I think that is a cool looking bow but I don't know anything about them. Who would be so kind to clue me in? Please.

-
Now Is see some on the classifieds that are type 1 and type 2 grizly's and a Kodiak. what are the possible dogleg options?
-
Kodiak
Grizzly Type I and II
Kodiak Magnum Type I, II and III
Cub
I will post some pictures this evening. Great Looking Bows and the Kodiak is a Great Shooter.
-
Kodiak Magnum I and II prone to riser breaking- that is why there are three versions
-
1963 Kodiak. SWEEEETTT shooter. Not prone to breaking (only the magnums were).
-
I think they look cool. 4Runr is fixing the tips on a Type II Grizzly for me. I should have this bow in a week or so and let you know my thoughts on how it shoots. I have often read very positive feedback on their shooting characteristics - just like Migra Bill's for the Kodiak.
They do have a a pretty large grip though. It's a totally different grip from the 1962 Grizzly I have and the 1964.
-
I shot my 63 Kodiak once when I acquired it and then retired it to the collection, I must say that this dogleg model shoots like a dream!
Fast, stable, sexy and points very well and no need to mention like ALL vintage-bears it has SOUL!!!!!
60" and 55#.......philip

OOOOOOMMMMFFFF!
I Sure do thank you all for the feedback and to oldschool for them great pics. Now i must find me one. I have a 30" draw so what are my best options? I see some of oldschools are 62" so that is a plus. I really like the lines of that Grizz type I. Now I have to go back to the classifieds and look again.
-
I can't comment on the 30" draw part, but I will add that the Kodiak will shoot circles around the Grizzlys. At least in my experiences.
-
What length did they make the Kodiaks in? I do kinda like the looks of that centerfold model. Who has a picture of a dogleg cub? That would be cool to see.
Is the Grizzly type one or type two prone to breaking?
-
The Kodiaks were only 60".
Neither Grizzly were prone to failure.
Be right back with Dogleg Cub Pics.
-
Ask and you shall receive.

THANK YOU NICK!!!
Maple Riser and Cream/Yellow glass on mine. The glass colors are somewhat random though. I have seen a few different variations.
Yes, the leather on the grip and strikeplate is factory and original pigskin.
-
The Cub does look cool....
Nick, if them Grizzlies are as bad as you say you might as well just give them to me. I'd be willing to sacrifice myself so you are not hindred with such inferior shooting bows :) :)
Hey, you know I have to try. :)
-
Colin,
HAHA. I will try to endure and suffer through having them on the rack. If it gets too bad, I will be sure to look you up!
:D
-
Either that or you could send me a Kodiak and try to convince me of your opinion.
:p
I do have to admit the dogleg Kodiak's look fabulous. I may have to pick one up one day.
-
You are already hooked on Grizzlys and I wouldn't want to take the chance of infecting you with the Kodiak Epidemic!!!
-
" I wouldn't want to take the chance of infecting you with the Kodiak Epidemic!!! "
I am betting it is too late.
I can't wait to shoot the one Whip is gonna give me! :goldtooth:
-
actualy the only problem with any of the 1963's mags was that a 250 pound man would step thru the short mag to use the step thru stringing and bam they broke the bow by twisting it to far with their butt cheek in the sight window pushing the bow sideways.I'am sure some of them did break do to failure in workmenship and or materials.
About 80% of the broken bows were broken at the arrow rest arrow shelf joint. It was during the stringing up or unstringing when they broke.I have a customer that owns a 1963 mag type 1 that he's killed countless critters with since he bought the bow new in 1963.I've taken several deer with my 63 Kodiak and it shoots as good as any bow on the market today. The 1963's are all great shooting bows hope this helps you decide on which model you want bd
-
Chuck,
I may have an extra 63' Type II Griz laying around. Sold my extra 63' Kodiak a few weeks ago so can't help you there.
-
Wow. Now that all the pics are posted I have to share mine. Of all my classic Kodiaks, my 64 is the quietest, my 59 is the prettiest, and this 63 shoots the best.

All this talk about the 63 Dogleg, I think I'll take mine to Denton Hill.
-
Here is my one and only Dogleg. A type 1 Mag. The last time I posted this, Wade came on with a bunch of them. Nice looking bows. I would like to find a nice Kodiak Dogleg someday. I hear they are very nice shooting bows!!! Ok, I am out for the weekend(WI PBS gathering).

I've got a Kodiak 45#, that is the smoothest and quietest bow I have. And, I'm thinking about parting with it. I hate seeing them hanging on the wall and not flinging arrows.
-
More of the same opinions; I think the '63 was the most under-appreciated Kodiak from the 60s and the '58 the same from the 50s. I have two 55# dogleg Kodiaks(well, the factory camo one is marked 54#), and they give up nothing at all to any '64 or '62 I've ever shot. Gotta say, the dogleg riser didn't win me over - I mean, it's like Bear's "Edsel" shoved in between the elegant '59-62 risers and the '64 K. (an old family friend of ours actually designed the Edsel so we have a special connection to a unique, different design that found a special group of admirers after having been disrespected for decades!) But, as you all have indicated, the dogleg Kodiak was falsely accused and will win over nearly any archer who gives one a chance!! There isn't a Bear bow on my wall that will outshoot my doglegs. Like you, Mullet, I'm wrestling with letting one go, and it's just darned hard to do!
-
I have three listed in the classifieds, type 1 and 2 Grizzlies, and a very nice Kodiak, the Kodiak is my favorite shooter (with absolutely gorgeous wood in the riser!)
-
My Kodiak is about to be in the Classifieds also. I shipped too many bows this past weekend that I need to pay for. I did end up with a Black Mountain Sheepeater that was made for Doug Campbell, out of all the trading, that will smoke an arrow.
-
This is a Type II Grizzly. 4runr fixed the tips for me. Just got it back. This bow must have some history. It has the factory stamped star on it, and had a tip that was badly splintered.
Kenny fixed that and I tell you this bow really shoots! I have heard the dog legs were great shooting bows. I am now a believer!

The shape of the 63s is maybe not the most appealing, but the Bubinga is always fantastic and they are reconised like great shooters.I own a Kodiak type 3 and a KMagnum type 3.Nice bows.
-
I'm going nuts right now not being able to go hunting for another day!
So I went back and read some old topics.
Found this one again about the dogleg Kodiaks. We don't hear enough about these "forgotten treasures". The 63 Kodiak does'nt get enough respect IMHO. It's a wicked bow and will shoot with the best of them.
Seeing all those great photos of them persuaded me to show mine. My arm did'nt need to be twisted for that. :D
The 63' Kodiak is a serious nail driver and I would not hesitate to hunt ANY game with it......Philip

Just realized if you reshaped the riser some it would look just like a super kodiak. Maybe fred knew this was a good design but needed some years to perfect the "looks" category for the public with the SK? Interesting conspiracy theory... :biglaugh:

That bow is SAAAAAWEEEEEET! Love the wood and 55#.....NICE.........Philip

I like Doglegs, especially those recalled Magnums that were made into Lamps...
Floyd Eccleston, of Archery Hall of Fame notoriety, created them, this is Floyd's personal lamp that was in his shop for over 40 years, it now resides at the Arsenal.

Very Cool Wade, Thanks for the picture.
The Arsenal looks better each time we get a glimps. Thank You.

Looks awesome Wade!!
-
Hey OlSkoolArcher,
That is a really nice Dogleg collection, thanks for posting pictures for us to enjoy. I have never had a chance to see the different types before. I have a Kodiak and the Type III K-mag. Awesome, Dave
-
Dave, Your quite welcome. I have a few more (4 more actually)that I have since added to my collection since that picture was taken. I should take a new picture. I have sold alot of my bows over the past few months but the doglegs will be staying on the rack!

So can anyone tell me why there is a type II Grizzly
Type II and III on the KM's is self explanatory, but if they Type I Griz. didn't have a problem,, Why the type II???
-
Does the handle make the bow a dog leg and if so is a Kodiak hunter considered a dog leg?
