I recently experienced an issue regarding extra charges, specifically who would need to cover the PayPal fee, with a well known seller on the big auction. I am constantly amazed by how businesses, in a totally depressed market, can attempt to almost extort us for an extra few pennies.
And btw, I am getting to the point of starting an "anyone but PayPal" movement as well for the ways they are finding to hose us.

While not a big fan of paying the extra Paypal fee
I can say as a buyer there are some advantages. A few months ago I bought a bow and used Paypal for payment. I never received the bow and the seller would not return my phone messages or Emails as to the reason why. When I finally left a message and said I had no alternative but to ask Paypal for a refund I got an Email back from the seller stating he had been busy and would ship the right away. That was the last I heard from him. I waited a while longer and after still not receiving the bow filed a claim with Paypal. It took a month or so but I got a full refund through Paypal.

I haven't run into that on "the big auction site" but I did through a private transaction when a seller asked me to use the "other" or "gift" option on PayPal so he received the full amount. (I wouldn't use "gift" as that implies no obligation to respond with product on their part). If it came up after a winning bid on the auction site and had not been in the original wording I would maintain that the seller had indicated they accept PayPal and that as the vendor means they accept the fee - UNLESS it was clear in the written auction terms they expected the buyer to cover the fees. That's misleading. I would claim they entered secondary negotiations and back out on the principle of it (unless I thought I had gotten a great deal).

You make a good point, Jack. I have had the same thing happen with a surger that I thought I had bought for my wife.
Nice thing about this site is that we know how to agree or disagree in a friendly and respectful way.
And we are pretty good at not letting emotion get in the way of reason.

sending a check or ? is OK in some cases but its a very slow process sometimes waiting on someone to mail check or MO.I like PP better its faster and when I'am selling I'am needing the dough asap.20 years ago selling used bows over the phone took weeks to close a deal sometimes bd

On ****, I will hide my expected paypal cost to the shipping. The know upfront the charge for shipping, so there should be no complaint.
When I bid I figure in the cost of shipping to determine my bid. If a bow worth $150 has $100 shipping, I will only bid $50-60. Sometimes you win sometimes you don't
On the archery site, depending on the item or my asking price or my need to sell, I will sometimes ask for 3% to cover paypal.

Credit cards charge fees too. I treat Paypal like a bank account. No fees; they pay me interest, I know it is just pennies; but it sure makes up for not paying fees.
Just leave the money in there, don't tie it to a credit card and leave the cash in the account for next time.

I love the way that any thread requiring some thought brings out the big boys to play.
Truth is I was just having a bit of a pms day when I posted this and of course you guys are right.
I wanna take this opportunity to thank Jack Shanks for looking after someone who he has never met in person. Jack bought a 62 KS to sell to me based solely on the possibility that I might want one. Can you imagine anyone other than a tradganger doing something like that?

More serious extra charges are levied when you sell with a reserve, or a 'best offer' there you get nicked for 8-10% on top of everything else. And that appears magically on your month end statement. :scared: :scared:

wanna avoid that? deal via money order!
yep, less convenient, takes a bunch longer to fully end a deal, but aside from the postal service delivering yer mo yer in control, answer to no one, pay no other fees and don't spread yer financial info into cyber space.
it's all about choices and conveniences, and we're such a fast food society ...

I tried to set up a sellers account on the auction site today. I have no idea what its going to cost me if I sell a bow on that site. If anyone has the time to explain the "fees" to me in a pm it would be appreciated. In the famous words of John Wayne " life is hard, but its harder if your stupid" :banghead:

Rob, that is what I was doing and then Canada Post just started to two bit us to death as well. They both charge a substantial fee for the MO and take a pretty good cut on the monetary exchange rate.
