Title: Dick Palmer recurve
Post by: Xavier on November 04, 2010, 09:57:00 PM
Anyone have any info on Dick Palmer recurves?
I picked up a nice 'Brush Bow' #50 - AMO 58" - #9377.
I'm curious how old it is. I'd guess 1980's maybe, by the look... i'll post a pic when i can. Name 'Dick Palmer' is also hand written in white on the bow.
Thanks.

Dick Palmer was a hairdresser and strong as h#ll (his "deer" longbow was 106 lbs and he shot a 180 lb one just 'cause).  He had a deal with Martin to produce his bows (I don't know if fully or if he did the final steps and finishing).  I have a 72" Hunter longbow of his that is a Martin ML-10 but with trapzoidal cross-section on the limbs instead of rectangular.  Has less handshock, or seems to.  I bought mine in 1987.  I don't know about his recurves.

I believe I saw he passed away not too long ago, but his small firm is still in operation.

Thanks! that's very interesting. 106lbs - what the heck! seems like you'd have to pump iron just to pull that back, let alone hold it steady and aim.
He does have a nice 'do'... heh.

Seen him 2 years ago in Fayetteville, Arkanas. Had a small tradional archery business he was running out of his basement. Looked healthy has a horse.

Anyway - i finally shot this bow a couple weeks back, still feeling it today. Definitely too much for me at this stage, drawing 29.5 and i shot it understrung - it seemed shorter than another 58" amo bow i have - so when strung with 54" string (twisted down to 53.5) - it seemed to have very  little braceheight ~ 5.7in (???)
(hard to see - but the first 6in mark is on the grip)

Glad i have others in 45-50 range!

Looks like the Martin Mamba of the same era.

Brace height runs 1/8 of AMO length +/-, so 7-1/4" would be a starting place.  I looked at a Mamba in the 80's they had at Dick's (back when there was only one) and wanted to sell badly and it stacked up before I got to my 30" draw.

ok - thanks,
can't say i'm thrilled about trying this at 7.25 in. brace height... can't imagine shortening the string that much, when it is the 'correct' length. also it would be tough for me to pull comfortably.
