Title: Can anyone tell the year for this Bear takedown?
Post by: Gil Verwey on September 15, 2010, 12:17:00 PM
I recently picked up a older Bear C riser takedown bow. The serial number is c-1940. It has the Bear on the latches. The limbs have 3-3508 on them. I am guessing early '70s.

Thanks
Gil

Gil- The serial number indicates a Style I riser- maybe a very late 1969 but most likely 1970. The limbs are probably a couple years newer. The serial number of the riser indicates that it is the 940th style I C riser built. There were a number of "lost" serial numbers because many of the A and B risers broke but the C is generally a target bow riser and I don't think as many of them failed due to the lighter weights normally used on target bows. It should be a very good shooter and a pretty piece of work. Howbout pics?  GY

Sure, thanks for the information. My wife wants to start going to shoots with me. She has gone before, but hasn't shot. Now she would like to shoot also. I thought this would be a good one for her.

I tried to get that one, but I am broke so I only put in a minimal bid.

If you want to part with some of the accessories I have 3 Bear Mag C's that could use them  :)

The C-1940 # indicates that it was the 940 th handle made which also includes the A and B handles ,1941 could have been an A or B or C , also there was no "type 2" on a  C as they could be had with many options even in 1969-70,that include the changes made in the 1971 A and B TYPE 2 handles.

Well I got the takedown today. It is nicer than I imagined. Fred Bear could really build a bow in the 50s, 60s amd 70s. I have several of his cases from that time period also and they are unbelieveable.

It is kind of sad though. The person who owned the bow passed away and his family sold it. You can tell by the bow that he really treasured it and took care of it. Everything is quality and in excellent shape. The sights and stabilizer are top notch, high qualirty. The bow and case are in excellent shape. I can only imagine that he was some great target shooter. I will give the bow and equipment the same respect he did.

Sometimes buying bows is fun and other times it is sad, especially as you get older.
