Title: Loctite Storage
Post by: Whip on January 17, 2011, 08:35:00 AM
I've been using the Loctite 420 and just noticed the fine print on the bottle says to store in the refrigerator.  I'm never good at reading the fine print!  :knothead:

Is it still good?  Still seems to hold stuff together, but wondering if it might have lost something.

Also, what is the storage life of this stuff after it has been opened?  (given that I follow instructions from now on and keep it in the fridge!)

Call lock-tite Joe. I think it just helps it stay thinner longer. I had some that I just kept in my shop and it went from water to gel. I took a good while for it to change. I don't think it hurt the properties of the glue. But call the tech support and they will let you know.

I have had mine in the fridge for over 5 years and it is still as good as the day I bought it.

Joe 420 will last much longer in the fridge then at room temp.Room temp it will turn to gel as mentioned in somewhere around 2-6 months pending on your room temp.I've never had a bottle longer then around 60 days myself.
I believe at room temp it causes the hardner to evaporate much faster hench takes the glue much longer dry time but it will still dry and be hard as ever bd

I've had some in the fridge for a year and a half, and it is still like water.

CA's are moisture-cure products.  Storage in Frig accomplishes two things:

-Air is drier inside the refrigerator
-Lower temp slows down the cure process

Loctite's stated shelf life is one year, but I've got samples that are 5+ years that I use around the house (I'm a glue salesman)
