....

Jack, like you I was ten for most of that year turning eleven in December.
I have a 62 Kodiak Special that I got from some crazy Bear collector somewhere who went out of his way to find me one because he knew I wanted one. That is one very fine gentleman.
Right now it is with an outfitter friend, who did not have a recurve, on the condition that I will be able to use it to hunt with in 2012, its fiftieth year. After that it will be his, since I kinda traded it to him for an elk hunt.

Wade, I tried to pm you but apparently your message box is full.
Please check out my thread "1972 Bear Takedown" and see if that bow may be familiar to you. It certainly is a nice piece of Bear history.

Jack, I was a freshman in high school unaware of Fred Bear and the bows he was making. The only thing on my mind was girls and cars. That was then. Now, I have been hunting exclusively with Bear K-mags and Kodiaks for last 40 years, have a small collection of some really nice bows and am living a dream on Higgins Lake.
Give me a call if you come this way, I would enjoy talking with you and sharing my bows with someone else who would appreciate them as much as I do. Best Regards, Dave

Senior in high school, I now own 2 of them, the one is 55# and in need of some TLC from the Good Doctor if he ever surfaces again.. The 45# is probably a 9 at 45#

I was 8 running a trap linr with my little brother, shooting na fiberglass bow and loving life.
-
Working in the Bear Archery Shop of Muskegon (owned by my dad) selling these bows.
-
Great pictures and stories guys!
Jon,
I worked at Sporting goods store that sold Bear Archery products a little later on in the sixties. Around 67-68 I believe. A new Kodiak Magnum was $64.95 at the time. A lot of money to a 15 year old kid that made $1.25 an hour. My first new bow was a AMF Red Wing Hunter that was about half that price.
-
Was also 13 at that time, couldn't afford a Bear but was shooting/hunting with a Ben Pearson Cougar that cost me $19.95-money I'd saved up from my paper route.
-
Should have my first '62 Kodiak this week.
-
Oh, to have prices like 1962. If they only made a time machine.
Wade, Your collection never ceases to amaze!! I was brand new in 1962 as were the two Cubs I have. I should be receiving a 1962 Grizzly and a 1962 Kodiak Special by next week. Hmmmm.... Seems like there is a pattern here somewhere....
-
Was a freshman in high school. Had not discovered archery until 1965. Hunted with a Savage M99 (still have it).
-
Wasnt even a thought yet.
Nice bows .
-
Living in California, shooting a Bear Kodiak and Howard Hill Longbow, hunting, working, traveling, partying too much and thinking life is great.
-
What lengths were the 1962 Kodiaks offered in?
-
GreenGrizz,
Only 60" in 1962.
-
Had a 5 DM bow that my Grandmother bought me.
Was on the way to school and had know idea what they are talking in the radio about the bay of pigs.
Early in the morning, same season as know , falling leaves gave a premonition of coming winter.
(deutsche mark, @ this time 1$ - 4,20DM)
-
I was 11 and carrying a solid fiberglas Golden Fox (45#) by Bear on my trapline. Only bow I could afford at the time. Killed my first deer with that bow in '65. Have a '62 Grizzly and '62 Polar now and simply love the grips on them. Wish I could have afforded them then.

We were living in California, my Dad was in the Navy. We were watching Danial Boone and waiting on my Dad to get back from deployments in the south pacific. He did go on gun hunts in Utah about that time and we learned that mulies don't have white tails. Archery was just starting for us as I remember getting a wooden bow that my Dad broke when he was checking it out. He fixed it with wire and some electrical tape but it never made the next family move. Archery had started in us. Coming Christmas's brought additional gear. :)
-
I was 6yr old at the time and making and shooting self bows. I didn't know they were self bows, I just took a branch and bent it and put a string on it. My Dad got tired of putting new strings on my bows so he used some really thin aircraft cable for a string, problem solved. Got a Ben Pearson fiberglass bow for my 8th birthday, have never looked back.
-
I wasn't born yet and I don't think my dad was either. Nice bows fellas!
-
You guys are showing your age
Classics all. I am not looking forward to using my 68 Super Kodiak in 2018 when we BOTH turn 50 :(
