Just sent a few pics of a Comet at your request. I surly look forward to learning the Past of Mr Whiffen.
Ser # C1071 53"@28 58" lgth.
The quivers just a kwikee kwiver Acme Mich. I use this quiver because it has lot of good mojo to it. Also harvested my first big game animal with this bow.
I bought this bow from our buddy Ph.d Archer bowman in 2003. The quiver was bowdocs Dads, and cedar arrows from Suzanne St Charles.

products and life Mr Whiffen has done in archery.

I did just buy a Whiffen Fletching jig and really like it, its about as simple a jig as you can get.
Where and when did Mr Whiffen make his bows.

Whiffen Comet and almost all Larry Sr aka Whiffen bows were built by none other then the late great Earl Hoyt bd

Yes, many of the Whiffen recurve bows were made by Earl Hoyt. On the other hand, I have seen a Comet and a model called a Meteor that I suspect were made by Howatt. I am taxing my memory cells, but I think that Larry Jr. told me once that his father made the longbows, but contracted out the recurves (if my memory cells have failed, again, then maybe someone can set us straight on this one).

Are the bows Howatt vs Hoyt easy to tell apart?

The Comet that you posted at the top looks like the one that I have seen that I think was made by Howatt. The riser shape is a little different than that of the HiSpeed, with the riser kind of pointed at the back of the shelf & grip area (the 2nd photo above depicts that pointiness).
The Comets made by Earl Hoyt look very much like the Hoyt PH & 3PH ProHunters. I have one of those Comets at home and will try to take and post a photo or two this evening, if possible (we have have company at my place until Thursday, so my "social/host" responsibilities may trump my archery interests).

Here are some photos of my Hoyt-made Whiffen Comet. Notice the Hoyt ProHunter characteristics:
1. The shape of the riser
2. The overlay on the belly of the grip for the heel of the palm
3. The length, serial number, and draw weight written in gold ink below the grip on the belly of the bottom limb
4. The Earl Hoyt limb tip overlay.

I dont have a Whiffen bow but here is a couple of Whiffen items to look at.The tall one is the Quiffer arrow quiver & the other is a Whifreel for bow fishing in the origional box.I have a couple of his books floating around here somewhere.
