Title: finaly "broke in" my Bob Lee
Post by: adeeden on December 10, 2007, 03:02:00 PM
It's been a long frustrating season for me this year. I passed up quite a few deer in the early season looking for MR. big. Around November 7th (just when it gets good here) I ended up moving into a new home and hunting was put on the back burner while the packing and unpacking was going on. Just in the last few days have I been able to slip away for a few hunts.

This morning I headed to a place in Indiana I used to hunt alot, the spot I had in mind was a long way from the road. We have had a spell of crazy weather lately snow, freezing rain and rain so I took my time getting to where I wanted to be skirting pactches of old snow and ice. When I got there I stuck a few limbs in the ground for a makeshift blind and settled in on my little tripod stool. It was overcast and seemed like it took forever to break light this morning, but just after I could see good I spotted a group of 3 deer working down the ridge to me. I knocked an arrow and slipped off my stool onto my knee's as the deer were quickly coming my way. The first deer was a button buck and he passed by me at less than 10 yards. The old heart was really thumping today normaly does and yearlings don't get me stirred up but today was different! The second deer (another button buck) walked exactly where the first had, and momma doe was right behind him. I let her walk past me to a slight quartering away 10 yard shot, and drew the obsidian tipped arrow. As soon as I hit anchor the shaft was away flying exactly to the tuft of hair I had picked just behind her shoulder. 40 yards down the trail and it was all over, except for the 4 hour drag back to the road! I am flat out worn out!

Picture was at home I didn't pack my camera today!

And one with the knife catfishon sent me with a note saying "I wanna see some deer blood on this"

Lastly here's the obsidian head, Complete penetration in fact it's back in the quiver ready for work!

This was the first deer I have taken with the my Bob Lee. I'll be out there again tomorrow hopefully the orange muzzleloader crowd will give me the woods to myself again!

Great job!  That would be too cool to take one with a stone point.  One of these days.
May I suggest you purchase a strong plastic sled and a good harness for the drag out?  It works very well.  Leave it somewhere the deer won't notice it while you sit and then it makes the pull back to the vehicle much nicer.  Keeps the auto a lot cleaner, too.  Put a layer of plastic down before loading the sled/deer.  My older GMC Jimmy, the smaller SUV type, has hauled many deer in the back with this set up without the need for a cleaning afterward.

Great Job Dennis. Those last minute and spur of the moment hunt always seem to be the best.

Here's a shot at answering some of your questions!

ChristopherO Yes, I have tried the plastic sled. They work well on flat ground, but if any of you have spent any time in Parke County IN you know there are some huge hills and hollows there! This particular drag was up and down almost the whole way! I have tried the sled on these hills in the past and it seems that when going up I lose alot of ground when I take a breather with the sled!

KIP, My Bob lee seemed loud to me as well I tried the limbsavers early on and they did help a little. The solution to quieting mine were bow hush and hushpuppies They made a huge difference!

herkimerhunter, The obsidian point is one of my own, I'm an amature knapper and still learning I have made quite a few of them though and this is the 4th deer I have took with my own heads. This obsidian is Davis creek which is my personal favorite to work!

hawgslayer, My lee is the signature series 60" basicaly the same as the hunter just a few extras added on! I love it, it has become my go-to bow since it arrived last January.

Mike Bolin, that state line is to close! I have a lifetime license in Indiana and grew up there so it's just to easy to drive over for a few hunts each year! Besides I figure why let them HOOSIERS have all the fun!

All, Thanks for the compliments!
