Title: New addition at Raptor cant identify
Post by: Ted Fry on March 17, 2011, 05:39:00 PM
Boy this one has me stumped, anyone know anything about Lane custom bows?
The bow is 62" long and pulls 56#@28" and says on the bow Lane Custom Bow on the bottom limb.
On the top limb it says Custom built for Bill Hunt.
The bow looks 60s era with white glass on the belly and brown on the back. This is a wild design no doubt. (http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x295/photos4work/lanebow.jpg)

Not real sure I want to shoot it Chuck , feel free to come on out and string it up, just go outside before you pull it back.
Looks to me that the elbow in the fadeout would have tons of stress on it!

Don't you have a brother-in-law?

"Hey Jimbo, while you're here I have a new bow I'd like your opinion on . . . "

I'm no bowsmith, but it does appear to go against normal practice.

Let us know how it shoots.  You may have rediscovered a lost breakthrough!

I would not shoot that bow. If it was 10 pounds less I would think about it. At 56 pounds I would be afraid of turning a rare collectable into kindling. It is up to you, but you better get your safety glasses out when you string it.

I wouldn't be scared to shoot it at all particularly since the area in question is reinforced and the limbs have such recurve through the whole limb it should bend very evenly. Jim

Sorry , not going to shoot it, probably will be fine but I have plenty of other bows to shoot.
If you could see the close up of the grain at the fade outs you would agree, pretty scary and I dont like wearing bows.
Just wanted to find out what I could as this one is one I havent heard of and neither had Fred Anderson , Gail Martin, Larry Hatfield and several others.
Just thought it was worth the longshot that someone may know a hint that will lead us on.
Most likely a part time bowyer from the 60s but since it hangs here in the store I would love to know a bit of the history, I purchased it just because of the novelty of it.

First off Ted. Sweet bow my friend... I have only seen one other of them at an archery shoot many years ago when I was about 15.. It was at the Grayling MI tradbow shoot... It looked just like yours but was around 45 pounds.. The guy who had it (It wasn't for sale ) Told me it was made by a small time  bowyer.. The old man who had the bow said it was made around the 1960's as a target bow... I think I have a photo of the bow that was at the tradbow shoot in Grayling.. Thats about all I can tell you..Sorry I don't have anymore info.. I sure would not shoot it.. Yes it could be shot I'm sure but why ??.. Your doing the right thing Ted..

P.S Ted I'll give you a call sometime tomorrow afternoon...

Ted, do you have a larger version of your photo? The one that you have in your first post is hard for me to see well on my monitor (okay, yes I could use a new monitor).

Im with you on the small monitor NumPls, I use a magnifying glass to enlarge small photos, maybe I need to invest in some of those reading things you wear.
Killy , I think you just want to see how I look with a bow wrapped around me, huh?
Bowdoc , did you forget how to use the phone?

Yep , your bedroom is set up and ready to go , lots of bows to dust off as well come on out Tom.
You really need to come out during hunting season however.
